The prophecy of 400 years of slavery isn't right: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>מ</b> ומושב בני ישראל אשר ישבו במצרים שלשים שנה וארבע מאות שנה׃ <b>מא</b> ויהי מקץ שלשים שנה וארבע מאות שנה; ויהי בעצם היום הזה יצאו כל צבאות ה׳ מארץ מצרים׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק יב</footer></blockquote> Many explanations have been offered, but Rashi (based on סדר עולם) says that both counts are correct; they are simply counting from different starting points: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>כי גר יהיה זרעך</em>: משנולד יצחק עד שיצאו ישראל ממצרים ארבע מאות שנה. כיצד, יצחק בן ששים שנה כשנולד יעקב. ויעקב כשירד למצרים אמר (בראשית מז:ט) ימי שני מגורי שלשים ומאת שנה, הרי מאה ותשעים, ובמצרים היו מאתים ועשר כמנין ”רדו“, הרי ארבע מאות שנה. </p> <p><em>בארץ לא להם</em>: לא נאמר בארץ מצרים אלא בארץ לא להם, ומשנולד יצחק (בראשית כא:לד) ויגר אברהם וגו׳, וביצחק (בראשית כו:ג) גור בארץ הזאת...(בראשית מז:ד) לגור בארץ באנו.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית טו:יג </footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>אשר ישבו במצרים</em>: אחר שאר הישיבות שישבו גרים בארץ לא להם.</p> <p><em>שלשים שנה וארבע מאות שנה</em>: בין הכל משנולד יצחק עד עכשיו היו ארבע מאות שנה. משהיה לו זרע לאברהם נתקיים (בראשית טו:יג) כי גר יהיה זרעך, ושלשים שנה היו משנגזרה גזירת בין הבתרים עד שנולד יצחק. </p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שמות יב:מ </footer></blockquote> חז״ל in translating the Torah avoided the problem by changing the wording: <blockquote lang=el><p>ἐν γη Αἰγύπτω καὶ ἐν γη Χανααν: in Egypt and in Canaan</p> <footer class=source>Septuagint, Exodus 12:40</footer></blockquote> But there's a problem. If the ברית בין הבתרים was 430 years before יציאת מצרים and 30 years before the birth of יצחק, then it must have happened when Avraham was 70 years old: <blockquote lang=he><p>ואברהם בן מאת שנה בהולד לו את יצחק בנו׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק כא:ה</footer></blockquote> But he only came to Canaan when he was 75: <blockquote lang=he><p>וילך אברם כאשר דבר אליו ה׳ וילך אתו לוט; ואברם בן חמש שנים ושבעים שנה בצאתו מחרן׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית יב:ד</footer></blockquote> Tosfot says, אין הכי נמי, it did take place 5 years before he came to the land. Our parasha is a flashback: <blockquote lang=he><p>...הפרשיות לא נאמרו כסדר ואין מוקדם ומאוחר בתורה וזה הפסוק דבין הבתרים היה קודם לכן. וכן צ״ל ע״כ שהרי אברהם היה בן שבעים שנה בברית בין הבתרים. ”ואחר הדברים האלה“ נאמר אחר מלחמת המלכים. </p> <footer class=source>תוספות, ברכות ז,ב </footer></blockquote> Artscroll says that Avraham must have come to Canaan before he was told to go: <blockquote lang=en><p>Five years before he was commanded to go settle in <i lang=he>Eretz Yisrael</i> for good, G-d had him go to Canaan where He showed him the following vision (<i lang=he>Tosafos, Berachos 7b)</i></p> <footer class=source>Artscroll Chumash, p. 67</footer></blockquote> But this is not what Tosafot says and is not implied in the text. He already had some awareness of the importance of the land, even before he was commanded: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>לא</b> ויקח תרח את אברם בנו ואת לוט בן הרן בן בנו ואת שרי כלתו אשת אברם בנו; ויצאו אתם מאור כשדים ללכת ארצה כנען ויבאו עד חרן וישבו שם׃ <b>לב</b> ויהיו ימי תרח חמש שנים ומאתים שנה; וימת תרח בחרן׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק יא</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ויאמר ה׳ אל אברם לך לך מארצך וממולדתך ומבית אביך אל הארץ אשר אראך׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית יב:א</footer></blockquote> Rav Medan explains: <blockquote lang=en><p>Perhaps we need not posit two journeys by Avraham to Eretz Yisrael; perhaps it is enough for us to move the Covenant to the end of parashat Noach, to the time when Avraham was living with his family in Charan. Charan is situated near the river Perat, which represents the border of the land promised to Avraham in the Covenant. In the Covenant between the Parts, Avraham was promised not only the land of Canaan, as in the covenant of his circumcision, but all of "this land" – including the Keini, the Kenizi, the Kadmoni and the Refaim.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.hatanakh.com/sites/herzog/files/herzog/pdf_65.pdf">Rav Yaakov Medan, <cite>"Berit Bein Ha-betarim"--the Covenant Between the Parts</cite></a></footer></blockquote> <hr/> When we look carefully at the entire paragraph, there is textual evidence that the ברית בין הבתרים was a flashback: <blockquote lang=he><p>ומזה מיישב רשב״ם דבמקום אחד משמע שהיה לילה דכתיב ”וספור הככבים“ ובתר הכי כתיב ”ויהי השמש לבוא“ משמע שהוא יום. אלא ודאי ש״מ דשני פרשיות הם ולאו בבת אחת נאמרו ואין מוקדם ומאוחר בתורה.</p> <footer class=source>תוספות, ברכות ז,ב </footer></blockquote> The dividing point is is the pasuk והאמן בה׳; the verb is in the past perfect ("he had believed in ה׳"; "he had had faith" sounds funny). And it ends with the past perfect, ביום ההוא כרת ה׳ את אברם ברית ("on that day ה׳ had sealed a covenant with Avram"). This division is reflected in the division of aliyot as well.