Mishlei starts with a 6-pasuk introduction, in which Shlomo summarizes his goal for the ספר: {:he .lines} ><b>ב</b> לדעת חכמה ומוסר; להבין אמרי בינה׃ <b>ג</b> לקחת מוסר השכל; צדק ומשפט ומשרים׃ <b>ד</b> לתת לפתאים ערמה; לנער דעת ומזמה׃ <b>ה</b> ישמע חכם ויוסף לקח; ונבון תחבלות יקנה׃ <b>ו</b> להבין משל ומליצה; דברי חכמים וחידתם׃ <b>ז</b> יראת ה׳ ראשית דעת; חכמה ומוסר אוילים בזו׃ --משלי פרק א We need to define all these terms. I would assume that they are not simply poetic synonyms, but have significant meanings and distinctions. There are several terms for "wisdom": - דעת - חכמה - מוסר - בינה - שכל - ערמה - מזמה - תחבלות and they have meanings that the מפרשים have teased apart, based on context. Those meanings may be different from the ways those words are used elsewhere in תנ״ך. There are also several words for "good behavior": - צדק - משפט - משרים And several words for "one who lacks wisdom" - פתא - נער - אויל - And one that is not in this introduction, כסיל And several words for "words, text": - אמרי בינה - לקח - משל - מליצה - דברי חכמים - חידה ---- It will be interesting to compare משלי to the other great source of Western ethics, Aristotle's _Nicomachean Ethics_. Much of the philosophical reasoning is similar to משלי, and Rambam famously uses much of the language of Aristotle to describe Torah ethics, but they are profoundly different. Both agree that human beings need to study and practice "ethics", the right way to behave. However, they are very different in the sense that the ultimate goal, their respective definitions of "right" are different. Nonetheless, translating Shlomo's concepts into English warrants some fancy words (and I love fancy words), and those fancy words come from Aristotle's Greek. >Often, all one needs to do is define an unusual terminology with words derived from the Greek to convince the most difficult to please that one has just entered philosophy. --Emmanuel Levinas, [_Nine Talmudic Readings_](https://iupress.org/9780253040497/nine-talmudic-readings/), , p. 122 Shlomo says the basis, the standard by which "right way to behave" is judged, is יראת ה׳:‎ יראת ה׳ ראשית דעת. Aristotle says that the basis is what he calls eudemonia, happiness as the result of an active life governed by reason. >As far as the name [“the attainment of some good”] goes, we may almost say that the great majority of mankind are agreed about this; for both the multitude and persons of refinement speak of it as Happiness [εὐδαιμονία], and conceive ‘the good life’ or ‘doing well’ to be the same thing as ‘being happy’. --_Nicomachean Ethics_, [Book 1, Chapter 4, Section 2](https://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0054%3Abook%3D1%3Achapter%3D4%3Asection%3D2) The purpose of ethics is so we will know how to live a satisfied life. Shlomo says otherwise: {:he} >סוף דבר הכל נשמע; את האלקים ירא ואת מצותיו שמור כי זה כל האדם׃ --קהלת יב:יג We start with יראת ה׳ and strive for the ultimate purpose, which is coming closer to הקב״ה and bringing the world closer to הקב״ה. As Rav Wolpe says in the introduction to עלי שור: {:he} >הבנת הדברים תתכן אך ורק כדי עשייתם למעשה, ובלימוד לבד לא יבינו בהם כלום, וההתרשמות מהם והדיון עליהם על ידי לימודם לבד הם דברים בטלים ומבוטלים. --רב שלמה וולבה, עלי שור, חלק ב׳, הקדמה ###חכמה And what we are supposed to know is חכמה and מוסר.‎ חכמה means "wisdom" but here it has a very specific meaning. {:he} >גדר החכמה הוא לדעת בכל המידות והדרכים והמנהגים, שיש בכל אחד מהם שני דרכים הפוכים זה מזה, כמו אכזריות-רחמים, גאוה-ענוה, עזות-בושת, אכילה-צום, קדושה-טומאה, שהנהגה ע"פ דרך אחד היא חכמה והיפוכה סכלות, למשל: להתנהג בענוה היא חכמה ולהתנהג בגאוה הוא סכלות. ולפעמים הגאוה חכמה והענוה סכלות, כמו נגד רשעים וזדים. --מלבי"ם, משלי א:ב The English word for this type of wisdom is "phronesis". >Phronesis...is a type of wisdom or intelligence relevant to practical action. It implies both good judgment and excellence of character and habits...In Aristotelian ethics, the