We ended the last shiur talking about holding on to the "Tree of Life", as a metaphor for חכמה. Shlomo now looks at G-d's חכמה: {:he} ><b>יט</b> ה׳ בחכמה יסד ארץ; כונן שמים בתבונה׃<br/> <b>כ</b> בדעתו תהומות נבקעו; ושחקים ירעפו טל׃ --משלי פרק ג In the context of ספר משלי, human חכמה,‎ בינה and דעת are all about the use of our minds to decide the right and good behavior. Here we use the same terms to describe ה׳. But that's not the same thing. For many of ה׳'s attributes, we talk about הלכת בדרכיו, imitating G-d. But we can't imitate ה׳'s knowlege; our intellect is by definition limited. {:he} >שמא תאמר והלא הקדוש ברוך הוא יודע כל מה שיהיה וקדם שיהיה ידע שזה יהיה צדיק או רשע או לא ידע. אם ידע שהוא יהיה צדיק אי אפשר שלא יהיה צדיק ואם תאמר שידע שיהיה צדיק ואפשר שיהיה רשע הרי לא ידע הדבר על בריו. דע שתשובת שאלה זו ארכה מארץ מדה ורחבה מני ים וכמה עקרים גדולים והררים רמים תלויים בה אבל צריך אתה לידע ולהבין בדבר זה שאני אומר. כבר בארנו בפרק שני מהלכות יסודי התורה שהקדוש ברוך הוא אינו יודע מדעה שהיא חוץ ממנו כבני אדם שהם ודעתם שנים. אלא הוא יתעלה שמו ודעתו אחד ואין דעתו של אדם יכולה להשיג דבר זה על בריו. וכשם שאין כח באדם להשיג ולמצא אמתת הבורא שנאמר (שמות לג:כ) כִּי לֹא יִרְאַנִי הָאָדָם וָחָי כך אין כח באדם להשיג ולמצא דעתו של הבורא. הוא שהנביא אמר (ישעיה נה:ח) כִּי לֹא מַחְשְׁבוֹתַי מַחְשְׁבוֹתֵיכֶם. --משנה תורה, הלכות תשובה ה:ה So when we use the terms חכמה,‎ בינה and דעת about ה׳, it is a metaphor. אמת for ה׳ is very different from אמת for human beings, but they are related. {:he} >ועוד יש לך לדעת, אף על פי שהאדם עושה משפט אמת וישר אין המשפט הוא מדת האדם, כי אי אפשר שלא יהיה האדם משקר במשפט בשגגה, ולפיכך אין מדת המשפט מדת האדם, ולכך אין לומר במדת המשפט שהאדם הולך אחר הקב"ה, רק כאשר הוא בעל חסד ועושה חסד שלא במשפט, והאדם מדה זאת אפשר לו לעשות והיא שייכת לו, ודבר זה יתבאר לקמן אצל (תהלים פה:יא) חֶסֶד וֶאֱמֶת נִפְגָּשׁוּ, כי גמילות חסד בפרט הוא מדת האדם והוא שייך לאדם לא מדת המשפט ולא שאר המדות רק מדה זאת, ולפיכך במדה זאת שהיא מיוחדת לאדם יאמר בזה שהולך אחר הקב"ה והמדה הזאת מתייחס אל השם יתברך עצמו גם כן. --מהר״ל, נתיבות עולם, נתיב גמילות חסדים א {:he} >חסד אומר יברא, שהוא גומל חסדים. ואמת אומר אל יברא, שכלו שקרים. --בראשית רבה ח:ה And the point of that relationship is through the Torah: {:he} >קודשא בריך הוא אסתכל באורייתא וברא עלמא; בר נש מסתכל בה באורייתא ומקיים עלמא. --זהר חלק ב, תרומה, קסא,ב Our {:la}/imitatio dei/ in חכמה is not to pretend to have god-like חכמה, but that we use our חכמה to create the universe, Robert Cover's normative world, the social world in which we live, to be מקיים עלמא. The midrash continues: {:he} >מה עשה הקדוש ברוך הוא? נטל אמת והשליכו לארץ, הדא הוא דכתיב (דניאל ח:יב): וְתַשְׁלֵךְ אֱמֶת אַרְצָה...תעלה אמת מן הארץ! הדא הוא דכתיב (תהלים פה:יב): אֱמֶת מֵאֶרֶץ תִּצְמָח. --בראשית רבה ח:ה So the word אמת means something different from the divine אמת, and so there is a different meaning for the intelligence to understand that אמת, but ה׳ gives us the gift to determine our אמת. Shlomo advises us to keep that in mind. {:he} ><b>כא</b> בני אל ילזו מעיניך; נצר תשיה ומזמה׃<br/> <b>כב</b> ויהיו חיים לנפשך; וחן לגרגרתיך׃<br/> <b>כג</b> אז תלך לבטח דרכך; ורגלך לא תגוף׃<br/> <b>כד</b> אם תשכב לא תפחד; ושכבת וערבה שנתך׃<br/> <b>כה</b> אל תירא מפחד פתאם; ומשאת