He was about two (after fully weaned) when he moved into Pharaoh's house: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>יגדל הילד</em>, כ״ד חדש הניקתהו.</p> <footer class=source>שמות רבה (וילנא) פרשת שמות פרשה א סימן כו </footer></blockquote> Surely he had a name before then? Why does the Torah not tell us anything? <hr/> We only know the name that בת פרעה gives him. Textually, that marks her as his "real" mother: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>לב</b> <em>ותהר לאה ותלד בן ותקרא שמו</em> ראובן; כי אמרה כי ראה ה׳ בעניי כי עתה יאהבני אישי׃ <b>לג</b> <em>ותהר עוד ותלד בן</em> ותאמר כי שמע ה׳ כי שנואה אנכי ויתן לי גם את זה; <em>ותקרא שמו</em> שמעון׃ <b>לד</b> <em>ותהר עוד ותלד בן </em> ותאמר עתה הפעם ילוה אישי אלי כי ילדתי לו שלשה בנים; על כן <em>קרא שמו לוי</em>׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק כט</footer></blockquote> <hr/> But even then, what was his name? It appears only one other time (actually twice, but it's the same pasuk) in תנ״ך: <blockquote lang=he><p>יִשְׁלַח מִמָּרוֹם יִקָּחֵנִי; יַמְשֵׁנִי מִמַּיִם רַבִּים׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב כב:יז and תהילים יח:יז</footer></blockquote> There's a much more common word: <blockquote lang=he><p>ותאמרן איש מצרי הצילנו מיד הרעים; וגם דלה דלה לנו וישק את הצאן׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות ב:יט</footer></blockquote> He should have been called דָּלִי! Moshe meaning "child" fits. And that name doesn't mean "drawn out", as Ibn Ezra pointed out; it means "one who draws out": <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ותקרא שמו משה</em>: ממלט ומושה את אחרים מצרה.</p> <footer class=source>ספורנו, שמות ב:י</footer></blockquote> <hr/> But what was his birth name? For that, we're going to have to look at an "extreme" midrashic interpretation, of a pasuk in דברי הימים that is talking about the descendants of Judah: <blockquote lang=he><p> וְאִשְׁתּ֣וֹ הַיְהֻדִיָּ֗ה יָלְדָ֞ה אֶת־יֶ֨רֶד אֲבִ֤י גְדוֹר֙ וְאֶת־חֶ֙בֶר֙ אֲבִ֣י שׂוֹכ֔וֹ וְאֶת־יְקֽוּתִיאֵ֖ל אֲבִ֣י זָנ֑וֹחַ וְאֵ֗לֶּה בְּנֵי֙ בִּתְיָ֣ה בַת־פַּרְעֹ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר לָקַ֖ח מָֽרֶד׃ </p> <footer class=source>דברי הימים א ד:יח</footer></blockquote> At the פשט level, these are the children of מרד, from the family of Judah, who married an Egyptian princess, with no connection to our story. His three sons were the leaders (אבי) of three cities in Judah: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כ</b> זֹאת נַחֲלַת מַטֵּה בְנֵי יְהוּדָה לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם׃ ... <b>לד</b> וְ<em>זָנוֹחַ</em> וְעֵין גַּנִּים תַּפּוּחַ וְהָעֵינָם׃ <b>לה</b> יַרְמוּת וַעֲדֻלָּם <em>שׂוֹכֹה</em> וַעֲזֵקָה׃ ... <b>נח</b> חַלְחוּל בֵּית צוּר וּ<em>גְדוֹר</em>׃ <footer class=source>יהושוע פרק טו</footer></blockquote> But we can't let that go; if this is part of כתבי הקודש then there must be more to these chronological lists: <blockquote lang=he><p>ר׳ סימון בשם ריב״ל ור׳ חמא אבוה דר׳ הושעיה בשם רב אמרי לא ניתן דברי הימים אלא לִידָרֵש.</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא רבה (וילנא) פרשת ויקרא פרשה א סימן ג </footer></blockquote> And there are only two "בת פרעה"s in תנ״ך: Shlomo's wife, who brings עבודה זרה into his palace, and the בת פרעה of our story. Only one of these deserves to be called בִּתְיָה, "daughter of ה׳" (we use the name today but generally pronounce it בַּתְיָה): <blockquote lang=he><p>”ואלה בני בתיה בת פרעה“, ר׳ יהושע דסכנין בשם רבי לוי: אמר לה הקדוש ברוך הוא לבתיה בת פרעה: משה לא היה בנך וקראתו בנך; אף את לא את בתי ואני קורא אותך בתי שנא׳ אלה בני בתיה בת י־ה.