I want to start by talking about bentching. {:he} >כִּי הָא דְּאָמַר רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן מִשּׁוּם רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן יוֹחַי: בַּעַל הַבַּיִת בּוֹצֵעַ, וְאוֹרֵחַ מְבָרֵךְ. בַּעַל הַבַּיִת בּוֹצֵעַ— כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּבְצַע בְּעַיִן יָפָה. וְאוֹרֵחַ מְבָרֵךְ—כְּדֵי שֶׁיְּבָרֵךְ בַּעַל הַבַּיִת. מַאי מְבָרֵךְ? ”יְהִי רָצוֹן שֶׁלֹּא יֵבוֹשׁ בַּעַל הַבַּיִת בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה, וְלֹא יִכָּלֵם לְעוֹלָם הַבָּא“. וְרַבִּי מוֹסִיף בָּהּ דְּבָרִים: ”וְיִצְלַח מְאֹד בְּכָל נְכָסָיו, וְיִהְיוּ נְכָסָיו וּנְכָסֵינוּ מוּצְלָחִים וּקְרוֹבִים לָעִיר, וְאַל יִשְׁלוֹט שָׂטָן לֹא בְּמַעֲשֵׂי יָדָיו וְלֹא בְּמַעֲשֵׂי יָדֵינוּ, וְאַל יִזְדַּקֵּר לֹא לְפָנָיו וְלֹא לְפָנֵינוּ שׁוּם דְּבַר הִרְהוּר חֵטְא וַעֲבֵירָה וְעָוֹן מֵעַתָּה וְעַד עוֹלָם“. --ברכות מו,א The Rambam says that the "ברכת האורך", as it is called in the halacha, does not have a fixed text. You can say whatever you want: {:he} >כשמברך האורח אצל בעל הבית, מוסיף בה ברכה לבעל הבית. כיצד מברכו--אומר ”יהי רצון שלא תבוש בעל הבית בעולם הזה, ולא תיכלם לעולם הבא“; ויש לו רשות להוסיף בברכת בעל הבית, ולהאריך בה. --משנה תורה, הלכות ברכות ב:ז And nowadays we have expanded this ברכת האורך to almost double the size of bentching (all the הרחמן's are part of this section; the formal ברכת המזון ends with לעולם אל יחסרינו) and we even say it when we are not a guest; we bless ourselves. The center of our ברכת האורך is: {:he} >הָרַחֲמָן הוּא יְבָרֵךְ אֶת בַּֽעַל הַבַּֽיִת הַזֶּה, וְאֶת בַּעֲלַת הַבַּֽיִת הַזֶּה, אוֹתָם וְאֶת־בֵּיתָם וְאֶת־זַרְעָם וְאֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר לָהֶם אוֹתָֽנוּ וְאֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר לָֽנוּ, כְּמוֹ שֶׁנִּתְבָּרְ֒כוּ אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ, אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק וְיַעֲקֹב: בַּכֹּל, מִכֹּל, כֹּל, כֵּן יְבָרֵךְ אוֹתָֽנוּ כֻּלָּֽנוּ יַֽחַד, בִּבְרָכָה שְׁלֵמָה, וְנֹאמַר אָמֵן. --ברכת המזון We say it all the time, but what is בַּכֹּל, מִכֹּל, כֹּל? The expression comes from the gemara: {:he} >תָּנוּ רַבָּנַן: שְׁלֹשָׁה הִטְעִימָן הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה מֵעֵין הָעוֹלָם הַבָּא. אֵלּוּ הֵן: אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק וְיַעֲקֹב. אַבְרָהָם, דִּכְתִיב בֵּיהּ בַּכֹּל; יִצְחָק, דִּכְתִיב בֵּיהּ מִכֹּל. יַעֲקֹב ,דִּכְתִיב בֵּיהּ כֹּל. --בבא בתרא טז,ב-יז,א And *that* is the connection to this week's parsha: each of the אבות were blessed with a variation on the word כֹּל, and we ask that our host be similarly blessed: {:he} >ואברהם זקן בא בימים; וה׳ ברך את אברהם *בכל*׃ --בראשית כד:א {:he} > ויחרד יצחק חרדה גדלה עד מאד ויאמר מי אפוא הוא הצד ציד ויבא לי ואכל *מכל* בטרם תבוא ואברכהו; גם ברוך יהיה׃ --בראשית כז:לג {:he} ><b>י</b> ויאמר יעקב אל נא אם נא מצאתי חן בעיניך ולקחת מנחתי מידי; כי על כן ראיתי פניך כראת פני אלקים ותרצני׃ <b>יא</b> קח נא את ברכתי אשר הבאת לך כי חנני אלקים וכי יש לי *כל*; ויפצר בו ויקח׃ --בראשית פרק לג As an aside, Rabbi Gail Labovitz, former chair of the Department of Rabbinics at the Ziegler School, proposed an egalitarian equivalent for the אמהות: {:he} >כמו שנתברכו אמותינו שרה רבקה רחל ולאה, ב־(בראשית יב:טז) הֵיטִיב, (בראשית כד:טז) טֹבַת, (בראשית כט:יט) טוֹב,(בראשית ל:כ) טוֹב... --[Madame Rabbi Doctor Professor](http://shma.com/s-blog-thats-madame-rabbi-doctor-professor-to-you/) Gail Labovitz, [_As Our Matriarchs Were Blessed_](https://www.aju.edu/ziegler-school-rabbinic-studies/our-torah/back-issues/our-matriarchs-were-blessed) And this is exactly the part of ברכת המזון where innovations like this are appropriate; יש לו רשות להוסיף בברכת בעל הבית (assuming your host appreciates it). ---- >You can't have everything. The commentators