This week's parsha jumps forward 39 years to בני ישראל's final journey to the land. In reality, they will have to fight three wars: Sichon to the west, Og to the north and Midyan to the south before they enter. This באר is the fourth miraculous water source that they've had on this 40-year journey. The first was right after leaving Egypt. {:he} > <b>כג</b> ויבאו מרתה ולא יכלו לשתת מים ממרה כי מרים הם; על כן קרא שמה מרה׃ <b>כד</b> וילנו העם על משה לאמר מה נשתה׃ <b>כה</b> ויצעק אל ה׳ ויורהו ה׳ עץ וישלך אל המים וימתקו המים; שם שם לו חק ומשפט ושם נסהו׃ --שמות פרק טו The second was right before they got the Torah. {:he} ><b>א</b> ויסעו כל עדת בני ישראל ממדבר סין למסעיהם על פי ה׳; ויחנו ברפידים ואין מים לשתת העם׃ <b>ב</b> וירב העם עם משה ויאמרו תנו לנו מים ונשתה; ויאמר להם משה מה תריבון עמדי מה תנסון את ה׳׃...<b>ה</b> ויאמר ה׳ אל משה עבר לפני העם וקח אתך מזקני ישראל; ומטך אשר הכית בו את היאר קח בידך והלכת׃ <b>ו</b> הנני עמד לפניך שם על הצור בחרב והכית בצור ויצאו ממנו מים ושתה העם; ויעש כן משה לעיני זקני ישראל׃ --שמות פרק יז And that traveled with them (it's unclear if the rock that was the water source traveled miraculously with them or that the water miraculously continued to flow from חורב into wherever their camp was) until Miriam's death. Then the water stopped and we have the incident in this week's parsha of מי מריבה. {:he} ><b>א</b> ויבאו בני ישראל כל העדה מדבר צן בחדש הראשון וישב העם בקדש; ותמת שם מרים ותקבר שם׃ <b>ב</b> ולא היה מים לעדה; ויקהלו על משה ועל אהרן׃ <b>ג</b> וירב העם עם משה; ויאמרו לאמר ולו גוענו בגוע אחינו לפני ה׳׃... > <b>ז</b> וידבר ה׳ אל משה לאמר׃ <b>ח</b> קח את המטה והקהל את העדה אתה ואהרן אחיך ודברתם אל הסלע לעיניהם ונתן מימיו; והוצאת להם מים מן הסלע והשקית את העדה ואת בעירם׃...<b>יא</b> וירם משה את ידו ויך את הסלע במטהו פעמים; ויצאו מים רבים ותשת העדה ובעירם׃ --במדבר פרק כ This water source did not travel; they were close to civilization and they bought water from local merchants. {:he} ><em>ולא נשתה מי באר</em>...כך אמר משה, אע"פ שיש בידנו מן לאכל ובאר לשתות, לא נשתה ממנו, אלא נקנה מכם אכל ומים להנאתכם, מכאן לאכסנאי אע"פ שיש בידו לאכל יקנה מן החנוני, כדי להנות את אשפיזו. --רש"י, במדבר כ:יז But Sichon won't sell them water, so they get a miraculous באר (a spring that flows, not a well in the sense of a hole in the ground). The real miracle, of course, is that this time the people don't complain. But after the Song of the Spring, it's odd that the Torah lists the places without any events; there's a perfectly good list in פרשת מסעי. Rashi isn't really helpful. {:he} ><em>וממתנה נחליאל</em>: כתרגומו. --רש"י, במדבר כא:יט So we have to look at the Targum . Onkelos tells us that the list of place names is part of the שירה. The water miraculously flowed with them. {:he} ><b>יז</b> בְּכֵן שַׁבַּח יִשְׂרָאֵל יָת תּוּשְׁבַּחְתָּא הָדָא סַקִּי בֵירָא שַׁבָּחוּ לָהּ: <b>יח</b> בֵּירָא דְּחָפְרוּהָ רַבְרְבַיָּא כְּרוּהָ רֵישֵׁי עַמָּא סַפְרַיָּא בְּחוּטְרֵיהוֹן וּמִמַּדְבְּרָא אִתְיְהִיבַת לְהוֹן: <b>יט</b> וּמִדְּאִתְיְהִיבַת לְהוֹן נָחֲתָא עִמְּהוֹן לְנַחֲלַיָּא וּמִנַחֲלַיָּא סָלְקָא עִמְּהוֹן לְרָמָתָא: <b>כ</b> וּמֵרָמָתָא לְחֵילַיָּא דִּי בְּחַקְלֵי מוֹאָב רֵישׁ רָמָתָא וּמִסְתַּכְיָא עַל אַפֵּי בֵית יְשִׁימוֹן: --תרגום אונקלוס, במדבר פרק כא אור החיים wonders why they sang שירה here and not for the other water sources or the מן. We gave a possible reason: this was the one time they *didn't* complain. But he interprets the entire poem metaphorically, and so the place names are symbolic. {:he} ><em>אז ישיר ישראל וגו'</em>: צריך לדעת שירה זו מה טיבה, גם למה לא אמרו שירה על המן כמו שאמרו שירה על המים, גם כל הפרשה צריכה ביאור, ואפשר כי שירה זו על התורה אמרוה...כי ודאי היא זאת שירת התורה שנקראת באר מים, נקראת באר על שם המקור שהיא שכינה עליונה שנקראת באר, גם (מים) לפי שהתורה נמשלה למים... > ואמרו חֲפָרוּהָ שָׂרִים [כָּרוּהָ נְדִיבֵי הָעָם]...הצדיקים הראשונים שהיו במדרגה גדולה הם שחפרו את הבאר ועשאוה לשתות ממנה והם האבות...