</p> <hr/> So, in this model, why mention the ברית בין הבתרים here? Rashi introduces the story as a consequence of the war: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>אחר הדברים האלה</em>: כל מקום שנאמר אחר סמוך, אחרי מופלג. אחר שנעשה לו נס זה שהרג את המלכים והיה דואג ואומר שמא קבלתי שכר על כל צדקותי, לכך אמר לו המקום אל תירא אברם אנכי מגן לך מן העונש שלא תענש על כל אותן נפשות שהרגת, ומה שאתה דואג על קבול שכרך, שכרך הרבה מאד. </p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית טו:א </footer></blockquote> The gemara offers three reasons for the ברית בין הבתרים and its augury of slavery and oppression: <blockquote lang=he><p>אמר רבי אבהו אמר רבי אלעזר: מפני מה נענש אברהם אבינו ונשתעבדו בניו למצרים מאתים ועשר שנים? מפני שעשה אנגרייא בת״ח, שנאמר: וירק את חניכיו ילידי ביתו. ושמואל אמר: מפני שהפריז על מדותיו של הקדוש ברוך הוא, שנאמר: במה אדע כי אירשנה; ורבי יוחנן אמר: שהפריש בני אדם מלהכנס תחת כנפי השכינה, שנאמר: תן לי הנפש והרכוש קח לך. </p> <footer class=source> נדרים לב,א </footer></blockquote> I want to focus on רבי יוחנן's approach: Avraham had a golden opportunity to establish the מלכות ה׳ and missed it: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויצא מלך סדם לקראתו אחרי שובו מהכות את כדרלעמר ואת המלכים אשר אתו אל עמק שוה הוא עמק המלך׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית יד:יז</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>עמק המלך</em>: ...ומדרש אגדה עמק שהושוו שם כל האומות והמליכו את אברהם עליהם לנשיא אלקים ולקצין.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית יד:יז </footer></blockquote> Note that this is still compatible with the model that the ברית בין הבתרים happened much earlier. A prophecy is never explicit and unambiguous; the words of כי גר יהיה זרעך בארץ לא להם would certainly come true, but it was Avraham's actions that determined the fulfilment of those words: נשתעבדו בניו למצרים מאתים ועשר שנים. <blockquote lang=en><p>From my teacher, Rav Yoel Bin-Nun, I learned that the approach of the teacher--Rabbi Yochanan-- is the corollary of that of the disciple--Rabbi Abahu. The assumption that there was some justification for saving the people of Sedom from their captivity and servitude is closely connected with the assumption that it would be possible to convert them and bring them to monotheistic faith. For this purpose it was proper even for Torah sages such as the members of Avraham's household to endanger themselves in order to save Lot and the men of Sedom together with him. But if Avraham decided to leave the men of Sedom and Lot alone, to allow them to return to their former evildoing, then there was no real reason for the war, and he was guilty of pressing Torah Sages into service with no justification.</p> ... <p> Had Avraham taken on rulership of the land and responsibility for the nations dwelling in it, to correct them and return them to G-d, they certainly would have joined themselves to the nation of the G-d of Avraham, and inherited the land forever. But since Avraham decided to withhold that potential sanctity from them and to bequeath the land only to his own descendants, a problem arose: to where would the nations, living in the inheritance that they had received from their forefathers in Eretz Yisrael, go? Could the native inhabitants of the land be banished for no justified reason, simply because God wanted to give the land to the descendants of Avraham?</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.hatanakh.com/sites/herzog/files/herzog/pdf_65.pdf">Rav Yaakov Medan, <cite>"Berit Bein Ha-betarim"--the Covenant Between the Parts</cite></a></footer></blockquote> This is what Avraham's mission had been before he moved to Canaan: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויקח אברם את שרי אשתו ואת לוט בן אחיו ואת כל רכושם אשר רכשו ואת הנפש אשר עשו בחרן; ויצאו ללכת ארצה כנען ויבאו ארצה כנען׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית יב:ה</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p> <em>אשר עשו בחרן</em>: שהכניסן תחת כנפי השכינה, אברהם מגייר את האנשים, ושרה מגיירת הנשים, ומעלה עליהם הכתוב כאלו עשאום. </p> <footer class=source>רש״ית בראשית יב:ה</footer></blockquote> And רבי יוחנן says that it should have continued to be his mission. Instead his focus became his family and its future, and the conflicts that will dominate the rest of ספר בראשית. <blockquote lang=en><p>One of the most striking features of Judaism is the tension it embodies between the universal and the particular. The Torah begins with characters and events whose significance is that they are universal archetypes: Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the flood, the builders of Babel. Their stories tell us about the human condition as such: obedience and rebellion, faith and fratricide, hubris and nemesis, technology and violence, the order G-d makes and the chaos we create. Not until the twelfth chapter of Bereishith does the Torah turn to the particular, to one family, that of Abraham and Sarah, and the covenant G-d enters into with them and their descendants.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://rabbisacks.org/covenant-conversation-5768-miketz-faith-universal-and-particular/">Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, <cite>Miketz (5768)--Faith, Universal and Particular</cite></a></footer></blockquote> One wonders, could it have been different?
