פרק יב continues: {:he} ><b>כא</b> לא יאנה לצדיק כל און; ורשעים מלאו רע׃ --משלי יב:כא יאנה means "will not be caused to". {:he} ><em>לא יאונה לצדיק כל און</em>: פעל אנה הוא שמכין סבה למסובב, כמו (שמות כא:יג) [וַאֲשֶׁר לֹא צָדָה] וְהָאֱלֹקִים אִנָּה לְיָדוֹ; שמי שעשה עבירה הוא סבה לשיעשה עבירה אחרת. --מלבי"ם, משלי יב:כא That is summed up in the Mishna: {:he} >בן עזאי אומר: הוי רץ למצוה קלה כבחמורה, ובורח מן העברה. שמצוה גוררת מצוה, ועברה גוררת עברה. ששכר מצוה, מצוה. ושכר עברה, עברה. --משנה אבות ד:ב The fact that a צדיק will not do an און, that מצוה גוררת מצוה, is not that the צדיק does not have free will. It is that most of our behavior is habit and not consciously decided. So we need to get used to doing the right thing, so it becomes automatic. {:he} >דאמר רב הונא, כיון שעבר אדם עבירה ושנה בה, הותרה לו. הותרה לו סלקא דעתך?! אלא אימא: נעשית לו כהיתר. --יומא פו,ב And that is the value of virtue ethics: being a good person means you will do good things. Here Shlomo adds אדם ערום כסה דעת, a sophisticated thinker will conceal what they know, since they know that they really know nothing.  --detail from SMBC, [_2012-02-05_](http://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/2012-02-05) There is concept of צניעות, which isn't about sleeve length and knees but about humility. {:he} >הגיד לך אדם מה טוב; ומה ה׳ דורש ממך כי אם עשות משפט ואהבת חסד והצנע לכת עם אלקיך׃ --מיכה ו:ח משלי used that term (it is the only other place in תנ״ך that it appears): {:he} > בא זדון ויבא קלון; ואת צנועים חכמה׃ --משלי יא:ב And in this context it clearly means "humility", in the sense of being willing to listen to others: {:he} ><em>ועם הצנועים תבא חכמה</em>: כי לא יקבעו דרכי החכמה רק בלב המאמין ומקבל ושומע לרבותיו ולא יזיד לחלוק עליהם, אבל כשבא הזדון בא עמו קלון, שהוא הפך הכבוד, כי דרכיו שבוחר בהם הם נקלים והפך דרכי החכמה המכובדים. --מלבי"ם, משלי יא:ב And so it leads to wisdom: {:he} >אמר רבי חנינא ענתנייה: ברית כרותה היא היגע תלמודו בצנעה לא במהרה הוא משכח. מה טעם? וְאֶת צְנוּעִים חָכְמָה. --ירושלמי ברכות ה:א The כסילים are who are sure of themselves, who can't be כסה דעת, and they effectively are declaring that they are אַוִּלִּים, foolish in the sense of knowing the right thing to do but not doing it. ---- {:he} ><b>כד</b> יד חרוצים תמשול; ורמיה תהיה למס׃ --משלי יב:כד חרוץ is translated as "diligent", those who work hard and honestly. {:he} ><em>יד חרוצים תמשול</em>: החרוץ נאמר הפך העצל והפך הרמאי, והוא העושה מלאכתו בלי עצלות רק בחריצות וביושר שלא ע"י הרמיה, ואינו אץ להעשיר פתאום בלא יגיעה, כמ"ש (משלי כא:ה) מַחְשְׁבוֹת חָרוּץ אַךְ לְמוֹתָר. --מלבי"ם, משלי יב:כד And רמיה is the opposite, usually translated as "deceit", but I think it would be better translated as "negligent", not bothering to do things right, with יושר. They are trying to get ahead, but will end up serving the חרוצים.‎ תהיה למס is a תנ״ך idiom for being subject to another: {:he} >איכה ישבה בדד העיר רבתי עם היתה כאלמנה; רבתי בגוים שרתי במדינות היתה למס׃ --איכה א:א And they will be למס because they are afraid of being caught. {:he} ><em>תהיה למס</em>: תירא את הבריות ותכנע להם, פן תהיה לבוז ויכלימוהו במעשיו, או תגבר ידם ויגישוהו אל המשפט, ויזכו עמו בדין מן החמס אשר בכפיו. או יחייבו את ראשו למלך, אם יקומו עדים על דברי חמסו ומרמותיו. --רבינו יונה, משלי יב:כד [Rabbi Shaya Katz](https://www.sefaria.org/sheets/297019?lang=bi) says that רמיה, comes from what Carol Dweck calls a “fixed” mindset: “Fixed mindset people try to gain success by any means necessary to justify how they're perceived, but they're also afraid of criticism, as it detracts from the same image they're trying to maintain”. >Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, in