Last week, Joey Rosenfeld gave me a little book and suggested that I read the last chapter. I know whenever I accept reading material from Joey I'm about to fall down the rabbit hole, but it's always fascinating and worthwhile. This book is שובי נפשי: חסד או חירות by הרב שג״ר. Rabbi Shimon Gershon Rosenberg, known by his acronym שג״ר, was rosh yeshiva at Yeshivat Siach Yitzchak, and brought Chassidut and post-modern philosophy into religious Zionist thinking. <blockquote lang=en><p>To read Rav Shagar is to encounter a thinker unlike any that American, Modern Orthodox Jews are familiar with. Don't assume I've got anything right; talk to Joey if you have questions. <hr/> There's a well-known paragraph in this week's parasha: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יא</b> כי המצוה הזאת אשר אנכי מצוך היום לא נפלאת הוא ממך ולא רחקה הוא׃ <b>יב</b> לא בשמים הוא; לאמר מי יעלה לנו השמימה ויקחה לנו וישמענו אתה ונעשנה׃ <b>יג</b> ולא מעבר לים הוא; לאמר מי יעבר לנו אל עבר הים ויקחה לנו וישמענו אתה ונעשנה׃ <b>יד</b> כי קרוב אליך הדבר מאד; בפיך ובלבבך לעשתו׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים פרק ל</footer></blockquote> We often interpret המצוה הזאת as referring to the whole Torah, that לא בשמים הוא and we have to learn and interpret it ourselves, without prophetic intervention. But that is hard to reconcile with the last pasuk of the paragraph, בפיך ובלבבך לעשתו. It sounds like it's referring to a מצוה that is done בפה ובלב. Sforno thus assumes that המצוה הזאת is referring to the מצוה of the previous paragraph, the מצוה of תשובה. <blockquote lang=he><p><em>כי המצוה הזאת</em>: ...כי אמנם זאת המצוה של תשובה אשר אנכי מצוך היום כאמרו בכל חטא בפרשת ויקרא ואשם ואשמו שהענין כולם הוא שיכיר החוטא את חטאו כמו שפירש אח״כ באמרו והיה כי יאשם לאחת מאלה והתודה אשר חטא עליה (ויקרא ה:ה) ... <em>לא נפלאת היא ממך</em>: שתצטרך לנביאים. <em>ולא רחוקה היא</em>: שתצטרך לחכמי הדור הרחוקים.</p> <footer class=source>ספורנו, דברים ל:יא </footer></blockquote> Teshuva is presented as something that is both our responsibility (שבת עד ה׳ אלקיך) and ה׳'s (מל ה׳ אלקיך את לבבך): <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> והיה כי יבאו עליך כל הדברים האלה הברכה והקללה אשר נתתי לפניך; והשבת אל לבבך בכל הגוים אשר הדיחך ה׳ אלקיך שמה׃ <b>ב</b> ושבת עד ה׳ אלקיך ושמעת בקלו ככל אשר אנכי מצוך היום; אתה ובניך בכל לבבך ובכל נפשך׃ ...<b>ו</b> ומל ה׳ אלקיך את לבבך ואת לבב זרעך; לאהבה את ה׳ אלקיך בכל לבבך ובכל נפשך למען חייך׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים פרק ל</footer></blockquote> And the Rambam explains the procedure, that it is בפיך ובלבבך לעשתו The Rambam describes it as a procedure that needs to be accomplished. It depends on Man's free will, to decide to do better in the future: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>הואיל ורשות כל אדם נתונה לו</em> כמו שביארנו, ישתדל האדם לעשות תשובה ולנעור כפיו מחטאיו, כדי שימות והוא בעל תשובה, כדי שיזכה לחיי העולם הבא.</p> <footer class=source>משנה תורה, הלכות תשובה ז:א </footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>כל המצוות שבתורה, בין עשה בין לא תעשה--אם עבר אדם על אחת מהן, בין בזדון בין בשגגה--כשיעשה תשובה וישוב מחטאו, חייב להתוודות לפני האל ברוך הוא.</p> <footer class=source>משנה תורה, הלכות תשובה א:א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ומה היא התשובה--הוא שיעזוב החוטא חטאו, ויסירנו ממחשבתו ויגמור בליבו שלא יעשהו עוד...וכן יתנחם על שעבר.</p> <footer class=source>משנה תורה, הלכות תשובה ב:ב</footer></blockquote> <hr/> But why then does the Torah have to tell us לא בשמים הוא? It doesn't seem more outlandish than any other מצוה. The problem is that the idea of teshuva, that we can achieve forgiveness for a sin against the all-powerful and all-good G-d is a tremendous theological problem. The theology of Christianity centers around their answer to this problem; the Jewish answer is that teshuva is built in to the nature of the world. <blockquote lang=he><p>והא תניא שבעה דברים נבראו קודם שנברא העולם ואלו הן תורה ותשובה...