<blockquote lang=he><p><b>נז</b> חלקי ה׳ אמרתי לשמר דבריך׃<br/> <b>נח</b> חליתי פניך בכל לב; חנני כאמרתך׃<br/> <b>נט</b> חשבתי דרכי; ואשיבה רגלי אל עדתיך׃<br/> <b>ס</b> חשתי ולא התמהמהתי לשמר מצותיך׃<br/> <b>סא</b> חבלי רשעים עודני; תורתך לא שכחתי׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק קיט</footer></blockquote> ###חשתי ולא התמהמהתי The language of חַשְׁתִּי וְלֹא הִתְמַהְמָהְתִּי is familiar to us from later נביאים: <blockquote lang=he><p>הַקָּטֹן יִהְיֶה לָאֶלֶף וְהַצָּעִיר לְגוֹי עָצוּם; אֲנִי ה׳ בְּעִתָּהּ אֲחִישֶׁנָּה׃</p> <footer class=source>ישעיהו ס:כב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>כִּי עוֹד חָזוֹן לַמּוֹעֵד וְיָפֵחַ לַקֵּץ וְלֹא יְכַזֵּב; אִם יִתְמַהְמָהּ חַכֵּה לוֹ כִּי בֹא יָבֹא לֹא יְאַחֵר׃</p> <footer class=source>חבקוק ב:ג</footer></blockquote> But they use the words to describe <em>G-d</em>'s actions. They are used in a more negative sense; it is not our place to judge how ה׳ fulfils His word, whether בְּעִתָּהּ or אֲחִישֶׁנָּה, even אִם יִתְמַהְמָהּ as we quote in the אני מאמין. The contrast is with David's words: it's our job to be חַשׁ וְלֹא הִתְמַהְמָה לִשְׁמֹר מִצְוֺתֶיךָ. Trying to second-guess G-d is not only impossible, it's wrong: <blockquote lang=he><p> ולעולם לא יתעסק אדם בדברי ההגדות, ולא יאריך בדברי מדרשות האמורים בעניינים אלו וכיוצא בהן; ולא ישימם עיקר--שאינן מביאין לא לידי אהבה, ולא לידי יראה. וכן לא יחשב הקיצין; אמרו חכמים, תפוח דעתן של מחשבי קיצין. אלא יחכה ויאמין בכלל הדבר, כמו שביארנו.</p> <footer class=source>משנה תורה, הלכות מלכים ומלחמות יב:ה</footer></blockquote> So David emphasizes, תורתך לא שכחתי no matter how stressed or lost I feel. ###חצות לילה אקום <blockquote lang=he><p><b>סב</b> חצות לילה אקום להודות לך; על משפטי צדקך׃<br/> <b>סג</b> חבר אני לכל אשר יראוך; ולשמרי פקודיך׃<br/> <b>סד</b> חסדך ה׳ מלאה הארץ; חקיך למדני׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק קיט</footer></blockquote> Waking at midnight is the narrative center of this stich. One could read this as פשט: <blockquote lang=he><p>רבי פנחס בשם רבי אליעזר בן יעקב: כנור ונבל היו נתונים מראשותיו של דוד, וכיון שהיה מגיע בחצות לילה היה עומד ומנגן בהם.</p> <footer class=source>רות רבה ו:א</footer></blockquote> But we know the Aggadic understanding: <blockquote lang=he><p>ודוד בפלגא דליליא הוה קאי...אמר רב אושעיא אמר רבי אחא הכי קאמר [דוד] מעולם לא עבר עלי חצות לילה בשינה. רבי זירא אמר עד חצות לילה היה מתנמנם כסוס מכאן ואילך היה מתגבר כארי. רב אשי אמר עד חצות לילה היה עוסק בדברי תורה מכאן ואילך בשירות ותשבחות...ודוד מי הוה ידע פלגא דליליא? אימת השתא משה רבינו לא הוה ידע דכתיב (שמות יא) <em>כ</em>חצות הלילה אני יוצא בתוך מצרים...אלמא מספקא ליה! ודוד הוה ידע? דוד סימנא הוה ליה, דאמר רב אחא בר ביזנא א״ר שמעון חסידא כנור היה תלוי למעלה ממטתו של דוד וכיון שהגיע חצות לילה בא רוח צפונית ונושבת בו ומנגן מאליו מיד היה עומד ועוסק בתורה עד שעלה עמוד השחר. כיון שעלה עמוד השחר נכנסו חכמי ישראל אצלו...