פרק ד ends with a return to the parent-lecturing-child metaphor. He is talking about the speech of *others*. Rabbi Goldson has a nice metaphor for this metaphor (a meta-metaphor?): >In 2009, a German scientist named Jan Souman took a group of subjects out to empty parking lots and open fields, blindfolded them, and instructed them to walk in a straight line. Some of them managed to keep to a straight course for ten or twenty paces; a few lasted 50 or a hundred. But in the end, all of them wound up circling back toward their points of origin. Not many of them. Not most of them. Every last one. > "And they have no idea", Dr. Souman told NPR. " They were thinking that they were walking in a straight line all the time"... > So how do we hold true to our course? Dr. Souman explained what might otherwise seem obvious, a simple solution to the circular inclinations of the human compass. And that explains a strange ברכה: {:he} >ברוך אתה ה׳ אלקינו מלך העולם המעביר שנה מעיני ותנומה מעפעפי. > ויהי רצון מלפניך ה׳ אלקינו ואלקי אבותינו שתרגילנו בתורתך ודבקנו במצותיך, ואל תביאנו לא לידי חטא ולא לידי עברה ועון ולא לידי נסיון...ברוך אתה ה׳ גומל חסדים טובים לעמו ישראל. --ברכות השחר Each part of that bracha is fine; we thank ה׳ for allowing us to wake, and we pray to be able to go in the path of the Torah, but why combine them into one ברכה? And this is a single ברכה: {:he} >כי משי אפיה לימא ברוך המעביר חבלי שינה מעיני ותנומה מעפעפי ויהי רצון מלפניך ה' אלקי שתרגילני בתורתך ודבקני במצותיך... --ברכות ס,ב {:he} >ואומר רבינו תם שהיא מן הברכה ברוך אתה ה' המעביר שינה מעיני וכו' וצריך לומר ויהי רצון. ואם תאמר והלא כל הברכות כולן צריך לומר בחתימתן מעין פתיחתן והא ליכא; וי"ל דשפיר הוי מעין פתיחה סמוך לחתימה מהמעביר דסמוך לחתימה איכא ותגמלני חסדים טובים והיינו גמילות חסדים שהקב"ה מעביר שינה מן האדם ומחדש כחו. --תוספות, ברכות מו,א The answer is that מעביר שנה מעיני is not about literally waking up; that's the previous ברכה of הנותן ליעף כח. This one uses Shlomo's metaphor: Thank you for allowing me to open my eyes and focus on what's important, which is תרגילנו בתורתך ודבקנו במצותיך. ---- The start of פרק ה has the same message, of being wary of smooth talkers, but uses the other metaphor, of the אשה זרה. {:he} ><b>א</b> בני לחכמתי הקשיבה; לתבונתי הט אזנך׃<br/> <b>ב</b> לשמר מזמות; ודעת שפתיך ינצרו׃<br/> <b>ג</b> כי נפת תטפנה שפתי זרה; וחלק משמן חכה׃<br/> <b>ד</b> ואחריתה מרה כלענה; חדה כחרב פיות׃<br/> <b>ה</b> רגליה ירדות מות; שאול צעדיה יתמכו׃<br/> <b>ו</b> ארח חיים פן תפלס; נעו מעגלתיה לא תדע׃ --משלי פרק ה You need לשמר מזמות: to maintain your mindfulness (what doctors call a "high index of suspicion") about what you hear outside the walls of the yeshiva. The זרה is the opposite of the חכם of the previous perek: פלס מעגל רגלך; וכל דרכיך יכנו. She avoid weighing her path and therefore wanders without thinking. {:he} ><em>מאשה זרה</em>: מכנסיה של אפיקורסות והיא המינות. --רש"י, משלי ב:טז Dr. Lisa Fredman (who has a Ph.D. in Rashi) makes an interesting point about Rashi's use of the word מינות--heresy. She spoke at the 2013 ימי עיון בתנ״ך about [_Rashi Encounters the Christian World in his Commentary to Mishlei_](https://etzion.org.il/en/tanakh/ketuvim/sefer-mishlei/rashi-encounters-christian-world-his-commentary-mishlei). Rashi seems very concerned about Christian proselyting. Too many people are naïve, פתים. We pointed out in <//Middle of the Road> that אמונה פשוטה is not necessarily a bad thing, but