Here, טוב is a leitwort, the theme word of the section. As <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Cover">Robert Cover</a>, a Yale law professor and Jewish activist, put it: <blockquote lang=he><p>שמעון הצדיק היה משיירי אנשי כנסת הגדולה. הוא היה אומר, על שלושה דברים העולם עומד--על התורה, ועל העבודה, ועל גמילות החסדים.</p> <footer class=source>משנה אבות א:ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>The "world" of which Simeon the Just spoke was the <i lang=el> nomos</i>, the normative universe.</p> ... <p>This <i lang=el> nomos</i> is as much "our world" as is the physical universe of mass, energy, and momentum. Indeed, our apprehension of the structure of the normative world is no less fundamental than our appreciation of the structure of the physical world. </p> ...<p>A <i lang=el> nomos</i>, as a world of law, entails the application of human will to an extant state of affairs as well as toward our visions of alternative futures. There are two aspects to this טוב, טעם and דעת. תהילים פרק לד uses parallel language, of טעם and ראיה: <blockquote lang=he><p> טַעֲמוּ וּרְאוּ כִּי טוֹב ה׳; אַשְׁרֵי הַגֶּבֶר יֶחֱסֶה בּוֹ׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק לד:ט</footer></blockquote> I think this represents what we talked about <a href="/Let+Me+Count+the+Ways+%D7%97">last time</a>, of two aspects of our learning Torah: what we could call "left brain", analytic and orderly, and "right brain", emotional and holistic. And it is the emotional side, the טעם, that David emphasizes in ספר תהילים. The intellectual side of Torah, the דעת, is generally identified with הלכה. The underlying reasons for the laws, as well as the emotion import they have, the טעם, is generally identified with אגדה. And we need both, not only to be able to enjoy Torah, but to make sense of the הלכה at all. To quote Robert Cover again: <blockquote lang="en"> <p>For every constitution there is an epic, for each Decalogue a scripture.</p> <p>We inhabit a <i lang="el"> nomos</i>—a normative universe...[L]aw becomes not merely a system of rules to be observed, but a world in which we live.</p> <p>In this normative world, law and narrative are inseparably related. Every prescription is insistent in its demand to be located in discourse—to be supplied with history and destiny, beginning and end, explanation and purpose. And every narrative is insistent in its demand for its prescriptive point, its moral.
