Much of what I'm going to say comes from <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Unhistory-Conjectures-Factual-Foundations/dp/076530760X">Avram Davidson's <cite>Adventures in Unhistory</cite></a>. Davidson was a science fiction writer born in New York in 1923, frum for most of his life (in a <a href="http://forward.com/culture/10772/writing-in-four-dimensions/">biography</a>, the Forward said he discovered Eastern religions in the seventies and "is rumored to have relinquished his yarmulke after a stay in Japan"). He was a medic in Israel in 1948, then returned to the US in 1952. His writing was literary, full of long complicated sentences and sesquipedalian words, with a profoundly dry humor that I love. <cite>Adventures in Unhistory</cite> is nonfiction, a book of cryptozoology and the origin of various legends. <blockquote lang=en><p>Although the wombat is real and the dragon is not, nobody knows what a wombat looks like and everyone knows what a dragon looks like.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Unhistory-Conjectures-Factual-Foundations/dp/076530760X">Avram Davidson, <cite>Adventures in Unhistory</cite></a>, p. 207</footer></blockquote> <hr/> In the midst of the story of the birth of Jacob's children, there's a touching little vignette: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יד</b> וילך ראובן בימי קציר חטים וימצא דודאים בשדה ויבא אתם אל לאה אמו; ותאמר רחל אל לאה תני נא לי מדודאי בנך׃ <b>טו</b> ותאמר לה המעט קחתך את אישי ולקחת גם את דודאי בני; ותאמר רחל לכן ישכב עמך הלילה תחת דודאי בנך׃ <b>טז</b> ויבא יעקב מן השדה בערב ותצא לאה לקראתו ותאמר אלי תבוא כי שכר שכרתיך בדודאי בני; וישכב עמה בלילה הוא׃ <b>יז</b> וישמע אלקים אל לאה; ותהר ותלד ליעקב בן חמישי׃ <b>יח</b> ותאמר לאה נתן אלקים שכרי אשר נתתי שפחתי לאישי; ותקרא שמו יששכר׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק ל</footer></blockquote> Why is this--four-year-old Reuven brings flowers to his mother--important enough to mention? Why do Rachel and Leah care so much about them? And why do they become the very symbol of Reuven's tribe: <blockquote lang=he><p>סימנים היו לכל נשיא ונשיא, מפה וצבע על כל מפה ומפה...ראובן אבנו אודם ומפה שלו אדום ומצוייר עליו דודאים.</p> <footer class=source>מדרש רבה, במדבר ב:ו</footer></blockquote> What are דודאים? The word occurs only one other place in תנ״ך: <blockquote lang=he><p>הדודאים נתנו ריח ועל פתחינו כל מגדים חדשים גם ישנים; דודי צפנתי לך׃</p> <footer class=source>שיר השירים ז:יד</footer></blockquote> So we know they grow wild and have an odor. What else? <hr/> There are two major opinions (there's a third, based on a pasuk in ירמיהו, that they are figs. I will leave that one). Rashi says they are jasmine: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>דודאים</em>: סיגלי, עשב הוא ובלשון ישמעאל יסמי״ן.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית ל:יד </footer></blockquote> The targum and Ibn Ezra translate them as יברוחין, which is translated as "mandrake" ("a Mediterranean plant of the nightshade family, with white or purple flowers and large yellow berries."). And then the story gets interesting: <blockquote lang=he><p>דודאים אמר המתרגם יברוחין, וכן יקראו בלשון ישמעאל, ויש להם ריח טוב, וכן כתוב הדודאים נתנו ריח (שה״ש ז, יד), ו<em>הם על צורת בן אדם, כי יש להם דמות ראש וידים</em>. </p> <footer class=source>אבן עזרא, בראשית ל:יד </footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>דודאים: סיגלי (סנהדרין צט ב), ובלשון ישמעאל יאסמין. כך מצאתי בפירוש רש״י. ואינו כן, כי...אין זמנם בימי קציר חטים, אולי מצאם שם במקרה.</p> <p>והראוי לקבל בדודאים דעת אונקלוס שתרגם בהן יברוחין. וכתב רבי אברהם...והם על צורת בן אדם כי יש להן דמות ראש וידים. ויש אומרים כי יועילו להריון. ואנכי לא ידעתי, בעבור שתולדתם קרה, אלו דבריו.</p> <p>והנכון כי רצתה בהן להשתעשע ולהתענג בריחן, כי בתפלה נפקדה רחל לא בדרך הרפואות, וראובן הביא ענפי הדודאים או הפרי, והוא כדמות תפוחים, ולהם ריח טוב, אבל השרש, והוא העשוי בצורת ראש וידים, לא הביא.<p> <p>והשרש הוא שאומרים עליו האנשים שיועיל להריון. ואם הדבר אמת, הוא בסגולה בהם, לא בטבעם. אבל לא ראיתי כן באחד מספרי הרפואות המדברים בהם.</p> <footer class=source>רמב״ן, בראשית ל:יד</footer></blockquote> The Septuagint also translates it as mandrake (mandragora): <blockquote lang=el><p>...Ρουβην...