This week's parsha is, of course, the story of the מרגלים: {:he} ><b>יז</b> וישלח אתם משה לתור את ארץ כנען; ויאמר אלהם עלו זה בנגב ועליתם את ההר׃ <b>יח</b> וראיתם את הארץ מה הוא; ואת העם הישב עליה החזק הוא הרפה המעט הוא אם רב׃ --במדבר פרק יג And it ends with the מצווה of ציצית: {:he} ><b>לח</b> דבר אל בני ישראל ואמרת אלהם ועשו להם ציצת על כנפי בגדיהם לדרתם; ונתנו על ציצת הכנף פתיל תכלת׃ <b>לט</b> והיה לכם לציצת וראיתם אתו וזכרתם את כל מצות ה׳ ועשיתם אתם; ולא תתורו אחרי לבבכם ואחרי עיניכם אשר אתם זנים אחריהם׃ --במדבר פרק טו Much has been said about the connection between the two; these spies sent לתור and the תקנה of לא תתורו אחרי לבבכם.‎ ציצת symbolizes a way of seeing. {:he} >ד"א: ציצת על שם ”וראיתם אתו“, כמו (שיר השירים ב:ט) [דּוֹמֶה דוֹדִי לִצְבִי אוֹ לְעֹפֶר הָאַיָּלִים; הִנֵּה זֶה עוֹמֵד אַחַר כׇּתְלֵנוּ מַשְׁגִּיחַ מִן הַחַלֹּנוֹת] מֵצִיץ מִן הַחֲרַכִּים. --רש״י, במדבר טו:לח And calling these men "spies" is a misnomer; לתור means literally "to tour", not so much to spy but to observe with the intention of learning, developing. >Traveling exposes individuals to new experiences, challenges, and situations that promote personal growth. It helps them to step out of their comfort zones and learn new skills. --Alice Nichols, [_What Are the Benefits of Tourism for Individual and Society?_](https://luxurytraveldiva.com/what-are-the-benefits-of-tourism-for-individual-and-society/) This shiur is based on a series of דברי תורה by Rabbi Zvi Magence, who was the מרא דאתרא of [Congregation Beth Hamedrosh Hagadol](https://archives.cjh.org/repositories/3/resources/12361) for almost 40 years. He was born in Poland and made aliyah to learn with Rav Kook in 1935, but moved to the US to study engineering in 1939 and found himself stuck due to WWII. He married in the US, took a rabbinical job, then moved to St. Louis in 1945 and stayed as the rabbi of Beth Medrash Hagadol until his death in 1989. In 2015, his sons David and Mordechai published a collection of his Torah thoughts, in English, entitled _Ḥumash Magen Zvi_. >[A]lthough Rabbi Magence lived in St. Louis, his mind and spirit were in /Eretz Yisrael/. --Rav Boaz Genut, cited in _Ḥumash Magen Zvi_,p. xvi He notes the common theme of וראיתם את הארץ מה הוא and והיה לכם לציצת וראיתם אתו, and says that the latter "seeing" was how the spies were *supposed* to see the land. It needs to end with וזכרתם את כל מצות ה׳. >The sages' intention is that for one to truly "search out" and "see" the Land of Israel, it is necessary to employ wisdom. It is insufficient to see the Land on only on a superficial level. One must apply wisdom and delve deeply into the meaning and significance of the Land to the People of Israel. Then one will reach the conclusion reported by Joshua and Caleb (Numbers 14:7): "the Land is exceedingly good". --Rabbi Zvi Magence, _Ḥumash Magen Zvi_, Numbers 13:16 >[W]e can suggest that Moses implied to the spies that they must "see" the Holy Land in its spiritual as well as tangible aspects. Israel is not only the land of Canaan, but it is the Holy Land as well. This crucial point cannot be observed with one's eyes, yet must be perceived in order to understand what the Land really is. --Rabbi Zvi Magence, _Ḥumash Magen Zvi_, Numbers 13:18 And then