We were dealing with David in his time in Ziklag, as a petty king under Philistine rule, and realized that he was supporting a large army at that point: (דברי הימים א יב:כג)‎ כי לעת יום ביום יבאו על דויד לעזרו עד למחנה גדול כמחנה אלקים. The question came up, how did they support themselves? The text explains: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ח</b> ויעל דוד ואנשיו ויפשטו אל הגשורי והגרזי (והגזרי) והעמלקי; כי הנה ישבות הארץ אשר מעולם בואך שורה ועד ארץ מצרים׃ <b>ט</b> והכה דוד את הארץ ולא יחיה איש ואשה; ולקח צאן ובקר וחמרים וגמלים ובגדים וישב ויבא אל אכיש׃ <b>י</b> ויאמר אכיש אל פשטתם היום; ויאמר דוד על נגב יהודה ועל נגב הירחמאלי ואל נגב הקיני׃ <b>יא</b> ואיש ואשה לא יחיה דוד להביא גת לאמר פן יגדו עלינו לאמר; כה עשה דוד וכה משפטו כל הימים אשר ישב בשדה פלשתים׃ <b>יב</b> ויאמן אכיש בדוד לאמר; הבאש הבאיש בעמו בישראל והיה לי לעבד עולם׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמואל א פרק כז</footer></blockquote> Now, while David claims to be raiding Southern Judah (ירחמאל is one of יהודה's descendents, and the קיני were the family of יתרו who settled in the נגב), where was he actually raiding? It was the territory of עמלק: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויך שאול את עמלק מחוילה בואך שור אשר על פני מצרים׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל א טו:ז</footer></blockquote> But they were nomadic raiders. The territory was actually that of ישמעאל (what my <a href="http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kingdoms_of_Israel_and_Judah_map_830.svg">Wikipedia map</a> calls "Arabu Tribes"): <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ו</b> ויאמר אברם אל שרי הנה שפחתך בידך עשי לה הטוב בעיניך; ותענה שרי ותברח מפניה׃ <b>ז</b> וימצאה מלאך ה׳ על עין המים במדבר; על העין בדרך שור׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק טז</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יב</b> ואלה תלדת ישמעאל בן אברהם; אשר ילדה הגר המצרית שפחת שרה לאברהם׃ ... <b>יח</b> וישכנו מחוילה עד שור אשר על פני מצרים באכה אשורה; על פני כל אחיו נפל׃ </p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק כה</footer></blockquote> It was the area between Egypt and Israel, the first place that בני ישראל came to after they left Egypt: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כב</b> ויסע משה את ישראל מים סוף ויצאו אל מדבר שור; וילכו שלשת ימים במדבר ולא מצאו מים׃ <b>כג</b> ויבאו מרתה ולא יכלו לשתת מים ממרה כי מרים הם; על כן קרא שמה מרה׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק טו</footer></blockquote> Note that the text describes them as ישבות הארץ אשר מעולם, since they were not part of the cycle of wars that engulfed the Middle East, living in the shadow of the power of Egypt. The Philistines fought east and north, the Israelites came from the south and east into the land (avoiding the straight route, דרך ארץ פלשתים), and the other nations were further away. But one of the nations, the גשורי, seems to live somewhere else: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יג</b> ויתר הגלעד וכל הבשן ממלכת עוג נתתי לחצי שבט המנשה; כל חבל הארגב לכל הבשן ההוא יקרא ארץ רפאים׃ <b>יד</b> יאיר בן מנשה לקח את כל חבל ארגב עד גבול הגשורי והמעכתי; ויקרא אתם על שמו את הבשן חות יאיר עד היום הזה׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים פרק ג</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויהושע זקן בא בימים; ויאמר ה׳ אליו אתה זקנתה באת בימים והארץ נשארה הרבה מאד לרשתה׃ <b>ב</b> זאת הארץ הנשארת; כל גלילות הפלשתים ו<em>כל הגשורי</em>׃ <b>ג</b> מן השיחור אשר על פני מצרים ועד גבול עקרון צפונה לכנעני תחשב; חמשת סרני פלשתים העזתי והאשדודי האשקלוני הגתי והעקרוני והעוים׃ ...