ומאז היתה ראויה התורה לינתן לישראל ועודנה לא היתה בבחינת ההשגה לשתות ממנה עד שכרוה נדיבי העם הם משה אשר הורידה לנו... > ואומרו וּמִמִּדְבָּר מַתָּנָה פירוש מה שזכו נוחליה לא זכו אלא לצד שהיו מחשיבין עצמן כמדבר...שהתורה אינה נקנית אלא באמצעות הענוה והשפלות. --אור החיים, במדבר כא:יז {:he} ><em>וידבר ה' אל משה במדבר סיני</em>: אלא כל מי שאינו עושה עצמו כמדבר, הפקר, אינו יכול לקנות את החכמה והתורה. לכך נאמר ”במדבר סיני“. --במדבר רבה א:ז {:he} >ואומרו וּמִמַּתָּנָה, נַחֲלִיאֵל שבאמצעות התורה שניתנה לנו נחל אותנו א־ל דכתיב (דברים לב:ט) [כִּי חֵלֶק ה׳ עַמּוֹ] יַעֲקֹב חֶבֶל נַחֲלָתוֹ, גם ירצה שנחלנו א־ל להיות מיוחד לנו לאלו־ה דכתיב (תהילים קלה:ד) כִּי־יַעֲקֹב בָּחַר לוֹ יָ־הּ [יִשְׂרָאֵל לִסְגֻלָּתוֹ]... > ואומרו וּמִנַּחֲלִיאֵל בָּמוֹת פירוש ומאמצעות דבר זה שנחלנו...נעשינו במדריגה עליונה על המלאכים שבחר בנו ה' יותר מהם. --אור החיים, במדבר כא:יז Once we accepted the Torah, we reached the ultimate spiritual heights, even higher than the angels. {:he} ><b>ו</b> ויעד מלאך ה׳ ביהושע לאמר׃ <b>ז</b> כה אמר ה׳ צבאו־ת אם בדרכי תלך ואם את משמרתי תשמר וגם אתה תדין את ביתי וגם תשמר את חצרי ונתתי לך מהלכים בין העמדים האלה׃ --זכריה פרק ג And then he goes kabbalistic. {:he} >ואומרו וּמִבָּמוֹת הַגַּיְא אֲשֶׁר [בִּשְׂדֵה מוֹאָב רֹאשׁ הַפִּסְגָּה; וְנִשְׁקָפָה עַל פְּנֵי הַיְשִׁימֹן]...לזה אמרו בעלי הסוד כי זולת החטא היה האדם עולה לרקיע ודר בעליה ובחצר, וזה לך האות אליהו הנביא שעלה השמימה להשתלם גמולו ולא טעם טעם מיתה, והגוף הן אמת שאינו יכול לעמוד בעליה העליונה הגם שנזדכך הגוף ועמד בגדר רוחני אף על פי כן בערך רוחניות עליון יחשב לגשם, אלא שאמרו ז"ל (זוהר חדש רט,א) במעשה אליהו ז"ל כי בהגיעו לגלגל חמה שם נפשט מגופו והניח אותו בגלגל חמה וכשהוא יורד למטה לובשו ויורד בו, ואמרו ז"ל עוד שכשנתן ה' תורה לישראל בהר סיני נעשו ישראל בני חורין מהמיתה וחזרו להיות כאדם קודם שחטא דכתיב (שמות לב:טז) חָרוּת עַל הַלֻּחֹת ואמרו ז"ל (שמות רבה מא:ז) אל תקרי חָרוּת אלא חֵרוּת...חֵרוּת ממלאך המות....והוא מאמר הכתוב כאן וּמִבָּמוֹת הַגַּיְא פירוש ממדריגה העליונה שהשגנו באמצעות התורה יש עוד השגה אחרת מצד דבר זה שהוא הגיא שהיא ירידת גשמנו בגיא... --אור החיים, במדבר כא:יז That's a little too mystical for me, but the message is that you can reach higher than the highest spiritual heights by coming down into the valley, from מבמות into הגיא...נשקפה על פני הישימן, by coming back into the physical world and sanctifying *that*. This is the song, not of the giving of the Torah, but of bringing it into ארץ ישראל. The people had to leave Sinai where they got the Torah, leave the wilderness where they felt the שכינה constantly, and go into the grubby mess of running a real country. That was the sin of the מרגלים. >The spies were not afraid of failure, [the Lubavitcher Rebbe] said. They were afraid of success. > What was their situation now? They were eating manna from heaven. They were drinking water from a miraculous well. They were surrounded by Clouds of Glory. They were camped around the Sanctuary. They were in continuous contact with the Shechinah. Never had a people lived so close to G-d. > What would be their situation if they entered the land? They would have to fight battles, maintain an army, create an economy, farm the land, worry about whether there would be enough rain to produce a crop, and all the other thousand distractions that come from living in the world. What would happen to their closeness to G-d? They would be preoccupied with mundane and material pursuits. Here they could spend their entire lives learning Torah, lit by the radiance of the Divine. There they would be no more than one more nation in a world of nations, with the same kind of economic, social and political problems that every nation has to deal with. > The spies were not afraid of failure. They were afraid of success. Their mistake was the mistake of very holy men. They wanted to spend their lives in the closest possible proximity to G-d. What they did not understand was that G-d seeks, in the Hasidic phrase, “a dwelling in the lower worlds”.
