At this point, there are four groups that David has to deal with. 1. His army, who had been loyal to him throughout but felt betrayed by his mourning for Avshalom (he dealt with them in the end of פרק יח). 2. The people of גלעד, the part of מנשה east of the Jordan, who had protected and sustained him throughout the civil war. 3. The people of יהודה who were loyal to Avshalom, who had been anointed king in Chevron. 4. The people of ישראל, the other tribes, who by and large had thrown their lot in with Avshalom. Group 2 we will see later in this perek. We now turn to group 4 (then group 3). {:he} ><b>י</b> ויהי כל העם נדון בכל שבטי ישראל לאמר; המלך הצילנו מכף איבינו והוא מלטנו מכף פלשתים ועתה ברח מן הארץ מעל אבשלום׃ <b>יא</b> ואבשלום אשר משחנו עלינו מת במלחמה; ועתה למה אתם מחרשים להשיב את המלך׃ --שמואל ב פרק יט ישראל in this case is the tribes outside of יהודה. David had united the two halves of the nation 28 years earlier: {:he} ><b>א</b> ויבאו כל שבטי ישראל אל דוד חברונה; ויאמרו לאמר הננו עצמך ובשרך אנחנו׃ <b>ב</b> גם אתמול גם שלשום בהיות שאול מלך עלינו אתה הייתה מוציא (המוציא) והמבי את ישראל; ויאמר ה׳ לך אתה תרעה את עמי את ישראל ואתה תהיה לנגיד על ישראל׃ --שמואל ב פרק ה But Avshalom found the cracks that had been barely plastered over, and fractured the nation again. After the civil war was over, ישראל realized that they were wrong, and wanted to re-unite. We do not have a record of them saying again, ואתה תהיה לנגיד על ישראל, but the text makes it clear that this must have happened, since David now has to go back to the people of יהודה who had been loyal to Avshalom (group 3). {:he} ><b>יב</b> והמלך דוד שלח אל צדוק ואל אביתר הכהנים לאמר דברו אל זקני יהודה לאמר למה תהיו אחרנים להשיב את המלך אל ביתו; ודבר כל ישראל בא אל המלך אל ביתו׃ <b>יג</b> אחי אתם עצמי ובשרי אתם; ולמה תהיו אחרנים להשיב את המלך׃ --שמואל ב פרק יט {:he} ><em>ודבר כל ישראל בא אל המלך</em>: שכבר נודע לו דבר כל ישראל כולם פה אחד שישוב למלכותו. --מלבי״ם, שמואל ב יט:יב But notice David's mistake: he only calls *יהודה*‎ עצמי ובשרי, where ישראל had previously reminded him עצמך ובשרך *אנחנו*. He will only plaster over the cracks again. He then continues to try to unite the nation (and pay Yoav back for his insubordination) by appointing the rebellious general to his staff (עמשא had been Avshalom's chief of staff): {:he} > ולעמשא תמרו הלוא עצמי ובשרי אתה; כה יעשה לי אלקים וכה יוסיף אם לא שר צבא תהיה לפני כל הימים תחת יואב׃ --שמואל ב יט:יד עמשא is the last of the leaders of the rebellion still alive; Avshalom has been killed, Achitophel committed suicide, and Chushai had been working for David all along. {:he} >ואת עמשא שם אבשלם תחת יואב על הצבא; ועמשא בן איש ושמו יתרא הישראלי אשר בא אל אביגל בת נחש אחות צרויה אם יואב׃ --שמואל ב יז:כה And now both ישראל and יהודה are loyal to him: {:he} > ויט את לבב כל איש יהודה כאיש