εὑρεν μῆλα μανδραγόρου</p> <p>...Reuben...found apples of mandrake</p> <footer class=source>Septuagint, Genesis 30:14</footer></blockquote> So mandrakes have roots shaped like a person, and they have a reputation for being good for helping women get pregnant. Ramban says the pregnancy thing can't be the reason Reuven brought them, since he didn't bring the root (we'll see one reason why not later), and it's the root that helps with pregnancy. But Ramban, a physician, doesn't think that's true either. I have to disagree that Rachel and Leah wanted them להשתעשע ולהתענג בריחן, since the context is all about getting pregnant: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ותרא רחל כי לא ילדה ליעקב ותקנא רחל באחתה; ותאמר אל יעקב הבה לי בנים ואם אין מתה אנכי׃ <b>ב</b> ויחר אף יעקב ברחל; ויאמר התחת אלקים אנכי אשר מנע ממך פרי בטן׃ <b>ג</b> ותאמר הנה אמתי בלהה בא אליה; ותלד על ברכי ואבנה גם אנכי ממנה׃</p> ... <b>ט</b> ותרא לאה כי עמדה מלדת; ותקח את זלפה שפחתה ותתן אתה ליעקב לאשה׃ <footer class=source>בראשית פרק ל</footer></blockquote> So I understand why they would argue about a pregnancy-inducing root. <hr/> So where does this "man-shaped" root come from? <blockquote lang=en><p>Most commentators consider dudaim to be mandrakes (Mandragora officinarum), a plant with a short stem, large leaves, pale blue or velvet flowers which yield round, succulent, orange to red berries. Mandrake has a long taproot, appearing as a parsnip but which may bifurcate, causing it to resemble a human figure. </p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.yutorah.org/lectures/lecture.cfm/747623/dr-harvey-babich/chanukah-and-dudaim/">Dr. Harvey Babich, <cite>Chanukah and Dudaim</cite></a></footer></blockquote> The mandrake as a cure for infertility was well known from ancient times and into modernity: <blockquote lang=en><p>Go and catch a falling star, <br/> Get with child a mandrake root, </p> <footer class=source><a href="https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems-and-poets/poems/detail/44127">John Donne, <cite>Song</cite></a></footer></blockquote> (It's worth noting that Donne here is sarcastic; you can't catch a falling star and you really can't get with child from mandrakes. But the legend exists enough for people to get the reference.) <blockquote lang=en><p>Those roots which resemble the human form which certain impostors and rogues bear about for sale to deceive infertile women are artificially made from the roots of seeds, briony and other plants. They carve out those while still growing, planting in them grains of barley or millet in those place in which they wish hairs to grow [and plant them back in the ground]. They dig them out at last...</p> <p>These false mandrakes be palmed off on childless women, some of whom gave him as much as 5, 20 or even 50 gold pieces to become joyful mothers of children...</p> <footer class=source>Andrea Methioli, 16th century physician, quoted in <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Unhistory-Conjectures-Factual-Foundations/dp/076530760X">Avram Davidson, <cite>Adventures in Unhistory</cite></a>, p. 77</footer></blockquote> There's one other legend of the mandrakes: you can't pick them: <blockquote lang=en><p>"Excellent. Ten points to Gryffindor," said Professor Sprout. "The Mandrake forms an essential part of most antidotes. It is also, however, dangerous. Who can tell me why?"</p> <p>Hermione's hand narrowly missed Harry's glasses as it shot up again.</p> <p>"The cry of the Mandrake is fatal to anyone who hears it," she said promptly.</p> <footer class=source>J. Rowling, <cite>Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets</cite></footer></blockquote> And that figures into a midrash: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>יששכר חמור גרם</em>: אל תיקרי גרם אלא גרם, שהלך ראובן בשדה ומצא דודאים, ולא היה יודע מה הם, והלך ואסר חמורו בדודאים והלך לו, מה עשה החמור רצה לברוח ונעקרו הדודאים וצעקו צעקה גדולה, ומת החמור, כי כן דרך הדודאים, וכשבא ראובן אצל חמורו וראהו מת, הבין שהיו דודאים, ולקחם ונתנם לאמו לאה, ונולד יששכר, ואותו החמור שהוציא הדודאים גרם ליששכר שנולד...</p> <footer class=source>מדרש אגדה, בראשית מט יד</footer></blockquote> Taken less literally, יששכר really was the reward for Reuven's mandrakes: <blockquote lang=he><p>אמר רבי לוי בא וראה מה יפה היתה סרסרותן של דודאים לפני מי שאמר והיה העולם, שעל ידי הדודאים עמדו שני שבטים גדולים בישראל, יששכר וזבולון, יששכר יושב ועוסק בתורה, וזבולון יוצא בימים ובא ונותן לתוך פיו של יששכר, והתורה רבה בישראל, והדודאים נתנו ריח.</p> <footer class=source>בראשית רבה עב:ד</footer></blockquote> <hr/> In reality, as Ramban noted, mandrakes don't help with fertility (and the man-shape thing is clearly exaggerated). But they are medically useful: "Mandrake" is from the Sanskrit <i lang=sa>mandros agora</i>, "sleep stuff". <blockquote lang=en><p> Not poppy nor mandragora <br/> Nor all the drowsy syrups of the world,<br/> Shall ever medicine thee to that sweet sleep<br/> Which thou owedst yesterday.