This week's parsha has the ברכות that Yaakov gives his sons. {:he} > נפתלי אילה שלחה הנתן אמרי שפר׃ --בראשית מט:כא >Naphtali is a hind let loose who delivers beautiful sayings. --Artscroll Chumash, Bereishis 49:21 I like this, because it illustrates the difference between פשט and משמעות;‎ פשט doesn't mean "literal meaning"; it means "the meaning that a careful reader who knows poetics and rhetoric would understand, without the תורה שבעל פה". If we miss that, we end up with Anita Diamant's reading, that Yaakov was just senile: >"At first he did not know me," my brother said... > "He named each of my brothers in turn, blessing them and cursing them, turning them into animals..." > "How horrid to grow old like that," said Joseph with pity and disgust in his voice. What is the tenor? >_The Philosophy of Rhetoric_ (1936) by rhetorician I. A. Richards describes a metaphor as having two parts: the tenor and the vehicle. The tenor is the subject to which attributes are ascribed. The vehicle is the object whose attributes are borrowed. In ["All the world's a stage"], "the world" is compared to a stage, describing it with the attributes of "the stage"; "the world" is the tenor, and "a stage" is the vehicle... --Wikipedia, [_Metaphor_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaphor) In Hebrew, we have the terms משל and נמשל. I would call them "metaphor" and "metaphee", but no one listens to me. So what is the נמשל of אילה שלחה, an ibex running free? Rashi gives a few possibilities: {:he} ><em>אילה שלחה</em>: זו בקעת גינוסר שהיא קלה לבשל פרותיה כאילה זו שהיא קלה לרוץ... > <em>הנתן אמרי שפר</em>: כתרגומו. --רש״י, בראשית מט:כא {:he} >נַפְתָּלִי בְּאַרַע טָבָא יִתְרְמֵי עַדְבֵיהּ וְאַחֲסַנְתֵּיהּ תְּהֵי מְעַבְּדָא פֵירִין יְהוֹן מוֹדַן וּמְבָרְכִין עֲלֵיהוֹן׃ --תרגום אונקלוס, בראשית מט:כא {:he} >ד"א על מלחמת סיסרא נתנבא (שופטים ד:ו): [וַתִּשְׁלַח וַתִּקְרָא לְבָרָק בֶּן אֲבִינֹעַם מִקֶּדֶשׁ נַפְתָּלִי וַתֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו הֲלֹא צִוָּה  ה׳ אֱלֹקֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵךְ וּמָשַׁכְתָּ בְּהַר תָּבוֹר] וְלָקַחְתָּ עִמְּךָ עֲשֶׂרֶת אֲלָפִים אִישׁ מִבְּנֵי נַפְתָּלִי... > <em>הנתן אמרי שפר</em>: על ידם שרו דבורה וברק שירה. --רש״י, בראשית מט:כא These two possible tenors, נמשלים, of the משל reflect the two-fold nature of ברכות יעקב in this parsha: a vision of the land of Israel and a vision of the people of Israel, and it would be interesting to see how that hermeneutic dynamic plays out through the parsha. ---- But people wanted to talk about Esav's head. Fine. {:he} >ורבותינו דרשוהו על יום קבורת יעקב כשערער עשו על המערה, במסכת סוטה. --רש״י, בראשית מט:כא Rashi's wording seems to imply that he doesn't want to talk about it either. The gemara takes the pasuk more literally, that Naphali was a fast runner: {:he} > כיון שהגיעו למערת המכפלה, אתא עשו קא מעכב. אמר להן (בראשית לה:כז): מַמְרֵא קִרְיַת הָאַרְבַּע הִוא חֶבְרוֹן, ואמר רבי יצחק: קרית ארבע--ארבע זוגות היו: אדם וחוה, אברהם ושרה, יצחק ורבקה, יעקב ולאה. איהו קברה ללאה בדידיה, והאי דפייש--דידי הוא. > אמרו ליה: זבינתה. אמר להו: נהי דזביני בכירותא, פשיטותא מי זביני? אמרו ליה: אין, דכתיב (בראשית נ:ה): בְּקִבְרִי אֲשֶׁר כָּרִיתִי לִי [בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן], ואמר רבי יוחנן משום רבי שמעון בן יהוצדק: אין ”כירה“ אלא לשון מכירה, שכן בכרכי הים קורין למכירה ”כירה“. --סוטה יג,א That use of the word appears in תנ״ך: {:he} >ואכרה לי בחמשה עשר כסף; וחמר שערים ולתך שערים׃ --הושע ג:ב We talked [last time](prev) about Yaakov's purchase of מערת המכפלה: {:he} ><em>[ויקחו את מקניהם ואת רכושם] אשר רכשו בארץ כנען</em>: אבל מה שרכש בפדן ארם נתן הכל לעשו בשביל חלקו במערת המכפלה... --רש"י, בראשית מו:ו The story continues: {:he} >אמר להו: הבו לי איגרתא! אמרו ליה: איגרתא בארעא דמצרים היא. ומאן ניזיל? ניזיל נפתלי דקליל כי איילתא, דכתיב: נַפְתָּלִי אַיָּלָה שְׁלֻחָה הַנֹּתֵן אִמְרֵי שָׁפֶר. אמר רבי אבהו: אל תקרי ”אמרי שפר“, אלא ”אמרי ספר“. > חושים בריה דדן תמן הוה, ויקירן ליה אודניה. אמר להו: מאי האי? ואמרו ליה: קא מעכב האי עד דאתי נפתלי מארעא דמצרים. אמר להו: ועד דאתי נפתלי מארעא דמצרים, יהא אבי אבא מוטל בבזיון? שקל קולפא, מחייה ארישיה, נתרן עיניה ונפלו אכרעא דיעקב, פתחינהו יעקב לעיניה ואחיך. והיינו דכתיב (תהלים נח:יא) יִשְׂמַח צַדִּיק כִּי חָזָה נָקָם; פְּעָמָיו יִרְחַץ בְּדַם הָרָשָׁע. > באותה