Kavanot: Smooth Rock

מד means a cloak but has the added significance of "measurement"—it has to fit perfectly. The fact that the נביא felt it necessary to emphasize that Saul's cloak fit David is significant:

Whether or not we take the midrash literally that the clothing grew to fit David, it is clear that he appeared "kingly"; he was no longer the shepherd boy who played the lyre. Saul noticed the change, and the rumors (as we discussed, it is unclear how public it was) of David's anointing by Samuel became very clearly real.
<h3>קיין עין־הרע</h3>
David's reaction is interesting: ויאל ללכת כי לא נסה ויאמר דוד אל שאול לא אוכל ללכת באלה כי לא נסיתי.‎ ויאל means "to want", as in (שמות ב:כא)‎ ויואל משה לשבת את האיש.‎ מלבי״ם translates, "David wanted to go [with Saul's armor] because he had never tried them [and didn't realize how hard it was, but found he couldn't] and said, 'I cannot go with these because I never tried to before.'"
The Targum translates ויאל as לא אבא—he did not want to go, since he had never learned how. רש״י mentions this translation and that there are many words that mean their own opposites (like dust or cleave in English), but ends with a translation like מלבי״ם's.
The ילקוט שמעוני has a very interesting interpretation; generally like מלבי״ם (David wanted to wear the armor) but he realized the עין הרע he was creating and quickly removed it, with לא נסיתי only an excuse.
<h3>Water on the Rock</h3>
The מפרשים only note David's חלקי אבנים to say that the rocks worn smooth by the water would be good for slinging, but I am reminded of the parable that would become famous through רבי עקיבא:

פעם אחת היה עומד על פי הבאר.
אמר, מי חקק אבן זו,
אמרו לו, המים שתדיר נופלים עליה בכל יום.
אמרו לו, עקיבא אי אתה קורא (איוב יד:יט) "אבנים שחקו מים",
מיד היה רבי עקיבא דן קל וחומר בעצמו:
מה רך פסל את הקשה, דברי תורה שקשה כברזל על אחת כמה וכמה שיחקקו את לבי שהוא בשר ודם.
מיד חזר ללמוד תורה.

<h3>Theodicy</h3>
It's time to look at David's approach to his enemies, through the eyes of תהילים.
The טעמי המקרא—the "trope", the ancient Biblical punctuation, is consistent through all of תנ״ך. There are three exceptions: the books of איוב,‎ משלי‎ and תהילים. Together they are called ספרי אמ״ת, and they have a more elaborate system of טעמים. Calling them books of "אמת" is clearly significant, but what do they have in common that separates them from other "philosophical" books like קוהלת? My answer is that these books are the ones that deal, as their major focus, with the fundamental question of Jewish philosophy, צדיק ורע לו, why do bad things happen to good people. There are three classical Jewish answers, given in these three books:

<li>ה׳'s wisdom and plan is too deep for human beings to understand. He is good, but in our limited perspective we may not comprehend His goodness. This is expressed in איוב.</li>
<li>The evil that befalls the good and the reward of the wicked are just; everything that happens to a person is deserved. Bad things that happen to good people is because of the (possibly minor) sins they have committed. This is expressed in משלי. We have the concept of עולם הבא where the accounts will finally be settled and the righteous will achieve their true reward.</li>
<li>גם זו לטובה. What seems to be a bad thing will be seen to actually to have been for a person's benefit, not in some vague unknowable sense, but within the person's own experience. This is the approach of תהילים.</li>
</ol>
The contrast with קהלת is telling. קהלת deals with the question of man's purpose in the world; it ends with the line (קוהלת יב:יג)‎ סוף דבר הכל נשמע את האלקים ירא ואת מצותיו שמור. The other books start from that assumption, that the purpose of existence is fear of G-d. For instance, (תהילים קיא:י)‎ ראשית חכמה יראת ה׳ and (משלי פרק ט:י)‎ תחלת חכמה יראת ה׳ and (איוב פרק כח:כח)‎ ויאמר לאדם הן יראת ה׳ היא חכמה; וסור מרע בינה׃.
None of these approaches are completely satisfactory, of course; if there were an easy answer it would not be a hard question. But throughout תהילים we see David's view of the vicissitudes of life.