he adds an interesting connection. He attributes it to the Baal HaTurim, but I can't find it inside. There is another use of the word וראית[ם]: {:he} ><b>טו</b> ויאמר מלך מצרים למילדת העברית אשר שם האחת שפרה ושם השנית פועה׃ <b>טז</b> ויאמר בילדכן את העבריות וראיתן על האבנים; אם בן הוא והמתן אתו ואם בת הוא וחיה׃ --שמות פרק א >When a child is born, and the parents consider how he\/she will develop, they should "see" and consider his\/her spiritual development as well as physical development. The parents' concern should extend beyond their child's "earthly" development. --Rabbi Zvi Magence, _Ḥumash Magen Zvi_, Numbers 13:18 וראיתם את הארץ really had two sides: the ציצת side and the וראיתן על הָאׇבְנָיִם side. They needed to see the spiritual nature that was present at that time, and the potential that was there, if בני ישראל could apply themselves. ---- But they failed, because of "mission creep". >Mission Creep > The gradual broadening of the original objectives of a mission or organization. --Merriam-Webster, [_mission creep_](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/mission%20creep) There is an apparent contradiction in Rashi: {:he} >וישלח אתם משה ממדבר פארן על פי ה׳; כלם אנשים ראשי בני ישראל המה׃ --במדבר יג:ג {:he} ><em>כלם אנשים</em>: כל אנשים שבמקרא לשון חשיבות, ואותה שעה כשרים היו. --רש"י, במדבר יג:ג {:he} >וילכו ויבאו אל משה ואל אהרן ואל כל עדת בני ישראל אל מדבר פארן קדשה; וישיבו אתם דבר ואת כל העדה ויראום את פרי הארץ׃ --במדבר יג:כו {:he} ><em>וילכו ויבאו</em>: מהו ”וילכו“? להקיש הליכתן לביאתן, מה ביאתן בעצה רעה אף הליכתן בעצה רעה. --רש"י, במדבר יג:כו So were they כשרים, or did they go בעצה רעה? Yes. Being good people didn't stop them from not focusing on Moshe's goal of a spiritual fact-finding mission. The people, in fact, wanted a military spy mission: {:he} ><b>כב</b> ותקרבון אלי כלכם ותאמרו נשלחה אנשים לפנינו ויחפרו לנו את הארץ; וישבו אתנו דבר את הדרך אשר נעלה בה ואת הערים אשר נבא אליהן׃ <b>כג</b> וייטב בעיני הדבר; ואקח מכם שנים עשר אנשים איש אחד לשבט׃ <b>כד</b> ויפנו ויעלו ההרה ויבאו עד נחל אשכל; וירגלו אתה׃ --דברים פרק א And Moshe failed to make that clear. >Moshe's mistake lay in combining these two aims, so fundamentally different in nature and in their details, into one mission. He may have done this in order to avoid the complication of sending two separate missions to Canaan, or he may have had some other reason. In any event, this represented a dual mistake. On one hand, combining the two missions was a sin against the holy task of sending princes of Israel by G-d's command...Furthermore, the military mission was not merely a mundane task, but one arising from a weakness of spirit, from a missed opportunity for greatness... > Moreover, the combination of the two missions also did an injustice to the mundane mission, and one with disastrous consequences. A military spy mission has its own requirements and its own information specifications. A spying operation is doomed to failure if, rather than being planned with precision, it is tacked on as an afterthought to another dispatch. --Rav Yaakov Medan, [_The Mission of the Spies_](http://etzion.org.il/en/mission-spies) That comes up in the interesting treatment of Yehoshua: {:he} ><b>ח</b> למטה אפרים הושע בן נון׃... <b>טז</b> אלה שמות האנשים אשר שלח משה לתור את הארץ; ויקרא משה להושע בן נון יהושע׃ --במדבר פרק יג הושע בן נון was his name given at birth. {:he} ><b>כ</b> ובני אפרים שותלח; וברד בנו ותחת בנו ואלעדה בנו ותחת בנו׃ ...