In this week's parsha, Bilaam blesses Israel three times, then offers a final prophecy about the "End of Days": {:he} ><b>יד</b> ועתה הנני הולך לעמי; לכה איעצך אשר יעשה העם הזה לעמך באחרית הימים׃...<b>יז</b> אראנו ולא עתה אשורנו ולא קרוב; דרך כוכב מיעקב וקם שבט מישראל ומחץ פאתי מואב וקרקר כל בני שת׃ <b>יח</b> והיה אדום ירשה והיה ירשה שעיר איביו; וישראל עשה חיל׃ <b>יט</b> וירד מיעקב; והאביד שריד מעיר׃ --במדבר פרק כד It's interesting that Bilaam is one of the few characters in the Torah for which we have archeological evidence: <figure lang="en"><blockquote lang="en"><p>The Deir ‘Alla Inscription (or Bal’am Son of Be’or Inscription) was discovered during a 1967 excavation in Deir ’Alla, Jordan. The excavation revealed a multiple-chamber structure that has been destroyed by an earthquake during the Persian period, on the wall of which was written a story relating visions of the seer of the gods Bal’am, son of Be’or, who may be the same Bal’am mentioned in Numbers 22–24 and in other passages of the Bible.</p> …<p>The inscription has been dated to 880–770 BCE; it was painted in ink on fragments of a plastered wall…In all, 119 pieces of ink-inscribed plaster were recovered. No one has seen [the likes of] what you have heard!”</p><p> </p><p> Balaam arose on the morrow; he summoned the heads of the assembly to him, and for two days he fasted, and wept bitterly…</p> </blockquote><figcaption class="source"><span><a href="http://www.livius.org/sources/content/deir-alla-inscription/?">Deir 'Alla Inscription</a></span></figcaption></figure> Bilaam presumably made lots of prophecies, but he's not Jewish. Why include them in the Torah? {:he} >משה כתב ספרו ופרשת בלעם ואיוב. --בבא בתרא יד,ב Now, "ספרו" refers to ספר דברים, as we discussed in <//פרשת בלק תשע״ז>, not the Torah as a whole, which was dictated by ה׳ to Moshe. ספרו ופרשת בלעם are different, in that they are the expressions of Moshe's נבואה. <figure lang="he"><blockquote lang="he"><p>מ״ש ”כתב ספרו ופרשת בלעם“...משה רבינו ע״ה השיג מה שהשיג בלעם בענין נבואה על העתיד לישראל וכל הברכות…ו*ראויה היתה פרשה זו לומר על ידי משה רבינו בלי אמצעית בלעם* רק צריך להיות הקטיגור סניגור…</p> </blockquote><figcaption class="source"><span><a href="https://www.sefaria.org/Shenei_Luchot_HaBerit%2C_Torah_Shebikhtav%2C_Balak%2C_Torah_Ohr.16?lang=he">של״ה הקדוש על התורה, פרשת שני לוחות הברית, תורה שבכתב, בלק, תורה אור טז</a></span></figcaption></figure> So פרשת בלעם isn't really Bilaam's prophecy; it's Moshe's, giving us the same message as Bilaam gave to Balak (though presumably Bilaam's was given in Moabian, not Hebrew). We can understand that Bilaam's blessings are included in the Torah to teach us that ה׳ saved us. {:he} >ולא אבה ה׳ אלקיך לשמע אל בלעם ויהפך ה׳ אלקיך לך את הקללה לברכה; כי אהבך ה׳ אלקיך׃ --דברים כג:ו {:he} >לכך נכתבה פרשת בלעם להודיע למה סילק הקדוש ברוך הוא רוח הקודש מאומות העולם שזה עמד מהן וראה מה עשה. --תנחומא בובר, בלק א But then why the אחרית הימים prophecy? We usually understand that אחרית הימים refers to the "End of History", what we call ימות המשיח: <figure lang="he"><blockquote lang="he"><p><em>באחרית הימים</em>: ימות המשיח, שאליו ירמוז באמרו ”עד כי יבא שילה“.</p> </blockquote><figcaption class="source"><span>רמב״ן, בראשית מט:א</span></figcaption></figure> But Rabbi Shulman always insists that it just means "later times", and the Netziv agrees: <figure lang="he"><blockquote lang="he"><p><em>באחרית הימים</em>: רוצה לומר באחרית תקופה שעמד בה, שהיא עד חיי דוד. ומשה נבא לישראל בברכתו על ימי חטאם עד סוף ימי הבית, והנביאים התנבאו על הגלות והמשיח…</p> </blockquote><figcaption class="source"><span>העמק דבר, בראשית מט:א</span></figcaption></figure> And in our parasha, the Netziv says that Bilaam's vision was about King David's