The earliest translation of "multicolored" I can find is from the Septuagint: {:el} >Ιακωβ δὲ ἠγάπα τὸν Ιωσηφ παρὰ πάντας τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ ὅτι υἱὸς γήρους ἠν αὐτω ἐποίησεν δὲ αὐτω *χιτῶνα ποικίλον*. > And Jacob loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was to him the son of his old age; and he made for him a coat of many colors. --Septuagint, Genesis 37:3, Breton translation. But even there, the Greek word ποικίλον means "varied". Nothing about colors. The clue is the only use of the singular, and in Aramaic: {:he} >בַּהּ שַׁעֲתָה נְפַקָה אֶצְבְּעָן דִּי יַד אֱנָשׁ וְכָתְבָן לָקֳבֵל נֶבְרַשְׁתָּא עַל גִּירָא דִּי כְתַל הֵיכְלָא דִּי מַלְכָּא וּמַלְכָּא חָזֵה פַּס יְדָה דִּי כָתְבָה. --דניאל ה:ה פס יד is the palm of the hand, and in Gemara Aramaic it is used for a part, and thence means "stripe". So כתנת פסים means "a coat made from pieces", "a striped coat". {:he} ><em>פסים</em>: מענין ”פס ידיו“, והיתה הכתונת עשויה פס אחד מצבע אחד ופס אחד מצבע אחר, כמו כלי מילת שעשוים פסים פסים. --רד"ק, בראשית לז:ג "כלי מילת" in the gemara refers to a fine woolen garment (irrespective of its color), and that's how Rashi translates it, with a reference to מגילת אסתר: {:he} ><em>פסים</em>: לשון כלי מילת, כמו כרפס ותכלת, וכמו כתנת הפסים דתמר ואמנון. --רש״י, בראשית לז:ג ---- But that's all pretty far from פַּס יְדָה, the palm of the hand. So the midrash (ironically) takes the word more literally: {:he} >פַּסִּים, שֶׁהָיְתָה מַגַּעַת עַד פַּס יָדוֹ. > דָּבָר אַחֵר, פַּסִים, שֶׁהָיְתָה דַקָּה וְקַלָּה בְּיוֹתֵר וְנִטְמֶנֶת בְּפַס יַד. --בראשית רבה פד:ח In the story of Tamar, Malbim says that it was delicate enough that it was an indoor garment only. Throwing Tamar out clad only in her כתנת פסים is even more humiliating. <blockquote lang=he><p>ו<em>עליה כתנת פסים</em>: יש הבדל בין כתונת ובין מעיל, שהכתונת הוא התחתון והמעיל יעטפו בו מלמעלה על כל הבגדים, ודרך בנות המלך הבתולות לעטוף מעיל על כתונת הפסים שלמטה, ובשעת מעשה הסיר מעליה המעיל העליון ולא לבשה רק כתונת הפסים, וכשהוציאה לא עטפה המעיל, רק ועליה כתונת פסים שהוציאה בבגד התחתון, הגם שכן תלבשנה בנות המלך הבתולת מעילים ואין דרכם לצאת בכתונת, בכ״ז ויוצא אותה משרתו החוץ מופשטת ממעיל ובזויה מכבודה, ודחופה כאחת הקדשות.</p> <footer class=source>מלבי״ם, שמואל ב יג:יח</footer></blockquote> The idea that the כתונת is an undergarment is hinted at in the Yosef story as well: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויהי כאשר בא יוסף אל אחיו; ויפשיטו את יוסף את כתנתו את כתנת הפסים אשר עליו׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית לז:כג</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>את כתנתו</em>: זֶה חָלוּק.</p> <p><em>את כתנת הפסים</em>: הוּא שֶׁהוֹסִיף לוֹ אָבִיו יוֹתֵר עַל אֶחָיו.