Kavanot:

Thoughts on Tanach and the Davening

In this week’s parsha, Lavan demonstrates

I want to look at that expression: פניתי הבית. It’s a little weird; why הבית, which implies I cleaned out the whole house, and why say it when Rivka already told him:

עבד אברהם asked about a place to stay; Rivka answered that they have guest quarters. Now, in my house, the guest room ends up being the random storage room, so Lavan’s comment of אנכי פניתי הבית might make sense, but still.

But more than that, בוא ברוך ה׳ is a very odd thing to say. Lavan is a pagan polytheist, why bless עבד אברהם in the very specific שם היוה? Even מלכי צדק doesn’t use that name:

So Rashi says פניתי הבית has a specific meaning:

Imagine the scene: Lavan may not have ever met Avraham, but the families have been in touch (we saw the family WhatsApp post in the end of last week’s parsha), so he knew about Crazy Uncle Abe and his monotheism and iconoclasm. And now he finds out that Uncle Abe is rich! It’s like having Thanksgiving and your purple-haired vegan cousin is coming; you’ll make some vegetarian dishes and feel proud of yourself. But you find out she’s coming with her cybercurrency billionaire boyfriend. You don’t know really what cybercurrency is, but you do understand “billionaire”. So you then make a vegan feast, and throw all the hamburgers out of the fridge.

That’s Lavan. As of right now, Lavan and his family are all about ה׳.

They don’t mean it, of course.

But that’s OK.

Hypocrisy is the homage vice pays to virtue.

Francois de La Rochefoucauld

The very fact that they have a guest room means that have a concept of הכנסת אורחים; there is a place for גמילות חסדים, which is the meaning of the שם היוה, the idea that the creator of the Universe can care about His creations. The very idea that a god could have חסד was revolutionary. עבד אברהם says that the ה׳ of אברהם had חסד ואמת.

That was Avraham’s mission, and ours: is to bring ה׳ from מדת הדין to מדת הרחמים, to bring the שם ה׳ of שם הויה into the the world:

And that’s what Avraham did:

And the message he is spreading isn’t really about G-d. It’s about people. Our task in the world is to go in דרך ה׳.

Avraham preaches Ethical Monotheism, which is not simply that there is one G-d, it is that mononotheism creates an obligation to care about each other. Missing that is a failure in our monotheism.

There is a well-known story about the Alter Rebbe, founder of Chabad. Immersed in Torah Study, his son failed to hear a baby crying in the next room. His father rebuked him: “If you are studying Torah and cannot hear a child’s cry, something is missing in your Torah”.

Tanya White, When Avraham Asked G-d to Wait

Emmanuel Levinas says that ethics, our relationships with others, has to precede theology, our relationship with G-d.

He called ethics, ”first philosophy“. Before we form ideas about G-d or the world, we encounter another person whose face makes a claim on us. We do not reach G-d then turn to people. We reach G-d through them.

Tanya White, When Avraham Asked G-d to Wait

And that message has to spread throughout the world.

From the Nile to the Euphrates isn’t a geographic boundary, it’s a toponym: from one end of civilization to the other. Your influence, Ethical Monotheism, will reach all the world.

In Brit Bein HaB’tarim, “ha’Aretz” is defined as the land between the Nile and Euphrates. These rivers are not borders; never in the history of mankind have these rivers marked the borders of a single country. Rather, these rivers mark the two centers of ancient civilization —Mesopotamia (“N’har Prat”) and Egypt (“N’har Mitzrayim”).

…We are to become a nation “declaring G-d’s Name” at the crossroads of the two great centers of civilization.

Rabbi Menachem Leibtag, The Biblical Borders of the Land of Israel

Rambam famously says that the “Abrahamic religions”, even if wrong, are at least spreading the word:

I will insist the Hebrews have [contributed] more to civilize men than any other nation. If I was an atheist and believed in blind eternal fate, I should still believe that fate had ordained the Jews to be the most essential instrument for civilizing the nations… They are the most glorious nation that ever inhabited this Earth. The Romans and their empire were but a bubble in comparison to the Jews. They have given religion to three-quarters of the globe and have influenced the affairs of mankind more and more happily than any other nation, ancient or modern.

John Adams, letter to F. A. Van der Kemp, 1808, Pennsylvania Historical Society, cited in Judaism and Monotheism: Meaning, Origins, & Implications

So when Lavan says, אנכי פניתי הבית he is reflecting a more subtle influence of Crazy Uncle Abe than he realizes.
