In this week's parsha, Yaakov returns to the land and settles in Shechem: {:he} ><b>יח</b> ויבא יעקב שלם עיר שכם אשר בארץ כנען בבאו מפדן ארם; ויחן את פני העיר׃ <b>יט</b> ויקן את חלקת השדה אשר נטה שם אהלו מיד בני חמור אבי שכם במאה קשיטה׃ <b>כ</b> ויצב שם מזבח; ויקרא לו א־ל אלקי ישראל׃ --בראשית פרק לג Rashi (in most editions) makes the comment: {:he} ><em>ויחן את פני העיר</em>: ערב שבת היה. בשאילתות דרב אחאי. --רש״י, בראשית לג:יח (בכמה מהדורות) My first reaction is, What? Where does that come from? Looking at the original aggadah doesn't help: {:he} >רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן בְּשֵׁם רַבִּי יוֹסֵי בַּר חֲלַפְתָּא אָמַר: אַבְרָהָם שֶׁאֵין כָּתוּב בּוֹ שְׁמִירַת שַׁבָּת, יָרַשׁ אֶת הָעוֹלָם בְּמִדָּה, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (בראשית יג:יז): קוּם הִתְהַלֵּךְ בָּאָרֶץ לְאָרְכָּהּ וּלְרָחְבָּהּ [כִּי לְךָ אֶתְּנֶנָּה]. אֲבָל יַעֲקֹב שֶׁכָּתוּב בּוֹ שְׁמִירַת שַׁבָּת, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (בראשית לג:יח): וַיִּחַן אֶת פְּנֵי הָעִיר; נִכְנַס עִם דִּמְדּוּמֵי חַמָּה, וְקָבַע תְּחוּמִין מִבְּעוֹד יוֹם, יָרַשׁ אֶת הָעוֹלָם שֶׁלֹא בְּמִדָּה, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (בראשית כח:יד): וְהָיָה זַרְעֲךָ כַּעֲפַר הָאָרֶץ [וּפָרַצְתָּ יָמָּה וָקֵדְמָה וְצָפֹנָה וָנֶגְבָּה]. --בראשית רבה יא:ז So Yaakov camps "את פני העיר" because it's too close to Shabbos to make it inside? And he sets up a תחום, so he can travel 2000 /amot/ on Shabbos, because *of course* he knew about the מצווה דרבנן of ערוב תחומים. It's like the old joke: >The question is asked: How do we know that Yaakov Avinu..wore a [black hat]? > And it is answered with the verse...ויצא יעקב מבאר שבע— Jacob left from Beersheva—how could he leave his house without wearing his hat?! --Anne Gordon, [_Reuven’s gift_](https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/reuvens-gift/) I will use the approach of the Meshach Chochmah, as understood by Rav Yehudah Copperman, taking it seriously but not literally. But before we look at the Meshech Chochmah, we need to understand what Yaakov is doing. He's just come back from Charan, confronted Esav and all his old demons, on the east side of the Jordan. He crossed over into Israel at Beit She'an, took the 71 to Afula then turned south on the 60, came to Shechem and later in the parsha will continue on the 60 to Beit El then Bethlehem and eventually move in with his father in Chevron. He was in Charan for 20 years, then two years on the road, for a total of 22 years. His youngest children (Zevulun, Dinah and Yosef) were 8 years old when he arrives in Shechem. We don't know the chronology from there, but next week's parsha starts with Yosef at the age of 17. So the journey from Shechem to Chevron takes up to 9 years. He isn't constantly on the move; he buys land, builds a מזבח in Shechem. He intends to live there. חז״ל say Yaakov did not fulfill כיבוד אב