אחד; וישלחו אל המלך שוב אתה וכל עבדיך׃ --שמואל ב פרק יט:טו {:he} ><em>ויט את לבב כל איש יהודה</em>: עמשא הטה את לבב כל איש יהודה. --רד״ק, שם But certainly not to each other (we will see this conflict later in the perek): {:he} >ויען איש ישראל את איש יהודה ויאמר עשר ידות לי במלך וגם בדוד אני ממך ומדוע הֱקִלֹּתַנִי ולא היה דברי ראשון לי להשיב את מלכי; ויקש דבר איש יהודה מדבר איש ישראל׃ --שמואל ב פרק יט:מד And we've got another civil war coming up in the next perek. The nation will hold together through the next king, Shlomo, but, as we know, it all falls apart under his son. ---- I want to look at the conflict between יהודה and ישראל from a theological-literary perspective. The major tribes in the conflict in ספר בראשית split along maternal lines: {:he} | בני לאה | בני רחל | |--------|---------| | יהודה | יוסף | | שמעון | בנימין | | לוי | | | ראובן | | But by the time we get to ספר שופטים and ספר שמואל,‎ יהודה has lost all his allies and is facing the rest of "ישראל" alone: {:he} | יהודה | ישראל | |--------|---------| | יהודה | בנימין | | | יוסף (אפרים ומנשה) | But when the kingdom actually splits in ספר מלכים,‎ בנימין has joined יהודה: {:he} | יהודה | ישראל | |--------|---------| | יהודה | יוסף (אפרים ומנשה) | | בנימין | | Why the shifting allegiances? [Professor Nechama Price](https://www.yutorah.org/lectures/lecture.cfm/762263/mrs-nechama-price/history-repeats-itself-the-shevatim-in-tanach/) has talked about the character of the שבטים are portrayed through תנ״ך, that there are literary roles played by each of the ממלכות. And חז״ל noted a fundamental difference between ממלכת יהודה and ממלכת ישראל: {:he} >אמר רבי אבא בר כהנא דורו של דוד כולם צדיקים היו וע״י שהיה להן דילטורים היו יוצאים במלחמה והיו נופלים…אבל דורו של אחאב עובדי ע״ז היו וע״י שלא היה להן דילטורין היו יורדים למלחמה ונוצחין. --ירושלמי פאה א:א ד,ב In short, ממלכת יהודה represents those who keep the מצוות בין אדם למקום.‎ ממלכת ישראל represents those who keep the מצוות בין אדם לחבירו. It is תמיד, eternal, if they are באגדה אחת ושלום ביניהם. Rav Eisemann reads the Sifrei as saying there are two conditions for מלכות ה׳:‎ כשעושים רצונו של מקום *or* שלום ביניהם. The ideal, of course, is *both*. But each nation could survive. >When, however, they [Israel] do not as they should, then [hope lies only] in maintaining a community *on earth* (על הארץ) that forms one single entity (אגודתו). --Rav Eisemann's translation, [_The Riddle of the Bowing Moon_](https://www.amazon.com/Riddle-Bowing-Moon-Reflections-Hatzadik/dp/B000AV4OOW), p. 58 ה׳ is still מלך תמיד even when we only have אגדה אחת ושלום.