Today is אחרון של פסח. They're all allusions to saying Hallel: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> הודו לה׳ כי טוב; כי לעולם חסדו׃<br/> <b>ב</b> יאמר נא ישראל; כי לעולם חסדו׃<br/> <b>ג</b> יאמרו נא בית אהרן; כי לעולם חסדו׃<br/> <b>ד</b> יאמרו נא יראי ה׳; כי לעולם חסדו׃<br/> ...<b>יד</b> עזי וזמרת י־ה; ויהי לי לישועה׃<br/> ...<b>יט</b> פתחו לי שערי צדק; אבא בם אודה י־ה׃<br/> <b>כ</b> זה השער לה׳; צדיקים יבאו בו׃<br/> <b>כא</b> אודך כי עניתני; ותהי לי לישועה׃<br/> ...<b>כה</b> אנא ה׳ הושיעה נא; אנא ה׳ הצליחה נא׃<br/> ...<b>כט</b> הודו לה׳ כי טוב; כי לעולם חסדו׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק קיח</footer></blockquote> ישעיהו is telling us that on the day of that future redemption, we will sing Hallel. <hr/> The irony is that of all the יומים טובים, the last day of פסח is the only one on which we <em>don't</em> say Hallel now: <blockquote lang=he><p>אמר רבי יוחנן משום רבי שמעון בן יהוצדק: שמונה עשר ימים שהיחיד גומר בהן את ההלל: שמונה ימי החג ושמונה ימי חנוכה ויום טוב הראשון של פסח ויום טוב של עצרת; ובגולה עשרים ואחד...מאי שנא בחג דאמרינן כל יומא ומאי שנא בפסח דלא אמרינן כל יומא? דחג חלוקין בקרבנותיהן; דפסח אין חלוקין בקרבנותיהן.</p> <footer class=source>ערכין י,א-ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>The answer given in the Talmud is that after the first day of Passover, the Mussaf sacrifices are identical each day, while on Sukkot a unique Mussaf sacrifice is offered each day. The Mussaf sacrifices are indicative of the character of the Yom Tov. By mandating the same sacrifice for each day of Pesach, the Torah is teaching us that the character of each day remains the same throughout the Yom Tov. However, the varied sacrifices of Sukkot reveal to us that each day of the holiday is different from the others. In the future, it will be. <blockquote lang=he><p>לאור זאת היה מקום לומר, שיש לברך ”שהחיינו“ בשביעי של פסח, שהרי החג הזה מציין את הגאולה העתידה...אלא שאי־אפשר לברך ”שהחיינו“ על הגאולה העתידה, כי ברכה זו מברכים רק על ”שמחת לבב“ שכבר יש לאדם בפועל, ואילו הגאולה השלמה עדיין לא באה...</p> <footer class=source>רב מנחם מנדל שניאורסון, לקוטי שיחות כרך לז, עמ׳ 14</footer></blockquote> <hr/> With that as an introduction, I want to look at the last פרק of Hallel, and the odd way we repeat the last 9 psukim: <blockquote lang=he><p>מקום שנהגו לכפול, יכפול; לפשוט, יפשוט. לברך אחריו, יברך. הכול כמנהג המדינה.</p> <footer class=source>משנה סוכה ג:יא</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>מקום שנהגו לכפול</em>: כל פסוק ופסוק מאודך ולמטה עד סוף ההלל כופלים, לפי שכל אותו הפרק מהודו לה' כי טוב עד אודך כי עניתני כולו כפול במקרא, ומאודך ולמטה אינו כפול, לכך נהגו לכפול המקראות הללו.</p> <footer class=source>פירוש רבי עובדיה מברטנורא, שם</footer></blockquote> But that's not really right: אנא ה׳ הושיעה נא; אנא ה׳ הצליחה נא is one pasuk and it certainly looks parallel. And what's worse, is that not only we repeat the words, we split up the pasuk in order to do that. And that is wrong: <blockquote lang=he><p>כל פסוקא דלא פסקיה משה אנן לא פסקינן ליה.</p> <footer class=source>מגילה כב,א</footer></blockquote> <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxbAHWl8KioheGlyOWE1QTY3Wmc/view?usp=sharing">Mordy Goldenberg's shiur</a> for the Amud-a-week program deals with many of these sorts of issues, but a simple answer is brought by the חתם סופר: <blockquote lang=he><p>.היכא דאיכא אתנחתא או זקף קטן שפיר דמי.