שעה נתקיימה נבואתה של רבקה, דכתיב: ״למה אשכל גם שניכם יום אחד״. ואף על גב דמיתתן לא ביום אחד הואי, קבורתן מיהא ביום אחד הואי. --סוטה יג,א Nothing here about Esav's head. Nonetheless, there is a chamber in מערת המכפלה that is known as the Tomb of Esau's Head. So that must have come from somewhere. Unfortunately, the "somewhere" may be the Muslims: >The Tomb of Machpela is arguably the oldest still-standing structure in the world being used for the same purpose for which it was built. However even ancient structures have received additions and renovations. One of these is an area which is called the Tomb of Joseph by Muslims, but may as well be the Tomb of Esau's head, or maybe simply an extra room constructed during the post-Crusader/early Muslim era.... >The tradition that Jacob's twin brother Esau, or at least his head, is buried in Hebron has its source in Midrash and was even quoted by a Muslim historian, Al-Suyuti in 1470. Today an embroidered wall hanging quotes the Hebrew text from the Midrash explaining the story. --[_Tomb of Esau's Head_](http://en.hebron.org.il/history/973) >Then the sons of Jacob met together, and also Esau and his brethren, and they said, "Let us leave the entrance of the cavern open, so that when any die he may be buried therein." But afterwards a dispute arose among them, and one of the brothers of Esau--or, as some say, one of the sons of Jacob--raised his hand and struck Esau a blow that caused his head to fall off, and it rolled into the cave. And they carried away his body and buried it without the head, for the head remained within the cave. --Islamic historian Ibn 'Asakir (1106–1175), cited in G. LeStrange (1890) [_Palestine Under the Moslems_](https://archive.org/details/palestineundermo00lest/page/324/mode/1up) I found one mention of Esav's head, in a medieval midrashic compilation called ספר הישר. It is of uncertain provenance; Ramban mentions it but questions it (רמב״ן, בראשית לד:יג: ואם נאמין בספר מלחמות בני יעקב (הוא ספר הישר)). {:he} >וחושים היה אילם מדבר וחרש משמוע...ויחר אפו מאוד עליהם. וימהר ויקח חרב וירץ אל עשו אל תוך המלחמה, ויך את עשו בחרב ויכרות את ראשו ממנו ותלך למרחוק, ויפול עשו בתוך אנשי המלחמה. --ספר הישר (מדרש), ספר בראשית, ויחי But nothing about the head being buried there. ---- Now, lots of contemporary commentators (including Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz and the Lubavitcher Rebbe) use the idea of Esav's head being buried in מערת המכפלה homeletically, but what do *I* do with that? Better, what does Rashi want me to do with that? Note that he brings this aggadah not as part of the burial of Yaakov, but in interpreting the ברכה of Naphali. {:he} >ואני לא באתי אלא לפשוטו של מקרא ולאגדה המיישבת דברי המקרא דבר דבור על אופניו. --רש״י, בראשית ג:ח ד״ה ישמעו What does it mean to be a fast runner? Hirsh looks at the ברכות representing each tribe's unique strength. >[W]hat one entrusts Naphtali to do, will be speedily carried out. Naphtali does not act on his own initiative, is not self-productive, but what others have decided for the benefit of the community he quickly adopts and quickly carries out... > Neither for deed nor for thought is Naphtali original. But he knows how to adopt the thoughts of others happily both for deed and speech, knows how to carry them out speedily and present them beautifully. --Hirsch Chumash, Genesis XLIX:21 This אילה is not running free, it is שלוחה, sent on a mission. That is what Naphtali represents, the concept of having a job and doing it. It is the concept of זריזות. {:he} >וענינו של הזריזות מבאר, שהוא ההקדמה למצות ולהשלמת ענינם. וכלשון הזה אמרו זכרונם לברכה (פסחים ד,א): זְרִיזִים מַקְדִּימִים לַמִּצְוֹת... > כללו של דבר, חזוק גדול צריך האדם להתחזק ולהתגבר בזריזות לעשות המצות, בהשליכו מעליו כבד העצלה המעכבת על ידו. --מסילת ישרים ו {:he} >יהודה בן תימא אומר: הוי עז כנמר, וקל כנשר, ורץ כצבי, וגבור כארי לעשות רצון אביך שבשמים. --משנה אבות ה:כ {:he} ><em>ורץ כצבי</em>: לרדוף אחר המצות. --פירוש רבי עובדיה מברטנורא, משנה אבות ה:כ And to add a subtle point about the aggadah: Naphtali *fails*. He doesn't get back in time to prevent bloodshed. But still, there are times when we have to fulfill our responsibilities, even when we don't know if we will succeed. And that is the message of נפתלי אילה שלחה.