תשובה דכתיב (תהילים צ) בטרם הרים ילדו וכתיב (תהילים צ) תשב אנוש עד דכא ותאמר שובו בני אדם.</p> <footer class=source>פסחים נד,א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>When we speak of the creation of the world, we believe that it was formed יש מאין, a tangible reality out of nothing...</p> <p>Now let us consider a grave sin like the murder of Hevel by Kayin. According to our sages, Kayin did <i lang=he>teshuva</i> for his crime. But what does that mean? Can this <i lang=he>teshuva</i> bring back Hevel? Clearly not; he is dead. It is not like a case of robbery, where the money can be returned. Here the act cannot be undone.</p> <p>Yet this is the wonder of <i lang=he>teshuva</i>. If someone fully and sincerely repents, then Hashem considers it as if the crime had never been done. Instead of יש מאין we have אין מיש...So in this sense, <i lang=he>teshuva</i> was created before the formation of the world. Because <i lang=he>teshuva</i> returns conditions to where they were before the Creation to the status of אין...</p> <footer class=source>Rav Shimon Schwab, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Selected-Speeches-Collection-Contemporary-Comparitive/dp/1560620587/r"><cite>Selected Speeches</cite></a>,pp. 43-44</footer></blockquote> Teshuva changes the past. <blockquote lang=he><p>אמר ריש לקיש גדולה תשובה שזדונות נעשות לו כשגגות שנאמר (הושע יד:א) שׁוּבָה יִשְׂרָאֵל עַד ה׳ אֱ־לֹהֶיךָ; כִּי כָשַׁלְתָּ בַּעֲוֺנֶךָ׃ הא עון מזיד הוא וקא קרי ליה מכשול. איני? והאמר ריש לקיש גדולה תשובה שזדונות נעשות לו כזכיות שנאמר (יחזקאל לג:יט) וּבְשׁוּב רָשָׁע מֵרִשְׁעָתוֹ וְעָשָׂה מִשְׁפָּט וּצְדָקָה עֲלֵיהֶם הוּא יִחְיֶה׃ לא קשיא: כאן מאהבה כאן מיראה.</p> <footer class=source>יומא פו,ב</footer></blockquote> <hr/> Rav Shagar asks, what is teshuva, really? And focuses on the תקנת השבין of R׳ Zadok Hacohen of Lublin: <blockquote lang=he><p>הבעות שהוא [ר׳ צדוק] דן בהן, הן השאלות שקלסיות של תושבה: כיצד ניתן לצחוק את העבר, מה פישרה של תשובה מאהבה שמהפכת זדונות לזכויות, מי יתקע ליד השב שלא ישוב לחטאו, ועוד.</p> <footer class=source>הרב שג״ר, <cite>שובי נפשי</cite>, עמ׳ 133</footer></blockquote> R׳ Zadok was a student of the Ishbitzer, the author of the <a href="https://he.wikisource.org/wiki/%D7%9E%D7%99_%D7%94%D7%A9%D7%99%D7%9C%D7%95%D7%97">מי השילוח</a>, a Chasidic rebbe famous for his philosophy of determinism, that הכל בידי שמים <em>אפילו</em> יראת שמים. He preached acceptance of oneself and allowing ה׳ to determine our actions. R׳ Zadok looks at teshuva in that vein. <blockquote lang=he><p>הכל צפוי, והרשות נתונה.</p> <footer class=source>משנה אבות ג:טו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>מ</b> עיקר התשובה הוא עד שיאיר ה' עיניו, שיהיו זדונות כזכויות. רוצה לומר שיכיר ויבין ש<em>כל מה שחטא היה גם כן ברצון הש״י</em>...וכטעם ידיעה ובחירה שביאר האריז״ל בסוף ספר ”ארבע מאות שקל כסף“ ששניהם אמת כל אחד במקום בפני עצמו, במקום הבחירה שם אין מקום לידיעה ובמקום הידיעה שם באמת אין מקום לבחירה. וכשמגיע לאור זה העצום אז שבו כל זדונותיו בלתי יוצאים מעומק ידיעת הש"י והוא ודעתו ורצונו הכל אחד, ומאחר שהש"י רצה כן הרי הכל זכויות, וזוכה לכפרה גמורה שביום הכיפורים.</p> ... <p><b>ק</b> תשובה היינו שמשיב אותו דבר אל הש״י, ר״ל שמכיר שהכל פועל הש״י וכחו, אפילו המחשבה טרם ‏נוצרה בלבו של אדם...נמצא הש״י נתן לו כח אז גם בהעבירה, ועי״ז אחר ‏התשובה הגמורה הוא זוכה שזדונות נעשין זכיות כי גם זה היה רצון הש״י כך.</p> <footer class=source>ר׳ צדוק, צדקת הצדיק</footer></blockquote> This is very similar to the twelve step program of Alcoholics Anonymous, that overcoming addiction involves admitting that we can't do it ourselves: <blockquote lang=en><p>As summarized by the American Psychological Association, the process involves the following:</p> <ul><li>admitting that one cannot control one's alcoholism, addiction or compulsion;</li> <li>recognizing a higher power that can give strength;</li> <li>examining past errors with the help of a sponsor (experienced member);</li> <li>making amends for these errors;</li> <li>learning to live a new life with a new code of behavior;</li> <li>helping others who suffer from the same alcoholism, addictions or compulsions.