This section of פרק ה starts with the apostrophe to בנים, in the plural, alluding back to the start of פרק ד, where the plural was meant to be figurative but not metaphoric: Shlomo is addressing the Jewish people, who are (דברים יד:א)‎ בנים אתם לה׳ אלקיכם, and this is meant to be autobiographical. {:he} ><b>ז</b> ועתה בנים שמעו לי; ואל תסורו מאמרי פי׃<br/> <b>ח</b> הרחק מעליה דרכך; ואל תקרב אל פתח ביתה׃ --משלי פרק ה He is talking about the "double-edged sword" of the אשה זרה, the חכמה בגוים. How can we learn without being seduced away from Torah? >Until now, we have asked rabbinical students to go to university. Instead, we should request that they do not go university. "Anyone who increases in Torah and fear of Heaven is praiseworthy". Not whoever increases in philosophy. And so too with the education of the children: they should not be asked to go into a profession that requires reading anti-Torah literature. About this it is written: "Distance your way from her, and don't get close to the entrance of her house" (Mishlei 5:8). He is extending the metaphor: you can talk to her, but don't go home with her. Rabbi Shalom Carmy used that metaphor, of the wisdom of the Torah and the wisdom of the nations as separate houses, to discuss the study of Tanach. How can we use the insights of academic Bible study, archeology and literature without falling into heresy? Those insights are real and important, and we lose something of our own Torah study if we ignore them. We need to stay in our own house and look into the other one. As his title says, we need _A Room With a View, But a Room of Our Own_. > Every facet of Torah is intimately related to the others. If we think of Torah as a mansion, each discipline within Torah can be compared to one of the rooms.../Torah she-b'al Peh/ is a central chamber in the house of Torah: it communicates with all the other rooms...It is not accidental that those Rishonim and Aharonim who most magnificently explored the peshat...were equally renowned as Talmudists: Rashi, Rashbam, Ramban, among the medievals; the Vilna Gaon, Netziv, /Meshekh Hokhma/ and R. He warns his audience about עצביך בבית נכרי: your toil will end up in a foreign house. {:he .lines} ><b>ט</b> פן תתן לאחרים הודך; ושנתיך לאכזרי׃ <b>י</b> פן ישבעו זרים כחך; ועצביך בבית נכרי׃ <b>יא</b> ונהמת באחריתך; בכלות בשרך ושארך׃ <b>יב</b> ואמרת איך שנאתי מוסר; ותוכחת נאץ לבי׃ <b>יג</b> ולא שמעתי בקול מורי; ולמלמדי לא הטיתי אזני׃ <b>יד</b> כמעט הייתי בכל רע בתוך קהל ועדה׃ --משלי פרק ה {:he} ><em>ועצביך</em>: המונך ונכסיך שהשגת בעצבון כמ"ש (בראשית ג:יז) בְּעִצָּבוֹן תֹּאכֲלֶנָּה. --מלבי"ם, משלי ה:י עצב means "sadness" in modern Hebrew, but in תנ״ך it has a subtly different connotation: {:he} ><b>כח</b> ויחי למך שתים ושמנים שנה ומאת שנה; ויולד בן׃ <b>כט</b> ויקרא את שמו נח לאמר; זה ינחמנו ממעשנו ומ*עצבון* ידינו מן האדמה אשר אררה ה׳׃ --בראשית פרק ה Artscroll translates עצבון as "toil": <blockquote lang=en><p>And he called his son Noah, saying, “This one will bring us rest from our work and from <em>the toil</em> of our hands, from the ground which Hashem had cursed”.