</p> <footer class=source>ברכות ג,ב</footer></blockquote> Now, the wind-driven harp is a real thing: <blockquote lang=en><p>An Aeolian harp (also wind harp) is a musical instrument that is played by the wind. Named for Aeolus, the ancient Greek god of the wind, the traditional Aeolian harp is essentially a wooden box including a sounding board, with strings stretched lengthwise across two bridges. It is often placed in a slightly opened window where the wind can blow across the strings to produce sounds. </p> <footer class=source>Wikipedia, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeolian_harp"><cite>Aeolian harp</cite></a></footer></blockquote> <a href="https://parksandrecwarrensburgmo.wordpress.com/tag/blind-boone-park/"><img src=/images/blind-boone-park4.jpg alt="Boone Park Aeolian Harp" /></a> The St. Louis Science Center had an Aeolian Harp as part of the outdoor hands-on exhibit outside the planetarium, but when they remodeled in 1991, it was moved to <a href="http://www.blindboonepark.org/">Blind Boone Park</a> in Warrensburg. So it is entirely possible that David had a wind harp that awoke him at midnight to sing על משפטי צדקך. But I'd like to look at the Aggadic side of the story. What is the North wind that blows at midnight, that blew for David but not for Moshe? <blockquote lang=he><p>ובמדבר מאי טעמא לא מהול איבעית אימא משום חולשא דאורחא ואיבעית אימא משום דלא נשיב להו רוח צפונית, דתניא כל אותן ארבעים שנה שהיו ישראל במדבר לא נשבה להם רוח צפונית. מאי טעמא? איבעית אימא משום דנזופים הוו, ואי בעית אימא דלא נבדור ענני כבוד...ת״ר כל אותן ארבעים שנה שהיו ישראל במדבר לא היה יום שלא נשבה בו רוח צפונית בחצי הלילה.</p> <footer class=source>יבמות עא,ב-עב,א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>דלא ניבדור ענני כבוד</em>: דרוח צפונית מפזרת העננים ולא משום דתקיפא טפי מאחריני אלא נוחה וטובה לנחבלים ומוכים ולפיכך העת יפה והעננים מתפזרים והחמה זורחת.</p> <footer class=source>תוספות הרא״ש מסכת יבמות דף עב עמוד א </footer></blockquote> So David could use the north wind that blew at midnight, but Moshe could not, since it would have scattered the Clouds of Glory. What does that even mean? I've talked before about taking Aggadah <a href="/Home/search?q=seriously+but+not+literally">"seriously but not literally"</a> and I'd like to think about what it means. This is entirely my own approach; take it with a grain of salt. You could look at midnight in two different ways; it is the depth of the darkness of night: <blockquote lang=en><p><i lang=he>Seforno</i> interprets חצות לילה, midnight, as a metaphor for the depths of despair and sorrow.</p> <footer class=source>Artscroll Tehillim 119:62</footer></blockquote> On the other hand, it is the point when the darkness turns. Things only get lighter from there. For Moshe, the power of ה׳ is immediate and obvious. Midnight is when the Egyptians are killed: <blockquote lang=he><p>וַיְהִי בַּחֲצִי הַלַּיְלָה וַה׳ הִכָּה כָל בְּכוֹר בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם מִבְּכֹר פַּרְעֹה הַיֹּשֵׁב עַל כִּסְאוֹ עַד בְּכוֹר הַשְּׁבִי אֲשֶׁר בְּבֵית הַבּוֹר וְכֹל בְּכוֹר בְּהֵמָה׃</p> <footer class=source> שמות יב כט</footer></blockquote> The ענני הכבוד represent the presence of the שכינה, and בני ישראל feel that presence. They surrounded by miracles like the מן, and when they sin, they are immediately punished. We could say that Moshe sees a midnight of דין. He rejects a relationship with ה׳ that is indirect, that only comes through His messengers: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויאמר משה אל ה׳ ראה אתה אמר אלי העל את העם הזה ואתה לא הודעתני את אשר תשלח עמי; ואתה אמרת ידעתיך בשם וגם מצאת חן בעיני׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמות לג:יב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ראה אתה אומר אלי</em>:...