‎ יהודה and ישראל were complementary parts of what should have been a single nation. יהודה kept the בית המקדש but their בין אדם לחברו was lacking. ישראל worshiped עבודה זרה but were united and trusted each other. We see this most clearly in עמוס's description of "the last straw" that led to the חורבן of each kingdom: {:he} ><b>ד</b> כה אמר ה׳ על שלשה פשעי יהודה ועל ארבעה לא אשיבנו; על מאסם את תורת ה׳ וחקיו לא שמרו ויתעום כזביהם אשר הלכו אבותם אחריהם׃... > <b>ו</b> כה אמר ה׳ על שלשה פשעי ישראל ועל ארבעה לא אשיבנו; על מכרם בכסף צדיק ואביון בעבור נעלים׃ --עמוס פרק ב יוסף historically represented that love of עם ישראל: {:he} ><b>כב</b> בן פרת יוסף בן פרת עלי עין...<b>כד</b>...מידי אביר יעקב משם רעה אבן ישראל׃ --בראשית פרק מט {:he} >...דִּי בְמֵימְרֵיהּ זַן *אֲבָהָן וּבְנִין* זַרְעָא דְיִשְׂרָאֵל. --תרגום אונקלוס, בראשית מט:כד {:he} ><em>אבן ישראל</em>: לְשׁוֹן נוֹטָרִיקוֹן אָב וּבֵן, אֲבָהָן וּבְנִין--יַעֲקֹב וּבָנָיו. --רש״י, בראשית מט:כד {:he} ><em>רועה אבן ישראל</em>: משפחת ישראל, שכלכל יוסף את אביו ואת אחיו. אבן לשון אב ומשפחה. נו"ן יתירה כמו נו"ן של שגעון ועורון. ומ"ם של ריקם. ותהי הכנם. --רשב״ם, בראשית מט:כד There was another aspect of ישראל that was not expressed as strongly in יהודה: love of ארץ ישראל. {:he} ><em>[ותקרבנה בנות צלפחד בן חפר בן גלעד בן מכיר בן מנשה] למשפחת מנשה בן יוסף</em>. למה נאמר? והלא כבר נאמר בן מנשה, אלא לומר לך, יוסף חבב את הארץ, שנאמר (בראשית נ:) וְהַעֲלִתֶם אֶת עַצְמֹתַי וגו' ובנותיו חבבו את הארץ, שנאמר תְּנָה־לָּנוּ אֲחֻזָּה --רש״י, במדבר כז:א In בני עקיבא terms, יהודה had תורת ישראל while ישראל had עם ישראל and ארץ ישראל. So יהודה, when they settle in ארץ ישראל, loses the loyalty of all the other tribes because יהודה doesn't feel connected to the rest. That started back in ספר בראשית:‎ (בראשית לח:א)‎ וַיְהִי בָּעֵת הַהִוא וַיֵּרֶד יְהוּדָה מֵאֵת אֶחָיו. And it continues in our perek, with David telling Amasa עצמי ובשרי אתה. And בנימין? How do they end up with יהודה? They should have been the glue that holds everything together. They are בני לאה, allied to יוסף, but are also the seat of the בית המקדש. {:he} >לְבִנְיָמִן אָמַר יְדִיד ה׳ יִשְׁכֹּן לָבֶטַח עָלָיו; חֹפֵף עָלָיו כָּל הַיּוֹם וּבֵין כְּתֵפָיו שָׁכֵן׃ --דברים לג:יב And that is my understanding of the נבואה of the split: {:he} ><b>כט</b> ויהי בעת ההיא וירבעם יצא מירושלם; וימצא אתו אחיה השילני הנביא בדרך והוא מתכסה בשלמה חדשה ושניהם לבדם בשדה׃ <b>ל</b> ויתפש אחיה בשלמה החדשה אשר עליו; ויקרעה שנים עשר קרעים׃ <b>לא</b> ויאמר לירבעם קח לך עשרה קרעים; כי כה אמר ה׳ אלקי ישראל הנני קרע את הממלכה מיד שלמה ונתתי לך את *עשרה השבטים*׃ <b>לב</b> *והשבט האחד* יהיה לו למען עבדי דוד ולמען ירושלם העיר אשר בחרתי בה מכל שבטי ישראל׃ --מלכים א פרק יא I would read the למען ירושלם העיר אשר בחרתי בה מכל שבטי ישראל as a statement about the missing tribe: the tribe of ירושלים, the tribe of בנימין, shall remain neutral, belonging to neither kingdom and shared between them, as [Rav Bin Nun described Jerusalem itself](http://www.hatanakh.com/content/%D7%9E%D7%94-%D7%94%D7%A4%D7%9A-%D7%90%D7%AA-%D7%99%D7%A8%D7%95%D7%A9%D7%9C%D7%99%D7%9D-%D7%9C%D7%91%D7%99%D7%A8%D7%94): אַל־שבטית