This week's parsha is all about the wonders of ארץ ישראל and ה׳'s providence over it. {:he} >ואכלת ושבעת וברכת את ה׳ אלקיך על הארץ הטבה אשר נתן לך׃ --דברים ח:י There is a מצווה דאורייתא to bentch ברכת המזון; this may be the only ברכה that is Biblically mandated. {:he} >אמר רב יהודה: מנין לברכת המזון לאחריה מן התורה? שנאמר: וְאָכַלְתָּ וְשָׂבָעְתָּ וּבֵרַכְתָּ. --ברכות כא,א There are six parts of ברכת המזון: it starts with זימון, the invitation to the community to join (when appropriate), then the four ברכות, then the "הרחמן"s, which the gemara calls ברכת האורך (we discussed that in <//פרשת חיי שרה תשפ״ב>). The text we have for ברכת המזון was developed over centuries: {:he} >אמר רב נחמן: משה תקן לישראל ברכת הזן בשעה שירד להם מן. יהושע תקן להם ברכת הארץ כיון שנכנסו לארץ. דוד ושלמה תקנו ”בונה ירושלים“. דוד תקן ”על ישראל עמך ועל ירושלים עירך“, ושלמה תקן ”על הבית הגדול והקדוש“. ”הטוב והמטיב“ ביבנה תקנוה כנגד הרוגי ביתר. --ברכות מח,ב But, like all ברכות, the text is Rabbinically mandated. The Torah requires us to ברכת את ה׳ אלקיך, but doesn't specify how. Could we fulfill our obligation with the words of the Gaon of Springfield, Bart Simpson? >Rub-a-dub-dub, thanks for the grub. --Bart Simpson, [There’s No Disgrace Like Home](http://www.simpsonsforever.com/episodes/quotes/quote.php?id=55) The gemara concludes that no, the *concepts* of the first three ברכות are required by the Torah: {:he} >ורבי אומר: וְאָכַלְתָּ וְשָׂבָעְתָּ וּבֵרַכְתָּ--זו ברכת הזן, אבל ברכת הזמון מ־(תהלים לד:ד) גַּדְּלוּ לַה׳ אִתִּי נפקא. עַל הָאָרֶץ—זו ברכת הארץ, הַטּוֹבָה—זו ”בונה ירושלים“, וכן הוא אומר (דברים ג:כה) הָהָר הַטּוֹב הַזֶּה וְהַלְּבָנוֹן. ”הטוב והמטיב“, ביבנה תקנוה. --ברכות מח,ב {:he} >הא דאמרינן: משה תקן להם ברכת הזן יהושע תקן להם ברכת הארץ וכו'. קשיא לי והא קיימא לן בסמוך דברכות אלו מדאורייתא נינהו. ויש לומר דמטבען הוא שטבעו להם, דאי מדאורייתא אם רצה לאומרה באי זה מטבע שירצה אומרה ואתו משה ויהושע ודוד ושלמה ותקנו להן מטבע לכל אחת ואחת בזמנה. --רשב״א,ברכות מח,ב ---- The פשט, however, reads, "when you eat and are satisfied, bless G-d for the land He has given you"; there is no requirement to thank ה׳ for the actual food. But that doesn't seems to make sense, so Ramban adds an "and" in there: {:he} >וטעם ”על הארץ הטובה“ כמו ”**ו**על הארץ הטובה“; יצוה שתברכהו בכל עת שתשבע, על השובע, ועל הארץ שנתן לך שינחילנה לך לעולמים ותשבע מטובה. --רמב״ן, דברים ח:י I clearly have to thank ה׳ for the food I have eaten, but the pasuk adds that I also need to thank Him for ארץ ישראל, even if the food I'm eating doesn't come from there. There's a very ציוני implication: my food *should* come from the Holy Land; I should be living there and living off its produce. That explains ברכת הזן and ברכת הארץ. But why add a ברכה for Jerusalem? The connection between בונה ירושלים and הטובה seems forced. The חתם סופר has a different perspective. He looks at the context of our pasuk: {:he} ><b>י</b> ואכלת ושבעת וברכת את ה׳ אלקיך על הארץ הטבה אשר נתן לך׃ <b>יא</b> השמר לך פן תשכח את ה׳ אלקיך לבלתי שמר מצותיו ומשפטיו וחקתיו אשר אנכי מצוך היום׃ <b>יב</b> פן תאכל ושבעת; ובתים טבים תבנה וישבת׃ ...