And that's the meaning of the next two psukim, טוב מעט ביראת ה׳ מאוצר רב ומהומה בו and טוב ארחת ירק ואהבה שם משור אבוס ושנאה בו. It's not about your attitude to your wealth; it's about your attitude toward others. It's what you do with that wealth that matters. Do you make others happy? It's not הַשָּׂמֵחַ בְּחֶלְקוֹ but הַמְּשַׂמֵחַ בְּחֶלְקוֹ. And then Shlomo returns to the theme of not inciting strife: {:he} >איש חמה יגרה מדון; וארך אפים ישקיט ריב׃ --משלי טו:יח Which sounds like a restatement of the previous מענה רך ישיב חמה; ודבר עצב יעלה אף but represents the escalation that leads to a vicious cycle. The first pasuk said that my angry words lead to your angry feelings, and this pasuk says that your angry feelings lead to arguments, more angry words. De-escalation requires a conscious effort by one of us, but, as my mother always used to say, "it takes two to tango". One side with ארך אפים can end the fight. And then we get to the end of this paragraph. It began back in פרק יג: {:he} >בן חכם מוסר אב; ולץ לא שמע גערה׃ --משלי יג:א ends with {:he} >דרך עצל כמשכת חדק; וארח ישרים סללה׃ --משלי טו:יט It's a statement that there aren't any shortcuts to ethics. Being lazy only makes things worse. {:he} > דרך הוא הרחב כמו שכתבנו, ואורח הוא אורח דחוק וקטנה. וכמו שכתוב המשל הגיע לפרשת דרכים...יש ב׳ דרכים: א׳, תחלה רחב ואחר כך מלא קוצים וברקנים, והשניה, אף שהיא תחילתה מצער אבל אחריתה ישגה מאוד ויהיה דרך סלולה. וזהו ”דרך“, כלומר הדרך רחב של העצל הוא אח״כ משוכח חדק, מלא קוצים וברקנים. ”ואורח ישרים“, כלומר הישרים שהולכים תחילה בדרך דחוקה וצערה וקצרה נפשם אבל היא...שאחר כך יהיה דרך סלולה. --פירוש הגר״א על משלי טו:יט {:he} >רבי יצחק בר רבי חיא אמר: הרשעים על ידי שתחלתן שלוה וסופן יסורין, פותחין בברכה וחותמין בקללה, (במדבר כד:ט) מְבָרְכֶיךָ בָרוּךְ וְאֹרְרֶיךָ אָרוּר. הצדיקים על ידי שתחלתן יסורין וסופן שלוה הם פותחין בקללה וחותמין בברכה, (בראשית כז:כט) אֹרְרֶיךָ אָרוּר וּֽמְבָרְכֶיךָ בָּרוּךְ. --בראשית רבה סו:ד It's a lesson in patience. ---- At the end of the first paragraph of book two of ספר משלי, in <//Horsefeathers>, I tried to find some consistent theme that tied the general sense of the paragraph together. This paragraph, 69 psukim long, also seems to be a random collection of proverbs. The two themes that dominate are the ethics of wealth and of maintaining self-control, and it's not clear how to connect them, and how to connect those with the coda: דרך עצל כמשכת חדק; וארח ישרים סללה. Love for wealth is a confused expression of a love of Divine providence. {:he} >רבי מכבד עשירים. רבי עקיבא מכבד עשירים. כדדרש רבא בר מרי (תהילים סא:ח): יֵשֵׁב עוֹלָם לִפְנֵי אֱלֹקִים; חֶסֶד וֶאֱמֶת מַן יִנְצְרֻהוּ—אימתי ישב עולם לפני אלקים? בזמן שחסד ואמת מן [רש״י: לשון מזונות] ינצרהו. --עירובין פו,א The definition of wealth is resources in excess of what one needs. ה׳ gives wealth to create the interdependence that is the hallmark of society. As we said in <//Money Can’t Buy Happiness>: {:he} >כפר נפש איש עשרו; ורש לא שמע גערה׃ --משלי יג:ח {:he} ><em>כפר נפש איש עשרו</em>: עשרו של אדם הוא כפר נפשו, שעשה ממנו צדקה. > <em>ורש לא שמע גערה</em>: ובלבד שלא ישמיע גערה לרש שנותן לו ואינו מכלימו. --רש״י,משלי יג:ח Your עושר is a כופר נפש if it increases your connection to others. If you are in a state of לא שמע גערה, not hearing the unhappiness of others, then you are a רש, a pauper. Your wealth does not define who you are; what you do with your wealth (whatever it may be) defines who you are. And losing control prevents you from being *you*. {:he} >כי תחלת שרש השתלשלות הממון, הוא מקום שהנפש באה משם, בבחינת (דברים כד:טו): וְאֵלָיו הוּא נוֹשֵׂא אֶת נַפְשׁוֹ, הנאמר על ממון של שכיר יום, וכמו שכתוב (איכה ה:ט): בְּנַפְשֵׁנוּ נָבִיא לַחְמֵנוּ, ועל כן הנפש מתאוה ותאב לו כנ"ל. ועל ידי כעס מאבד נפשו, בבחינת (איוב יח:ד): טוֹרֵף נַפְשׁוֹ בְּאַפּוֹ. --ליקוטי מוהר"ן סח:ב And that is the connection between anger and wealth (or rather the opposition between them). {:he} >ודע, שראוי שכל ישראל יהיו להם ממון, אך יש מדה אחת שמפסדת ומאבדת מהם הממון, והיא מדה רעה מגנה, שקשה מאד להנצל ממנה. ואפלו אם ירצה אחד להנצל ממנה, ובפרט בשביל תאות הממון, כדי שלא תפסיד לו את הממון, עם כל זה המדה רעה הזאת מתגברת עליו בילדותו ובקטנותו, ועל־ידי־זה מפסדת ממנו הממון שהיה ראוי שיהיה לו. > והמדה רעה ההיא הוא מדת הכעס, שעל־ידי־זה מפסיד ומאבד הממון הראוי לו. כי בבחינת שרש ההשתלשלות שמשתלשל הממון, ממקום שמשתלשל משם, הוא בחינה אחת עם הכעס