</p> <footer class=source>Artscroll Chumash, <i lang=la>loc. cit.</i></footer></blockquote> It's a reference to the original curse of Adam: {:he} ><b>יז</b> ולאדם אמר כי שמעת לקול אשתך ותאכל מן העץ אשר צויתיך לאמר לא תאכל ממנו ארורה האדמה בעבורך ב*עצבון* תאכלנה כל ימי חייך׃ <b>יח</b> וקוץ ודרדר תצמיח לך; ואכלת את עשב השדה׃ --בראשית פרק ג The word עצבון comes up in the curse of Chava as well: {:he} >אל האשה אמר הרבה ארבה *עצבונך* והרנך ב*עצב* תלדי בנים; ואל אישך תשוקתך והוא ימשל בך׃ --בראשית ג:טז And עצב can also mean "formed": {:he} >יָדֶיךָ עִצְּבוּנִי וַיַּעֲשׂוּנִי; יַחַד סָבִיב וַתְּבַלְּעֵנִי׃ --איוב פרק י:ח Which is how תהילים uses the word, as "things formed by people, idols": {:he} >עצביהם כסף וזהב; מעשה ידי אדם׃ --תהילים קטו:ד Dr. Zornberg says that the two meanings of עצב--misery and formation--are really the same. She notes that both curses of עצבון, of צער גידול בנים and of קוץ ודרדר תצמיח לך, are curses that despite all their toil, the results are completely out of their hands: <blockquote lang=en><p>Now Eve is initiated into a world in which this creative will meets inevitable frustration: parents raise children a projection of their own desires, only to discover that children develop desires of their own. Here, the planting may come to bear very little resemblance to the yield.</p> <p>In both love and work, then, <i lang=he>itzavon</i> is the strange fruit of intentionality, of "sowing seed" toward an imagined future...For Adam, a similar discontinuity will haunt his relations with the earth. The gap, the arbitrary response of the earth to his desire, expresses a radical irrationality in human experience. Creative aspiration acquires an ironic edge.</p> <footer class=source>Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg, <cite>The Murmuring Deep</cite>, pp. 40-41</footer></blockquote> עצבון is the עצב, the misery, of toil: when all your effort, all your hard work, comes to nothing. And עצבון is what G-d feels when His creation fails Him: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ה</b> וירא ה׳ כי רבה רעת האדם בארץ וכל יצר מחשבת לבו רק רע כל היום׃ <b>ו</b> וינחם ה׳ כי עשה את האדם בארץ; ויתעצב אל לבו׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק ו</footer></blockquote> So פן...עצביך בבית נכרי here refers to the feeling of frustration, of working incredibly hard and getting nowhere; others will reap the benefit. And I am claiming that this is autobiographical. It's not explicit in תנ״ך, but there is a very odd aggadah that is brought in a number of places. We go to Shlomo building the בית המקדש: {:he} >והבית בהבנתו אבן שלמה מסע נבנה; ומקבות והגרזן כל כלי ברזל לא נשמע בבית בהבנתו׃ --מלכים א ו:ז And to his description of his wealth in קהלת: {:he} >כנסתי לי גם כסף וזהב וסגלת מלכים והמדינות; עשיתי לי שָׁרִים וְשָׁרוֹת ותענגות בני האדם שִׁדָּה וְשִׁדּוֹת׃ --קהלת ב:ח שִׁדָּה וְשִׁדּוֹת is an odd phrase. It's usually translated as "treasure chests" (JPS uses "coffers"), with the singular and plural as a sort of merism meaning "of all possible kinds". But the gemara says it refers to שֵּׁדִים, demons. {:he} >”שרים ושרות“--אלו מיני זמר, ”ותענוגות בני האדם“--אלו בריכות ומרחצאות, ”שדה ושדות“--הכא תרגימו: שֵׁידָה וְשֵׁידְתִין... > דכתיב: ”והבית בהבנותו אבן שלמה מסע נבנה וגו׳“. אמר להו לרבנן: היכי אעביד? אמרו ליה: איכא שמירא דאייתי משה לאבני אפוד...