This is a re-presentation of <//פרשת ויחי תשע״ט> and is taken almost entirely from Rabbi Yitchak Etshalom's <a href="https://torah.org/torah-portion/mikra-5775-vayechi/"><cite>Ad Ki Yavo Shilo: A Proposal to the Riddle of Judah's Blessing</cite></a> and Rav Yakov Medan's <a href="https://www.etzion.org.il/en/tanakh/torah/sefer-bereishit/parashat-vayetze/vayetze-beit-el"><cite>Beit-El</cite></a>. This is the parasha of ברכת יעקב, as he looks to the אחרית הימים, what we've often called "the End of History": {:he} >ויקרא יעקב אל בניו; ויאמר האספו ואגידה לכם את אשר יקרא אתכם באחרית הימים׃ --בראשית מט:א And part of that is the ברכה for Yehudah: {:he .lines} ><b>ח</b> יהודה אתה יודוך אחיך ידך בערף איביך; ישתחוו לך בני אביך׃ <b>ט</b> גור אריה יהודה מטרף בני עלית; כרע רבץ כאריה וכלביא מי יקימנו׃ <b>י</b> לא יסור שבט מיהודה ומחקק מבין רגליו עד כי יבא שילה ולו יקהת עמים׃ --בראשית פרק מט יקה is a poetic term for "gathering". {:he} >עין תלעג לאב ותבוז ליקהת אם; יקרוה עֹרְבֵי־נחל ויאכלוה בני נשר׃ --משלי ל:יז So that last phrase is (according to King James), "until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be". Who is שילה and where is he coming? And why is Yehudah the ruler עד then? The gemara says שילה is the name of the ultimate ruler of Israel, what we now call משיח: <blockquote lang=he><p>למשיח, מה שמו? דבי רבי שילא אמרי: ”שילה“ שמו שנאמר (בראשית מט) עד כי יבא שילה.</p> <footer class=source>סנהדרין צח,ב</footer></blockquote> Artscroll similarly translates this as "until Shiloh arrives". The assumption thoughout is that עד means what the Halacha calls "עד ועד בכלל". It's not that Yehudah's rule ends כי יבא שילה, but that it continues and develops עד כי יבא שילה, and that (whatever "that" is) is the אחרית הימים, the culmination of human history. But still, where does שילה comes from? What does it mean? Onkelos understands it as a poetic form of שֶׁלוֹ, "his"; "Yehudah will rule until he gets what is rightfully his": {:he} >לא יעדי עביד שולטן מדבית יהודה וספרא מבני בנוהי עד עלמא; עד דייתי משיחא ד*דיליה* היא מלכותא וליה ישתמעון עממיא. --תרגום אונקלוס, בראשית מט:י Sforno understands it as a poetic portmanteau of two words, שׁוּל, "margin", and שַׁלוָה, "peace": {:he} ><em>עד כי יבא שילה</em>: הנה תיבת שילה מורכבת משרש שול ומורה ”שולים“ ומשרש שול המורה ”שלום“; כלומר שלום הסוף. --ספורנו, בראשית מט:י Similarly, Aryeh Kaplan's _Living Torah_ translates this as "the final tranquility ". But שילה is more familiar as a place name, where the משכן was set up after the conquest of כנען.‎ עד כי יבא שילה then means "until he comes to Shiloh", with לו יקהת עמים referring to the twelve tribes (who are often called עמים). The question then is, who is "he"? Ibn Ezra proposes that it is a prophecy of the *start* of the Davidic dynasty: {:he} >ויש מי שפירש אותו על עיר שילה, ויפרש יבוא כמו (ויקרא כב:ז) וּבָא הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ, או עד כי יבוא [קץ] שילה, כי כן כתוב (תהילים עח:ס,ע) וַיִּטֹּשׁ מִשְׁכַּן שִׁלוֹ...וַיִּבְחַר בְּדָוִד עַבְדּוֹ. גם זה איננו רחוק. --אבן עזרא, בראשית מט:י Or the end of it: {:he} ><em>עד כי יבא שילה</em>: כי אז נחלקה מלכות בית דוד ונתנה לירבעם מלכות עשרת השבטים וזהו...”