When David gives Avshalom leave to ״אשלם את נדרי אשר נדרתי לה׳ בחברון״, Avshalom does three things: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>י</b> וישלח אבשלום מרגלים בכל שבטי ישראל לאמר; כשמעכם את קול השפר ואמרתם מלך אבשלום בחברון׃ <b>יא</b> ואת אבשלום הלכו מאתים איש מירושלם קראים והלכים לתמם; ולא ידעו כל דבר׃ <b>יב</b> וישלח אבשלום את אחיתפל הגילני יועץ דוד מעירו מגלה בזבחו את הזבחים; ויהי הקשר אמץ והעם הולך ורב את אבשלום׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק טו</footer></blockquote> The first is to signal his co-conspirators throughout the country (we haven't seen them, but they clearly exist) that they will soon hear the call to war. That's what the shofar fundamentally is: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ב</b> בן אדם דבר אל בני עמך ואמרת אליהם ארץ כי אביא עליה חרב; ולקחו עם הארץ איש אחד מקציהם ונתנו אתו להם לצפה׃ <b>ג</b> וראה את החרב באה על הארץ; ותקע בשופר והזהיר את העם׃ <b>ד</b> ושמע השמע את קול השופר ולא נזהר ותבוא חרב ותקחהו דמו בראשו יהיה׃ ... <b>ו</b> והצפה כי יראה את החרב באה ולא תקע בשופר והעם לא נזהר ותבוא חרב ותקח מהם נפש הוא בעונו נלקח ודמו מיד הצפה אדרש׃ </p> <footer class=source>יחזקאל פרק לג</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p> ויהי בבואו ויתקע בשופר בהר אפרים; וירדו עמו בני ישראל מן ההר והוא לפניהם׃</p> <footer class=source>שופטים ג:כז</footer></blockquote> The second is to invite מאתים איש מירושלם. They explicitly are לא ידעו כל דבר; they are *not* co-conspirators. What are they doing here? Avshalom is fulfilling a נדר that involves זבחו את הזבחים, offering שלמים (the term זבח and קרבן שלמים are used interchangeably in the Torah), offerings that have the blood sprinkled and the fat burned on the altar, but are eaten by the people. So I *have* to share. <blockquote lang="en"><p>Shadal (Sh’mu’el David Luzzato, 19th century Italian commentator) suggests that the reasoning behind the law of <i lang=he>pigul</i> is akin to the gleanings. If the Torah had allowed a goodwill offering (<i lang=he>Korban Sh’lamim</i>) to be eaten over an indefinite time period, the individual would likely eat some, with his family and close friends, during the first few days after bringing it. He would then store it away and continue to “celebrate” with his entourage. Keep in mind that a <i lang=he>Sh’lamim</i> is brought from the flock or the herd—a large animal which cannot be devoured quickly. Since the Torah commands that a Sh’lamim must be eaten on the day that it is offered and the morrow...the one bringing the offering will perforce share it with many others.</p> <footer class="source"><a href="http://www.torah.org/advanced/mikra/5767/kedoshim.html">Rabbi Yitzchak Etshalom, <cite>Speak to the Entire Congregation</cite></a></footer></blockquote> So maybe this is an explanation for the pasuk about Avshalom's hair: <blockquote lang=he><p>ובגלחו את ראשו והיה מקץ ימים לימים אשר יגלח כי כבד עליו וגלחו; ושקל את שער ראשו <em>מאתים שקלים באבן המלך</em>׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק יד:כו</footer></blockquote> We pointed out that 200 shekels is about 2 kilograms. That's a lot more than a full head of hair: <blockquote lang=en><p>Many sources suggest that a full head of long hair weighs around an ounce or two (30–60 grams). Its maximum weight can go up to 5 pounds.</p> <footer class=source>Essie Button, <a href="https://www.essiebutton.com/how-much-does-hair-weigh/"><cite>How Much Does Your Hair Weigh?