I think David is making the point that צדיק אתה ה׳; G-d is the <i lang=he>definition</i> of justice. As Rav Soloveitchik said, <blockquote lang="en"><p>[T]here are not sharply delineated territories or realms between those of non-rational precepts and those of rational laws. A clearly defined distinction between חוקים and משפטים is almost non-existent...That is the basic reason why secular ethics has failed. Because the element of חוק is not understandable and not comprehensible to secular man. The answer lies in the joy of discovering G-d’s mind. Talmud Torah demands intense engagement with G-d’s will in order to bring to light new facets of the Divine Mind. To study Torah leads to new insights. And with every insight there emerges a deeper sense of the infinity of insights still hidden, waiting to be gleaned. The חכמה of חכמי ישראל is "part of G-d", חלק מחכמתו. If the Torah was the "blueprint" for creation, then the world was created to fulfill the Torah. Do we really need a revealed Torah? Note that the quote from Mishlei refers to חָכְמָה is general. They did not put on tefillin or shake the lulav. This is what is means, צדקתך צדק לעולם; ותורתך אמת. We are obligated to understand what we can; that is חכמה and is valuable, but we cannot say that it is the absolute רצון ה׳. <hr/> Then why bother with all other sources of knowledge? But over the past century there has been the increasing use of exactly that sort of חכמת האומות in learning Torah: <blockquote lang=en><p> I call my own <i lang=he>derekh ha-limmud</i> a <em>literary-theological</em> approach...By theological, we assert the conviction that Bible is to be encountered as the word of G-d, rather than primarily as the object of academic investigation; we also refer to the authoritative presence of the interpretive tradition.
