I want to look at this week's haftorah: <blockquote lang=he><p> כה אמר ה׳ על שלשה פשעי ישראל ועל ארבעה לא אשיבנו; על מכרם בכסף צדיק ואביון בעבור נעלים׃</p> <footer class=source>עמוס ב:ו</footer></blockquote> The connection to the parasha seems obvious, since we are all familiar with the Midrash: <blockquote lang=he><p> ובשעה אחת אחיו היו יושבים במקום אחד ולב אחד ועצה אחת ועברו עליהם ארחת ישמעאלים ואמרו בואו ונמכרנו לישמעאלים ויהיו מוליכין אותו לקצה המדבר ואין יעקב אבינו שומע שמע עוד, ומכרו אותו לישמעאלים בעשרים כסף, כל אחד ואחד נטל שני כספים לקנות מנעלים ברגליהם, שנ׳ על מכרם בכסף צדיק ואביון בעבור נעלים </p> <footer class=source>פרקי דרבי אליעזר פרק לז</footer></blockquote> And it is immortalized in the piyut we say in musaf on Yom Kippur: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>גָּ</em>בַהּ לֵב בִּגְדוֹלִים<br/> וְצִוָּה לְמַלּאת פַּלְטֵרוֹ נְעָלִים<br/> וְקָרָא לַעֲשָׂרָה חֲכָמִים גְּדוֹלִים<br/> מְבִינֵי דָת וּטְעָמֶיהָ בְּפִלְפּוּלִים</p> <p><em>דִּ</em>ינוּ מִשְׁפָּט זֶה לַאֲשׁוּרוֹ<br/> וְאַל תְּעַוְּתוּהוּ בְּכָזָב לְאָמְרוֹ<br/> כִּי אִם הוֹצִיאוּהוּ לַאֲמִתּוֹ וּלְאוֹרוֹ<br/> כִּי יִמָּצֵא אִישׁ גּוֹנֵב נֶפֶשׁ מֵאֶחָיו מִבְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְהִתְעַמֶּר בּוֹ וּמְכָרוֹ</p> <p><em>הֵ</em>ם כְּעָנוּ לו וּמֵת הַגַּנָּב הַהוּא<br/> נָם אַיֵּה אֲבוֹתֵיכֶם אֲשֶׁר אֲחִיהֶם מְכָרוּהוּ<br/> לְאֹרְחַת יִשְׁמְעֵאלִים סְחָרוּהוּ<br/> וּבְעַד נַעֲלַיִם נְתָנוּהוּ</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://he.wikisource.org/wiki/%D7%A4%D7%99%D7%95%D7%98_%D7%90%D7%9C%D7%94_%D7%90%D7%96%D7%9B%D7%A8%D7%94">פיוט אלה אזכרה</a></footer></blockquote> But this is not the פשט of the text. This is a diatribe by Amos against the injustice he saw in his own time, not in some long-distant past. To better understand the connection, we have to understand who Amos was. <hr/> He was a Judean shepherd who was called to be the נביא of the destruction of Shomron, just as Jeremiah was the נביא of the destruction of Jerusalem and Samuel was the נביא of the destruction of Shilo. He was an older contemporary of Isaiah (who was a נביא in Judah at that time). His first prophecy starts with a short address to all the surrounding nations, and how ה׳ tolerated some of their sins but there was one that sealed each one's fate: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> דברי עמוס אשר היה בנקדים מתקוע; <em>אשר חזה על ישראל</em> בימי עזיה מלך יהודה ובימי ירבעם בן יואש מלך ישראל שנתים לפני הרעש׃ <b>ב</b> ויאמר ה׳ מציון ישאג ומירושלם יתן קולו; ואבלו נאות הרעים ויבש ראש הכרמל׃ </p> <p><b>ג</b> כה אמר ה׳ על שלשה פשעי דמשק ועל ארבעה לא אשיבנו; על דושם בחרצות הברזל את הגלעד׃ <b>ד</b> ושלחתי אש בבית חזאל; ואכלה ארמנות בן הדד׃ ...</p> <p><b>ו</b> כה אמר ה׳ על שלשה פשעי עזה ועל ארבעה לא אשיבנו; על הגלותם גלות שלמה להסגיר לאדום׃ <b>ז</b> ושלחתי אש בחומת עזה; ואכלה ארמנתיה׃ ...</p> <p><b>יא</b> כה אמר ה׳ על שלשה פשעי אדום ועל ארבעה לא אשיבנו; על רדפו בחרב אחיו ושחת רחמיו ויטרף לעד אפו ועברתו שמרה נצח׃ <b>יב</b> ושלחתי אש בתימן; ואכלה ארמנות בצרה׃ ...