</p> <footer class=source>שו״ת חתם סופר חלק א (אורח חיים) סימן י</footer></blockquote> The אתנחתא allows us to split up the pasuk, but doesn't force us to. The מנהג that has developed in how we say Hallel treats the two halves of the pasuk as separate psukim, and not even parallel to each other. <hr/> Another point about אנא ה׳ הושיעה נא; אנא ה׳ הצליחה נא: If you look carefully at the way it is printed in the siddur, there is a difference between הושיעה and הצליחה: There's a little line next to the חיריק under the ש of הושיעה: <blockquote lang=he><p>אָנָּא ה׳ הוֹשִֽׁיעָה נָּא אָנָּא ה׳ הַצְלִיחָה נָא.</p> <footer class=source>Artscroll Siddur, p 640</footer></blockquote> That's intentional. Most words in Hebrew have the stress on the ultimate, last syllable. משה is mo-SHEH, not MO-sheh. Some words have the stress on the penultimate, second-to-last, syllable: ויאמר is va-YO-mer, not va-yo-MER. Those are the only two choices. The Artscroll (and many other siddurim) assume ultimate stress, called מלרע, and indicate the penultimate stress, מלעיל, with the little line, called a מתג. So it's ho-SHI-ah and hatz-li-CHAH. Chazanim who are careful in their pronunciation will make a point of this. The טעמים in the Koren תנ״ך reflect this; there's a <span>◌֣</span> under the יוד in הֽוֹשִׁ֣יעָה and there are two טעמים on הַצְלִ֘יחָ֥ה, and the rule is that the stress is on the second טעם. <blockquote lang=he><p>אָנָּ֣א יְ֭קוָק הֽוֹשִׁ֣יעָה נָּ֑א אָנָּ֥א יְ֝קוָ֗ק הַצְלִ֘יחָ֥ה נָֽא׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים קיח:כה על פי תנ״ך קורן</footer></blockquote> However, it looks like the Koren is wrong. The manuscripts of תנ״ך all agree that the טעמים look like: <blockquote lang=he><p>אָנָּ֣א יְ֭קוָק הֽוֹשִׁ֘יעָֽה נָּ֑א אָנָּ֥א יְ֝קוָ֗ק הַצְלִ֘יחָֽהֿ נָּֽא׃</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.aleppocodex.org/newsite/index.html">תהילים קיח:כה על פי כתר ארם־צובה</a></footer></blockquote> So both הושיעה and הצליחה look like they are מלרע. That's odd, because in every other case in תנ״ך they are both מלעיל, for example: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>הוֹשִׁ֤יעָה</em> ׀ אֶת־עַמֶּ֗ךָ וּבָרֵ֥ךְ אֶת־נַֽחֲלָתֶ֑ךָ וּֽרְעֵ֥ם וְ֝נַשְּׂאֵ֗ם עַד־הָֽעוֹלָֽם׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים כח:ט</footer></blockquote> And the only other example of הצליחה: <blockquote lang=he><p>אָנָּ֣א אֲ־דֹנָ֗י תְּהִ֣י נָ֣א אָזְנְךָֽ־קַ֠שֶּׁבֶת אֶל־תְּפִלַּ֨ת עַבְדְּךָ֜ וְאֶל־תְּפִלַּ֣ת עֲבָדֶ֗יךָ הַֽחֲפֵצִים֙ לְיִרְאָ֣ה אֶת־שְׁמֶ֔ךָ וְ<em>הַצְלִֽיחָה</em>־נָּ֤א לְעַבְדְּךָ֙ הַיּ֔וֹם וּתְנֵ֣הוּ לְרַֽחֲמִ֔ים לִפְנֵ֖י הָאִ֣ישׁ הַזֶּ֑ה וַֽאֲנִ֛י הָיִ֥יתִי מַשְׁקֶ֖ה לַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃</p> <footer class=source>נחמיה א:יא</footer></blockquote> But the מנחת שי, a 17th century grammarian, noted the problem: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>הצליחה נא</em>: המסורת עליו ”...מלרע ואחד והצליחה ומלעיל“...אך קשה לי שמלת הושיעה ומלת הצליחה שבפסוק זה שוים הם בטעמם ברוב הספרים ובשניהם יש זרקא באמצע תיבה וטעם אחר בסופה, ומה ראו לחלק ביניהם לקרות הצליחה מלרע והושיעה מלעיל? וראיתי בחבור קטן מדקדוק הנקרא דברי אגור לר׳ יעקב לוי מתושבי קזאלי מונפירא, שהתריס מאוד נגד הקוראים שתי המלות מלעיל, ולמד להם כי שניהם מלרע. ועדיין אין דעתי נוחה בזה ואיני שומע לדבריו לקרות הושיעה מלרע, דאי הכי, לא אישתמיט רד״ק ושאר מדקדקים ובעלי המסורת למימריה כי היכי דאמרו גבי הצליחה דסמיך ליה! ומדלא אמרי מידי שמע מיניה דקריאתו מלעיל כדיניו ולא נפיק מכלליה והכי אשכחנא בסיפרי עתיקי דכתיב הושיעה בטעם גלגל בשי״ן.</p> <footer class=source>מנחת שי, תהילים קיח:כה</footer></blockquote> He seems to be the origin of the way the pasuk is printed now. Rabbi Mordechai Breuer takes issue with the Minchat Shai (thanks to Phyllis Shapiro for bringing this to my attention): <blockquote lang=he><p>טעם הוֹשִׁיעָה, הַצְלִיחָה מלרע בכתבי יד [ובמקראות גדולות וונציה (דניאל בומברג)]--בלי מחלוקת. אף על פי כן הכריע מנחת שי להבדיל ביניהם: הוֹשִׁיעָה מלעיל, הַצְלִיחָה מלרע...