</p> <footer class=source>רש׳י, שם</footer></blockquote> Looking at it this way changes our understanding of the כתנת פסים. We often think of it as a symbol that Yaakov is putting Yosef in charge of his brothers. A superfluous brightly colored garment is often a symbol of authority; think of who wears a tie in a factory. But in תנ״ך, it's not a tie *or* a כתנת. It's an אפוד. {:he} > ושמואל משרת את פני ה׳; נער חגור אפוד בד׃ --שמואל א ב:יח {:he} >ויאמר המלך לדואג סב אתה ופגע בכהנים; ויסב דואג האדמי ויפגע הוא בכהנים וימת ביום ההוא שמנים וחמשה איש נשא אפוד בד׃ --שמואל א כב:יח {:he} > ודוד מכרכר בכל עז לפני ה׳; ודוד חגור אפוד בד׃ --שמואל ב ו:יד The כתנת פסים is different. Whether we translate פסים as "delicate" or "long-sleeved", it is a garment worn by someone who did not engage in manual labor. The other brothers were mucking about with the sheep. Yaakov, by dressing Yosef in a כתנת פסים, was saying that Yosef didn't have to get himself dirty. {:he} ><b>יב</b> וילכו אחיו לרעות את צאן אביהם בשכם׃ <b>יג</b> ויאמר ישראל אל יוסף הלוא אחיך רעים בשכם לכה ואשלחך אליהם; ויאמר לו הנני׃ --בראשית פרק לז ---- So what was Yaakov thinking? We have to go back to the original pasuk: {:he} >וישראל אהב את יוסף מכל בניו כי בן זקנים הוא לו; ועשה לו כתנת פסים׃ --בראשית לז:ג What is a בן זקנים? Literally it means "a child of his old age", but all 11 sons were born in a 7-year span; Zevulun is the same age as Yosef. Why is Yosef the בן זקנים? Onkelos reads זקן as figurative: {:he} >וְיִשְׂרָאֵל רְחֵם יָת יוֹסֵף מִכָּל בְּנוֹהִי אֲרֵי בַר חַכִּים הוּא לֵיהּ וַעֲבַד לֵיהּ כִּתּוּנָא דְפַסֵּי: --תרגום אונקלוס, בראשית לז:ג {:he} ><em>בן זקנים</em>: שנולד לו לעת זקנתו. ואנקלוס תרגם ”בר חכים הוא ליה“--כל מה שלמד משם ועבר מסר לו. --רש"י, בראשית לז:ג And this gets back to my favorite pasuk in the Torah: {:he} >ויגדלו הנערים ויהי עשו איש ידע ציד איש שדה; ויעקב איש תם ישב אהלים׃</p> --בראשית כה:כז >Esav was a man outstanding in his field, but Yaakov was *intense*. --My free translation יושב אהלים has two meanings: {:he} ><em>יושב אהלים</em>: ויתכן להיות פירושו כמו יושב אהל ומקנה. --אבן עזרא, בראשית כה:כז {:he} ><em>ישב אהלים</em>: אהלו של שם ואהלו של עבר. --רש״י, בראשית כה:כז Is Yaakov a shepherd or a scholar? Yes. Yaakov has two legacies that he wants to pass on to his children. There is the family business: {:.lines} >Jacob, Jacob and sons Spent all of his days in the fields with sheep --/Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat/, [_Jacob & Sons_](https://www.lyricsondemand.com/soundtracks/j/josephandtheamazingtechnicolordreamcoatlyrics/jacobsonslyrics.html) And the real family business: {:he} > <b>יח</b> ואברהם היו יהיה לגוי גדול ועצום; ונברכו בו כל גויי הארץ׃ <b>יט</b> כי ידעתיו למען אשר יצוה את בניו ואת ביתו אחריו ושמרו דרך ה׳ לעשות צדקה ומשפט למען הביא ה׳ על אברהם את אשר דבר עליו׃ --בראשית פרק יח Yaakov saw in Yosef the potential to be the one to lead ושמרו דרך ה׳ לעשות צדקה ומשפט. But Yosef missed the point: {:he} ><em>והוא נער</em>: שהיה עושה מעשה נערות, מתקן בשערו, ממשמש בעיניו, כדי שיהיה נראה יפה. --רש"י, בראשית לז:ב He will eventually get there and become יוסף הצדיק. But he's not there yet.
