We started this class exactly 6 years ago (8/26/2012). We've followed David from his days as a rejected shepherd boy to king of Israel, עשה משפט וצדקה לכל עמו. The remainder of ספר שמואל basically deals with the incident of Bat Sheva and its consequences, in the final years of his reign. It's been an intense journey. Right now, I want to take a break from ספר שמואל and look at one perek of תהילים,‎ פרק קיט. It's the longest chapter in נ״ך, with 176 psukim (there are no coincidences: this is the same number of psukim as the longest פרשה in the Torah, נשא, and the number of of pages in the longest מסכתא in the Talmud Bavli, בבא בתרא. But I won't go into that). And it is very hard to study. It isn't really a coherent poem; it is more a collection of individual adages, sort of David's version of ספר משלי. Each one is a statement of how wonderful it is to learn the word of G-d, and the whole adds up to a love song to the Torah. <blockquote lang=en><p>How do I love thee? There are 22 stiches, one for each letter of the alphabet, with eight psukim in each, with strict two-fold parallelism. Simple vocabulary and simple structure. We never read the whole thing at once, but we use it when we want to read psukim that start with a specific letter (like spelling a person's name). I suspect it was written (and performed) not as a unitary whole, but as separate piyutim with a common theme. And that's the way we will read it. The eight-fold structure is noted in the gemara: <blockquote lang=he><p>אמר רבי אלעזר א״ר אבינא: כל האומר (תהילים קמה) תהלה לדוד בכל יום שלש פעמים מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא. מאי טעמא? אילימא משום דאתיא באל״ף בי״ת, נימא (תהילים קיט) אשרי תמימי דרך, דאתיא בתמניא אפין.</p> <footer class=source>ברכות ד,ב</footer></blockquote> The Maharal explains the importance of the number eight, as symbolizing the supernatural (<a href="http://kavanot.bililite.com/Great+Responsibility/">we've talked about this</a> in the context of תהילים that are "על השמינית"): <blockquote lang=he><p>...הנהגהת הטבע נברא בשבעה ימי בראשית ואלו התורה היא על הטבע והיא מדרגת שמינית. ועל פי טעם זה מזמור אַשְׁרֵי תְמִימֵי דָרֶךְ שהוסד על התורה יש בו שמונה אלפא-ביתא, שהתורה היא מדריגה שמינית שהיא על הטבע שנברא בשבעת ימי בראשית. וכן כל דבר שהוא על הטבע והוא תיקון מה שחסר הטבע הוא אחר השבעה, והמילה בשמיני כי האדם מצד הטבע נברא עם הערלה והוא פחיתות הטבע, והמילה היא תיקון הטבע ולפיכך תיקון הזה הוא ביום השמיני לפי שהוא אחר הטבע שנבראת בששת ימי בראשית.</p> <footer class=source>מהר״ל, תפארת ישראל, פרק שני</footer></blockquote> Note that "supernatural" here means "beyond nature", not in the occult sense but in the sense that <em>we</em>, human beings, act to improve the Divine-created nature: <blockquote lang=he><p>שאל טורנוסרופוס הרשע: איזה מעשים נאים של הקדוש ברוך הוא או של בשר ודם?</p> <p>אמר לו: של בשר ודם. </p> <p>אמר לו טורנוסרופוס הרשע: ראית השמים והארץ, יכול האדם לעשות כיוצא בהם?</p> <p>אמר לו רבי עקיבא: לא תאמר לי בדבר שהוא למעלה מן הבריות שאין שולטים עליו, אלא אמור דברים שהם מצויין בבני אדם.</p> <p>אמר לו: למה אתם מולים?</p> <p>אמר לו: אני הייתי יודע שעל דבר זה אתה שואלני, ולכך הקדמתי ואמרתי לך שמעשה בני אדם נאים משל הקדוש ברוך הוא.</p> <p>הביא לו רבי עקיבא שבלים וגלוסקאות.</p> <p>אמר לו טורנוסרופוס הרשע: אם הקדוש ברוך הוא רוצה במילה, למה אינו יוצא הולד מהול ממעי אמו?</p> <p>אמר לו רבי עקיבא: ולמה טיבורו יוצא עמו והוא תלוי בבטנו ואמו חותכתו.</p> <p>ומה שאתה אומר למה אינו יוצא מהול, שלא נתן הקדוש ברוך הוא המצוות אלא לצרף האדם בהם, לכך אמר דוד[sic]: (משלי ל:ה) כל אמרת אלוה צרופה.