</cite></a></footer></blockquote> So maybe the 200 shekels was the amount he *spent* on his hair-cutting party. That's a lot of sheep: <blockquote lang=he><p>נפש כי תמעל מעל וחטאה בשגגה מקדשי ה׳; והביא את אשמו לה׳ <em>איל תמים מן הצאן בערכך כסף שקלים</em> בשקל הקדש לאשם׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא פרק ה:טו</footer></blockquote> So Avshalom has had a huge annual affair in Chevron, and David would not be suspicious if he invited some of the Jerusalem elite. But this time, Avshalom has a different plan. <blockquote lang=he><p>א״ל [דוד לאבשלום]: ומה את בעי כדון? א״ל [אבשלום לדוד] כתוב חד פיתק דתרין גוברין דנסבינון עימי. אמר ליה: אמור לי למאן דאת בעי ואנא כתוב. אמר ליה: כתוב לה סתם ואנא למאן דבעי אנא נסב. כתב ליה סתם. אזל וצמת ליה תרין תרין גוברין עד דצמת ליה מאתן גוברין. הדא הוא דכתיב ”ואת אבשלום הלכו מאתים איש מירושלים קרואים והולכים לתומם “. קרואים מדוד, והולכים לתומם מאבשלום, ולא ידעו כל דבר מעצת אחיתופל. רבי הונא בשם רבי אחא: וכולהו ראשי סנהדריות היו.</p> <footer class=source>ירושלמי סוטה א:ח, דף ז,ב-ח,א</footer></blockquote> (and maybe the מאתים שקלים are a hint to the מאתים איש, though I think that's too cute) So Avshalom has these 200 ראשי סנהדריות at a perfectly innocuous קרבן שלמים party when he sudden announces מלך אבשלום בחברון. They are stuck. Will David believe them that they are הלכים לתמם ולא ידעו כל דבר? He's only authorized 2 of them to come. The rest *must* be part of Avshalom's conspiracy. So Avshalom has just neutralized David's political support. The third thing that Avshalom does is calls Achitophel. We've looked at Achitophel in detail <a href="/Frenemies/">before</a>, since he is the grandfather of Bat Sheva. He was the chief military advisor to David until he realized the enormity of what David had done to his granddaughter. Avshalom now has the military strength, the political strength and the strategic advice that will allow him to topple his father. <blockquote lang=he><p>ועצת אחיתפל אשר יעץ בימים ההם כאשר ישאל (איש) בדבר האלקים; כן כל עצת אחיתפל גם לדוד גם לאבשלם׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב טז:כג</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>אמר להם: לכו פשטו ידיכם בגדוד. מיד יועצין באחיתופל ונמלכין בסנהדרין ושואלין באורים ותומים.</p> <footer class=source>סנהדרין טז,א-ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>לא היה דוד אוהב לאדם יותר מלאחיתופל והוא היה בעל מחלוקת שלו. והוא יועצו כל העצות.</p> <footer class=source>מדרש שחר טוב נה:א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>שכפי הנראה שנאת אחיתופל לדוד וקשרו עם אבשלום נקבע על ידי מעשה זה, ששמר לו איבה עבור שלקח את נכדו בחזקה. כי לולא זאת, רחוק הוא איפוא שאחיתופל שידע שהמלכות שמורה לשלמה בן נכדו יהיה בקושרים עם אבשלום להסב המלוכה אליו.</p> <footer class=source>מלבי״ם, שמואל ב יא:ו</footer></blockquote> And Achitophel, it would seem, has been the power behind the throne (or the attempt at the throne) the whole time: <blockquote lang=he><p>ראיתי בקהלת יעקב, וכן הוא באריכות באברבנל...שפירשו שאבשלום לא רצה לקחת את המלוכה מדוד אביו ורצה למלוך רק בחברון כמו שמלך דוד בחברון לפני שמלך על כל ישראל, בזמן שאיש בושת מלך על כל ישראל, והוא היה מלך רק על יהודה בחברון, ובאופן דומה היה דוד עצמו משוח למלוכה בזמן שאול, אפילו ששאול עדיין היה מלך. ובאופן זה היתה התכנית של אבשלום להמליך את עצמו על חברון כל ימי דוד אביו, ולאחר פטירתו של דוד, יקבל באופן טבעי את המלוכה על כל ישראל, ע״י שיהיה משוח מלוכה בימי אביו ומלך בחברון. וזו היתה תכניתו של אבשלום עצמו, ועכ״פ הוא ביקש שזה מה שיגיע לאזנו של דוד אביו, שאבשלום המליך עצמו על חברון.</p> <p>אבל אחיתופל שהיה שונא את דוד, הוא נתן את העצה, שאבשלום יהרוג את דוד, ואף הציע את עצמו לעשות את זאת בפועל, כמו שאמר לקמן בפרק י״ז פסוקים א-ב ”ואקומה וארדפה אחרי דוד הלילה. ואבוא עליו והוא יגע ורפה ידים והחרדתי אותו וגו׳ והכיתי את המלך לבדו“... </p> <p>וראיתי לומר, שלכך ביקש אבשלום גם את דעת חושי הארכי, כי לא היה נראה לו כ״כ, מה שהציע אחיתופל להרוג את דוד, וחשש פן שנאתו של אחיתופל לדוד קלקלה את השורה, והפעם אין עצתו טובה, כיון שיש לו נגיעות ושנאה אישית לדוד. ולכך ביקש לשמוע גם את עצת חושי הארכי, שהיה ידיד דוד, שעצתו היתה לתפוס את דוד מבלי להרוג אותו, כמבואר בפסוקים שם.