her book [_Mindset_](https://www.amazon.com/Mindset-Psychology-Carol-S-Dweck/dp/0345472322), argues that it makes a decisive difference whether we believe that our abilities are innate and determined once and for all (the “fixed” mindset), or whether we may assume that talent is something we achieve through time by effort, practice and persistence (the “growth” mindset). People who take the former approach tend to be risk-averse, afraid that if they fail this will show that they are not as good as they were thought to be. You can only recognize the dysfunctional thoughts and practice thinking *something else*. Rashi, in an almost chassidic interpretation, adds another strategy for dealing with anxiety: {:he} >ולדברי האומר יַשְׁׂחֶנָּה לאחרים, כך סופו של מקרא ודבר טוב שינחמנו חבירו ישמח את הדאגה. --רש״י, משלי יב:כה And it goes with the previous pasuk. It is דאגה that leads to רמיה. Having the confidence not to be afraid of failure allows you to be חרוץ. ---- The paragraph concludes, contrasting the חרוץ and רמיה again: {:he .lines} ><b>כו</b> יתר מרעהו צדיק; ודרך רשעים תתעם׃ <b>כז</b> לא יחרך רמיה צידו; והון אדם יקר חרוץ׃ <b>כח</b> בארח צדקה חיים; ודרך נתיבה אַל מות׃ --משלי פרק יב פסוק כז is what seems to me to be an odd metaphor: the רמיה "will not roast his meat". {:he} ><em>לא יחרוך</em>: מחובר למקרא שלפניו כלומר דרך רשע תתעהו ולא יחרוך את צידו של רמיה שלו. > לא יצליח בתרמיתו ולפי שדבר בלשון ציד נופל בו לשון חריכה, שהציד המצליח צד את העופות וחורכן באש. --רש״י, משלי יב:כז So, the רמיה will not achieve their goal, while the חרוץ will get הון אדם יקר, wealth valued by all people. Artscroll translates יתר מרעהו as "excels over his fellow", taking יתר as יוֹתֵר, “more than”, but Ralbag translates the מ־ as "from"; a צדיק is one who benefits from others, by learning from them. {:he} ><em>יתר מרעהו צדיק</em>: צדיק הוא לוקח יתרון ומעלה מרעהו כי ילמד ממנו מעלה ושלימות. --רלב"ג, משלי יב:כו And that connects to another way of translating יתר: {:he} ><em>יתר</em>: שרשו ”תור“, שבא על הריגול שמעיין על מרעהו. --מלבי"ם באור המילות, משלי יב:כו, פירוש ראשון {:he} ><em>יתר מרעהו צדיק</em>: הצדיק לא יסמך על דרכו בעצמו כי חושש פן תועה בדרכו, כי הצדיק אינו חכם דוקא, ר"ל לא למד חקי החכמה מרבותיו רק מתנהג כפי החכמה בהרגלו במעשה הצדק ע"י שימוש, וע"י שרואה מעשה צדיקים והנהגתם, והוא תר ומעיין את רעהו. --מלבי"ם, משלי יב:כו לתור means "to scout", to find a path: {:he} >ויסעו מהר ה׳ דרך שלשת ימים; וארון ברית ה׳ נסע לפניהם דרך שלשת ימים לתור להם מנוחה׃ --במדבר י:לג We have this use of תור in the story of the spies: {:he} ><b>א</b> וידבר ה׳ אל משה לאמר׃ <b>ב</b> שלח לך אנשים ויתרו את ארץ כנען אשר אני נתן לבני ישראל; איש אחד איש אחד למטה אבתיו תשלחו כל נשיא בהם׃...<b>כא</b> ויעלו ויתרו את הארץ ממדבר צן עד רחב לבא חמת׃...<b>לב</b> ויציאו דבת הארץ אשר תרו אתה אל בני ישראל לאמר; הארץ אשר עברנו בה לתור אתה ארץ אכלת יושביה הוא וכל העם אשר ראינו בתוכה אנשי מדות׃ --במדבר פרק יג {:he} ><b>ו</b> ויהושע בן נון וכלב בן יפנה מן התרים את הארץ קרעו בגדיהם׃...<b>לד</b> במספר הימים אשר תרתם את הארץ ארבעים יום יום לשנה יום לשנה תשאו את עונתיכם ארבעים שנה; וידעתם את תנואתי׃ --במדבר פרק יד So ה׳ warns us about the dangers of being תרים: {:he} ><b>לז</b> ויאמר ה׳ אל משה לאמר׃ <b>לח</b> דבר אל בני ישראל ואמרת אלהם ועשו להם ציצת על כנפי בגדיהם לדרתם; ונתנו על ציצת הכנף פתיל תכלת׃ <b>לט</b> והיה לכם לציצת וראיתם אתו וזכרתם את כל מצות ה׳ ועשיתם אתם; ולא תתורו אחרי לבבכם ואחרי עיניכם אשר אתם זנים אחריהם׃ --במדבר פרק טו In the metaphor of משלי, we are all tourists in a world we don't really understand. We take our cues from others, but we can decide who it is that we are observing and following. Stick to the ארח צדקה and we will survive.