concept was distinguished from other words for wisdom and intellectual virtues...because of its practical character. --Wikipedia, [_Phronesis_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phronesis) This is the wisdom that Shlomo asked for when ה׳ offered him anything he wanted. {:he} > ונתת לעבדך לב שמע לשפט את עמך להבין בין טוב לרע; כי מי יוכל לשפט את עמך הכבד הזה׃ --מלכים א ג:ט Relevant to this, there is an interesting philosophical question. Is it possible to know the right thing to do and still not do it? Can you act against your own best judgement? Plato says you can't; if you've decided to do something, then, *by definition*, that was your best judgement. >[Socrates:] [P]eople think that, while a man often has knowledge in him, he is not governed by it, but by something else—now by passion, now by pleasure, now by pain, at times by love, and often by fear; their feeling about knowledge is just what they have about a slave, that it may be dragged about by any other force. Now do you agree with this view of it, or do you consider that knowledge is something noble and able to govern man, and that whoever learns what is good and what is bad will never be swayed by anything to act otherwise than as knowledge bids, and that intelligence is a sufficient succor for mankind?... > For you have admitted that it is from defect of knowledge that men err, when they do err, in their choice of pleasures and pains—that is, in the choice of good and evil; and from defect not merely of knowledge but of the knowledge which you have now admitted also to be that of measurement. And surely you know well enough for yourselves that the erring act committed without knowledge is done through ignorance. Accordingly “to be overcome by pleasure” means just this—ignorance in the highest degree. --Plato, [_Protagoras_](http://data.perseus.org/texts/urn:cts:greekLit:tlg0059.tlg022.perseus-eng1) In other words, if you make a bad choice (like eating that fourth donut from the break room) then you obviously don't *really* know how miserable you are going to feel later. But we all have the intuitive sense (as Socrates starts out by saying) that he's wrong. We are not governed by our intellectual knowledge. Our minds don't make decisions, our hearts do ("heart" and "mind" are metaphors here for intellectual and emotional self). The mind is only one input that affects our decisions. The kidneys (the symbol for mind) is called עָצֶה in the Torah because they don't decide, they only advise. {:he} >והקריב מזבח השלמים אשה לה׳ חלבו האליה תמימה לעמת העצה יסירנה; ואת החלב המכסה את הקרב ואת כל החלב אשר על הקרב׃ --ויקרא ג:ט {:he} ><em>לעמת העצה</em>: למעלה מן הכליות היועצות. --רש״י, ויקרא ג:ט Aristotle points out that Plato is clearly wrong, because knowledge is not the same as action. >Now we may ask how a man who judges rightly can behave incontinently. That he should behave so when he has knowledge, some say is impossible; for it would be strange--so Socrates thought--if when knowledge was in a man something else could master it and "drag it about like a slave". For Socrates was entirely opposed to the view in question, holding that there is no such thing as incontinence; no one, he said, when he judges acts against what he judges best--people act so only by reason of ignorance. Now this view plainly contradicts the observed facts... > [W]ithin the case of having knowledge but not using it we see a difference of state, admitting of the possibility of having knowledge in a sense and yet not having it, as in the instance of a man asleep, mad, or drunk. But now this is just the condition of men under the influence of passions; for outbursts of anger and sexual appetites and some other such passions, it is evident, actually alter our bodily condition, and in some men even produce fits of madness. It is plain, then, that incontinent people must be said to be in a similar condition to men asleep, mad, or drunk. The