ועַל־שבטית. But ירבעם rejects this, and builds himself a couple of golden calves, and בנימין becomes part of יהודה alone. ---- >On the twentieth of Tammuz, 5664 (July 3,1904), Dr. Theodor Herzl...died...Rav Avraham Yitzhak Kook, the newly installed rabbi of the port city of Jaffa, was asked to participate in a memorial service to honor the departed leader. Rav Kook was placed in a difficult situation, for which there was no totally satisfactory solution... > However one might lionize Herzl, there was no getting away from the fact that his lifestyle was that of an assimilated Jew far from observance of traditional Judaism. It's like the classic Star Trek episode: >A transporter malfunction splits Captain Kirk into two people--one good and one evil, and neither capable of functioning well separately. --[Plot summary of _Star Trek: The Enemy Within_](https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/The_Enemy_Within_(episode)) So David (even while making mistakes) desperately tries to hold them all together. ---- In that spirit, I want to look at two perakim of תהילים that are addressed specifically to יוסף, and seem to be emphasizing יוסף's place in עם ישראל. They both are למנצח psalms, by אסף. {:he} > למנצח אל ששנים; עדות לאסף מזמור׃ --תהילים פ:א {:he} > למנצח על הגתית לאסף׃<br/> --תהילים פא:א We have [previously looked at Asaf](/Politically+Incorrect/), the leader of the שירת הלויים in Jerusalem (not the Mishkan in Givon). He is called a נביא: <blockquote lang=he><p> לבני אסף זכור ויוסף ונתניה ואשראלה בני אסף; על יד אסף הַנִּבָּא על ידי המלך׃</p> <footer class=source>דברי הימים א כה:ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p> <em>הנבא</em>: על אסף יאמר <em>שהיה מתנבא ברה״ק</em> ע״י המלך כי הוא הכינו להיישירו אל הנבואה.</p> <footer class=source>מצודת דוד, שם</footer></blockquote> His תהילים are very pointed, message-oriented. Some seem almost political; תהילים עח is almost anti-יוסף: {:he} ><b>א</b> משכיל לאסף; האזינה עמי תורתי; הטו אזנכם לאמרי פי׃...<br/> <b>סז</b> וימאס באהל יוסף; ובשבט אפרים לא בחר׃<br/> <b>סח</b> ויבחר את שבט יהודה; את הר ציון אשר אהב׃ --תהילים פרק עח But these are aimed at bringing יוסף back into the fold. ---- First, a kabbalistic interlude. The Zohar, naturally, associates the תהילים entitled למנצח with the ספירה called נצח. {:he} >שְׁבִיעָאָה בְּנִצּוּחַ, דְּאִיהוּ נֶצַח יִשְׂרָאֵל, וַעֲלֵיהּ אִתְּמַר (שמואל א טו:כט) וְגַם נֵצַח יִשְׂרָאֵל לֹא יְשַׁקֵּר, וַעֲלֵיהּ אִתְּמַר (תהלים כב:א) לַמְנַצֵּחַ עַל אַיֶּלֶת הַשַּׁחַר, (תהלים יב:א) לַמְנַצֵּחַ עַל הַשְּׁמִינִית, מָאן שְׁמִינִית הוֹד, וְאִיהוּ נֶצַח עֲלֵיהּ. --תקוני הזהר, תיקון יג, כח,ב {:he} >וגם נצח ישראל לא ישקר ולא ינחם; כי לא אדם הוא להנחם׃ --שמואל א טו:כט נצח has the sense of "eternity": {:he} >ה' הנצחי שמתנאי נצחיותו שלא ימצא בו שום שינוי לא בהוה ולא בעתיד. --מלבי״ם, שם