אייתי שידה ושידתין כבשינהו אהדדי, אמרי: אנן לא ידעינן, דילמא אשמדאי, מלכא דשידי, ידע... > לסוף תלתא יומי עייל [אשמדאי] לקמיה. שקל קניא, ומשח ארבעה גרמידי, ושדא קמיה. אמר ליה: מכדי כי מיית ההוא גברא, לית ליה בהדין עלמא אלא ארבעה גרמידי; השתא כבשתיה לכולי עלמא, ולא שבעת עד דכבשת נמי לדידי?!.. > אמר ליה: לא קא בעינא מינך מידי; בעינא דאיבנייה לבית המקדש, וקא מיבעי לי שמירא... > תרחיה גביה עד דבנייה לבית המקדש. יומא חד הוה קאי לחודיה, אמר ליה: כתיב (במדבר כד:ח): אֵ־ל מוֹצִיאוֹ מִמִּצְרַיִם כְּתוֹעֲפֹת רְאֵם לוֹ; ואמרינן: כְּתוֹעֲפֹת--אלו מלאכי השרת, רְאֵם--אלו השדים. מאי רבותייכו מינן? אמר ליה: שקול שושילתא מינאי, והב לי עיזקתך, ואחוי לך רבותאי. שקליה לשושילתא מיניה, ויהיב ליה עיזקתיה. בלעיה, אותביה לחד גפיה ברקיעא, ולחד גפיה בארעא, פתקיה ארבע מאה פרסי. על ההיא שעתא אמר שלמה (קהלת א:ג): מַה יִּתְרוֹן לָאָדָם בְּכׇל עֲמָלוֹ שֶׁיַּעֲמֹל תַּחַת הַשָּׁמֶשׁ. --גיטין סח,א-ב Even though Shlomo initially says לא קא בעינא מינך מידי, eventually he wants to know מאי רבותייכו מינן: what is the source of your power. That is his downfall. אשמדאי takes his place on the throne, and Shlomo has nothing. {:he} >כד הוה שלמה מלכא יתיב על כורסי מלכותיה אתגבה לביה לחדא על עתריה ועבר על גזירת מימרא דיי וכנש סוסוון ורתיכין ופרשין סגיאין וצבר כספא ודהבא לחדא ואתחתן בעממין נוכראין. מן יד תקיף רוגזא דיי עלוהי ושדר לותיה אשמדאי מלכא דשידי וטרד יתיה מן כורסי מלכותיה ונטל גושפנקיה מן ידיה, בגין דיהך מטלטל וגלי בעלמא לאוכיחותיה והוה מחזר על כרכי פלכי וכרכי ארעא דישראל בכא ופגן ואמר אנא קהלת דהוה שמיה שלמה מתקרי מן קדמת דנא הויתי מלכא על ישראל בירושלם. --תרגום קהלת א:יב {:he} >אמר הקדוש ברוך הוא (קהלת ב:ב) וּלְשִׂמְחָה מַה זֹּה עֹשָׂה; מה עטרה זו עושה בידך? רד מכסאי! באותה שעה ירד מלאך בדמותו של שלמה וישב על כסאו, והיה מחזר על בתי כנסיות ועל בתי מדרשות ועל בתי גדולי ישראל, ואומר (קהלת א:יב): אֲנִי קֹהֶלֶת הָיִיתִי מֶלֶךְ [עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל בִּירוּשָׁלָ͏ִם], והיו מכין אותו בקנה ונותנין לפניו קערה של גריסין, באותה שעה בכה ואמר (קהלת ב:י): וְזֶה הָיָה חֶלְקִי מִכׇּל עֲמָלִי. --קוהלת רבה ב:ב Eventually, the sages figure out that it isn't Shlomo on the throne but an impostor. They realize this because, instead of being focused on wisdom, he is spending all his time with his many wives: {:he} >אמרו ליה לבניהו [ראש הסנהדרין]: קא בעי לך מלכא לגביה? אמר להו: לא. שלחו להו למלכוותא: קאתי מלכא לגבייכו? שלחו להו: אין, קאתי...וקא תבע להו בנידותייהו. --גיטין סח,ב And Shlomo is restored to his throne but a shadow of his former self. {:he} >...