</p> <footer class=source>עמוס פרק א</footer></blockquote> Then he goes into the sins of Judah, with the same brevity that he addressed the other nations: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ד</b> כה אמר ה׳ על שלשה פשעי יהודה ועל ארבעה לא אשיבנו; על מאסם את תורת ה׳ וחקיו לא שמרו ויתעום כזביהם אשר הלכו אבותם אחריהם׃ <b>ה</b> ושלחתי אש ביהודה; ואכלה ארמנות ירושלם׃ </p> <footer class=source>עמוס פרק ב</footer></blockquote> Then we have the bulk of his prophecy, against the kingdom of Israel. It is important to note the difference between Judah and Israel. For Judah, the final sin is על מאסם את תורת ה׳ וחקיו לא שמרו. For Israel, the final sin is על מכרם בכסף צדיק ואביון בעבור נעלים. As <a href="/%D7%A4%D7%A8%D7%A9%D7%AA+%D7%9E%D7%A6%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%A2+%D7%AA%D7%A9%D7%A2%D7%B4%D7%93/">we have discussed</a> in פרשת מצורע, there is a subtle dynamic in םפר מלכים between the kingdoms of יהודה and ישראל that חז״ל were sensitive to. יהודה and ישראל were complementary parts of what should have been a single nation. יהודה kept the בית המקדש but their בין אדם לחברו was lacking. ישראל worshiped עבודה זרה but were united and trusted each other: <blockquote lang="he"><p>אמר רבי אבא בר כהנא דורו של דוד כולם צדיקים היו וע״י שהיה להן דילטורים היו יוצאים במלחמה והיו נופלים…אבל דורו של אחאב עובדי ע״ז היו וע״י שלא היה להן דילטורין היו יורדים למלחמה ונוצחין.</p> <footer class="source">ירושלמי פאה א,א (דף ד,ב)</footer></blockquote> And this is evident in the straw the broke each respective camel's back. ה׳ could forgive Judah until they finally abandoned תורת ה׳, and could tolerate Israel's עבודה זרה until they lost their sense of justice. It is this שנאת אחים that Amos saw that חז״ל saw foreshadowed in the sale of Joseph, that made the Midrashic connection between the two. <hr/> Rav Soloveitchik saw another parallel between the haftorah and the parasha: <blockquote lang=en><p>A <i lang=he>baal ha-halomot</i> is not a dim-witted person, but often a gifted, bright individual--a visionary, leader and innovator. What did the brothers want, then? The answer is that they wanted to squelch Joseph's dreams. Joseph possessed a prophetic spark and a charismatic personality. The brothers attempted to suppress these things, but prophecy is an overwhelming force that breaks through the human personality. In essence, this was the transgression of Joseph's brothers--their attempt to block that visionary power.</p> <p>This is the organic connection between the <i lang=he>haftarah</i> and the <i lang=he>parasha</i> of Vayeshev. Like Joseph's brothers, the contemporaries of the prophet Amos wanted to stifle his prophecies as well.