<b>יא</b> והגלעד וגבול הגשורי והמעכתי וכל הר חרמון וכל הבשן עד סלכה׃ <b>יב</b> כל ממלכות עוג בבשן אשר מלך בעשתרות ובאדרעי; הוא נשאר מיתר הרפאים ויכם משה וירשם׃ <b>יג</b> ולא הורישו בני ישראל את הגשורי ואת המעכתי; <em>וישב גשור ומעכת בקרב ישראל עד היום הזה</em>׃ </p> <footer class=source>יהושוע פרק יג</footer></blockquote> However, it is hard to see how David could have been raiding that far north, if he is trying to avoid any entanglements with Saul and his army. It is possible that there are two different גשורים, but it will become clear when we deal with Avshalom and Tamar that David has had some conflict with the Northern גשורי. I am going to assume that they in fact were two territories of the same people. So David's incursions are against people who have never been at war with Israel, for whom these attacks are completely unexpected: <blockquote lang=he><p> פי׳ כי אותן משפחות שזכר היו יושבות באותה הארץ מקדם לבטח עד בואכה שורה ועד ארץ מצרים ולפיכך לא היו נשמרים כי לא היתה להם מלחמה עם אדם ודוד בא עליהם והכה הארץ ושלל שלל רב ולא היה נודע מי היה עושה להם זאת הרעה כי לא יחיה איש ואשה׃</p> <footer class=source>רד״ק שמואל א פרק כז:ח, ד״ה כי הנה יושבות הארץ אשר מעולם </footer></blockquote> ##Moral Boundaries and Moral Quandaries It's very clever of David to be fooling the Philistines, and not attacking his own countrymen, and I have no problem with David lying to Achish, who is a sworn enemy of Israel. But what are we to make of his despoiling and killing the הגשורי and הגרזי (I will grant him the moral right to attack עמלק). As the Malbim says: <blockquote lang=he><p>אם היו יושבי הארץ איך הכה בם, תחת טוב שלם רע? </p> <footer class=source>מלבי״ם שמואל א כז:ח</footer></blockquote> I named this shiur "Days of Ziklag" after the 1958 novel by S. Izhar. Yizhar Smilansky (who wrote under the pen name of ס. יצהר) was the first major native Israeli Hebrew writer; earlier Hebrew writers like Agnon and Bialik were Eastern European-born and moved to Palestine, and their writing reflects the sentiments of their ideological journey. Izhar was a Sabra, born in Rechovot in 1916, and his writing reflects the conflict between the first generation of settlers and the next generation who were born in the land, for whom Zionism wasn't a movement as much as a fact of their upbringing. His first stories published in the 1930's reflected this conflict in the Kibbutz movement and its socialism, but his later works including ימי צאלג dealt more with the morality of war and displacing the Arab population from Israel. ימי צאלג was published in 1958. It is a 1,134-page stream-of-consciousness novel about a company of Israeli soldiers in the Negev in the 1948 War of Independence. I haven't read it; I don't know if anyone has. <blockquote lang=en><p>...A. B. Yehoshua once confessed that he had never ploughed through the whole of <cite>The Days of Ziklag</cite>—although he had never stopped reading it either.