כיון שבנה בית המקדש, וכל המעשה של אשמדאי, וכיון שחטא טרדו אשמדאי; ולאחר שחזר למלכותו היה פחדו עליו... --במדבר רבה יא:ג {:he} >אמר ריש לקיש בתחילה מלך שלמה על העליונים שנאמר (דברי הימים א כט:כג) וַיֵּשֶׁב שְׁלֹמֹה עַל כִּסֵּא ה׳ ולבסוף מלך על התחתונים שנאמר (מלכים א ה:ד) כִּי הוּא רֹדֶה בְּכׇל עֵבֶר הַנָּהָר מִתִּפְסַח וְעַד עַזָּה. --סנהדרין כ,ב That's all really weird. But we have to take aggadot seriously, not literally. We have a story here of Shlomo wanting to build the בית המקדש, inviting demons to help who eventually take over, and then Shlomo isn't himself, (מלכים א ה:יא)‎ וַיֶּחְכַּם מִכָּל הָאָדָם, but now he is קאתי מלכא למלכוותא. And those foreign wives are what seduced Shlomo away from עבודת ה׳: {:he} ><b>א</b> והמלך שלמה אהב נשים נכריות רבות ואת בת פרעה; מואביות עמניות אדמית צדנית חתית׃ <b>ב</b> מן הגוים אשר אמר ה׳ אל בני ישראל לא תבאו בהם והם לא יבאו בכם אכן יטו את לבבכם אחרי אלהיהם בהם דבק שלמה לאהבה׃ <b>ג</b> ויהי לו נשים שרות שבע מאות ופלגשים שלש מאות; ויטו נשיו את לבו׃ <b>ד</b> ויהי לעת זקנת שלמה נשיו הטו את לבבו אחרי אלהים אחרים; ולא היה לבבו שלם עם ה׳ אלקיו כלבב דויד אביו׃ <b>ה</b> וילך שלמה אחרי עשתרת אלהי צדנים; ואחרי מלכם שקץ עמנים׃ <b>ו</b> ויעש שלמה הרע בעיני ה׳; ולא מלא אחרי ה׳ כדוד אביו׃ --מלכים א פרק יא And the problem started right at the beginning: Shlomo builds a house for הקב״ה and a house for בת פרעה at the same time. {:he} ><b>ו:יד</b>ויבן שלמה את הבית ויכלהו׃...<b>ז:ח</b> וביתו אשר ישב שם חצר האחרת מבית לאולם כמעשה הזה היה; ובית יעשה לבת פרעה אשר לקח שלמה כאולם הזה׃...<b>ט:י</b> ויהי מקצה עשרים שנה אשר בנה שלמה את שני הבתים את בית ה׳ ואת בית המלך׃ --מלכים א We already have the אשה זרה as a symbol of foreign wisdom, and the בית as the system of knowledge and the {:de}/weltanschauung/ that holds it together. אשמדאי represents the temptation of that foreign wisdom, that Shlomo needed to build the בית for ה׳, but ended up enticing him away: מאי רבותייכו מינן? >In the Zohar, Ashmedai is represented as the teacher of Solomon, to whom he gave a book of magic and medicine (Zohar Lev. pp. 19a, 43a; Zohar Num. 199b, ed. Wilna). --The Jewish Encyclopedia (1906), [_Asmodeus_](https://jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/1996-ashmodai#anchor9) And he actually did need foreign know-how to build the בית המקדש: {:he} ><b>טז</b> וישלח שלמה אל חירם לאמר׃...<b>יט</b> והנני אמר לבנות בית לשם ה׳ אלקי; כאשר דבר ה׳ אל דוד אבי לאמר בנך אשר אתן תחתיך על כסאך הוא יבנה הבית לשמי׃ <b>כ</b> ועתה צוה ויכרתו לי ארזים מן הלבנון ועבדי יהיו עם עבדיך ושכר עבדיך אתן לך ככל אשר תאמר; כי אתה ידעת כי אין בנו איש ידע לכרת עצים כצדנים׃ --מלכים א פרק ה {:he} >ולכן כתוב [בזוהר] על וַה׳ נָתַן חׇכְמָה לִשְׁלֹמֹה [כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר לוֹ] וַיְהִי שָׁלֹם בֵּין חִירָם וּבֵין שְׁלֹמֹה [וַיִּכְרְתוּ בְרִית שְׁנֵיהֶם]. מה ענין זה לזה. אבל אמרו שם כי חירם היה חכם גדול בחכמת הכישוף ובחכמת השדים...עד שמצד שה' נתן חכמה לשלמה ויהי שלום בין חירם. --צרור המור על התורה, שמות כח:לא Rav Kook put the image together: {:he} >מה אנחנו למדים מזה? אנחנו למדים איך עלינו לנהוג בשעה שאנו נזקקים לשאול את השאלות של הקודש והחול. לפי הנהוג בעולם, חושב האדם בתחילת מחשבתו, שהקודש והחול הם בבחינת ”ויתרוצצו“, שהם דברים הצוררים זה את זה. אולם האמת היא, שאין כל ניגוד בין הקודש והחול...בשעה שאנחנו באים לסגנן את החיים, לתת לחיים צורה חיצונית, אנחנו אומרים שכשם שאין אנו נעלבים מזה שבשעה שניגש שלמה לבנות את בית המקדש הוא שלח למלך חירם בקשה לתתלו אנשים לכרות בעדו עצים (מלכים א ה:כ): כִּי אַתָּה יָדַעְתָּ כִּי אֵין בָּנוּ אִישׁ יֹדֵעַ לִכְרׇת עֵצִים כַּצִּדֹנִים, כך לא נֵעלב אם נצטרך להשתמש בעזרת כוחות חוץ בהכנת הצורה החיצונית לחיים. צידונים כרתו עצים ,וגם גרים שהיו בארץ היו מסתתים את האבנים. > אבל עצם קדושת המקדש נשארה בידינו, וידענו לשמור את קדושת המקדש ועבודת הקודש...