</p> <footer class=source>Iago to Othello; Shakespeare, <cite>Othello</cite>, Act 3, Scene 3 </footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>[The mandrake] being put up ye seat for a suppository it causeth sleep...that be given of it...to such as shall be cut or cauterized...For they do not apprehend the pain because the be overborn with dead sleep, but the apples being smelled to or eaten are soporiferous and ye juice that is of them. But used too much they make man speechless.</p> <footer class=source>Dioscorides, 1st century physician, quoted in <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Unhistory-Conjectures-Factual-Foundations/dp/076530760X">Avram Davidson, <cite>Adventures in Unhistory</cite></a>, p. 71</footer></blockquote> So mandrakes were used for anesthesia. And it turns out that they actually are full of pharmacologically active alkaloids (like most of the nightshade plants) including hyoscyamine (Levsin) and scopalomine (Transderm Scop). Basically it acts like Benadryl, making you sleepy, less itchy but overdosing causes hallucinations, hysteria and death. So Davidson hypothesizes that the shrieking of the mandrake root wasn't the plant, it was the shrieking and dying is of the animal (or person) overdosing on the drug. And the fertility thing? One common use for a mild anesthetic is, of course, childbirth. So "good for childbirth" in the ספרי הרפואות המדברים בהם becomes "good for having children" in the popular imagination, with the magical thinking that a root that looks like a little person must be good for making little people. <blockquote lang=en><p>I was born in 1923 in Yonkers Homeopathic Hospital. I used to wonder what the homeopathic method of parturition might have been...a system of semi-anesthesia was in fashion, called "twilight sleep". The basis of this was the drug morphine, derived from the opium poppy, and the drug scopalomine--obtainable, to be sure, from other sources, but obtainable nonetheless from mandragora. I never asked my Mother; and now it is too late; but it is certainly possible that I came into the world under, so to speak, the auspices of the mandrake.</p> <p>Which might explain and awful lot.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Unhistory-Conjectures-Factual-Foundations/dp/076530760X">Avram Davidson, <cite>Adventures in Unhistory</cite></a>, p. 82</footer></blockquote> <hr/> So that would explain Rachel's eagerness for the דודאים. But why should they be the symbol of Reuven himself? I don't have an answer, but I think it's a two-steps-removed symbol of something else. The Artscroll Chumash cites the Ohr Hachaim (I can't find the original): <blockquote lang=en><p><i lang=he>Ohr HaChaim</i> comments that, by so doing, Reuben displayed his unselfish devotion to his mother. Normally, a child as young as Reuben, who was only a few years old, would not want more siblings in the household, but he put his mother's happiness ahead of his own. He showed the same filial devotion when he moved Jacob's bed into Leah's tent.</p> <footer class=source>Artscroll Chumash, comment to Vayeitzei 30:14</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ויהי בשכן ישראל בארץ ההוא וילך ראובן וישכב את בלהה פילגש אביו וישמע ישראל; <br/> ויהיו בני יעקב שנים עשר׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית לה:כב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>וישכב</em>: מתוך שבלבל משכבו מעלה עליו הכתוב כאלו שכבה. ולמה בלבל וחלל יצועיו? שכשמתה רחל נטל יעקב מטתו שהיתה נתונה תדיר באהל רחל ולא בשאר אהלים ונתנה באהל בלהה, בא ראובן ותבע עלבון אמו, אמר אם אחות אמי היתה צרה לאמי, שפחת אחות אמי תהא צרה לאמי, לכן בלבל.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם </footer></blockquote> You wouldn't put a bed on the flag, so the דודאים serve to symbolize Reuven's devotion. And more than that; the Bilhah incident was seen as a turning point in Reuven's life, and he became a paragon of תשובה: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>וישב ראובן אל הבור</em>: והיכן היה...רבי אליעזר אומר בשקו ובתעניתו, כשנפנה הלך והציץ לאותו בור. הה״ד וישב ראובן אל הבור. אמר לו הקדוש ברוך הוא מעולם לא חטא אדם לפני ועשה תשובה ואתה פתחת בתשובה תחלה </p> <footer class=source>בראשית רבה (וילנא) פרשת וישב פרשה פד סימן יט </footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>Reuven was the first to repent without being confronted and chastised by Hashem, as Adam and Cain were before they repented. His teshuva was not from fear, but was the first repentance from love.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://torahweb.org/torah/2004/parsha/rwil_vayeshev.html">Rabbi Mordechai Willig, <cite>Reuven's Teshuva: A Model for Life-Long Growth</cite></a></footer></blockquote> So the דודאים represent Reuven's lesson to us in the power of devotion and repentance.