</p> <footer class=source>משבצות זהב, שמואל ב טו:י</footer></blockquote> <hr/> David realizes that he is in trouble and flees with whoever is still loyal. <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יג</b> ויבא המגיד אל דוד לאמר; היה לב איש ישראל אחרי אבשלום׃ <b>יד</b> ויאמר דוד לכל עבדיו אשר אתו בירושלם קומו ונברחה כי לא תהיה לנו פליטה מפני אבשלם; מהרו ללכת פן ימהר והשגנו והדיח עלינו את הרעה והכה העיר לפי חרב׃ <b>טו</b> ויאמרו עבדי המלך אל המלך; ככל אשר יבחר אדני המלך הנה עבדיך׃ <b>טז</b> ויצא המלך וכל ביתו ברגליו; ויעזב המלך את עשר נשים פלגשים לשמר הבית׃ <b>יז</b> ויצא המלך וכל העם ברגליו; ויעמדו בית המרחק׃ <b>יח</b> וכל עבדיו עברים על ידו וכל הכרתי וכל הפלתי; וכל הגתים שש מאות איש אשר באו ברגלו מגת עברים על פני המלך׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק טו</footer></blockquote> David is leaving but not in a panic. He goes in stages, collecting his people first from the palace (ויצא המלך וכל ביתו) then to the outskirts of the city (בית המרחק) with his people from all of Jerusalem (ויצא המלך וכל העם). <blockquote lang=he><p><em>אשר ברגליך</em>: הַהוֹלְכִים אַחַר עֲצָתְךָ וְהִלּוּכְךָ.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שמות יא:ח</footer></blockquote> The עשר נשים פלגשים is a little bit of foreshadowing. We've seen the כרתי ופלתי before: <blockquote lang="he"><p><b>יד</b> וימלך דויד על כל ישראל; ויהי עשה משפט וצדקה לכל עמו׃... <b>יז</b> ובניהו בן יהוידע על הכרתי והפלתי; ובני דויד הראשנים ליד המלך׃</p> <footer class="source">דברי הימים א פרק יח</footer></blockquote> As we said <a href="/Happily+Ever+After/">before</a>, it's not clear what that means. The Targum assumes they were a military force: the archers and slingers: <blockquote lang=he><p> וּבְנָיָהוּ בַּר יְהוֹיָדָע מְמַנָא עַל קַשְׁתַּיָא וְעַל קַלְעֲיָא...</p> <footer class=source>תרגום יונתן, שמואל ב ח:יח</footer></blockquote> Some assume they are names of families or nations: <blockquote lang=he><p> וי״מ כרתי ופלתי שתי משפחות היו מישראל שהיו סרים א־ל משמעות המלך ורואים פניו תמיד ובניהו היה בראשם.</p> <footer class=source>רד״ק, שמואל ב ח:יח</footer></blockquote> But that doesn't help us (it may have been obvious to contemporary readers); why those families? What did they do? The gemara assumes that they are part of the civil administration of David; what it calls the Sanhedrin: <blockquote lang=he><p>ופי׳ ר״ת דכרתי ופלתי היינו סנהדרין שכורתין דבריהם לאמתן ופלתי שמופלאים בהוראה כמו מופלא שבבית דין.</p> <footer class=source>תוספות, ברכות ד,א </footer></blockquote> I could go either way, and would argue that *both* are correct. David's administration may well have been made up of his closest companions from his days as a warrior; we will see this in פרק כג when we see the list of הגברים אשר לדוד that חז״ל understand to be תלמידי חכמים as well. And the other military force that stays with David are the גתים. This reminds us that some 30+ years ago, David was a *Philistine* general. <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויקבצו פלשתים את כל מחניהם אפקה; וישראל חנים בעין אשר ביזרעאל׃ <b>ב</b> וסרני פלשתים עברים למאות ולאלפים; ודוד ואנשיו עברים באחרנה עם אכיש׃ <b>ג</b> ויאמרו שרי פלשתים מה העברים האלה; ויאמר אכיש אל שרי פלשתים הלוא זה דוד עבד שאול מלך ישראל אשר היה אתי זה ימים או זה שנים ולא מצאתי בו מאומה מיום נפלו עד היום הזה׃ </p> ... <p><b>ו</b> ויקרא אכיש אל דוד ויאמר אליו חי ה׳ כי ישר אתה וטוב בעיני צאתך ובאך אתי במחנה כי לא מצאתי בך רעה מיום באך אלי עד היום הזה; ובעיני הסרנים לא טוב אתה׃ <b>ז</b> ועתה שוב ולך בשלום; ולא תעשה רע בעיני סרני פלשתים׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמואל א פרק כט</footer></blockquote> So at least some of his Philistine companions stayed loyal to him, and moved with him to Jerusalem. <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יט</b> ויאמר המלך אל אתי הגתי למה תלך גם אתה אתנו; שוב ושב עם המלך כי נכרי אתה וגם גלה אתה למקומך׃ <b>כ</b> תמול בואך והיום אנועך (אניעך) עמנו ללכת ואני הולך על אשר אני הולך; שוב והשב את אחיך עמך חסד ואמת׃ <b>כא</b> ויען אתי את המלך ויאמר; חי ה׳ וחי אדני המלך כי אם ( ) במקום אשר יהיה שם אדני המלך אם למות אם לחיים כי שם יהיה עבדך׃ <b>כב</b> ויאמר דוד אל אתי לך ועבר; ויעבר אתי הגתי וכל אנשיו וכל הטף אשר אתו׃ <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק טו</footer></blockquote> And as he looks at his band of supporters, he realizes that he has finally lost the מלכות: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>שוב ושב עם המלך</em>: פי׳ עם אבשלום המלך שרצו ישראל להמליכו.