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://www.ou.org/oupress/product/darosh-darash-yosef/">Rabbi Avishai David, <cite>Darosh Darash Yosef</cite></a>, p.95, citing Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יט</b> ויאמרו איש אל אחיו; הנה בעל החלמות הלזה בא׃ <b>כ</b> ועתה לכו ונהרגהו ונשלכהו באחד הברות ואמרנו חיה רעה אכלתהו; ונראה מה יהיו חלמתיו׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק לז</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יא</b> ואקים מבניכם לנביאים ומבחוריכם לנזרים; האף אין זאת בני ישראל נאם ה׳׃ <b>יב</b> ותשקו את הנזרים יין; ועל הנביאים צויתם לאמר לא תנבאו׃</p> <footer class=source>עמוס פרק ב</footer></blockquote> And this was in fact Amos's personal experience: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>י</b> וישלח אמציה כהן בית אל אל ירבעם מלך ישראל לאמר; קשר עליך עמוס בקרב בית ישראל לא תוכל הארץ להכיל את כל דבריו׃ <b>יא</b> כי כה אמר עמוס בחרב ימות ירבעם; וישראל גלה יגלה מעל אדמתו׃ </p> <p><b>יב</b> ויאמר אמציה אל עמוס חזה לך ברח לך אל ארץ יהודה; ואכל שם לחם ושם תנבא׃ <b>יג</b> ובית אל לא תוסיף עוד להנבא; כי מקדש מלך הוא ובית ממלכה הוא׃ <b>יד</b> ויען עמוס ויאמר אל אמציה לא נביא אנכי ולא בן נביא אנכי; כי בוקר אנכי ובולס שקמים׃ <b>טו</b> ויקחני ה׳ מאחרי הצאן; ויאמר אלי ה׳ לך הנבא אל עמי ישראל׃ <b>טז</b> ועתה שמע דבר ה׳; אתה אמר לא תנבא על ישראל ולא תטיף על בית ישחק׃ <b>יז</b> לכן כה אמר ה׳ אשתך בעיר תזנה ובניך ובנתיך בחרב יפלו ואדמתך בחבל תחלק; ואתה על אדמה טמאה תמות וישראל גלה יגלה מעל אדמתו׃</p> <footer class=source>עמוס פרק ז</footer></blockquote> But both the history of Joseph that we see in the upcoming parshiot and Amos's own message show that the will of ה׳ cannot be suppressed: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ז</b> כי לא יעשה א־דני ה׳ דבר כי אם גלה סודו אל עבדיו הנביאים׃ <b>ח</b> אריה שאג מי לא יירא; א־דני ה׳ דבר מי לא ינבא׃</p> <footer class=source>עמוס פרק ג</footer></blockquote> <hr/> Coming back to the original theme of the injustice that the brothers did to Joseph, not only did it echo in the time of Amos, but it had repercussions throughout history: <blockquote lang=he><p>ואמר רבא בר מחסיא אמר רב חמא בר גוריא אמר רב; לעולם אל ישנה אדם בנו בין הבנים שבשביל משקל שני סלעים מילת שנתן יעקב ליוסף יותר משאר בניו--נתקנאו בו אחיו, ונתגלגל הדבר וירדו אבותינו למצרים. </p> <footer class=source>שבת י,ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>Reb Elchonon Wasserman <i lang=he>zt״l</i> takes this concept [מעשה אבות סימן לבנים] one step further. How did the <i lang=he>shevatim</i> explain Yosef's absence to Yaakov? They dipped his tunic--the special tunic that Yaakov made for him--in blood, and showed it to Yaakov, who then assumed that Yosef had been killed by a wild animal.</p> <p>By using blood to hide their behavior, says Reb Elchonon, the <i lang=he>shevatim</i> sealed the fate of <i lang=he>Klal Yisrael</i>. Their use of blood to deceive their father has caused us to suffer from deceitful blood libels until this very day</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Rabbi-Frand-Parashah-Insights-Observations/dp/142260571X/">Rabbi Yissocher Frand, <cite>Rabbi Frand on the Parashah 2</cite></a>, p. 76</footer></blockquote>