conquests. Bilaam is reassuring Balak that he has nothing to worry about *now*; 400 years from now the Israelites will attack Moav, but not yet. {:he} >ופי׳ ”אחרית הימים“ אינו אחרית ימות עולם אלא תקופה שהוא עומד בה, היינו של ביאת ישראל לארץ שנמשך עד ימי דוד. וע׳ מש״כ בספר בראשית מ״ט א׳. אבל עתה אין לך לחוש ולהתחרות עמהם. --העמק דבר, במדבר כד:יד Then the Netziv cites the Rambam, that in fact this prophecy applies in part to the time of David, and in part to the eschatological "End of History": {:he} ><b>ג</b> אף בפרשת בלעם נאמר, ושם ניבא בשני המשיחים--במשיח הראשון שהוא דויד, שהושיע את ישראל מיד צריהם, ובמשיח האחרון שיעמוד מבניו, שמושיע את ישראל מיד בני עשיו. > <b>ד</b> ושם הוא אומר ”אראנו ולא עתה“, זה דויד; ”אשורנו ולא קרוב“, זה המלך המשיח. ”דרך כוכב מיעקוב“, זה דויד; ”וקם שבט מישראל“, זה המלך המשיח. ”ומחץ פאתי מואב“--זה דויד, וכן הוא אומר (שמואל ב ח:ב) ”ויך את מואב, וימדדם בחבל“. ”וקרקר כל בני שת“--זה המלך המשיח, שנאמר בו (זכריה ט:י) ”ומושלו מים עד ים“. ”והיה אדום ירשה“--לדויד, שנאמר (שמואל ב ח:יד)[”ויהי כל אדום עבדים לדוד“]. This is a problem: what do *we* do with this? Why is *Moshe* given this prophecy, and insructed to include it in the Torah? I think the answer is clearly to give us hope, that even when we are oppressed and downtrodden, there will come a time when דרך כוכב מיעקב וקם שבט מישראל. Knowing that even the non-Jews believe this is even more reassuring. But there is a danger. Let's look at the story of David's conquest of Moav: {:he} ><b>א</b> ויהי אחרי כן ויך דוד את פלשתים ויכניעם; ויקח דוד את מתג האמה מיד פלשתים׃ <b>ב</b> ויך את מואב וימדדם בחבל השכב אותם ארצה וימדד שני חבלים להמית ומלא החבל להחיות; ותהי מואב לדוד לעבדים נשאי מנחה׃ <b>ג</b> ויך דוד את הדדעזר בן רחב מלך צובה בלכתו להשיב ידו בנהר פרת׃ > ...<b>יד</b> וישם באדום נצבים בכל אדום שם נצבים ויהי כל אדום עבדים לדוד; ויושע ה׳ את דוד בכל אשר הלך׃ <b>טו</b> וימלך דוד על כל ישראל; ויהי דוד עשה משפט וצדקה לכל עמו׃ --שמואל ב פרק ח <blockquote lang=en><p>I was as proud as a peacock, for I had taken a kingdom the size of Vermont, and created an empire as large as the state of Maine!</p> <footer class=source>Joseph Heller, <cite>G-d Knows</cite>, p. 256</footer></blockquote> I have to admit that Rabbi Shulman reads this perek very differently from the way I do. He reads it as a summary of the battles that will come up later, in פרק י, as *defensive* wars that culminate in victories that allow David to extend his influence. This perek is a description of the glory of David's empire. I read it much more darkly. This perek describes David's מלחמות רשות, wars he undertook with the deliberate aim of taking spoils from other nations: {:he} ><em>ויהי אחרי כן ויך דויד</em>: אחר שאמר דוד לבנות בית וא"ל הקב"ה לא תבנה אתה, אמר דוד הואיל ואין עלי לבנות הבית אלא בני, עתה אכינה ואסדר לו הכל לכשיבא בני לבנות הבית שיהא לו הכל מזומן. ועתה מניח הכל והולך ומספר היאך זימן לו הבנין, שנלחם עם אויביו והקדיש שללם לבנין הבית. --”רש״י“, דברי הימים א יח:א <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ויהי אחרי כן</em>: הודיעו ה׳ ע״י הנביא כי לא הוא יבנה הבית באשר עוד לא נכרתו אויביו מפניו, ראה כי רצון ה׳ שלא ינוח עדיין ממלחמה, לכן יצא לבקש את אויביו ולתגר בם מלחמה בארצם. </p> <footer class=source>מלבי״ם, שמואל ב ח:א</footer></blockquote> The Netziv adds that David's wars are fundamentally different from previous ones. He may ask ה׳ through the נביא or the אורים ותומים, but there is no mitzvah to go to war, no commandment. {:he} ><em>דרך כוכב מיעקב</em>: זה דוד ופי׳ דרך עשה לו דרך בפ״ע. > ...