</li></ul> <footer class=source>Wikipedia, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve-step_program"><cite>Twelve-step program</cite></a></footer></blockquote> Rabbi Abraham Twerski famously uses these ideas in a Jewish, mussar-based manner. <hr/> Rav Shagar points out that these are two diametrically opposed approaches to teshuva: active, individual-centered, and passive, G-d-centered. Like most such dialectics, both are right and both are necessary, and both can end up in the same place, of being a new person whose past is changed: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ב</b>...ויעיד עליו יודע תעלומות שלא ישוב לזה החטא לעולם...</p> <p><b>ד</b>...כלומר שאני אחר ואיני אותו האיש שעשה אותן המעשים; ומשנה מעשיו כולן לטובה, ולדרך ישרה.</p> <footer class=source>משנה תורה, הלכות תשובה פרק ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>How can Rambam make that statement? A person always has <i lang=he>bechira</i>, the freedom to do good or to sin. If Hashem testifies that the person will never again commit that sin, then either he loses his <i lang=he>bechira</i> or Hashem's testimony was not correct. Neither of these is acceptable.</p> <p>I attended a meeting of recovering alcoholics at which the speaker said, "The man I once was drank. And the man I once was will drink again. If I ever go back to being the man I once was, I will drink again." Suddenly, the Rambam's words were clear. A sin does not occur in a vacuum. A sin occurs when a person is in a spiritual state that allows that sin to occur.</p> <p>...Hashem does not testify that the person will never again commit the sin, but rather that he has succeeded in attaining a level of <i lang=he>kedusha</i>, where, at this level, that sin is not a possibility. That is why the Rambam, uncharacteristically, chose to refer to Hashem as, "who knows the innermost secrets of one's heart", i.e, He knows that this person has achieved the level of spirituality.</p> <p>This why the Rambam continues that with this kind of teshuva the person can say, "I am no longer the same person that committed that sin" (ibid. 2:4).</p> <footer class=source>Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twerski, <cite>Mussar and the 12 Steps</cite></footer></blockquote> As I understand Rav Shagar's analysis, a person's teshuva changes the future by making them a different person. The miracle of teshuva is that Hashem changes the past as well. It is this new person who had committed the sinful act. This is how Rav Shagar reconciles the two approaches to teshuva. The Rambam's is תשובה מיראה. "The person I was did wrong. I reject that person as I become better". תשובה מאהבה is accepting. "I don't reject the person I was. What happened, even though I shouldn't have done it, was G-d's will and it is part of what makes me a better person today". That is why תשובה מיראה leads to זדונות נעשות לו כשגגות. The act happened, but "who I am today" would never have done such a thing. So the act is a שגגה, negligent, not intentional. But תשובה מאהבה leads to זדונות נעשות לו כזכיות. The act happened, but "who I am today" accepts it as an "act of G-d", not under my control, but it made me who I am today, which is a good thing, a זכות. [The problem with this approach is that it leads to antinomianism, that there are no laws and no right or wrong. <a href="https://www.torahmusings.com/2015/08/open-orthodox-symposium-iv/">Others have dealt with this in understanding the Ishbizter</a>, and I won't deal with that here. But this is not about our behavior *now*; that is certainly subject to the laws of the Torah and is under our free will. The question is how do we look at our acts in the past.] As is true in so many things, both approaches are true. Doing <i lang=he>teshuva</i> is not an easy thing, but it up to us and our understanding of ourselves to make ourselves into the people we ought to be. קרוב אליך הדבר מאד; בפיך ובלבבך לעשתו.