<b>יד</b> ורם לבבך; ושכחת את ה׳ אלקיך המוציאך מארץ מצרים מבית עבדים׃ --דברים פרק ח {:he} >נחום הזקן אומר: צריך שיזכור בה ברית. רבי יוסי אומר: צריך שיזכור בה תורה. --ברכות מח,ב {:he} >יראה כי הרי אנו מברכים בהמ"ז ומזכירין ברית ותורה וחוקיך שהודעתנו כי זולת זה אין ראוי לברך על המזון כי מה בצע בקיום הגוף העכור הזה ואין האכילה וכל הנאת העוה"ז כדאים לברך השי"ת עליהם אם לא שהם סבות לקיום בריתו ותורה וחוקים אבל העושה האכילה עיקר ומברך רק על האכילה גרידא יבוא להחשיב העוה"ז לדבר חשוב וימשך אחריו ולבסוף ישכח ה' ויסור מאחריו ע"כ אמר ואכלת ושבעת וברכת את ה' אלקיך על הארץ הטובה לבד ולא על קיום מצותיה השמר לך פן תשכח. --חתם סופר על התורה, עקב, דברים ח:י Thanking ה׳ for the food is not enough. Even if I bentch regularly, if I do not appreciate the purpose of that food, I will end up in a state of תאכל ושבעת...ושכחת את ה׳ אלקיך. I need to thank ה׳ for giving me a purpose, a reason to eat that food. In fact, I need to thank ה׳ for allowing me to ask for food at all. {:he} >שאלו תלמידיו את רבי שמעון בן יוחי: מפני מה לא ירד להם לישראל מן פעם אחת בשנה? אמר להם: אמשול לכם משל: למה הדבר דומה? למלך בשר ודם שיש לו בן אחד, פסק לו מזונותיו פעם אחת בשנה, ולא היה מקביל פני אביו אלא פעם אחת בשנה. עמד ופסק מזונותיו בכל יום, והיה מקביל פני אביו כל יום. > אף ישראל, מי שיש לו ארבעה וחמשה בנים היה דואג ואומר: שמא לא ירד מן למחר, ונמצאו כולן מתים ברעב, נמצאו כולן מכוונים את לבם לאביהן שבשמים. --יומא עו,א Rabbi Simcha Bunim of Peshischa (an early chassidic master, cited in Praying with Fire 1) questions the punishment of the snake in גן עדן:‎ (בראשית ג:יד)‎ ויאמר ה׳ אלקים אל הנחש כי עשית זאת ארור אתה מכל הבהמה ומכל חית השדה; על גחנך תלך ועפר תאכל כל ימי חייך׃. What kind of punishment is this? Dust may not taste good but it is omnipresent; ה׳ is telling the snake that it will never go hungry, never have to look for food. But having that lack forces us to look to ה׳, to daven, to establish a relationship with הקב״ה that we would not have if everything was easy. Giving your kids a credit card and never talking to them does not make for a healthy parent-child relationship. Telling the snake, “Go eat anything; I don’t want to hear from you” was in truth a terrible punishment. >Fundamentally, /Birkas Hamazon/ is not an act of thanksgiving or praise, but an act of remembering G-d, a fulfillment of the constant command to remember and be cognizant of our Creator in every aspect of our life. As the Torah concludes this section (verse 18), "But you must remember the Lord your G-d, for it is