And as a ספירה, a manifestation of the divine in the universe, it is connected to חסד: {:he} >חסד וגבורה הן השורשים לספירות נצח והוד, ועל כן נקודת המוצא צריכה להיות בחסד ובגבורה... > הנהגות החסד והדין בראשוניותן, מוכרחות לעבור סוג של ”הפרטה“ וקונקרטיזציה על מנת שהאדם יוכל להשיגן ולהבינן. > הנצח וההוד הן ביטוי ותולדה של החסד והדין. מדובר בתנועה, במגמה, ואולי אף נאמר תוצאה, של הנהגת החסד והדין... > עקרון זה בא לידי ביטוי בשם ד' הניצב בתשתיתן של ספירות אלו: צבאו־ת. > שם זה משותף לשתי הספירות וההבחנה ביניהן נעשית על פי השם הנלווה לשם זה: ד' צבאו־ת או א־לקים צבאו־ת. הצבאות הן כח, אלו הן חיילותיו של קוב"ה ובהם משתמש כביכול הקב"ה כדי להוציא אל הפועל את רצונו... --הרב איתמר אלדר, [_נצח והוד (א): סולם מוצב ארצה וראשו מגיע השמיימה_](https://www.etzion.org.il/he/%D7%A9%D7%99%D7%A2%D7%95%D7%A8-17-%D7%A0%D7%A6%D7%97-%D7%95%D7%94%D7%95%D7%93-%D7%90-%D7%A1%D7%95%D7%9C%D7%9D-%D7%9E%D7%95%D7%A6%D7%91-%D7%90%D7%A8%D7%A6%D7%94-%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%90%D7%A9%D7%95-%D7%9E%D7%92%D7%99%D7%A2-%D7%94%D7%A9%D7%9E%D7%99%D7%99%D7%9E%D7%94) נצח, as I put all this together, is the manifestation of ה׳'s חסד through intermediaries, through *us*. But the ספירות are supposed to be not abstract theological constructs, but inspirations for our own lives. When we do חסד, that is ה׳'s manifestation in נצח but our manifestation of חסד. Human beings manifest נצח by inspiring others to do חסד, by being leaders. Hence the term מנצח, not "victor" but "conductor". It's the [multilevel marketing scheme](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-level_marketing) of מדה development. And the connection to נצח meaning eternity, is that this ספירה represents the ultimate goal of creation. >G-d's primary purpose in creation was that He should be able to reveal Himself to His handiwork, this being the greatest good that He can bestow. Let's see if this all fits into our perakim. ---- Our first perek is called עדות, a testimony. It is reminding יוסף about their history and destiny. We will see in the next perek that the עדות is the testimony that ה׳ acts through history, and specifically in the life of Yosef himself. {:he} >למנצח אל ששנים; עדות לאסף מזמור׃ --תהילים פ:א אל ששנים literally means "to the roses", but at the level of פשט, it's another musical term that we don't understand: {:he} ><em>אל שושנים</em>: על שושנים והוא כלי נגון עשוי בצורות שושנה. --מצודת ציון, שם But the midrash understands it as a reference to Israel as a whole, an allusion to the metaphor in שיר השירים: {:he} >זה שאמר הכתוב (שיר השירים ב:ב) כְּשׁוֹשַׁנָּה בֵּין הַחוֹחִים, כֵּן רַעְיָתִי בֵּין הַבָּנוֹת. --מדרש תהילים,שם The Targum, corresponding to our understanding of למנצח, understands it as a reference to the Sanhedrin, the בית דין הגדול: {:he} >לְשַׁבָּחָא עַל *יָתְבֵי סַנְהֶדְרִין דִי מִתְעַסְקִין