I’m in wedding mode, so I want to look at this week’s haftorah, which ends on happy note:
The metaphor in הושע is of ישראל as an unfaithful wife, but ה׳ so loves her that He will seduce her again, bringing back the days when they were “engaged” in the wilderness.
And that is the idea of וארשתיך לי לעולם: not that the engagement will last forever, but that the feeling, the closeness, will last forever.
This is a very different model for the ultimate גאולה than the one we are used to.
הושע tells us that, maybe, if we don’t do תשובה, then ה׳ will entice us back and that will lead to ישראל עושין תשובה ומחזירן למוטב.
When does that apply? I think the answer is implied in the beginning of the haftorah:
If we can get to the point of נקבצו בני יהודה ובני ישראל יחדו ושמו להם ראש אחד then ה׳ will see fit to try to woo us back rather than beat us into submission. אחדות ישראל leads to גאולה.
That leads me to an idea about a halachic issue that we mentioned last week:
Now, שבועות is not one of the four “ראשי השנה” mentioned in the Mishna, but it is one of the times when the world is judged:
So the תכלה שנה וקללותיה is not so much about the “new year” aspect as much as the “judgment for the coming year”. Last year may have been tough; we were not judged for the good. May next year be better.
But that’s not what we do. We read כי תבוא, with the קללות שבמשנה תורה, two weeks before ראש השנה, and בחוקותי, with the קללות שבתורת כהנים, two weeks before שבועות.
So, the תקנה was to read the קללות “before”, but Tosfot tells us we want a buffer between those קללות and the יום טוב. Why? R' Tzadok tries to understand the purpose of reading the קללות:
So now we understand why we don’t read כי תבוא right before ראש השנה. We read כי תבוא and then נצבים, because תכלה שנה וקללותיה is not a prayer; it’s a command:
נצבים tells us what to do instead:
קורין קללות שבתורת כהנים קודם עצרת is similar. Don’t do the things that lead to the תוכחות of last week; do the commandments of this week, of פרשת במדבר:
As we approach the re-enactment of מעמד הר סיני and מתן תורה, we are given a choice: פרשת בחוקותי or פרשת במדבר. The גאולה will happen, but we have to choose the מלך שגזרותיו קשות model or the אנכי מפתיה והלכתיה המדבר; ודברתי על לבה model. And that depends on שאו את ראש כל עדת בני ישראל, on אמרו לאחיכם עמי.