רשעים כי תבא׃<br/> <b>כו</b> כי ה׳ יהיה בכסלך; ושמר רגלך מלכד׃ --משלי פרק ג We defined תשיה in <//The Widening Gyre> as Torah considered as the source of reality: {:he} ><em>תושיה</em>: התורה נקראת תושיה, מלשון יש. --מצודת ציון, משלי ב:ז So when Shlomo advises us אז תלך לבטח דרכך when we keep ה׳'s creation in mind, it could be a reference to the way that contemplating the vastness of creation inspires our awe. {:he} >והיאך היא הדרך לאהבתו ויראתו? בשעה שיתבונן האדם במעשיו וברואיו הנפלאים הגדולים ויראה מהן חכמתו שאין לה ערך ולא קץ מיד הוא אוהב ומשבח ומפאר ומתאוה תאוה גדולה לידע השם הגדול. כמו שאמר דוד (תהילים מב:ג) צָמְאָה נַפְשִׁי לֵאלֹקִים לְאֵ־ל חָי. וכשמחשב בדברים האלו עצמן מיד הוא נרתע לאחוריו ויפחד ויודע שהוא בריה קטנה שפלה אפלה עומדת בדעת קלה מעוטה לפני תמים דעות. כמו שאמר דוד (תהילים ח:ד) כִּי אֶרְאֶה שָׁמֶיךָ מַעֲשֵׂי אֶצְבְּעֹתֶיךָ...(תהילים ח:ה) מָה אֱנוֹשׁ כִּי תִזְכְּרֶנּוּ. ולפי הדברים האלו אני מבאר כללים גדולים ממעשה רבון העולמים כדי שיהיו פתח למבין לאהב את השם. כמו שאמרו חכמים בענין אהבה שמתוך כך אתה מכיר את מי שאמר והיה העולם. --משנה תורה, הלכות יסודי התורה ב:ב And ספר משלי emphasizes the importance of יראת ה׳ to ethics (משלי א:ז):‎ יראת ה׳ ראשית דעת. But I think that here Shlomo means something different. נצר תשיה ומזמה: Keep in mind ה׳'s חכמה,‎ בינה and דעת in the creation of the world. Use that as your מזמה, maintain your mindfulness, and that will guide you how to act: do the things that preserve the world that ה׳ created. Have the faith that that רשעים will be punished, destroyed in the end. {:he .lines} ><b>ז</b> איש בער לא ידע; וכסיל לא יבין את זאת׃ <b>ח</b> בפרח רשעים כמו עשב ויציצו כל פעלי און; להשמדם עדי עד׃ --תהילים פרק צב But you, who are acting in good faith, can be reassured. ה׳ יהיה בכסלך; ושמר רגלך מלכד, even in our foolishness. You are not going to get everything right; you are only human. In משלי,‎ כסיל is a particular kind of fool: one with the self-assurance to not need to think any more. We all are like that, so we need to keep ה׳'s omniscience in mind, and then we will remember that we have primitive monkey brains, and that will שמר רגלך מלכד. ---- Now Shlomo tells us what the fundamental heuristic is. Mishlei's mussar message number five: Tit for tat. {:he} ><b>כז</b> אל תמנע טוב מבעליו בהיות לאל ידך לעשות׃<br/> <b>כח</b> אל תאמר לרעך לך ושוב ומחר אתן; ויש אתך׃<br/> <b>כט</b> אל תחרש על רעך רעה; והוא יושב לבטח אתך׃<br/> <b>ל</b> אל תריב עם אדם חנם אם לא גמלך רעה׃ --משלי פרק ג The advice is not אל תריב עם אדם ever; that is a recipe for inviting abuse. אל תריב עם אדם חנם אם לא גמלך רעה means that being nice has to be your default, but be prepared to punish wrongdoers. {:he .lines} ><b>כו</b> עם חסיד תתחסד; עם גבר תמים תתמם׃ <b>כז</b> עם נבר תתברר; ועם עקש תתפתל׃ --תהילים פרק יח That's not just a moral decision, but it can be demonstrated that it is the best strategy for the long-term survival of society. That will take some exposition. Life isn't a zero-sum game. Ideally, we can both win. Or, we could both lose. Unfortunately, if I help you and you take advantage of me without helping in return, I end up losing. So both of us, trying to do the best we can, refuse to cooperate and so we both lose. This is called "The Prisoner's