בְּסַהֲדוּת אוֹרַיְתָא* עַל יְדוֹי דְאָסָף תּוּשְׁבַּחְתָּא --תרגום תהלים, שם ### Introduction {:he} ><b>ב</b> רעה ישראל האזינה נהג כצאן יוסף;<br/> ישב הכרובים הופיעה׃<br/> <b>ג</b> לפני אפרים ובנימן ומנשה עוררה את גבורתך;<br/> ולכה לישעתה לנו׃ --תהילים פרק פ The first thing to note is that the psalmist is talking specifically about יוסף, and includes אפרים ובנימן ומנשה. It clearly dates (or is written as though it dates) from before the split in the kingdom. Scattered sheep can be brought back; cutting the vine from its roots kills it, and cutting off a branch kills the branch. This is a nation tied to its land: עם ישראל בארץ ישראל. You adopted the בן פורת; You have the responsibility to care for him. ### Stich Three: Parable plus Prayer {:he} ><b>יז</b> שרפה באש כסוחה; מגערת פניך יאבדו׃<br/> <b>יח</b> תהי ידך על איש ימינך; על בן אדם אמצת לך׃<br/> <b>יט</b> ולא נסוג ממך; תחינו ובשמך נקרא׃ --תהילים פרק פ איש ימינך is in this context a reference to בנימין, and בן אדם to יוסף, bringing us back to the beginning of the perek. ### Refrain {:he} > ה׳ אלקים צבאו־ת השיבנו; האר פניך ונושעה׃ --תהילים פ:כ ---- The other פרק תהילים that addresses יוסף is not a prayer, but a rebuke. He reassures us that אענך בסתר רעם. There are many ways of understanding this phrase; Artscroll translates "I answered you with thunder when you hid", with בסתר referring to Israel and רעם referring to ה׳. Ibn Ezra says both refer to ה׳; He answered publicly from His "hiddenness". I would read both as referring to *Israel*; He will answer our "thunderous silence" (another allusion, in my opinion, to the wordless cry of the shofar). And then the apparently unrelated אבחנך על מי מריבה. There is an earlier (chronologically; it is [attributed to Moshe](/Variations+on+a+Theme/)) perek that goes from רינה and מריבה: {:he} ><b>א</b> לכו נרננה לה׳; נריעה לצור ישענו׃<br/> <b>ב</b> נקדמה פניו בתודה; בזמרות נריע לו׃<br/>... <b>ח</b> אל תקשו לבבכם כמריבה; כיום מסה במדבר׃<br/> <b>ט</b> אשר נסוני אבותיכם; בחנוני גם ראו פעלי׃ --תהילים פרק צה But there's a subtle difference. מסה ומריבה was the place of the *first* miracle of water from the rock: {:he} ><b>א</b> ויסעו כל עדת בני ישראל ממדבר סין למסעיהם על פי ה׳; ויחנו ברפידים ואין מים לשתת העם׃... <b>ו</b> הנני עמד לפניך שם על הצור בחרב והכית בצור ויצאו ממנו מים ושתה העם; ויעש כן משה לעיני זקני ישראל׃ <b>ז</b> ויקרא שם המקום מסה ומריבה; על ריב בני ישראל ועל נסתם את ה׳ לאמר היש ה׳ בקרבנו אם אין׃ --שמות פרק יז מי מריבה was the *second* water from the rock incident: {:he} ><b>י</b> ויקהלו משה ואהרן את הקהל אל פני הסלע; ויאמר להם שמעו נא המרים המן הסלע הזה נוציא לכם מים׃ <b>יא</b> וירם משה את ידו ויך את הסלע במטהו פעמים; ויצאו מים רבים ותשת העדה ובעירם׃ > <b>יב</b> ויאמר ה׳ אל משה ואל אהרן יען לא האמנתם בי להקדישני לעיני בני ישראל לכן לא תביאו את הקהל הזה אל הארץ אשר נתתי להם׃ <b>יג</b> המה