</p> <footer class=source><a href=" http://www.jewishquarterly.org/issuearchive/article6e27.html?articleid=226">David Aberbach, <cite>S. Yizhar</cite></a></footer></blockquote> It deals with the internal lives of the soldiers including the brutality of the war and the destruction of Arab villages. It is named ימי צאלג because one of the characters becomes convinced that the hill they are fighting over is in fact the historical Ziklag of David's nascent kingdom. It is not clear why this is significant enough to name the novel after it, especially when that character realizes that he was mistaken. None of the reviews I read have a good reason, and it doesn't seem that Izhar ever explained himself. ויקיפדיה hypothesizes: <blockquote lang=he><p>ניתן לשער שהבחירה של ס. יזהר לקרוא לספר על שם טעות הזיהוי של ברזילי היא אירונית, וייתכן שהיא באה למתוח ביקורת על האופן בו כל גבעה בנגב הופכת לאתר היסטורי מקראי.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%99%D7%9E%D7%99_%D7%A6%D7%A7%D7%9C%D7%92">ימי צקלג</a></footer></blockquote> I suspect that Izhar was more aware than people give him credit for, about the implications of Ziklag and David's behavior, and saw in the actions of the Palmach a reflection of what happened in our story. Izhar's characters seem to act like David, ואיש ואשה לא יחיה דוד. <blockquote lang=en><P>David ben-Gurion told Yizhar that he'd read about 130 pages and felt that Israeli youth "were better than that"...Two judges [who denied the book the Bialik prize] noted: "The freedom fighters are stripped of all positive attachment to our people or homeland" and "Yizhar presents Israeli youth as having no ethical or human values".</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://www.press.umich.edu/pdf/9780472115419-ch4.pdf">Anita Shapira, <cite>Hirbet Hizah: Between Remembrance and Forgetting</cite></a></footer></blockquote> However we look at Israeli soldiers in recent times, David's actions in תנ״ך need to be explained. The midrash brings it as one of Haman's arguments that the Jews must be destroyed: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>אם על המלך טוב יכתב לאבדם</em> אמר ר״ל בשעה שאמר המן הרשע לאחשורוש בא ונאבד את ישראל מן העולם, אמר לו אחשורוש לא יכלת להון בדיל דאלקהון לא שביק לון כל עיקר. תא חזי מה עביד לון למלכין קמאי דהוון קומינן דהוון: פשטון ידיהון עליהון דהוון מלכיא רברביא וגובריא טפי מינן וכל מאן דאתי עליהון למבדינהו מן עלמא</p> <p>[Haman goes to Bilaam for advice and tells him how awful the Jews are]</p> <p>אמר לו ראה מה עשו אומה זו למצרים שעשו להם כמה טובות ומה למצרים שעשו להם כמה טובות עשו להם כך לשאר אומות על אחת כמה וכמה...מלך ראשון שאול שמו והלך ונלחם בארץ אבי אבא עמלק והרג מהם מאה אלפים פרשים ביום אחד וגם לא חמל על איש ועל אשה ולא על עולל ויונק ואיני יודע במה הרגם ועוד מה עשה לאגג זקני שחמלו עליו תחלה לסוף בא אדם מהם ושמו שמואל חתכו ונתן בשרו מאכל לעוף השמים כדכתיב (שמואל א טו) וישסף שמואל את אגג ואיני יודע במה הרגו מיתה משונה כזאת ששמעתם. ואחר זאת היה להם מלך אחד דוד בן ישי שמו והיה משחית ומכלה את כל הממלכות ולא היה חומל עליהם שנאמר (שם כו) <em>ואיש ואשה לא יחיה דוד</em>.</p> <footer class=source>אסתר רבה ג:יג</footer></blockquote> I'm not claiming that Haman is the model of moral rectitude, but the point stands. Killing איש ואשה to cover his tracks shocks us with its brutality, not what we expect from דוד מלך ישראל. Malbim justifies it as part of the מצוה of conquering the land: <blockquote lang=he><p>שהנה יושבות הארץ מעולם, מימות יהושע, והם מן השבע עממין שקיים בהם מצות לא תחיה כל נשמה.