Dilemma", which is the basis for computer simulations of competition. >The Prisoner's Dilemma game was first proposed by Merrill Flood in 1951. It was formalized and defined by Albert W. Tucker. The name refers to the following hypothetical situation: > Two criminals are captured by the police. The police suspect that they are responsible for a murder, but do not have enough evidence to prove it in court, though they are able to convict them of a lesser charge (carrying a concealed weapon, for example). The prisoners are put in separate cells with no way to communicate with one another and each is offered to confess. > If neither prisoner confesses, both will be convicted of the lesser offense and sentenced to a year in prison. If both confess to murder, both will be sentenced to 5 years. If, however, one prisoner confesses while the other does not, then the prisoner who confessed will be granted immunity while the prisoner who did not confess will go to jail for 20 years. > What should each prisoner do? --Eric Roberts, [_The Prisoner's Dilemma_](https://cs.stanford.edu/people/eroberts/courses/soco/projects/1998-99/game-theory/prisoner.html) If the prisoners could communicate, the best strategy is to not confess (call that "cooperation"). But each prisoner thinks, "If I don't confess, and the other guy does, I go to jail for 20 years. If I do confess, and he does, that goes down to 5 years." His logic leads him to confess (call that "defecting", doing something that hurts the other). So both end up doing the worst thing for themselves. What I do now will influence what everyone else does to me later. The extended prisoner's dilemma is a better model for society, and there *is* a winning strategy for that: cooperate unless the other side betrays. >In 1980, Robert Axelrod, professor of political science at the University of Michigan, held a tournament of various strategies for the prisoner's dilemma. He invited a number of well-known game theorists to submit strategies to be run by computers. In the tournament, programs played games against each other and themselves repeatedly. Each strategy specified whether to cooperate or defect based on the previous moves of both the strategy and its opponent. > ...The winner of Axelrod's tournament was the TIT FOR TAT strategy. So why cooperate? In _The Evolution of Cooperation_, political scientist Robert Axelrod seeks to answer this question. In 1980, he organized the famed Computer Prisoners Dilemma Tournament, which sought to find the optimal strategy for survival in a particular game. Over and over, the simplest strategy, a cooperative program called Tit for Tat, shut out the competition. In other words, cooperation, not unfettered competition, turns out to be our best chance for survival. --Amazon summary of Robert Axelrod, [_The Evolution of Cooperation_](https://www.amazon.com/Evolution-Cooperation-Revised-Robert-Axelrod/dp/0465005640/) Which all adds up to a nice way of saying that, in the world that ה׳ created, including the rules of mathematics, אל תחרש על רעך רעה; והוא יושב לבטח אתך is not just the law; it's a good idea. ---- Shlomo ends the perek with the reassurance that nice guys don't finish last. {:he} ><b>לא</b> אל