ואם for 22 years, so I would assume that even if he didn't *move* to Chevron until much later, he went down to visit his parents often enough to count (his mother doesn't die until after he moves to Beit El). We don't know how old Dinah was when she was raped, but she is called a (בראשית לד:ד)‎ ילדה, so she is less than 12. So Yaakov is living in Shechem for up to 3 years. ---- The Targum Yonatan on the Torah (an aggadic translation; to impress people, call it "Targum Pseudo-Jonathan") adds something to Yaakov's ויצב שם מזבח: {:he} >וְאָקִים תַּמָן מַדְבְּחָא *וְתַמָן יְהַב מַעְשְרַיָא דְאַפְרֵישׁ מִן כָּל דִילֵיהּ* קֳדָם אֵ־ל אֱלָקָא דְיִשְרָאֵל: --תרגום יונתן, בראשית לג:כ Another strange aggadah. Where does the tithing come from? Yaakov vowed to give מעשר, back when he left כנען: {:he} ><b>כ</b> וידר יעקב נדר לאמר; אם יהיה אלקים עמדי ושמרני בדרך הזה אשר אנכי הולך ונתן לי לחם לאכל ובגד ללבש׃ <b>כא</b> ושבתי בשלום אל בית אבי; והיה ה׳ לי לאלקים׃ <b>כב</b> והאבן הזאת אשר שמתי מצבה יהיה בית אלקים; וכל אשר תתן לי עשר אעשרנו לך׃ --בראשית פרק כח {:he} ><em>והאבן הזאת</em>: כך תפרש וי"ו זו של והאבן: אם תעשה לי את אלה, אני אעשה זאת. --רש״י, בראשית כח:כב So Rav Yaakov Kaminetsky says that calling the altar in the name of אלקי ישראל‎ (ויצב שם מזבח; ויקרא לו א־ל אלקי ישראל) was Yaakov's statement that ה׳ in fact was *his* G-d, that ה׳ had supported him and now it was time to fulfill the vow: {:he} >אבל מהיכן הוציא כאן מה שכתב? ואפשר שדייק ממה שקרא המזבח בשם ”אלקי ישראל“, והיינו שזהו קיום התנאי שנדר (בראשית כח:כא) וְהָיָה ה׳ לִי לֵאלֹקִים, וכאן וַיִּקְרָא לוֹ [אֵ־ל אֱלֹקֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל], הרי שנתקיים התנאי שהתנה, ועל כן נקראו בשם זה כדי שיתחייב במעשר, ודו״ק. --אמת ליעקב, בראשית לג:כ The bottom line is that Yaakov intends to live in Shechem, and fulfill his vow there. The מזבח here *is* the בית אלקים; it's not quite the right place andה׳ takes him to task for that: {:he} ><em>[ויאמר אלקים] אל יעקב קום עלה בית אל [ושב שם ועשה שם מזבח]</em>: לפי שאחרת בדרך נענשת ובא לך זאת מבתך. --רש״י, בראשית לה:א But he does build a מזבח and so, Yaakov is continuing the mission of the אבות. {:he} >ויעתק משם ההרה מקדם לבית אל ויט אהלה; בית אל מים והעי מקדם ויבן שם מזבח לה׳ ויקרא בשם ה׳׃ --בראשית יב:ח {:he} > ויבן שם מזבח ויקרא בשם ה׳ ויט שם אהלו; ויכרו שם עבדי יצחק באר׃ --בראשית כו:כה The purpose of the מזבח is not the קרבנות per se; the purpose of the מזבח is ויקרא בשם ה׳, to declare ה׳'s glory to the world. As we've said, that doesn't require a מזבח: {:he} >ויטע אשל בבאר שבע; ויקרא שם בשם ה׳ א־ל עולם׃ --בראשית כא:לג ---- What does all that have to do with Yaakov's קָבַע תְּחוּמִין מִבְּעוֹד יוֹם? We know that חז״ל say that the אבות kept the whole Torah: {:he} >אמר (רב), ואיתימא רב אשי: קיים אברהם אבינו אפילו עירובי תבשילין. --יומא כח,ב But that can't be taken literally (Yaakov is married to sisters!). >The avot did not observe the mitzvot