</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא רבה (וילנא) פרשת ויקרא פרשה א סימן ג </footer></blockquote> So the midrash develops all these names as being names for the only son that our בת פרעה had, משה רבינו: <blockquote lang=he><p>עשרה שמות נקראו לו למשה.</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא רבה (וילנא) פרשת ויקרא פרשה א סימן ג</footer></blockquote> And "names", especially in the midrash, don't necessarily represent literally what a person is called, but who they truly are: <blockquote lang=he><p>תני: שלשה שמות נקראו לאדם הזה: אחד שקראו לו אביו ואמו, ואחד שקראו לו אחרים, ואחד שקרוי לו בספר תולדות ברייתו.</p> <footer class=source>קהלת רבה (וילנא) פרשה ז</footer></blockquote> So what were Moshe's ten names? <blockquote lang=he><p>ירד, שהוריד את התורה מלמעלה למטה...אביגדור...הרבה גודרין עמדו לישראל וזה היה אביהן של כולן. חבר, שחיבר את הבנים לאביהן שבשמים...אבי סוכו, שהיה אביהן של נביאים שסוכים ברוח הקודש...יקותיאל...שעשה את הבנים מקוין לאביהם שבשמים. אבי זנוח, זה משה שהיה אב למזניחים שהזניחום מע״ז.</p> <p>רבי יהודה ברבי אלעאי אמר אף טוביה שמו הה״ד (שמות ב:ב) ”ותרא אותו כי טוב הוא“ כי טוביה הוא, רבי ישמעאל בר אמי אמר אף שמעיה שמו...(דברי הימים א כד:ו) וַיִּכְתְּבֵם שְׁמַעְיָה בֶן נְתַנְאֵל הַסּוֹפֵר מִן הַלֵּוִי; שמעיה, ששמע י־ה תפלתו, בן נתנאל, בן שנתנה לו תורה מיד ליד. הסופר, שהיה סופרן של ישראל...אף לוי היה שמו, על עיקר משפחתו...ומשה, הרי עשרה...</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא רבה (וילנא) פרשת ויקרא פרשה א סימן ג </footer></blockquote> Notice how the midrash puts the names in our pasuk from דברי הימים together: ירד אבי גדור is the one who brought down the מצוות דאורייתא and established the מסורה of מצוות דרבנן;‎ חבר אבי שוכו is the one who connected G-d to Israel and established the מסורה of נבואה; and יקותיאל אבי זנוח, the one who connected Israel to G-d and established the מסורה of עבודה. His parents called him טוביה from ותרא אותו כי טוב הוא; full of potential but with no way of knowing how his life would turn out. The ninth name is שְׁמַעְיָה בֶן נְתַנְאֵל הַסּוֹפֵר in his role as scribe of the תורה שבכתב. But the tenth, the name שקרוי לו בספר תולדות ברייתו, was משה. According to Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch, the word “shem” is related to the word “sham” [there]. “Sham” defines where an item is and “shem” defines where a person is. Moshe Rabbeinu, the master of all prophets, the giver of the Torah, had many attributes. There were many aspects to his personality, his career, and his talents. But perhaps the underlying facet that really defined Moshe, was his modesty (anivus). “The man Moshe was very modest, more so than any person on the face of the earth.” [Bamidbar 12:3]</p> <p>It is only because of Moshe’s humility that the Almighty could trust him to transmit the Torah and to be the master of all prophets. All the other attributes and achievements of Moshe Rabbeinu’s career stem from his unique modesty. The unchallengeable role he played in the life of our nation represents virtually “absolute power.” The only reason why Hashem felt “comfortable” giving Moshe such power, was because of Moshe’s extraordinary humility and modesty.</p> <p>What incident in Moshe Rabbeinu’s life gave birth to this quality of humility? The answer to that question, I believe, is “from the water I have drawn him forth.” It has a profound effect on a person’s ego if he goes through life with the understanding that “but for the grace of G-d and the daughter of Pharaoh, I would not be here.”</p> <p>If a person lives his whole life thinking “I am here only as a chesed” [by virtue of a Divine favor], it changes his entire outlook on life. Nothing is taken for granted anymore.