we need (משלי א:ד)‎ לתת לפתאים ערמה; they need some sophistication, some cynicism. {:he} ><em>פתים</em>: המתפתים ע"י מסיתים ומינים. --רש"י, משלי א:כב There is an old joke: >Three Jews who had recently converted to Christianity were having a drink together in a posh restaurant. They started talking about the reasons for their conversions. > “I converted out of love,” said the first. “Not for Christianity, but for a Christian girl. As you both know, my wife insisted that I convert.” > “And I,” said the second, “I converted in order to rise in the legal system. You probably know that my recent appointment as a federal judge may have had something to do with my new religion.” > The third man spoke up: “I converted because I think that the teachings of Christianity are superior to those of Judaism.” > “Are you kidding?” said the first man, spitting out his drink. “What do you take us for, a couple of goyim?” --My Jewish Learning, [_Jewish Jokes_](https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/jewish-jokes/) But it's not true. Christian polemics can be very convincing. One famous example was the chief rabbi of Rome from 1940 to 1945, who converted to Catholicism. >In his autobiography, _Before the Dawn: Autobiographical Reflections by Eugenio Zolli, Former Chief Rabbi of Rome_, Zolli said that while presiding over the religious service in the synagogue on the holy day of Yom Kippur in 1944, he experienced a vision of Jesus. Within his heart, he says, he found the words "You are here for the last time"... > After his conversion, Zolli was asked in an interview why he had "given up the Synagogue for the Church." Zolli responded saying, "But I have not given it up. Christianity is the completion or crown of the Synagogue. For, the Synagogue was a promise, and Christianity is the fulfillment of that promise. The Synagogue pointed to Christianity: Christianity presupposes the Synagogue. So you see, one cannot exist without the other. What I converted to was the living Christianity." --Wikipedia, [_Israel Zolli_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel_Zolli#Conversion_to_Catholicism) And of course, the danger of learning from other religions was a trap that Shlomo himself fell into: {:he} ><b>א</b> והמלך שלמה אהב נשים נכריות רבות ואת בת פרעה; מואביות עמניות אדמית צדנית חתית׃ <b>ב</b> מן הגוים אשר אמר ה׳ אל בני ישראל לא תבאו בהם והם לא יבאו בכם אכן יטו את לבבכם אחרי אלהיהם בהם דבק שלמה לאהבה׃ <b>ג</b> ויהי לו נשים שרות שבע מאות ופלגשים שלש מאות; ויטו נשיו את לבו׃ <b>ד</b> ויהי לעת זקנת שלמה נשיו הטו את לבבו אחרי אלהים אחרים; ולא היה לבבו שלם עם ה׳ אלקיו כלבב דויד אביו׃ <b>ה</b> וילך שלמה אחרי עשתרת אלהי צדנים; ואחרי מלכם שקץ עמנים׃ <b>ו</b> ויעש שלמה הרע בעיני ה׳; ולא מלא אחרי ה׳ כדוד אביו׃ --מלכים א פרק יא While the seduction of his wives certainly played a part in his failure, לא מלא אחרי ה׳, I have to believe that "the wisest of all men" thought about all the religious implications of עבודה זרה and convinced himself that pantheism isn't incompatible with Torah. The metaphor of the נפת תטפנה שפתי זרה merged with the literal meaning of אהב נשים נכריות רבות. But we can't just reject the אשה זרה. Her words are חדה כחרב פיות, a double-edged sword. It is an important tool but too easily can cut its wielder. The חסידים hold that double-edged sword: {:he .lines} ><b>ה</b> יעלזו חסידים בכבוד; ירננו על משכבותם׃ <b>ו</b> רוממות א־ל בגרונם; וחרב פיפיות בידם׃ --תהילים פרק קמט We have to acknowledge that other cultures may have things to teach us. {:he} >אם יאמר לך אדם יש חכמה בגוים תאמן...