עד כי יבא שילה“ אחיה השילוני שהיה משילה שקרע בגדי רחבעם לי״ב קרעים. --חזקוני, בראשית מט:י Rabbi Etshalom (based on Rav Medan) feels neither of these fit the "אחרית הימים" sense of these ברכות. So he tries to understand the city of שילה: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויקהלו כל עדת בני ישראל שלה וישכינו שם את אהל מועד; והארץ נכבשה לפניהם׃</p> <footer class=source>יהושוע יח:א</footer></blockquote> Why Shiloh? Where is Shiloh? It's never been mentioned before in תנ״ך (except earlier in יהושוע as a city in the tribal lands of אפרים). Rav Medan's <a href="https://etzion.org.il/en/beit-el">insight</a> is that there is a previous "משכן" in Jewish history: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יח</b> וישכם יעקב בבקר ויקח את האבן אשר שם מראשתיו וישם אתה מצבה; ויצק שמן על ראשה׃ <b>יט</b> ויקרא את שם המקום ההוא בית אל; ואולם לוז שם העיר לראשנה׃ <b>כ</b> וידר יעקב נדר לאמר; אם יהיה אלקים עמדי ושמרני בדרך הזה אשר אנכי הולך ונתן לי לחם לאכל ובגד ללבש׃ <b>כא</b> ושבתי בשלום אל בית אבי; והיה ה׳ לי לאלקים׃ <b>כב</b> <em>והאבן הזאת אשר שמתי מצבה יהיה בית אלקים</em>; וכל אשר תתן לי עשר אעשרנו לך׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק כח</footer></blockquote> Notice that Yaakov isn't sleeping in the city of לוז; he's somewhere on the outskirts of town. <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויאמר אלקים אל יעקב קום עלה בית אל ושב שם; ועשה שם מזבח לא־ל הנראה אליך בברחך מפני עשו אחיך׃...<b>ו</b> ויבא יעקב לוזה אשר בארץ כנען הוא בית אל; הוא וכל העם אשר עמו׃ <b>ז</b> ויבן שם מזבח ויקרא למקום א־ל בית אל; כי שם נגלו אליו האלקים בברחו מפני אחיו׃ <footer class=source>בראשית פרק לה</footer></blockquote> He builds a מזבח but not his promised בית אלקים. What happens to בית אל? Does Yaakov ever build his בית אלקים? There is one mention of בית אל as the site of the משכן: {:he} ><b>כו</b> ויעלו כל בני ישראל וכל העם *ויבאו בית אל* ויבכו וישבו שם לפני ה׳ ויצומו ביום ההוא עד הערב; ויעלו עלות ושלמים לפני ה׳׃ <b>כז</b> וישאלו בני ישראל בה׳; *ושם ארון ברית האלקים בימים ההם*׃ --שופטים פרק כ But that "בית אל" is assumed to be the משכן in שילה, which is a different place from בית אל: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>יבאו בית אל</em>: הנראה בעיני כי על שילה אמר כי שם היה הארון ונקרא בית א־ל ובית ה׳.</p> <footer class=source>רד״ק, שופטים כ:כו </footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ויאמרו הנה חג ה׳ בשלו מימים ימימה אשר מצפונה לבית אל מזרחה השמש למסלה העלה מבית אל שכמה ומנגב ללבונה׃</p> <footer class=source>שופטים כא:יט </footer></blockquote> Beit El today is about 16 kilometers south of modern Shiloh, but Rav Medan assumes that we have the locations wrong: <blockquote lang=en><p>Perhaps we may locate it north of Beit-El today, in the mountains overlooking the settlement of Shilo from the south...We assume that Yaakov's Beit-El is related to and anchored in the sanctity of Shilo in later generations.</p> <footer class=source>Rav Yaakov Medan, <a href="https://www.etzion.org.il/en/tanakh/torah/sefer-bereishit/parashat-vayetze/vayetze-beit-el"><cite>Beit-El</cite></a></footer></blockquote> Yaakov's מצבה and later מזבח were outside the city of לוז. That holy place, the actual בית א־ל, is where Yehoshua would build the משכן. Similarly, Avraham built a מזבח outside the city that would later be called Beit El. {:he} >ויעתק משם ההרה מקדם לבית אל ויט אהלה; בית אל מים והעי מקדם ויבן שם מזבח לה׳ ויקרא בשם ה׳׃ --בראשית יב:ח The city would get the name בית אל by association. The "Temple district", northeast of the city, would be called שילה, presumably from Sforno's sense of שלוה, like all the contemporary synagogues called "Beth Sholom". In Rav Medan's model, Yehoshua builds the משכן in the place that Yaakov built his מצבה, fulfilling Yaakov's והאבן הזאת אשר שמתי מצבה יהיה בית אלקים. Rabbi Etshalom proposes, in order to understand עד כי יבא שילה, that it was *Yaakov* who named the place שילה.