תקנא באיש חמס; ואל תבחר בכל דרכיו׃<br/> <b>לב</b> כי תועבת ה׳ נלוז; ואת ישרים סודו׃<br/> <b>לג</b> מארת ה׳ בבית רשע; ונוה צדיקים יברך׃<br/> <b>לד</b> אם ללצים הוא יליץ; ולענוים יתן חן׃<br/> <b>לה</b> כבוד חכמים ינחלו; וכסילים מרים קלון׃ --משלי פרק ג The reward for the חכמים is כבוד, which is a little odd, because we usually think of כבוד as a bad thing. {:he} >רבי אלעזר הקפר אומר: הקנאה והתאוה והכבוד, מוציאין את האדם מן העולם. --משנה אבות ד:כא We have a יצר הרע for כבוד. The Maharal, explaining why הקנאה והתאוה והכבוד destroy a person's world, says each of these relate to an aspect of our selves: {:he} >--דרך חיים ד:כא דע לך כי האדם שהוא בעל חי, יש לו נפש. והנפש הזאת יש לה כחות מחולקות...וכתב הרמב"ם ז"ל בהקדמת מסכתא הזאת ששם ראש הרופאים התחלת ספרו שהנפשות שלש; טבעית, חיונית, נפשית... There are many names for this tripartite "life force": צומח-חי-מדבר or נפש-רוח-נשמה; for Plato, epithymetikon (appetite)-thymoeides (emotion)-logistikon (reasoning). {:he} >--דרך חיים ד:כא ובאר ענין ג' כחות אלו; כח טבעי, הוא הכח שמקבל ההזנה שהאדם ניזון...ומכח זה בא התאוה... > הכח השני הוא כח החיוני, שממנו החיות, ועל ידי כח זה האדם הוא מתנועע ממקום למקום, וממנו מתחדש...הקנאה... > והכבוד הוא לכח השכלי...כי הכבוד הוא דבר רוחני, ואינו דבר גשמי, ולכך הכבוד ראוי אל השכלי. All the different aspects of what we call יצר הרע come from different aspects of our selves. כבוד is the יצר הרע that comes from our intelligence, specifically our ability to talk, to communicate, to relate to others. It's often translated as "honor" but it's about how we fit into society, what in modern parlance is called "status". They developed unhealthy bodies and high levels of atherosclerotic plaque. And the researchers found...that the baboons were all equally unhealthy, but it was the baboons towards the bottom of the hierarchy that were more likely to fall ill as a result of their bad diets. And then, crucially, the researchers conspired to rearrange the hierarchy of the baboon troop, and they found that the health outcomes changed in lockstep with the rearrangement of the hierarchy. The new top baboons were suddenly healthier and had better outcomes than boons beneath them. > So status sinks down to our physical health and our happiness. One of the major studies that I quote in the book looked at 60,000 people across 123 countries, and they found that people’s well-being consistently depended upon the degree to which they felt respected by other people. That’s status, and it was the strongest predictor of long-term positive or negative feelings. Status is more important to people’s happiness than family or money. And they found this across gender, culture, age, personality. The truth is that יצר הרע shouldn't be considered not “evil” per se; it represents the urges of a person to meet their own needs as opposed to a higher purpose. But (משנה אבות א:יד)‎ אם אין אני לי, מי לי? I do have to pay attention to my own survival and flourishing. {:he} >(בראשית א:לא) וְהִנֵּה טוֹב מְאֹד, זה יצר רע. וכי יצר הרע טוב מאד, אתמהא? אלא שאלולי יצר הרע לא בנה אדם בית, ולא נשא אשה, ולא הוליד, ולא נשא ונתן. --בראשית רבה ט:ז We have examples of how critical the יצר הרע is, in the gemara that talks about the end of prophecy: {:he} >(נחמיה ט:ד) וַיִּצְעֲקוּ אֶל ה׳ אֱלֹקִים בְּקוֹל גָּדוֹל. מאי אמור? אמר רב, ואיתימא רבי יוחנן: בייא בייא! היינו האי דאחרביה למקדשא וקליה להיכליה וקטלינהו לכולהו צדיקי ואגלינהו לישראל מארעהון, ועדיין מרקד בינן. כלום יהבתיה לן אלא לקבולי ביה אגרא? לא איהו בעינן, ולא אגריה בעינן! > נפל להו פיתקא מרקיעא, דהוה כתב בה ”אמת“. אמר רב חנינא: שמע מינה חותמו של הקדוש ברוך הוא ״אמת״. > אותיבו בתעניתא תלתא יומין ותלתא לילואתא, מסרוהו ניהליהו. נפק אתא כי גוריא דנורא מבית קדשי הקדשים, אמר להו נביא לישראל: היינו יצרא דעבודה זרה, שנאמר (זכריה ה:ח): וַיֹּאמֶר זֹאת הָרִשְׁעָה...וַיַּשְׁלֵךְ אֹתָהּ אֶל תּוֹךְ הָאֵיפָה וַיַּשְׁלֵךְ אֶת אֶבֶן הָעוֹפֶרֶת אֶל־פִּיהָ. > אמרו: הואיל ועת רצון הוא, נבעי רחמי איצרא דעבירה. בעו רחמי ואמסר בידייהו. אמר להו: חזו, דאי קטליתו ליה לההוא, כלי עלמא. חבשוהו תלתא יומי, ובעו ביעתא בת יומא בכל ארץ ישראל ולא אשתכח. --יומא סט,ב {:he} >סדר עולם פרק ל:ב: עד כאן היו הנביאים. פירוש: משהרגו את היצר הרע בטלה הנבואה; עכ"ל הגר"א. וזהו יצרא דעבודה זרה כמבואר ביומא. > ולדעתי כוונתו אל דברי הפסוק זכריה (יג:ב) וְהָיָה בַיּוֹם הַהוּא נְאֻם ה׳ צְבָאוֹ־ת אַכְרִית אֶת שְׁמוֹת הָעֲצַבִּים מִן הָאָרֶץ וְלֹא יִזָּכְרוּ עוֹד; וְגַם אֶת הַנְּבִיאִים וְאֶת רוּחַ הַטֻּמְאָה אַעֲבִיר מִן הָאָרֶץ...ועל זה כיון הגר"א, ודו"ק, כי לזה כוונת הפסוק על נבואת אמת...וזה ענין רחב צריך ביאור במושכל, ואכמ"ל. --משך חכמה, במדבר יא:יז {:he} >…ראו אנשי כנסת הגדולה צורך להשתדל בכל כחותיהם הרוחניים לבטל מישראל את יצר הרע של עבודה זרה, שבו ראו סיבת החורבן. והיו מוכנים לוותר תמורת זה על השכר הגדול הכרוך במציאות יצר הזה וכיבושו. ומצינו בדברי ר׳ צדוק הכהן זצ״ל, שכל עוד שהיה קיים יצה״ר של עבודה זרה, היתה כנגדו הנבואה והיו נסים גלויים בישראל. --מכתב מאליהו, כרך שלישי, השגות הסתר וגלוי, עמ׳ 277 In other words, it is the יצר הרע for עבודה זרה that makes נבואה possible. The אנשי כנסת הגדולה decided לא איהו בעינן, ולא אגריה בעינן, and we lost an important part of our world. It is the יצר הרע for תאוה that makes reproduction possible. And just like we need the יצר הרע for תאוה, we need the יצר הרע for כבוד. It's what makes us want to interact with others; those without that יצר הרע are called sociopaths. >Humans are social creatures. > We crave money and power. We pursue physical safety and physical pleasures. We have ideals for which some of us have, on occasion, proven willing to die. But one of the most fundamental drives we have—one that, in many circumstances, trumps all these others—is the need for social connection and social approval. > The reasons for this go deep. For much of our history as a species, individuals who were cast out from their group were far more likely to die. Even today, many people find social humiliation as hard to bear as physical pain. Solitary confinement is, for good reason, considered a form of torture. Just like שאלולי יצר הרע [לתאוה]...לא נשא [אדם] אשה, ולא הוליד, and אלולי יצר הרע [לקנאה] לא בנה אדם בית...ולא נשא ונתן, so too the יצר הרע לכבוד is what allows the structure of an organized society to flourish, to avoid Hobbes's "life in the state of nature..nasty, brutish and short". The key is to realize that you can't (or at least shouldn't) achieve status by dominating others; you have to be the sort of person that others grant status to, and כבוד חכמים ינחלו.