מי מריבה אשר רבו בני ישראל את ה׳; ויקדש בם׃ --במדבר פרק כ So when our pasuk says, אבחנך על מי מריבה, *who* was ה׳ testing at מי מריבה? It wasn't בני ישראל; their complaints were legitimate: {:he} >ומריבה זו מצדיקה הכתוב באומרו אשר רבו פירוש שטענו טענה נגד ה' וצדקו בטענת מריבתם. --אור החיים, במדבר כ:יג *Moshe* was the one tested, to see if he could be the leader (the מנצח) that the people needed at that moment, and he failed that test. We discussed this at length in <//פרשת חקת־בלק תש״פ>. Our pasuk is in fact a reassurance to the פרנסים of בני ישראל. "Even though I continuously test (אבחנך in the עתיד) you, the leaders of the people, and I know that you will sometimes fail as Moshe did, I will still support you. {:he} ><em>אבחנך על מי מריבה סלה</em>: ואע"פ שגלוי ובחון לפני שאתם עתידים להמרותי במי מריבה, כך שנויה במכילתא. --רש״י, תהילים פא:ח Then comes part two of the עדות: our responsibility. {:he} ><b>ט</b> שמע עמי ואעידה בך; ישראל אם תשמע לי׃<br/> <b>י</b> לא יהיה בך אל זר; ולא תשתחוה לאל נכר׃<br/> <b>יא</b> אנכי ה׳ אלקיך המעלך מארץ מצרים;<br/> הרחב פיך ואמלאהו׃ --תהילים פרק פא This sounds like a review of the first two דברות: {:he} ><b>ב</b> אנכי ה׳ אלקיך אשר הוצאתיך מארץ מצרים מבית עבדים׃ <b>ג</b> לא יהיה לך אלהים אחרים על פני׃ --שמות פרק כ But our perek doesn't seem to have anything to do with עבודה זרה; the only hint of anything wrong was Moshe's getting angry with the people. The gemara says that's exactly what לא יהיה בך אל זר refers to: {:he} > וכהאי גוונא [לקרע בגדיו בחמה] מי שרי? והתניא: רבי שמעון בן אלעזר אומר משום חילפא בר אגרא שאמר משום רבי יוחנן בן נורי: המקרע בגדיו בחמתו, והמשבר כליו בחמתו, והמפזר מעותיו בחמתו, יהא בעיניך כעובד עבודה זרה. שכך אומנותו של יצר הרע: היום אומר לו עשה כך, ולמחר אומר לו עשה כך, עד שאומר לו עבוד עבודה זרה והולך ועובד. אמר רבי אבין: מאי קראה? ”לא יהיה בך אל זר ולא תשתחוה לאל נכר“, איזהו אל זר שיש בגופו של אדם? הוי אומר, זה יצר הרע. --שבת קה,ב But if we allow our passions to control us, ה׳ will allow that to happen: {:he} ><b>יב</b> ולא שמע עמי לקולי; וישראל לא אבה לי׃<br/> <b>יג</b> ואשלחהו בשרירות לבם; ילכו במועצותיהם׃ --תהילים פרק פא And then we have the image of ה׳ talking to Himself: {:he} ><b>יד</b> לו עמי שמע לי; ישראל בדרכי יהלכו׃<br/> <b>טו</b> כמעט אויביהם אכניע; ועל צריהם אשיב ידי׃<br/> <b>טז</b> משנאי ה׳ יכחשו לו; ויהי עתם לעולם׃ --תהילים פרק פא The idea is that we should בדרכי יהלכו: {:he} > (דברים כח:ט) <em>והלכת בדרכיו</em>: כך לימדו בפירוש מצוה זו: מה הוא נקרא חנון, אף אתה היה חנון; מה הוא נקרא רחום, אף אתה היה רחום. --משנה תורה, הלכות דעות א:יא Again, the emphasis is not on מצוות בין אדם למקום but on בין אדם לחבירו and מידות. And the perek ends with a promise: just as ה׳ supported us in the past, so will He continue to do so: {:he} >ויאכילהו מחלב חטה; ומצור דבש אשביעך׃ --תהילים פא:יז The יום הדין holds no fears for us.