ממש. --ליקוטי מוהר"ן סח:ב Our paragraph ends with the importance of patience, because that prevents anger and creates wealth. >Anger and urgency go hand in hand, for if I am powerful and in control, then I must ensure the outcome of each and every thing, urgently imposing my desire on external reality. Patience is the fruit of calmness, a cool, calm, and collected trust that what is taking place right here and right now will inevitably shift with the process of time. Aware of the infinite potential that the future holds, we allow ourselves to be patient, to see beyond what is towards our trust in what is to come. > Wealth is a state of mind, a perspectival shift that reshapes the reality within which I live. It is rooted in the highest imaginable point and it can descend into the lowest imaginable pit. “[Mishna Avot 4:1] Who is wealthy? One who finds joy within their portion.” Wealth is a relative orientation, but its true import is the calmness and patience that come from a settled mind. --Rabbi Joey Rosenfeld, [_Yaakov, Esav, and the Paradox of Money and Wealth_](https://18forty.org/articles/yaakov-esav-wealth/) Joey connects this to פרשת תולדות and Yitzchak's wealth: {:he} >ויזרע יצחק בארץ ההוא וימצא בשנה ההוא מאה שערים; ויברכהו ה׳׃ --בראשית כו:יב >In understanding the posture Yitzchak developed towards wealth, we will take our first step down the path of “/ashirus d’kedusha/,” a holy wealth and a wealth of holiness. Rather than seek out the visible and graspable capital that was available at hand, Yitzchak planted a seed. He took the little bit that he had and he let go of it, investing it in a place beyond himself. In the act of planting a seed, Yitzchak revealed a new path towards wealth, a path focused not on the immediate return, but rather on an action in the present with eyes on the future return. Rashi points out that the words “that year” and “that place” refer to the fact that there was nothing particularly remarkable about the time, nor the place that contributed to the emergent growth. But the growth was a hundredfold, as Rashi points out, the measured and expected return turned out to be a hundred times its value. > The original act of planting depends upon faith. /Zeraim/ is /emunah/—the willingness to trust that this act which externally appears to be a destructive one, will in truth one day yield a reward beyond its own value. Taking a seed and planting it ensures its decomposition, without receiving anything immediate in return. It is the trust in a future that has not yet arrived. And it is this trust itself that enables the future to take shape. This type of capital gain is not apparent at first glance, for it is the opposite of an immediate result. To grasp the possibility of growth, one must look twice. The first look sees the absence of immediate results, the seeming absence of value. Shlomo tells us: {:he} >שלח לחמך על פני המים; כי ברב הימים תמצאנו׃ --קוהלת יא:א >The future orientation towards capital gain developed by Yitzchak finds full expression in the life of Yaakov, as opposed to Esav. Cultivation of wealth takes two paths: the path of immediate gain and the path of future growth. Esav, “man of the field,” represents the first path, where the gain is realized immediately upon investment. Going out into the field to bring in the day’s keep, ready at hand. Yaakov, “man of the tent”, represents the second path, where the gain is cultivated and developed, choosing patience over immediate gratification... > It was this split in the posture towards wealth that led to Yaakov’s purchase of the birthright from Esav. The rights of being firstborn are reserved for the future, they only take shape at a point further down the road. To see the hidden light of the birthright one must have the vision to look beyond the immediate here and now, beyond instant gratification and delivery. One must look towards future growth and increase that is not yet present. Understanding Esav’s infantile perspective of immediate deliverance, Yaakov used his mistaken view to his benefit. Sell it to me today, as it is today. For the Esav mindsight, all there is is the immediate now—there is no value in the hope of future growth. The product needs to be ready at hand, immediately apparent. Yaakov understands the secret of long-term investment, he received it from Yitzchak.