הכרעה זו של מנחת שי נתקבלה בכל ההוצאות הרגילות. הוא שגורה גם בפי מתפללים רבים, המבקשים לדקדק באמירת הלל; אף הם מטעמים הוֹשִׁיעָה מלעיל--הַצְלִיחָה מלרע; והטעמה זו נחשבת צחות והידור קריאה.</p> <p>זו דוגמה מובהקת של שיבוש, שנתקבל וגם נשתרש ב”השפעת“ המסורת. כי המסורת נמסר באמת רק על טעמת מלרע של הַצְלִיחָה, ולא על זה של הוֹשִׁיעָה...נמצאת אומר: שתיקת ”בעלי המסורת“ על הטעמת הוֹשִׁיעָה איננה מוכיחה דבר; אף על פי כן היא שיבשה עלינו את הנוסח, ועודנה מטעה את הקוראים המדקדקים.</p> <footer class=source>רב מרדכי בְּרוֹיֶאר, <cite>כתר ארם צובה והנוסח המקובל של המקרא</cite>, עמ׳ 43-44, הערה 18</footer></blockquote> I'm willing to accept that the Koren תנ״ך is wrong, and that the <em>real</em> טעמים are those of the כתבי יד. But that doesn't necessarily tell us how the word is stressed (there are lots of טעמים that are written on the end of the word where the accepted stress is elsewhere) and I think the Minchat Shai's <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argument_from_silence">argument from silence</a> is very strong. I am going to continue to say Hallel with הוֹשִׁיעָה מלעיל, הַצְלִיחָה מלרע. (There's a technical reason for saying that Rav Breuer may be wrong: there's a <a href="https://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%93%D7%97%D7%99%D7%A7">דחיק</a> in נָּא, which implies the previous word is מלעיל. So either we have an error in the כתבי יד, or an exception to the rules of דחיק. ואכמ״ל) But it makes the question stronger: we seem to be going out of our way to say the two halves differently, implying that they are in fact <em>not</em> parallel. <hr/> So we have two almost identical phrases, אנא ה׳ הושיעה נא and אנא ה׳ הצליחה נא that we go out of our way to separate, to pronounce differently, and to imply that they have different meanings. I don't know why, but I can speculate. The perek as a whole is a dramatization of the act of saying Hallel: victory over our enemies and celebration that acknowledges ה׳'s role and culminates in offering קרבנות in the בית המקדש. But in the middle is our אנא ה׳: <blockquote lang=en><p>[In this pasuk] the tone changes completely: אנא ה׳ הושיעה נא. The grammar also changes; David for the first time is addressing ה׳ directly, rather than the people. I think that this is David breaking the fourth wall. He isn’t really going to enter the שערי צדק. There is no בית המקדש. The one thing he wants more than anything else, he cannot have. So for a brief moment, he cries out in despair.</p> <footer class=source><a href="/שבועות+תשע״ז/">Me, שבועות תשע״ז</a></footer></blockquote> This is the pasuk of אחרון של פסח. The Hallel we say today is the Hallel of the redemption that hasn't happened yet. And the two halves of the pasuk are not only not parallel, they are mutually contradictory. אנא ה׳ הושיעה נא is asking ה׳ to save us, to come down from heaven and make it all better. אנא ה׳ הצליחה נא is asking ה׳ to allow our own actions to succeed. And these are the two models of גאולה: <blockquote lang=he><p> הקטן יהיה לאלף והצעיר לגוי עצום; אני ה׳ בעתה אחישנה׃</p> <footer class=source>ישעיהו ס:כב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>רבי יהושע בן לוי רמי: כתיב (ישעיהו ס:כב) ”בעתה“ וכתיב ”אחישנה“. זכו אחישנה; לא זכו בעתה.</p> <footer class=source>סנהדרין צח,א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ר׳ אליעזר אומר אם ישראל עושין תשובה נגאלין ואם לאו אין נגאלין. אמר ליה רבי יהושע אם אין עושין תשובה אין נגאלין? אלא הקב״ה מעמיד להן מלך שגזרותיו קשות כהמן וישראל עושין תשובה ומחזירן למוטב.</p> <footer class=source>סנהדרין צז,ב</footer></blockquote> The גאולה will come. The question is whether that גאולה will be a הצלחה, the fruit of our own efforts, or a ישועה, when ה׳ finally decides that it's been long enough.