</p> <footer class=source>רד״ק, שמואל ב פרק טו:יט</footer></blockquote> And them David crosses the Kidron, leaving Jerusalem for the wilderness to the east. Even though we learned that היה לב איש ישראל אחרי אבשלום, he still has many supporters including the supporters he values most: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כג</b> וכל הארץ בוכים קול גדול וכל העם עברים; והמלך עבר בנחל קדרון וכל העם עברים על פני דרך את המדבר׃ <b>כד</b> והנה גם צדוק וכל הלוים אתו נשאים את ארון ברית האלקים ויצקו את ארון האלקים ויעל אביתר עד תם כל העם לעבור מן העיר׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק טו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יא</b> ויקרא דויד לצדוק ולאביתר הכהנים; וללוים לאוריאל עשיה ויואל שמעיה ואליאל ועמינדב׃ </p> <p>...<b>טו</b> וישאו בני הלוים את ארון האלקים כאשר צוה משה כדבר ה׳ בכתפם במטות עליהם׃ </p> <footer class=source>דברי הימים א פרק טו</footer></blockquote> צדוק was the כהן in the משכן: <blockquote lang=he><p>ואת צדוק הכהן ואחיו הכהנים לפני משכן ה׳ בבמה אשר בגבעון׃</p> <footer class=source>דברי הימים א טז:לט</footer></blockquote> And אביתר was David's כהן גדול in Chevron and then in Jerusalem, with ארון. The מצודת דוד points out that אביתר isn't in the list of David's admisistration in פרק ח, because their history together goes back even farther: <blockquote lang=he><p>ולא חשב את אביתר לכהן גדול כי לא הועמד עתה כ״א מאז מלך על יהודה.</p> <footer class=source>מצודת דוד, שמואל ב ח:יז</footer></blockquote> What does David do with the ארון that is about to go into exile with him? We shall see. <hr/> There is a פרק תהילים that explicits deals with David's state of mind at this time: <blockquote lang=he><p>מזמור לדוד; בברחו מפני אבשלום בנו׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים ג:א</footer></blockquote> And we've mentioned before that even the תהילים that have an explicit historical כותרת do not deal explicitly with those historic events; they are more expressions of feelings that were evoked by those events. The psalmist translated those feelings into universally-applicable poetry. <blockquote lang=he><p> ולפי דרך הפשט: כי המזמורים לא היו נקראים בשעת מעשה אלא על שם שהיו מזמרים בהם בבית המקדש.</p> <footer class=source>רד״ק, תהילים ג:א</footer></blockquote> >[P]oetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquillity: the emotion is contemplated till, by a species of reaction, the tranquillity gradually disappears, and an emotion, kindred to that which was before the subject of contemplation, is gradually produced, and does itself actually exist in the mind. It's not wrong. G-d *is* אלקים, and justice will be served. The truly penitent man who returns with all his heart is worthy of complete pardon and protection from ה׳, Hashem, the All Merciful. --Artscroll /Tehillim/, III:4 כבוד is often in תהילים used in the sense of soul, צלם אלוקים, but here is parallel to מרים ראשי: honor. Not only will I not be killed, but I will retain my honor. I will return to previous status. {:he} >*ואתה ה׳*: אבל לא כן הוא כי אתה מגן בעדי ותומך כבודי ומרים ראשי כי אחזור למלכותי. --מצודת דוד, תהילים ג:ד And it's not really the מלכות that he hopes to return to. Nathan has told him that he will lose that, and he can't claim to deserve to get it back. What he wants to return to is קולי אל ה׳ אקרא; he wants to be the נעים זמירות ישראל again.
