So no problem with reading it in public; no one is paying attention. So what do I do with this image of G-d on a throne of sapphire, surrounded by a rainbow glow? I could just ignore it and drift off to sleep. Or I could do the Jewish thing and answer a question with another question: What does this have to do with שבועות? It’s more than “both were a revelation”. This very image appears in the story of מעמד הר סיני. {:he .lines} ><b>א</b> ואל משה אמר עלה אל ה׳ אתה ואהרן נדב ואביהוא ושבעים מזקני ישראל; והשתחויתם מרחק׃ <b>ב</b> ונגש משה לבדו אל ה׳ והם לא יגשו; והעם לא יעלו עמו׃... <b>ז</b> ויקח ספר הברית ויקרא באזני העם; ויאמרו כל אשר דבר ה׳ נעשה ונשמע׃... <b>ט</b> ויעל משה ואהרן נדב ואביהוא ושבעים מזקני ישראל׃ <b>י</b> ויראו את אלקי ישראל; ותחת רגליו כמעשה לבנת הספיר וכעצם השמים לטהר׃ <b>יא</b> ואל אצילי בני ישראל לא שלח ידו; ויחזו את האלקים ויאכלו וישתו׃ > <b>יב</b> ויאמר ה׳ אל משה עלה אלי ההרה והיה שם; ואתנה לך את לחת האבן והתורה והמצוה אשר כתבתי להורתם׃... <b>יח</b> ויבא משה בתוך הענן ויעל אל ההר; ויהי משה בהר ארבעים יום וארבעים לילה׃ --שמות פרק כד Same "seeing" G-d, same sapphire, but a little different--here the sapphire is a brick, לבנת הספיר, rather than a stone, אבן ספיר. And here they don't see the כסא, but תחת רגליו. I don't pretend to understand the prophetic experience but I imagine that it is a synesthetic phenomenon; it doesn't involve the senses but our primate brains have to interpret it somehow, so it gets experienced as though it were being sensed. {:he} > וכל העם ראים את הקולת ואת הלפידם ואת קול השפר ואת ההר עשן; וירא העם וינעו ויעמדו מרחק׃ --שמות פרק כ:טו {:he} ><em>ראים את הקולת</em>: רואין את הנשמע, שאי אפשר לראות במקום אחר. --רש״י, שמות פרק כ:טו So the prophets "see" "something". And what they see is remarkably consistent: {:he} ><b>יד</b> ויאמר מִיכָיְהוּ; חי ה׳ כי את אשר יאמר ה׳ אלי אתו אדבר׃... > <b>יט</b> ויאמר לכן שמע דבר ה׳; ראיתי את ה׳ ישב על כסאו וכל צבא השמים עמד עליו מימינו ומשמאלו׃ --מלכים א פרק כב {:he} ><b>א</b> בשנת מות המלך עזיהו ואראה את אדנ־י ישב על כסא רם ונשא; ושוליו מלאים את ההיכל׃ <b>ב</b> שרפים עמדים ממעל לו שש כנפים שש כנפים לאחד; בשתים יכסה פניו ובשתים יכסה רגליו ובשתים יעופף׃ <b>ג</b> וקרא זה אל זה ואמר קדוש קדוש קדוש ה׳ צבאות; מלא כל הארץ כבודו׃ --ישעיהו פרק ו The Malbim tries to understand this sapphire (note that sapphires can be any color (technically not red, because then it's called a ruby) or transparent. It is כעצם השמים לטהר, "pure as the sky", and a הנגה that is כמראה הקשת אשר יהיה בענן ביום הגשם. Malbim says it is a *prism*: {:he} >וראה את הכסא כמראה אבן ספיר שהוא מוכן לקבל כל המראות, ודרך ספיריית עולם הכסא השיג וחזה השפע היורדת מהאלקות אשר באצילות העליון בשבעה גווני הקשת כמה שכתוב ”כמראה הקשת אשר יהיה בענן ביום הגשם וגו'“, ונקרא אבן ספיר על שם הספיריית ועל שם שמושך הכח מהספירות שלמעלה. --מלבי"ם, שמות כד:י He's getting very kabbalistic here. The idea is that ה׳ is infinite and unknowable but manifests in the world in perceptible ways. We can see the created world, we experience joy and tragedy and understand them all as gifts of G-d. These various ways that we experience the presence of G-d are called the ספירות, which I will leave untranslated, but we know what they are: חסד,‎ גבורה,‎ תפארת,‎ נצח,‎ הוד,‎ יסוד,‎ מלכות. These categories help us think about theological concepts; ה׳ doesn't have "parts"--ה׳ אחד. This is "word picture, for making understanding". The image is of ה׳'s manifestation in the world as a Divine "light", or שפע, that comes from where ה׳ "sits": >The primary meaning of the Hebrew /yashab/ is “he was seated” [but] the term was applied to everything that is permanent and unchanging...When applied to G-d, the verb is to be taken in that latter sense: (איכה ה:יט)‎ אַתָּה ה׳ לְעוֹלָם תֵּשֵׁב; (תהילים‎ קכג:א)‎ הַיֹּשְׁבִי בַּשָּׁמָיִם...He who is everlasting, constant, and in no way subject to change; immutable in His Essence, and as He consists of nought but His Essence, He is mutable in no way whatever; not mutable in His relation to other things... --Guide for the Perplexed I:11, Friedlander translation This is Malbim's עולם הכסא, or אצילות ("next-to-ness", adjacency). But we can't experience that; the light is refracted into a spectrum of colors. Malbim says the ספיר is named for the ספירות; I think the etymology is backward; ספירות in later kabbalah is taken from the ספיר here. I like that image; it helps me think about some very deep things. But really, why do I care? It's all far too "woo woo" for me. The Malbim says there are two parts of this prism: כסא and תחת רגליו. {:he} ><em>כמעשה לבנת הספיר</em>: והוא עצמו מה שראה יחזקאל ”כמראה אבן ספיר דמות כסא“, רק שיחזקאל ראה כמראה אבן והם ראו כמעשה לבנת, שיש הבדל בין אבן ובין לְבֵנָה, שהאבן מתהוה בטבע לא על ידי מעשה בני אדם, והלבנה עשויה על ידי בני אדם רומסים בחומר...בעת שראו הזקנים את המרכבה, אז היתה ההנהגה בדרך הנסיי שופעת מעולם הכסא לפי מעשה הדור וצדקתם, לכן ראו לבנת הספיר שהלבנה נעשה ע"י בני אדם. --מלבי"ם, שמות כד:י G-d manifests in the world in two ways, in the created universe, and in the social world that we create by our actions. Human beings create the ספיר by which the Divine light is refracted in the world. That's what it means when Yeshaya says that the earth is G-d's footstool: {:he} >כה אמר ה׳ השמים כסאי והארץ הדם רגלי; אי זה בית אשר תבנו לי ואי זה מקום מנוחתי׃ --ישעיהו סו:א {:he} >השמים שמים לה׳; והארץ נתן לבני אדם׃ --תהילים קטו:טז But at the same time, it is the בית המקדש that is G-d's footstool: {:he} >רוממו ה׳ אלקינו והשתחוו להדם רגליו קדוש הוא׃ --תהלים צט:ה We just completed the ספירת העומר, and we all know how that ספירה is connected to the ספירות we mentioned above. Every week represents a different ספירה, and every day is a different aspect of that ספירה. But those ספירות aren't about seeing G-d in the world. They are about improving ourselves and our relationship with others, as we approach the anniversary of the giving of the Torah. That is how the Malbim sees this image of מעשה מרכבה. G-d's presence in the world depends on our actions. As Rav Soloveitchik puts it, >[T]he Torah's main objective is the translation of the numinous into the kerygmatic... --<a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/0881257710">Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, <cite>Worship of the Heart</cite></a>, p. 85 בני ישראל were given an unimaginable vision of ה׳'s glory. But the take-home message was תחת רגליו כמעשה לבנת הספיר.