יש תורה בגוים אל תאמן. --איכה רבה ב:יג There are opinions that those things may be too dangerous to handle. {:he} >--רא"ש כלל נה סימן ט כי חכמת הפילוסופיא וחכמת התורה והמשפטים אינן על דרך אחת. כי חכמת התורה היא קבלה למשה מסיני, והחכם ידרוש בה במדות שנתנה לידרש בהם, ומדמה מילתא למילתא; אף על פי שאין הדברים נמשכים אחר חכמת הטבע, אנו הולכין על פי הקבלה. אבל חכמת הפילוסופיא היא טבעית, וחכמים גדולים היו והעמידו כל דבר על טבעו, ומרוב חכמתם העמיקו שחתו והוצרכו לכפור בתורת משה, לפי שאין כל התורה טבעית, אלא קבלה. ועל זה נאמר (דברים יח:יג): תָּמִים תִּהְיֶה עִם ה׳ וגו׳; כלומר: אפילו יצא לך הדבר חוץ מן הטבע, אל תהרהר על הקבלה, אלא בתמימות התהלך לפניו. > לכן אין להביא ראיה מדבריהם, לעשות אות ומופת וגזרות ומשלים על משפטי ה' הישרים. ועל זה אמר החכם (משלי ב:יט): כָּל בָּאֶיהָ לֹא יְשׁוּבוּן, רוצה לומר: כל הבא ונכנס מתחלה בחכמה זו, לא יוכל לצאת ממנה להכנס בלבו חכמת התורה, כי לא יוכל לשוב מחכמה טבעית שהורגל בה, כי לבו תמיד נמשך אחריה. ומחמת זה לא ישיג לעמוד על חכמת התורה, שהיא ארחות חיים, כי יהיה לבו תמיד על חכמת הטבע, ותעלה ברוחו להשוות שתי החכמות יחד, ולהביא ראיה מזו לזו, ומתוך זה יעות המשפט; כי שני הפכים הם, צרות זו לזו, ולא ישכנו במקום אחד. And Rav Soloveitchik was famously opposed to any religious discussions with other faiths. >In the secular sphere, we may discuss positions to be taken, ideas to be evolved, and plans to be formulated. In these matters, religious communities may together recommend action to be developed...However, our joint engagement in this kind of enterprise must not dull our sense of identity as a faith community...[I]f the debate should revolve around matters of faith, then one of the confronters will be impelled to avail himself of the language of his opponent. This itself would mean surrender of individuality and distinctiveness. -- Rabbi Joseph B. Yes. Be careful. חז״ל talk about translating the Torah into Greek, the language of פילוסופי יוון שהיו חוקרים מדעתם ומשכלם. {:he} >מעשה בה׳ זקנים שכתבו לתלמי המלך את התורה יונית והיה היום קשה לישראל כיום שנעשה העגל שלא היתה התורה יכולה להתרגם כל צרכה. --מסכת סופרים א:ז {:he} >בח' בטבת נכתבה התורה יונית בימי תלמי המלך והחושך בא לעולם שלשת ימים... בי' בו סמך מלך בבל את ידו על ירושלים להחריבה. --מגילת תענית, אדר כ The Lubavitch Rebbe asks, why was putting the Torah into Greek terms likened to "the day the Golden Calf was made"? {:he} >התמיהה העקרית היא בכך שבברייתא המובא לעיל ממסכת סופרים נאמר ”היה היום קשה לישראל כיום שנעשה העגל“; כיצד ייתכן לומר, שמשום שהתורה אינה יכולה להיות מתורגמת ”כל צרכה“, הרי זה דבר קשה ושלילי כל כך, עד שהוא דומה ליום עשיית העגל?... > בפשטות היה יום העבודה לעגל *למחרת* יום עשיית העגל... > והמשמעות של ”קשה כיום שנעשה העגל“ היא: הקושי אינו כל כך בעתם עשיית העגל...אלא, הקושי הוא בכך שזהו ”*יום* שנעשה בו העגל“...יום של הכנה לחטא... > כך גם היום שבו תורגמה שתורה ליונית הוא יום קשה לישראל, כי הוא עלול להביא לידי הבנת התורה שלא כראוי, ולהיפך הכוונה האמיתית... --לקוטי שיחות כד, דברים א Making the עגל wasn't automatically a problem. It could have been re-purposed into a symbol of the מרכבה that carries the שכינה‎ (ואכמ״ל). But it was a very dangerous day that had the potential to (and in the end, did) end very badly. Learning חכמה בגוים is just as risky. We do it, because our intellectual curiosity pushes us to learn every thing, but we need to be aware of the risks.