fact that men use the language that flows from knowledge proves nothing... -- Aristotle, [_The Nicomachean Ethics_ VII:3](https://classics.mit.edu/Aristotle/nicomachaen.7.vii.html) The word that is translated here as "incontinent" is, in Greek, ἀκρασία. "Incontinent" is a literal translation, meaning "without control", but means something else entirely in modern English. We will simply use the word "akrasia". >akrasia (or acrasia) > Lack of self-control; excess; intemperance. --Wikitionary, [_akrasia_](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/akrasia) And I would say that Shlomo has a word for this as well. {:he .lines} ><b>ב</b> לדעת חכמה ומוסר; להבין אמרי בינה׃ ... <b>ז</b> יראת ה׳ ראשית דעת; חכמה ומוסר אוילים בזו׃ --משלי פרק א The אויל is one of משלי's "fools". The goal of משלי is לדעת חכמה ומוסר, to integrate phronesis and discipline (which is how I will translate מוסר; more on that later). But the אויל refuses to integrate them (בזו--scorns), and is left in that state of akrasia. They know the right way to act, but let their passions rule them. And the reason for this is that they lack יראת ה׳. Without יראת ה׳, Socratic knowlege will not affect behavior. {:he} >אמנם, האוילים (שגדר האויל הוא המסתפק ובלתי מאמין [משורש ”אולי“]), שהם מטילים ספקות, בין על החכמה, בין על יראת ה' שהוא המוסר שהיא ראשית ויסוד דעת החכמה, הם מבזים בין את החכמה בין את המוסר. > וזהו שאמר שאוילים בזו חכמה ומוסר, מפני שיראת ה' ראשית דעת, רוצה לומר, מפני שאין לחכמה התחלה אחרת לדעת אותה ולהשיג ממנה ידיעה ברורה, רק על-ידי יראת ה', שזה בנוי על אמונה בה' ובחוקי החכמה שבאו מאיתו, אשר הם מסתפקים בכל זה ומבזים את המוסר ויראת ה' עם החכמה שנשענת עליה. --מלבי"ם, משלי א:ז ---- ###מוסר The other thing that Shlomo wants us to know is מוסר, which we usually just transliterate as /Mussar/, perhaps translating it as "character development". It sounds like it should be related to מסורה, transmission. {:he} >משה קבל תורה מסיני, ומסרה ליהושע, ויהושע לזקנים, וזקנים לנביאים, ונביאים מסרוה לאנשי כנסת הגדולה. --משנה אבות א:א But that word is not in תנ״ך at all; it is Mishnaic Hebrew. מוסר comes from the root יסר, to discipline with explicit meaning of negative reinforcement. מוסר is the unpleasant outcome of wrong behavior, or a warning about what is to come. {:he} >מן השמים השמיעך את קלו ליסרך; ועל הארץ הראך את אשו הגדולה ודבריו שמעת מתוך האש׃ --דברים ד:לו {:he} > וידעת עם לבבך; כי כאשר ייסר איש את בנו ה׳ אלקיך מיסרך׃ --דברים ח:ה {:he} >ומהו המוסר? יבואר לקמן (משלי טו:לג): יִרְאַת ה׳ מוּסַר חׇכְמָה, שכוח היראה הנטוע בנפש, מסתעף ממנו סעיף אחד שהוא יראת ה', שהיא תאסור כוחות נפשו בעבותות בל יפרצו חוק, כי באשר יאמין בה' ויודע כי חקי החכמה הם נתונים מה', יירא מה' מכבודו וגדלו ממשפטו וענשו, ויפחד מלסור מחקי החכמה אשר צוה והזהיר עליהם מלך עליון רם ונשא. --מלבי"ם, משלי א:ב חכמה is knowing the right way to act. מוסר is knowing the consequences of the wrong way to act. >Contrast clarifies. Light only has meaning in the context of darkness. The stronger the distinction, the more potent the appreciation and happiness. > ...This is true of emotion as well as morality. By seeing the stark difference between what is right and wrong, the message is clear. Shlomo HaMelech uses this model throughout /Mishlei/. It means analysis, deduction. {:he} ><em>חכמה</em>: מה שאדם שומע מאחרים ולמד. > <em>תבונה</em>: מבין דבר מלבו מתוך דברים שלמד. --רש״י, שמות לא:ג {:he} ><em>חכמים ונבנים</em>: מבינים דבר מתוך דבר. זו היא ששאל אריוס את רבי יוסי מה בין חכמים לנבונים? חכם דומה לשלחני עשיר, כשמביאין לו דינרין לראות רואה, וכשאין מביאין לו יושב ותוהא, נבון דומה לשלחני תגר, כשמביאין לו מעות לראות רואה, וכשאין מביאין לו, הוא מחזר ומביא משלו. --רש"י, דברים א:יג Simply learning the משלים here, even internalizing the messages, is not enough. There is no way that a finite text could encompass every possible situation. You have to be able to extend, to go from the חכמה ומוסר into new areas. So part of the goal of ספר משלי is אמרי בינה, tools for building.
