You want to know which voice to listen to? Remember the Torah I am teaching you, and learn the wisdom that is consistent with that. Then you will have ארך ימים ושנות חיים. That is a striking expression: length of days, and years of life. They are gifts from הקב״ה. Such יסורים come to teach a lesson, and happy is the one who can see that: "Happy is the one whom ה׳ chastises and learns from Your Torah". It's a slightly different approach from the גם זו לטובה. The lesson of יסורין של אהבה is not that it will be OK in the end, but that these difficult times are actually inherently good. It is the suffering that is beneficial (a trivial example is getting enough exercise). There is a contrast in ספר דברים: {:he} ><b>לא</b> ובמדבר אשר ראית אשר נשאך ה׳ אלקיך כאשר ישא איש את בנו בכל הדרך אשר הלכתם עד באכם עד המקום הזה׃ <b>לב</b> ובדבר הזה אינכם מאמינם בה׳ אלקיכם׃ --דברים פרק א {:he} >וידעת עם לבבך; כי כאשר ייסר איש את בנו ה׳ אלקיך מיסרך׃ --דברים ח:ה When ה׳ carries you כאשר ישא איש את בנו, you end up אינכם מאמינם בה׳. The state of ידעת עם לבבך is only כאשר ייסר איש את בנו. >Moses asks, “Did you not feel held by G-d as He carried you?” But the question answers itself: a child that is too small to walk on its own does not have the meta-consciousness to appreciate its dependence. Babies cry. It’s expected. You can’t reason with a baby and say “Why didn’t you believe in Me?” A baby wants to be held, needs to be held, but only knows this need when it is unfulfilled. The baby comes into a sense of self only by being deprived. The “I” emerges only with the “Not-I.” > The people lack belief because they lack maturity. Here’s an irony: the child that walks independently can believe, but the child that needs to be carried cannot. Said differently: Spiritual distance from G-d enables belief in G-d, while spiritual proximity to G-d may obstruct it. Being carried by G-d is a form of intimacy in one sense, but it’s also a form of distance in another: without a real separation from G-d, and space between themselves and G-d, the people don’t know what’s carrying them. The people can’t know G-d unless they know themselves. And how can they know themselves when they’ve spent hundreds of years in a state of bondage? --Zohar Atkins, [_Should Belief Protect Us From Anxiety, Sadness, Anger?_](https://etzhasadeh.substack.com/p/should-belief-protect-us-from-anxiety) ---- Shlomo returns to the metaphor of חכמה being more valuable than riches: {:he} ><b>יג</b> אשרי אדם מצא חכמה; ואדם יפיק תבונה׃<br/> <b>יד</b> כי טוב סחרה מסחר כסף; ומחרוץ תבואתה׃<br/> <b>טו</b> יקרה היא מפנינים; וכל חפציך לא ישוו בה׃ --משלי פרק ג We saw this in the last perek: {:he} >אם תבקשנה ככסף; וכמטמונים תחפשנה׃ --משלי ב:ד And we will see this metaphor again later: {:he} >אשת חיל מי ימצא; ורחק מפנינים מכרה׃ --משלי לא:י ---- And the conclusion of this section is a series of famous psukim: {:he} ><b>טז</b> ארך ימים בימינה; בשמאולה עשר וכבוד׃<br/> <b>יז</b> דרכיה דרכי נעם; וכל נתיבותיה שלום׃<br/> <b>יח</b> עץ חיים היא למחזיקים בה; ותמכיה מאשר׃ --משלי פרק ג חכמה will grant you all sorts of good things if you hold on to it. תמכיה usually means "those who support *it*", but Rashi says that here, it means that *it* is supporting you when you get close to it. {:he} ><em>ותומכיה מאושר</em>: המתקרבים לה וכן כל לשון תמיכה שבספר זה שהוא אוחז בה. --רש"י, משלי ג:יח And this metaphor of חכמה as an עץ חיים, a