מלחמת דוד היה הכל שלא בדרך נס כי אם בקבוץ גבורים ובעזר ה׳. והיינו ”דרך כוכב מיעקב“. --העמק דבר, במדבר כד:יז It isn't obvious from the summary in ספר שמואל, but it wasn't all glorious victory. <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> למנצח על שושן עדות; מכתם לדוד ללמד׃<br/> <b>ב</b> בהצותו את ארם נהרים ואת ארם צובה;<br/> וישב יואב ויך את אדום בגיא מלח שנים עשר אלף׃<br/> <b>ג</b> אלקים זנחתנו פרצתנו; אנפת תשובב לנו׃<br/> <b>ד</b> הרעשתה ארץ פצמתה; רפה שבריה כי מטה׃<br/> <b>ה</b> הראית עמך קשה; השקיתנו יין תרעלה׃ <footer class=source>תהילים פרק ס</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>כד כנש דוד משרין ועבר על איגר סהדותא ואגיח עם ארם די עם צובא ומן בתר כן תב יואב ומחא ית אדומאי במישור מלחא ונפלו מן חיליהון דדוד ויואב תריסר אלפין.</p> <footer class=source>תרגום תהילים, ס:ב</footer></blockquote> While David's forces won against the Philistines, against Moav and against Aram (see תהילים סח for a poetic description of the miraculous victory in that war), Israel *lost* in the beginning of the war with Edom. I compare the war in Aram to 1967, and the war in Edom with 1973. Israel survived, but responded with a shocking brutality: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>טו</b> ויהי בהיות דוד את אדום בעלות יואב שר הצבא לקבר את החללים; ויך כל זכר באדום׃ <b>טז</b> כי ששת חדשים ישב שם יואב וכל ישראל עד הכרית כל זכר באדום׃</p> <footer class=source>מלכים א פרק יא</footer></blockquote> ---- So what is going on? We read this parsha and see that David fulfilled it, in part. But David doesn't know anything about שני המשיחים--במשיח הראשון שהוא דויד...ובמשיח האחרון שיעמוד מבניו, שמושיע את ישראל מיד בני עשי. David wants to bring about the אחרית הימים. There's no reason the process should take 3000 years. I propose that David is *intentionally* trying to fulfill the prophecy. He is the מלך המשיח, after all. {:he} ><em>ומחץ פאתי מואב</em>: זה דוד שהכה כל הפאות של מואב היינו אדום מדרום ועמון וארם מצפון ומכש״כ מואב עצמו. אלא נעשה מואב כאן מרכז של הנבואה כמובן לפי ענין השעה ----העמק דבר, במדבר כד:יז <figure lang="he"><blockquote lang="he"><p>והיה זרעך כעפר הארץ ופרצת ימה וקדמה וצפנה ונגבה; ונברכו בך כל משפחת האדמה ובזרעך׃</p> </blockquote><figcaption class="source"><span>בראשית פרק כח:יד</span></figcaption></figure> <figure lang="he"><blockquote lang="he"><p><em>והיה זרעך כעפר הארץ ופרצת</em>: אחר שיהיה זרעך כעפר הארץ…אז תפרוץ בארץ אשר אתה שוכב עליה בכל צד ימה וקדמה וצפונה ונגבה, כמו שהעיד באומרו (במדבר כד:יז) וְקַרְקַר כָּל בְּנֵי שֵׁת. </p> </blockquote><figcaption class="source"><span>ספורנו, בראשית כח:יד</span></figcaption></figure> And that is where David failed. >“[I]mmanentizing the eschaton” is Voegelin’s pejorative phrase for utopians who try to take the place of G-d in bringing about this final stage. --<a href="https://www.huffingtonpost.com/max-raskin/occupy-nyu_b_1406754.html">Max Raskin, <cite>Don’t Immanentize the Eschaton, Bro</cite></a> We cannot force נבואות of the אחרית הימים. We have specific מצוות to fulfill, and eschatological prophecies are up to ה׳. David learns this lesson; the end of פרק ח is: {:he} >וימלך דוד על כל ישראל; ויהי דוד עשה משפט וצדקה לכל עמו׃ --שמואל ב ח:טו And all those wars and all those spoils don't bring the בית המקדש any closer: {:he} >ותשלם כל המלאכה אשר עשה המלך שלמה בית ה׳; וַיָּבֵא שלמה את קדשי דוד אביו את הכסף ואת הזהב ואת הכלים נתן באצרות בית ה׳׃ --מלכים א ז:נא {:he} >ואולם ההקדשות אשר התנדב דוד אביו שם אותם באוצרות השם, וכאלו היה זה מכוון ממנו יתברך, כי כמו שלא רצה שדוד יבנה את הבית בימיו לפי שדמים רבים שפך, כן לא הסכים שיבנה אותו מהממון אשר אסף במלחמותיו משלל הגוים, אך שלמה שהיה איש שלום ומה שקבץ מהממון היה בשלום ובמישור הוא יבנה את הבית מזה הממון ולא מדבר אחר. --מלבי״ם, שם As the Rambam says, "Don't Immanentize the Eschaton": {:he} >ולעולם לא יתעסק אדם בדברי ההגדות, ולא יאריך בדברי מדרשות האמורים בעניינים אלו וכיוצא בהן...וכן לא יחשב הקיצין; אמרו חכמים, תפוח דעתן של מחשבי קיצין. --משנה תורה, הלכות מלכים ומלחמות יב:ה