</p> <footer class=source>ילקוט שמעוני, תזריע, רמז תקמז</footer></blockquote> And that's what the Torah is, our way of making the world a better place, the real meaning of תיקון עולם. And why should we say it three times a day (thankfully, only אשרי, not our perek)? <blockquote lang=he><p>ההכנה שיכין האדם עצמו אל השלמות האמיתי תהיה באמצעות שני דברים. האחד, שיאיר לו אור השכל הנובע מהתוה״ק לדעת את קונו, והב׳, שלא יהיה לו מפריע מטרדות העוה״ז. והנה אף מי שאור שכלו תמיד עמו, אפשר שיפשע ויטה מדרך הישר ע״י הטרדות המטרידות אותו. והנה המשגב להנצל מסבך הטרדות הוא הבטחון. ע״כ אף <em>כי נשגב השבח שנאמר באלפא ביתא, שכולל כל אותיות התורה, ובסגולת אמירתם יאירו עליו אורות התוה״ק בכללם</em>, עכ״ז עוד לא הגיע אל החפץ עד שיהיה ג״כ שלם בבטחון.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://he.wikisource.org/wiki/%D7%A2%D7%99%D7%9F_%D7%90%D7%99%D7%94_%D7%A2%D7%9C_%D7%91%D7%A8%D7%9B%D7%95%D7%AA_%D7%90_%D7%9B%D7%90">עין איה על ברכות ד,ב (א:כא)</a></footer></blockquote> The other feature of the structure of this perek is that each pasuk uses one of twelve synonyms for Torah: <blockquote lang=he><p>המזמור הזה הוא נכבד מאד וחברו דוד על שמונה אל״ף בית כי בכל אות יש בו שמנה פסוקים ובכל פסוק יש בו דרך, או תורה, או עדות, או פקודים, או מצוה, או אמירה, או דבור, או משפט, או צדק, או אמונה, או חוקים, ואלה המלות הם חלוקי כל התורה.</p> <footer class=source>רד׳ק, תהילים קיט:א</footer></blockquote> (There is one pasuk, קכב, that uses the term טוב as its synonym for Torah). We will discuss the distinctions between the terms later. Looking at this first piyut, we see that it starts echoing the book of תהילים as a whole: <blockquote lang=he><p>אשרי האיש אשר לא הלך בעצת רשעים;<br/> ובדרך חטאים לא עמד ובמושב לצים לא ישב׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים א:א</footer></blockquote> The underlying reason that David gives for learning תורת ה׳ is to do the מצוות:‎ לא פעלו עולה; בדרכיו הלכו. This is a strictly utilitarian perspective; we need to know the laws in order to keep them. He will expand on this later. Part of the way I will read each sub-poem is to look for the volta, the "turn", as the poet starts us thinking in one direction then introduces a new perspective. Each letter, as I read this perek, brings in a new idea, and that is what I will emphasize. <blockquote lang=en><p>The turn—a significant shift in rhetorical and/or dramatic trajectory—is a vital component of great poems....In “Andrew Marvell,” T.S. Eliot goes so far as to call the surprising turn “one of the most important means of poetic effect since Homer.” In “Levels and Opposites: Structure in Poetry,” one of the great essays on poetic structure—the pattern of a poem’s turning—Randall Jarrell states, “A successful poem starts from one position and ends at a very different one, often a contradictory or opposite one; yet there has been no break in the unity of the poem.” It is precisely the turn that is the transition that moves the poem from one position to another.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://voltagepoetry.com/">Kim Addonizio, <cite>About Voltage Poetry</cite></a></footer></blockquote> Here the volta changes the tone from third person ("they" go in "His" ways) to a more personal account ("my" hopes are to keep "Your" commands). And that will establish the theme of the entire perek: learning Torah establishes our relationship with הקב״ה. It's more than practical; it's personal.