tree of life, comes up a lot in משלי: {:he} >פרי צדיק עץ חיים; ולקח נפשות חכם׃ --משלי יא:ל {:he} >תוחלת ממשכה מחלה לב; ועץ חיים תאוה באה׃ --משלי יג:יב {:he} >מרפא לשון עץ חיים; וסלף בה שבר ברוח׃ --משלי טו:ד The image of course comes from גן עדן: {:he} ><b>ח</b> ויטע ה׳ אלקים גן בעדן מקדם; וישם שם את האדם אשר יצר׃ <b>ט</b> ויצמח ה׳ אלקים מן האדמה כל עץ נחמד למראה וטוב למאכל ועץ החיים בתוך הגן ועץ הדעת טוב ורע׃ --בראשית פרק ב {:he} ><b>כב</b> ויאמר ה׳ אלקים הן האדם היה כאחד ממנו לדעת טוב ורע; ועתה פן ישלח ידו ולקח גם מעץ החיים ואכל וחי לעלם׃ <b>כג</b> וישלחהו ה׳ אלקים מגן עדן לעבד את האדמה אשר לקח משם׃ <b>כד</b> ויגרש את האדם; וישכן מקדם לגן עדן את הכרבים ואת להט החרב המתהפכת לשמר את דרך עץ החיים׃ --בראשית פרק ג The idea of an עץ חיים is not that אדם could eat of it once and live forever; it supports life as long as one continues to consume it. {:he} ><em>ועץ החיים</em>: פריו היה כל כך נאות למזג אנושי שבאכילתו ישוב הבשר והליחות כמו אותו שניתך ממנו בלי חסרון, והיה מונע התכת הגוף, ובזה היה האדם מאריך ימים בתמידות כמאמרם: אילמלי לא חטא אדה"ר לא היה מת. --הכתב והקבלה, בראשית ב:ט We don't have the עץ חיים of גן עדן any more, but if we continue to consume the metaphoric fruit of תורה and חכמה, we will continue to have ארך ימים. The idea (if not the literal words) of an עץ חיים comes up after יציאת מצרים: {:he} ><b>כב</b> ויסע משה את ישראל מים סוף ויצאו אל מדבר שור; וילכו שלשת ימים במדבר ולא מצאו מים׃ <b>כג</b> ויבאו מרתה ולא יכלו לשתת מים ממרה כי מרים הם; על כן קרא שמה מרה׃ <b>כד</b> וילנו העם על משה לאמר מה נשתה׃ <b>כה</b> ויצעק אל ה׳ ויורהו ה׳ עץ וישלך אל המים וימתקו המים; שם שם לו חק ומשפט ושם נסהו׃ <b>כו</b> ויאמר אם שמוע תשמע לקול ה׳ אלקיך והישר בעיניו תעשה והאזנת למצותיו ושמרת כל חקיו כל המחלה אשר שמתי במצרים לא אשים עליך כי אני ה׳ רפאך׃ --שמות פרק טו The Torah is obviously connecting the עץ of וימתקו המים with שם שם לו חק ומשפט. The עץ represents the rules, the structure of the society that בני ישראל would have to form. {:he} >ועל דרך הפשט, כאשר החלו לבא במדבר הגדול והנורא וצמאון אשר אין מים שם להם במחייתם וצרכיהם מנהגים אשר ינהגו בהם עד בואם אל ארץ נושבת, כי המנהג יקרא חק...ויקרא משפט בהיותו משוער כהוגן. --רמב"ן, שמות טו:כה {:he} >במרה נתן להם מקצת פרשיות של תורה שיתעסקו בהם, שבת ופרה אדמה ודינין. --רש"י, שמות טו:כה {:he} ><em>שבת ופרה אדומה ודינין</em>: פירוש מדכתיב "חק", ולא נקרא סתם "חק" רק פרה אדומה, שאין טעם למצוה. ודינין למד מדכתב "משפט". --גור אריה, שמות טו:כה The Torah emphasizes that this עץ was a form of הוראה, teaching: {:he} >רבי שמעון בן יוחי אומר: דבר מן התורה הראהו, שנאמר "ויורהו יי עץ". ”ויראהו יי עץ“ אינו אומר, אלא "ויורהו", כענין שנאמר: (משלי ד:ד) וַיֹּרֵנִי וַיֹּאמֶר לִי יִתְמׇךְ דְּבָרַי לִבֶּךָ שְׁמֹר מִצְוֺתַי וֶחְיֵה...דורשי רשומות אומרין: הראהו דברי תורה, שנמשלו לעץ, שנאמר: "עץ חיים היא למחזיקים בה, ותמכיה מאשר". --מכילתא דרבי ישמעאל, מַסֶּכְתָּא דְוַיַּסַּע א:טו I've mentioned before that water is a symbol of chaos, society without structure. {:he} >המים אין להם צורה גמורה, ולכך נקראים תמיד בלשון רבים, ולא תמצא לשון יחיד במים. לפי שכל אחדות מכח הצורה המאחד את הדבר, והמים הם בלי צורה גמורה, ולפיכך המים, שהם בלי צורה מקוימת, בלשון רבים. --גבורות השם יח And that was the problem at מרה: {:he} ><em>ויבואו מרתה ולא יכלו לשתות מים ממרה כי מרים הם</em>]: אמר ר' לוי למה ”כי מרים הם“, הדור היה מר במעשיו. --תנחומא בובר, ויקהל ט The tree is a symbol of the structure that allows the מים to become sweet and life-giving.
