The next section of ספר משלי changes the metaphor. The previous section was a parent lecturing their child, שמע בני מוסר אביך; ואל תטש תורת אמך. This section portrays חכמה standing in the street, haranguing passersby. {:he .lines} ><b>כ</b> חכמות בחוץ תרנה; ברחבות תתן קולה׃ <b>כא</b> בראש המיות תקרא; בפתחי שערים בעיר אמריה תאמר׃ --משלי פרק א And wisdom hear is called חׇכְמוֹת, in the plural. The Alshich says that this refers to the מוסר אביך ותורת אמך of the previous section; there are two sides of wisdom. We called חכמה in משלי, “phronesis”, the practical wisdom to distinguish right from wrong. And there are two ways to learn that, the Divine תורה שבכתב and the human aspect of תורה שבעל פה. {:he} ><em>מוסר אביך ותורת אמך</em>: תורה שבכתב ועל פה... > <em>חכמות</em>: שהם תורה שבכתב ושבע"פ יומם ולילה לא ישבותו להרים קול ולדבר ולומר ”עד מתי פתים...תשובו וכו'“. ויצא בלשון יחיד לומר כי ב' התורות א' הנה ומתאחדות להישיר האדם. --אלשיך, משלי א:כ And the four places where wisdom is declaiming represent levels of understanding רצון ה׳. They are the naïve who accept everything at face value: {:he} >פתי יאמין לכל דבר; וערום יבין לאשרו׃ --משלי יד:טו And part of the introduction to the ספר was the goal of teaching the פתי some sophistication: {:he} >לתת לפתאים ערמה; לנער דעת ומזמה׃ --משלי א:ד We noted that that פתי isn't a bad thing; we all need some simple faith. But if they embrace naïveté, then they will never learn חכמה. The opposite of the פתי is the לץ, the cynic, who believes nothing. That isn't all bad either. חכמה is saying, don't be wedded to either extreme. The מסילת ישרים talks about the destructiveness of ליצנות, cynicism: {:he} > בליצנות אחד ובשחוק קטן יפיל האדם מעליו ריבוי גדול מן ההתעוררות וההתפעלות מה שהלב מתעורר ומתפעל בעצמו מדי ראותו או שומעו ענינים שיעירוהו אל החשבון והפשפוש במעשים. > בכח הליצנות יפיל הכל לארץ ולא יעשה בו רושם כלל. ולא מפני חולשת הענינים ולא מפני חסרון הבנת הלב, אלא מפני כח הלצון ההורס כל עניני המוסר והיראה. --מסילת ישרים ה Rabbi Frand offers a משל (I would read this only as a משל; I don't know if Honda actually destroyed the emu industry): >Recently [writes Rabbi Frand in 1997] entrepreneurs in Texas have begun raising emus in the hope they would replace beef in the American diet...Emu meat is low in cholesterol, high in protein...This was such a promising industry that a pair of breeding emus sold for $45,000. > ...Honda Motors was producing a commercial to promote its Accord automobile. In the commercial...a young man was faced with many career choices...But when it came to choosing an automobile, there really were no choices other than the Honda Accord. > To catch the attention of the public, the commercial mockingly portrayed one loser profession after another...[including] emu farming. Imagine, some people think emu meat will replace beef. Only hicks from Texas, the commercial implied, could have such a ridiculous idea. > The commercial was, of course, not intended as an attack on the fledgling emu-farming industry...But believe it or not, this commercial destroyed the emu-farming industry. I'd like to think my sarcasm is self-deprecating humor and I'm not putting anyone else down, but my kids will give me מוסר when I've gone too far. Sarcasm is so ingrained into Jewish culture that it's impossible to root it out; even our greatest נביאים get sarcastic: {:he} >ויהי בצהרים ויהתל בהם אליהו ויאמר קראו בקול גדול כי אלהים הוא כי שיח וכי שיג לו וכי דרך לו; אולי ישן הוא ויקץ׃ --מלכים א יח:כז The reason that it is so pernicious is that it's not always bad: {:he} >אמר רב נחמן: כל ליצנותא אסירא חוץ מליצנותא דעבודת כוכבים דשריא, דכתיב (ישעיהו מו:א-ב) כָּרַע בֵּל קֹרֵס נְבוֹ...קָרְסוּ כָרְעוּ יַחְדָּו לֹא יָכְלוּ מַלֵּט מַשָּׂא. --סנהדרין סג,ב >We can lock /lashon hara/ away in the forbidden zone, because we are *never* allowed to speak /lashon hara/. We can lock dishonesty away in a forbidden zone, because we are never allowed to lie. We can lock sycophantic flattery away in a forbidden zone, because it is always forbidden. But we cannot do the same for cynicism. We cannot say, "Never be a cynic". It is simply not true. From time to time, you have to be a cynic. The third of wisdom's complaint, the כסיל, is different. They don't act on their knowledge. "I know what I want to do, so it must be the right thing to do, and any implication to the contrary is simply wrong". >The /kesil/ is a "passion-fool".