<b>כו</b> לעדן בנו עמיהוד בנו אלישמע בנו׃ <b>כז</b> נון בנו יהושע בנו׃ --דברי הימים א פרק ז He was the grandson of the נשיא לבני אפרים: {:he} >דגל מחנה אפרים לצבאתם ימה; ונשיא לבני אפרים אלישמע בן עמיהוד׃ --במדבר ב:יח And he was called יהושע when he became Moshe's student: {:he} > ודבר ה׳ אל משה פנים אל פנים כאשר ידבר איש אל רעהו; ושב אל המחנה ומשרתו יהושע בן נון נער לא ימיש מתוך האהל׃ --שמות לג:יא {:he} ><em>ויקרא משה להושע בן נון יהושע</em>: לא עתה קרא אותו כן, שהרי כבר קודם לכן נקרא יהושע אלא כך פירושו: הושע בן נון שאמרנו למעלה שנקרא כן בבית אביו הוא אותו שקרא משה [יהושע] כשנעשה משרתו והפקידו על ביתו, שכך היה מנהגם כמו (בראשית מא:מה): וַיִּקְרָא פַרְעֹה שֵׁם יוֹסֵף צָפְנַת פַּעְנֵחַ. ויקרא לדניאל (דניאל ד:ה) דִּי שְׁמֵהּ בֵּלְטְשַׁאצַּר כְּשֻׁם אֱלָהִי. --רשב"ם, במדבר יג:טז But then why mention it here? {:he} ><em>ויקרא משה להושע וגו'</em>: התפלל עליו: ”י־ה יושיעך מעצת מרגלים“. --רש"י, במדבר יג:טז Moshe was not praying that Yehoshua be saved from the spies' evil plans; that would be מעצת *ה*מרגלים. At this point, the spies were כשרים. The problem was the whole concept of sending spies instead of tourists: עצת מרגלים. Yehoshua was sent as one of the "אנשים", the grandson of the head of his tribe. Moshe realized that mistakes have been made, that a mission of עצת מרגלים is going to fail. He prays that Yehoshua go as משרת משה. ---- Moshe has the right intention in sending this mission, but somehow he does not communicate it with the people. {:he} ><b>א</b> וידבר ה׳ אל משה לאמר׃ <b>ב</b> שלח לך אנשים ויתרו את ארץ כנען אשר אני נתן לבני ישראל; איש אחד איש אחד למטה אבתיו תשלחו כל נשיא בהם׃ --במדבר פרק יג {:he} ><em>שלח לך</em>: לדעתך. אני איני מצוה לך, אם תרצה שלח. --רש"י, במדבר יג:ב Rashi is quoting the gemara (סוטה לד,ב), but the gemara only has the one word, לדעתך. Rabbi Magence interprets it differently. >/L’da’atcha/ can be understood as well to mean in accordance with your attitude. --Rabbi Zvi Magence, _Ḥumash Magen Zvi_, Numbers 13:18 The Slonimer spells it out: {:he} >והיינו שלמשה היתה דעה מיוחדת בשליחותם שונה מדעת המרגלים. וזהו מדכתיב וייטב הדבר בעיני משה [(דברים א:כג) וַיִּיטַב בְּעֵינַי הַדָּבָר וָאֶקַּח מִכֶּם שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר אֲנָשִׁים אִישׁ אֶחָד לַשָּׁבֶט], היינו שעצם הדבר לשלוח מרגלים הוטב בעיניו, אבל רק הדבר עצמו ולא הכוונה שהיתה למרגלים, כי לו היתה בזה כוונה אחרת. ודעת משה בשליחת המרגלים לא היתה על מצבה הגשמי של ארץ ישראל אלא על מצבה הרוחני. --נתיבות שלום, שלך לך, _ענין המרגלים_ And the tragedy is that the spies were unable to accomplish וראיתן על האבנים: they could not see the spiritual potential inherent when בני ישראל live in ארץ ישראל. >Rabbi Yitzḥak Nissenbaum (1868-1942), one of the early thinkers of religious Zionism, writes that the spies “attempted to separate the Land and Torah.” The spies saw Torah and the Land as being in opposition and contradiction to each other, with the nation having to choose between the two. The ten spies thought that entry into the Land would put Torah observance at risk, and chose Torah over the Land.