He that gives you strength to make wealth". > Thus, /Birkas Hamazon/ is not simply a particular commandment regarding food and our satiation; it is instead an expression of the belief and commitment that underpins our entire religious life. Indeed, from the standpoint of the psychology of religion, the telos of /Birkas Hamazon/, to remember G-d, is the most important element in one’s religious experience. To offer praise before G-d is easy; to give thanks, one has merely to become sentimental. However, to remember G-d and ascribe everything to Him, to attribute the whole cosmic process of creation to God, and to know always that He is the Master, the Lord, and the Owner of everything, requires a mental discipline of the highest order, and it is in truth the basic religious experience. --Rabbi Joseph B. And that explains the text of the third ברכה. It starts with ירושלים and the בית המקדש, and ends with ירושלים and the בית המקדש: {:he} >רַחֵם ה׳ אֱלֺקֵֽינוּ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל עַמֶּֽךָ וְעַל יְרוּשָׁלַֽיִם עִירֶֽךָ וְעַל צִיּוֹן מִשְׁכַּן כְּבוֹדֶֽךָ וְעַל מַלְכוּת בֵּית דָּוִד מְשִׁיחֶֽךָ וְעַל־הַבַּֽיִת הַגָּדוֹל וְהַקָּדוֹשׁ שֶׁנִּקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלָיו...וּבְנֵה יְרוּשָׁלַֽיִם עִיר הַקֹּֽדֶשׁ בִּמְהֵרָה בְיָמֵֽינוּ: בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה׳ בּוֹנֵה בְרַחֲמָיו יְרוּשָׁלָֽיִם... --ברכת המזון, סידור אשכנז But it includes an apparently irrelevant prayer in the middle: {:he} >אֱלֺקֵֽינוּ...זוּנֵֽנוּ פַּרְנְסֵֽנוּ וְכַלְכְּלֵֽנוּ...וְנָא אַל־תַּצְרִיכֵֽנוּ ה׳ אֱלֺקֵֽינוּ לֺא לִידֵי מַתְּנַת בָּשָׂר וָדָם וְלֺא לִידֵי הַלְוָאָתָם כִּי אִם לְיָדְךָ הַמְּלֵאָה הַפְּתוּחָה הַקְּדוֹשָׁה וְהָרְחָבָה. --ברכת המזון, סידור אשכנז As a side point, Rav Soloveitchik had a different נוסח: {:he} >בנוסח ברכת המזון היה נוהג רבנו לומר, ”כי אם לידך המלאה הפתוחה ה**ג**דושה“ בגימ"ל, ולא ה**ק**דושה בקו״ף. וכן הוא נוסח הבעש"ט. --נפש הרב, עמ׳ קמח Our תפילה--and by implication, the בית המקדש--is not about קדושה or עבודה. It is about appreciating our dependency on ה׳, and the relationship that warrants תפילה. And that is what the בית המקדש is really all about: {:he} ><b>כז</b> כי האמנם ישב אלקים על הארץ; הנה השמים ושמי השמים לא יכלכלוך אף כי הבית הזה אשר בניתי׃ <b>כח</b> ופנית אל תפלת עבדך ואל תחנתו ה׳ אלקי; לשמע אל הרנה ואל התפלה אשר עבדך מתפלל לפניך היום׃ <b>כט</b> להיות עינך פתחת אל הבית הזה לילה ויום אל המקום אשר אמרת יהיה שמי שם לשמע אל התפלה אשר יתפלל עבדך אל המקום הזה׃ <b>ל</b> ושמעת אל תחנת עבדך ועמך ישראל אשר יתפללו אל המקום הזה; ואתה תשמע אל מקום שבתך אל השמים ושמעת וסלחת׃ --מלכים א פרק ח {:he} >והביאותים אל הר קדשי ושמחתים בבית תפלתי עולתיהם וזבחיהם לרצון על מזבחי; כי ביתי בית תפלה יקרא לכל העמים׃ --ישעיהו נו:ז And that is what ברכת את ה׳ אלקיך really means.