</p> <footer class=source>מלבי״ם שמואל א כז:ח</footer></blockquote> I have dealt with the morality of the "genocide" against the Canaanites <a href="/פרשת+שופטים+תשע״ג/">before</a>, but this answer is not satisfying here. The nations to the southwest were not on the list in Joshua of areas that remained to be conquered. Canaanites not living in the land are not part of this מצוה: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>י</b> כי תקרב אל עיר להלחם עליה וקראת אליה לשלום׃ <b>יא</b> והיה אם שלום תענך ופתחה לך; והיה כל העם הנמצא בה יהיו לך למס ועבדוך</p> <footer class=source>דברים פרק כ</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>במלחמת הרשות הכתוב מדבר, כמו שמפורש בענין (פסוק טו) כן תעשה לכל הערים הרחוקות וגו׳.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, דברים כ:י, ד״ה כי תקרב אל עיר</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>אפילו אתה מוצא בה משבעה אומות שנצטוית להחרימם, אתה רשאי לקיימם.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, דברים כ:יא, ד״ה כל העם הנמצא בה</footer></blockquote> The Abarbanel justifies it as an act of war; David, after all, is a Philistine general: <blockquote lang=he><p>והנראה אלי, האומות האלה , הגשורי והגרזי והעמלקי, שונאי נפש אכיש, ושהם היו אויביו. ולכן היה דוד מכה בהם ושולל שללם, ולא היה בזה בגידה לאכיש ולא לעמו. ולכן לא היה אכיש ואנשיו חוקרים עליו ולא היה איש מהגוים ההם צועק אליו על רעתו</p> <footer class=source>אברבנאל, שמואל א כז:ח</footer></blockquote> But this is still morally problematic. Achish didn't order him to attack the nations of the Southwest; that seems to be his own decision, to cover his tracks in <em>not</em> attacking Judah. And David himself saw it as a problem, as <a href="/Fly+Away+Little+Bird/">we mentioned</a> in looking at תהילים פרק ז,‎ שגיון לדוד: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ו</b> ויקרא לשלמה בנו; ויצוהו לבנות בית לה׳ אלקי ישראל׃ <b>ז</b> ויאמר דויד לשלמה; בנו (בני) אני היה עם לבבי לבנות בית לשם ה׳ אלקי׃ <b>ח</b> ויהי עלי דבר ה׳ לאמר דם לרב שפכת ומלחמות גדלות עשית; לא תבנה בית לשמי כי דמים רבים שפכת ארצה לפני׃ </p> <footer class=source>דברי הימים א פרק כב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>כי רחמי השם על כל מעשיו וכ' בדוד (דברי הימים א כב:ח) ודם לרוב שפכת. ולא היו מישראל.</p> <footer class=source>אבן עזרא, שמות כא:כא, ד"ה אך</footer></blockquote> I don't think the the נביא approves of David's action; I this Radak sums it up best: <blockquote lang=he><p>זה לא מצאנו שאמר לו השם. אבל דוד אמר כן בלבו כי מפני זה מנעהו השם לבנות הבית...גם בדמי הגוים אשר שפך אותם שלא היו בני מלחמתו אפשר שהיו בהם אנשים טובים וחסידים. אעפ״י כן לא נענש עליהם כי כוונתו לכלות הרשעים שלא יפרצו בישראל, ולהציל עצמו כשהיה בארץ פלשתים לא יחיה איש ואשה, אבל כיון שנזדמן לו שפיכות דמים לרוב מנעו מלבנות בית המקדש שהוא לשלום ולכפרת עון ולעטרת תפלה, כמו שמנעו להניף ברזל במזבח ובבית המקדש לפי שהברזל עושים ממנו כלי הריגה לא יעשו ממנו כלי שלום ברוב.</p> <footer class=source>רד״ק, דברי הימים א כב</footer></blockquote> But it is still very difficult. I do not have an answer, and I do not think the נביא tries to justify David's actions. He is punished מדה כנגד מדה for this: he is described as <em>ויפשטו</em> אל הגשורי והגרזי והעמלקי, and soon that ויפשטו will turn on him: <blockquote lang=he><p>יהי בבא דוד ואנשיו צקלג ביום השלישי; ו<em>עמלקי פשטו</em> אל נגב ואל צקלג ויכו את צקלג וישרפו אתה באש׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל א ל:א</footer></blockquote>