ואנחנו שואבים את כח חיינו הלאומיים מאותו המקור הנצחי שהוא יכול לבלות עולמים, זמנים נצחיים ולא רק דורות, שהוא ישאר לנו לעולמים מקור בלתי נשאב. --[הראי"ה קוק, מאמרי הראי"ה ח"ב עמ' 4](https://nishmat.net/uploads/files/Wisdom_of_Nations.pdf) That, in the metaphor of משלי and of Rav Carmy, is the problem. ובית יעשה לבת פרעה...כאולם הזה. {:.lines} >Listen boy, it's good information From a man who's made mistakes --Billy Joel, [_Tell Her About It _](https://www.onefinalserenade.com/tell-her-about-it.html) So that is what Shlomo is telling us now: ואל תקרב אל פתח ביתה...פן ישבעו זרים כחך; ועצביך בבית נכרי. ---- Shlomo continues with a new metaphor: {:he} ><b>טו</b> שתה מים מבורך; ונזלים מתוך בארך׃<br/> <b>טז</b> יפוצו מעינתיך חוצה; ברחבות פלגי מים׃<br/> <b>יז</b> יהיו לך לבדך; ואין לזרים אתך׃ --משלי פרק ה The metaphor of water as Torah is a common one; (בבא קמא פב,א)‎ אין מים אלא תורה. Here the emphasis is that you should drink water from your own well; other wells exist, but only this will allow you to thrive. Yirmiyahu uses a similar metaphor: {:he} >כי שתים רעות עשה עמי; אתי עזבו מקור מים חיים לחצב להם בארות בארת נשברים אשר לא יכלו המים׃ --ירמיהו ב:יג Not only did you abandon your original source of "water", but the water sources you went to were dry. But Shlomo says, stick to *your* water sources, in four stages. {:he} >וז״ש שְׁתֵה מַיִם מִבּוֹרֶךָ, היינו כשמקבץ מים ממקום אחר שלומד מאחרים. וְנֹזְלִים מִתּוֹךְ בְּאֵרֶךָ כשאתה לומד לבדך והחדש דברים והוא לך כמעין נובע. יָפוּצוּ מַעְיְנֹתֶיךָ חוּצָה היינו אח״כ תלמוד גם אתה לאחרים. בָּרְחֹבוֹת פַּלְגֵי מָיִם כי בללמד לאחרים הוא ג״כ ב׳ דברים: א׳ כשמלמד בעצמו לאחרים; ב׳ הן אותן שלא למדו אצלו, רק שתורתו נתפשט בכל המקומות ושומעין תורתו ולומדין אותם. וזהו בָּרְחֹבוֹת, כמתפשטין בכל מקום. --ביאור הגר״א לספר משלי ה:טו-טז Learning *your* wisdom will allow you to become a source of wisdom for others. The midrash adds that it's not just learning Torah that is important; it's learning *locally*. {:he} ><em>שתה מים מבורך, ונוזלים מתוך בארך</em>: כיצד? אם רוצה אדם ללמוד תורה, אל יאמר ”אלמד מן הרחוק ואחר-כך אלמד מן הקרוב“, אלא ילמוד מן הקרוב ואחר-כך מן הרחוק. --מדרש משלי ה:טו This is the idea of an LOR: having a Local Orthodox Rabbi. The Torah says: {:he} ><b>יא</b> כי המצוה הזאת אשר אנכי מצוך היום לא נפלאת הוא ממך ולא רחקה הוא׃ <b>יב</b> לא בשמים הוא; לאמר מי יעלה לנו השמימה ויקחה לנו וישמענו אתה ונעשנה׃ <b>יג</b> ולא מעבר לים הוא; לאמר מי יעבר לנו אל עבר הים ויקחה לנו וישמענו אתה ונעשנה׃ <b>יד</b> כי קרוב אליך הדבר מאד; בפיך ובלבבך לעשתו׃ --דברים פרק ל And we know the interpretation of לא בשמים היא: don't look to heaven to understand the Torah. {:he} >אמר רב יהודה אמר שמואל: שלשת אלפים הלכות נשתכחו בימי אבלו של משה אמרו לו ליהושע: שאל! א״ל: *לא בשמים היא*. --תמורה טז,א I propose that לא מעבר לים הוא has the same implication: you don't have to go to far away places to learn Torah (I have not seen anyone else who connects the concept of מרא דאתרא to this pasuk).