in the sense in which we observe them. They did not put on tefillin or shake the lulav. The purpose of creation is for everyone to be "special", to fill their own unique role in fulfilling רצון ה׳. The תחומים are there to allow us to develop into something special, to be a nation that is an example to other nations, of honesty, lack of מחלקת, of what the Torah calls יראת אלקים. The תחומים that Yaakov set up have the same purpose as Avraham's overt evangelism, לתקן עולם במלכות ש־די. Here, ויחן את פני העיר. The word ויחן comes up one more time in the Torah: {:he} >וַיִּסְעוּ מֵרְפִידִים וַיָּבֹאוּ מִדְבַּר סִינַי וַיַּחֲנוּ בַּמִּדְבָּר; וַיִּחַן שָׁם יִשְׂרָאֵל נֶגֶד הָהָר׃ --שמות יט:ב {:he} ><em>ויחן שם ישראל</em>: כאיש אחד בלב אחד, אבל שאר כל החניות בתרעומות ובמחלקת. --רש"י, שמות יט:ב {:he} >בסיני איפקוד על תחומין ש”ויחן ישראל“ והיו ראוים לקבל התורה ואז ניתן תחומין כמו ליעקב. --משך חכמה, וישלח, בראשית לג:יח And when Yaakov settles in Shechem, that is exactly how he is seen by his neighbors. He arrives שלם:‎ ויבא יעקב שלם עיר שכם. And that is how they see him: {:he} >האנשים האלה *שלמים הם אתנו* וישבו בארץ ויסחרו אתה והארץ הנה רחבת ידים לפניהם; את בנתם נקח לנו לנשים ואת בנתינו נתן להם׃ --בראשית לד:כא And that is destroyed when Shimon and Levi take their revenge: {:he} >ויאמר יעקב אל שמעון ואל לוי *עכרתם אתי להבאישני בישב הארץ* בכנעני ובפרזי; ואני מתי מספר ונאספו עלי והכוני ונשמדתי אני וביתי׃ --בראשית לד:ל {:he} >ויסעו; ויהי חתת אלקים על הערים אשר סביבותיהם ולא רדפו אחרי בני יעקב׃ --בראשית לה:ה >[I]t is much safer to be feared than loved. --Niccolo Machiavelli,[The Prince, Chapter 17](https://www.gutenberg.org/files/1232/1232-h/1232-h.htm#chap17) It may be *safer* to be feared, but in the worldview of the אבות, it accomplishes nothing. And those תחומים in our original aggadah leads to the ultimate reward: {:he} > יַעֲקֹב שֶׁ...קָבַע תְּחוּמִין מִבְּעוֹד יוֹם, יָרַשׁ אֶת הָעוֹלָם שֶׁלֹא בְּמִדָּה, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (בראשית כח:יד): וְהָיָה זַרְעֲךָ כַּעֲפַר הָאָרֶץ [וּפָרַצְתָּ יָמָּה וָקֵדְמָה וְצָפֹנָה וָנֶגְבָּה] --בראשית רבה יא:ז That is the implication of Yeshaya's נבואה: {:he} ><b>יג</b> אם תשיב משבת רגלך עשות חפצך ביום קדשי; וקראת לשבת ענג לקדוש ה׳ מכבד וכבדתו מעשות דרכיך ממצוא חפצך ודבר דבר׃ <b>יד</b> אז תתענג על ה׳ והרכבתיך על במתי ארץ; והאכלתיך נחלת יעקב אביך כי פי ה׳ דבר׃ --ישעיהו פרק נח {:he} >וזה שאמר הנביא ”אם תשיב משבת רגליך“ זה על תחומין כמוש"כ ז"ל [ערובין נב,ב]: ”והאכלתיך נחלת יעקב אביך“, זה יעקב שקבע תחומין; וזכה למדה בלא גבול, ”ופרצת ימה וקדמה“. בשכר שהוא קבע גבול ותחומין זכה לנחלה בלא גבול. ודו"ק היטב. --משך חכמה, וישלח, בראשית לג:יח As Rav Copperman summarizes: {:he} >באשר הדרך אל ”וכל בני בשר יקראו בשמך“ (החזון האוניברסאלי) היא באמצעות ”שלא שם חלקנו כהם וגורלנו ככל המונם“. --הרב יהודה קופרמן, פירוש משך חכמה על התורה, בראשית לג:יח, הערה 42 We need to be special, so that everyone can be special.