bring many interpretations: {:he} ><em>ברך את אברהם בכל</em>. בַּכֹּל עוֹלֶה בְּגִימַטְרִיָּא בֵּן, וּמֵאַחַר שֶׁהָיָה לוֹ בֵּן הָיָה צָרִיךְ לְהַשִּׂיאוֹ אִשָּׁה. --רש״י, בראשית כד:א {:he} ><em>ברך את אברהם בכל</em>: באורך ימים ועושר וכבוד ובנים מכל חמדת האדם. --אבן עזרא, בראשית כד:א {:he} >מַאי ”בַּכֹּל“? רַבִּי מֵאִיר אוֹמֵר שֶׁלֹּא הָיְתָה לוֹ בַּת. רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר שֶׁהָיְתָה לוֹ בַּת. --בבא בתרא טז,ב (Rabbi Meir feels that having a daughter who would have to marry out and be lost to the Jewish people would be no blessing) {:he} ><em>ואכל מכל</em>: מִכָּל טְעָמִים שֶׁבִּקַּשְׁתִּי לִטְעֹם, טָעַמְתִּי בוֹ. --רש״י, בראשית כז:לג {:he} ><em>כי חנני אלקים וכי יש לי כל</em>:...אף שנתתי לך יש לי כל ולא חסר לי מאומה, כי ברכת ה' היא תעשיר אותי. --מלבי״ם, בראשית לג:יא But the underlying message seems to be clearest from the contrast with Esav's comment: {:he} >ויאמר עשו יש לי *רב*; אחי יהי לך אשר לך׃ --בראשית לג:ט {:he} ><em>ויאמר עשו יש לי רב</em>: משמע רב אבל לא כל, ויעקב אמר כי חנני אלקים וכי יש לי כל, לפי שהרשעים אע"פ שיש להם כל כסף וזהב שבעולם מ"מ נראה להם שעדיין הם חסרים, ויש להם רב אבל לא כל צרכם, לכך אמר עשו יש לי רב אבל לא כל כי עדיין חסרים המה, יש בידו מנה מתאוה למאתים, והצדיקים בהפך זה כי אפילו אם יש מעט בידם הם מסתפקים בו ושמחים בחלקם, ונראה כאלו יש להם כל. --כלי יקר, בראשית לג:ט To sum up, the ברכה of בַּכֹּל מִכֹּל כֹּל is the message of the mishna: {:he} >איזהו עשיר? השמח בחלקו. --משנה אבות ד:א ---- However, there is a certain irony in each of these examples of כֹּל; each was an awareness of something they didn't have; they *don't* have everything. Avraham realizes that having a child isn't enough; he needs grandchildren. Yitzchak realizes that he doesn't understand his children at all. Yaakov realizes that despite the ברכות that ה׳ gave him, he is still subject to the whims of his psychopath brother. And they *still* felt that they had כֹּל. It's not just being satisfied with what you have; it's realizing that everything you have, even the lack of something, is a gift from G-d. That is the טעם מעין עולם הבא. When we look back from עולם הבא, we will see how everything worked out. Here it means quite literally, *everything*: {:he} >וירא אלקים את *כל* אשר עשה והנה טוב מאד; ויהי ערב ויהי בקר יום הששי׃ --בראשית א:לא >The word *everything* (/kol/) is a small and apparently non-remarkable word, yet it appears far more frequently in the book of Genesis than any other book of the Torah, suggesting that it may have a special connection to the story of Creation and beginnings. Genesis 1 ends with God observing everything that God has made. Ironically, just as God beholds that it is “very good,” a storm is brewing in Paradise; the story is just underway. Atkins points out that Avraham gave his כל to Yitzchak: {:he} ><b>ה</b> ויתן אברהם את כל אשר לו ליצחק׃ <b>ו</b> ולבני הפילגשים אשר לאברהם נתן אברהם מתנת; וישלחם מעל יצחק בנו בעודנו חי קדמה אל ארץ קדם׃ --בראשית פרק כה But כל is not a מתנה, not a gift. It's a responsibility. >The *everything* that Abraham gives Isaac includes some burdens, including that of being the child of a founder who often put mission over family. For Abraham’s children by concubinage, the legacy of this great man was only positive. Since they knew Abraham more as a persona, only at a distance, their inheritance included only “gifts”: they lacked the difficult intimacy Isaac had with his father. It may not be a מתנה, but it is a ברכה. Totality means we can know and objectify it, infinity means we can’t. The laws of nature are a totality. Our encounter with a human face reveals infinity. G-d blessed Abraham with infinity, an appreciation for the uniqueness of his life and every human life. Abraham did not have everything in any objective sense; he didn’t need it.