ואתה לא הודעתני וגו׳, ואשר אמרת לי (שמות כג:כ) הִנֵּה אָנֹכִי שֹׁלֵחַ מַלְאָךְ לְפָנֶיךָ, אין זו הודעה, שאין אני חפץ בה.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם</footer></blockquote> But that's how the world works. The forces of nature are the מאלכים: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ד</b> עֹשֶׂה מַלְאָכָיו רוּחוֹת; מְשָׁרְתָיו אֵשׁ לֹהֵט׃<br/> <b>ה</b> יָסַד אֶרֶץ עַל מְכוֹנֶיהָ; בַּל תִּמּוֹט עוֹלָם וָעֶד׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק קד</footer></blockquote> So the winds are in fact incompatible with the ענני הגבוד. They represent two different ways of ה׳'s manifestation in the world. The north wind, in this reading, is a healing force, a symbol of רחמים. It blows at midnight, making it a time when things turn around: <blockquote lang=he><p>בחצות הלילה...נתעורר צד צפון ברוח...ואז שככו הדינים של קו שמאל ונמתק בחסדים...ולא עוד אלא שהקב״ה מושך עליו חוט של חסד.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.aspaklaria.info/008_HET/%D7%97%D7%A6%D7%95%D7%AA.htm">זוהר לך לך שסג, תרגום </a></footer></blockquote> This becomes in Chassidic thought the origin of תיקון חצות: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>חצות לילה אקום להודות לך על משפטי צדקך</em>: חצות הוא מסגל כמו פדיון, כי הוא המתקת הדינים (פתח אליהו) וזהו, על משפטי צדקך הינו שצדק גובר על משפט התקון לזה, חצות לילה אקום.</p> <footer class=source>ליקוטי מוהר״ן חלק א, קמט </footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>והנה תראה כי השלש תפלות אבות תיקנום, ומצד זה מוטל על כל ישראל לסדרן, ואולם תקון חצי הלילה האחרונה דוד נזדרז בו, וכמו שכתוב חצות לילה אקום להודות לך (תהלים קיט), והוא המשלים עם האבות תקונם של ישראל, אבל לא נקבע הענין להטילו על כל ישראל, כי אם על חסידיהם, להיותו במדרגה קצת למטה מהאבות.</p> <footer class=source>רמח״ל, דרך ה׳ חלק ד פרק ו:טז</footer></blockquote> And it is David who creates this תפילה, as he is the paragon of תשובה: <blockquote lang=he><p>היינו דרבי שמואל בר נחמני א״ר יונתן מאי דכתיב (שמואל ב כג:א) נְאֻם דָּוִד בֶּן יִשַׁי וּנְאֻם הַגֶּבֶר הֻקַם עָל? נאם דוד בן ישי שהקים עולה של תשובה.</p> <footer class=source>עבודה זרה ה,א</footer></blockquote> And so he can conclude: חסדך ה׳ מלאה הארץ. And seeing midnight as the transition from דין to רחמים helps understand another part of the gemara. In terms of the תלמוד תורה that is the theme of the entire perek, it symbolizes two ways of learning: the left brain, analytic and orderly, before חצות and the right brain, emotional and holistic, after. As רב אשי says, עד חצות לילה היה עוסק בדברי תורה מכאן ואילך בשירות ותשבחות. We could call it the distinction between הלכה and אגדה, and we will look at that more in the next section.