‎ ברכת יעקב in this parasha is Yaakov's vision of the future of his descendants, not a נבואה but a plan. He knows of two נבואות of what lies ahead: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יג</b> ויאמר לאברם ידע תדע כי גר יהיה זרעך בארץ לא להם ועבדום וענו אתם ארבע מאות שנה׃ <b>יד</b> וגם את הגוי אשר יעבדו דן אנכי; ואחרי כן יצאו ברכש גדול׃ ...<b>טז</b> ודור רביעי ישובו הנה; כי לא שלם עון האמרי עד הנה׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק טו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ג</b> ויאמר אנכי הא־ל אלקי אביך; אל תירא מרדה מצרימה כי לגוי גדול אשימך שם׃ <b>ד</b> אנכי ארד עמך מצרימה ואנכי אעלך גם עלה; ויוסף ישית ידו על עיניך׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק מו</footer></blockquote> Yehudah would be the leader through the darkness of גלות, and continue to lead them as they return to the Holy Land and finally build the בית אלקים that Yaakov had planned all those years ago. <blockquote lang=en><p> The vision was to establish a national “hub” at Shiloh, picking up off of the mission and the path taken by its first commander, and to have all of the families of Jacob view it as the hub of their national wheel, the center that defines the perimeter.</p> <footer class=source>Rabbi Yitchak Etshalom, <a href="https://torah.org/torah-portion/mikra-5775-vayechi/"><cite>Ad Ki Yavo Shilo: A Proposal to the Riddle of Judah's Blessing</cite></a></footer></blockquote> The בית המקדש and the political center of the country was to be in a single, central location, called בית אל. It's the role that, centuries later, שמואל and דוד would assign to Jerusalem. Rabbi Etshalom (following Rav Medan) sees עד כי יבא שילה as an endpoint: <blockquote lang=en><p><i lang=he>Ad ki yavo Shiloh</i>--this is to be Judah’s position until the national spiritual hub is established at Shiloh; the inauguration of a solid foundation of the Tabernacle demonstrates that the “era of the tent of dwelling” is over and the people will have turned a new page to an era of tribal identity oriented towards a common middle. Jacob is simultaneously willing his sons to establish that national hub at Shiloh--as per above--but at the same time directing them that once that has become a “fact on the ground”, there is no need for a single leader among the brothers. It will be time for each tribe to find their own leaders and council of elders...</p> <footer class=source>Rabbi Yitchak Etshalom,<a href="https://torah.org/torah-portion/mikra-5775-vayechi/"><cite>Ad Ki Yavo Shilo: A Proposal to the Riddle of Judah's Blessing</cite></a></footer></blockquote> I would strongly disagree. Yaakov's vision of Yehudah--what we would now call מלכות בית דוד--is to inaugurate the אחרית הימים, but not end there. עד כי יבא שילה‎--עד ועד בכלל. בני ישראל would leave Egypt and settle the land under Yehudah's leadership in peace and prosperity forever more. {:he} >וישב יהודה וישראל לבטח איש תחת גפנו ותחת תאנתו מדן ועד באר שבע כל ימי שלמה׃ --מלכים א ה:ה
