משלי book 2, section 2 starts with a familiar image: the בן חכם. {:he} > בן חכם מוסר אב; ולץ לא שמע גערה׃ --משלי יג:א The first half of the pasuk is missing a verb, and Rashi assumes it should be "desires". {:he} ><em>בן חכם מוסר אב</em>: מקרא קצר הוא: בן חכם *שואל ואוהב* מוסר אב... --רש״י, משלי יג:א Rashi's second opinion is that the phrase is a copula: the two halves are linked; a בן חכם *is* one with מוסר אב. Therefore, the לץ, the cynic, is the one who rejects מוסר אב, and is the opposite of the חכם. {:he} >{:he} ><em>בן חכם מוסר אב</em>:...ויש אומרים: *בשביל* מוסר האב הוא חכם. > <em>ולץ</em>: לא שמע גערה שאינו מקבל תוכחות. --רש״י, משלי יג:א The GRA interprets this pasuk like Rashi's second opinion, but he places the emphasis on the father. Giving mussar produces wise children: {:he} ><em>בן חכם מוסר אב</em>: שמה שהבן חכם הוא מחמת מוסר אב שאביו היה מיישרו ומדריכו בדרך ישרה ולא חשך שבטו ממנו. > <em>ולץ לא שמע גערה</em>: ומה שהבן הוא לץ הוא מחמת שלא שמע גערה מאביו מעולם כי דרך הנער שלא יקבל טוב עד שמייסרהו. אבל מכל מקום לא היה לץ אם היה שומע גערה וע״כ לא גער אביו בו ועזבו לילך בדרך לבו. --פירוש הגר״א, משלי יג:א But the ambiguity of the phrase allows for the more direct reading: בן חכם מוסר אב; the child of a wise person *is* their father's mussar. We know the old joke: >Insanity is hereditary. You can get it from your children. --[Sam Levenson](https://quoteinvestigator.com /2015/09/11/insanity/) Shlomo could be read as "Wisdom is hereditary. You can get it from your children." We can learn so much from our children. The best way to learn patience is to raise children. The best way to learn to give without expectation of reward is to raise children. The חכם is the person who listens to the מוסר that their בן is offering, if we can only hear it. Responding with sarcasm, the לץ, doesn't hear the תוכחות and the feedback we get from our children. It's not the straightforward reading of the pasuk but it offers a perspective that subverts our expectations from reading ספר משלי so far. Shlomo isn't just repeating himself; he's offering variations on previous themes. ---- The next pasuk also subverts our expectations. {:he} >מפרי פי איש יאכל טוב; ונפש בגדים חמס׃ --משלי יג:ב We've seen a very similar pasuk in the last perek. {:he} >מפרי פי איש ישבע טוב; וגמול ידי אדם [ישוב] יָשִׁיב לו׃ --משלי יב:יד And Rashi understands פרי פי איש as a reference to learning Torah: {:he} ><em>מפרי פי איש</em>: משכר פיהם של עוסקי תורה, אוכלים טוב בעולם הזה, והקרן קימת להם לעולם הבא. --רש״י, משלי יב:יד And so he interprets here: {:he} ><em>מפרי פי איש יאכל טוב</em>: משכר תורתו יאכל טוב בעולם הזה, והקרן קימת לעולם הבא. --רש״י, משלי יג:ב Rashi is assuming the connection to the well-known mishna: {:he} >אלו דברים שאדם אוכל פירותיהן בעולם הזה והקרן קיימת לו לעולם הבא: כיבוד אב ואם, וגמילות חסדים, והבאת שלום בין אדם לחברו; ותלמוד תורה כנגד כולם. --משנה פאה א:א Obviously the mishna came well after the pasuk, so Rashi is assuming that the mishna is interpreting the pasuk. But then the second half of the pasuk doesn't seem relevant. {:he} ><em>ונפש בגדים חמס</em>: וחפץ בוגדים חמס, כמו (בראשית כג:ח) אִם יֵשׁ אֶת נַפְשְׁכֶם, (תהלים כז:יב) אַל תִּתְּנֵנִי בְּנֶפֶשׁ צָרָי. --רש״י, משלי יג:ב So the GRA assumes the missing verb in the second half is the יאכל from the first half: ונפש בגדים יאכל חמס. {:he} ><em>מפרי פי איש יאכל טוב</em>: טוב שהפירות של הצדיק אינן נותנין לעוה״ז אא״כ הוא טוב לבריות אז נותנין לו הפירות וזהו מפרי פי איש שהצדיק נקרא ”איש“...ועיקר הפירות הוא מתלמוד תורה שהוא כנגד כולם, לכן אמר מפרי פי איש יאכל *אם הוא* טוב. > <em>ונפש בגדים חמס</em>: אבל הבוגדים יאכלו החמס אשר בפיהם והוא החמס דברים...ואמר ”ונפש בגדים“ לומר שהעיקר החמס דברים יאכל הנפש שהוא בעוה״ב וכאן מעט מפירותיהן. --פירוש הגר״א, משלי יג:ב The subversion is the idea that learning Torah isn't really something that we "eat the fruits of" in this world, if it is purely intellectual. Without the moral side, learning Torah is otherworldly, only לעולם הבא.‎ תלמוד תורה כנגד כולם means that real תלמוד תורה is learning that leads to כיבוד אב ואם, וגמילות חסדים, והבאת שלום בין אדם לחברו. {:he} >וכל המצוות שבין אדם לחבירו נכנסות בגמילות חסדים, ושים לבך עליהם כי כן תמצאם, שהרי הלל הזקן (שבת לא א) כשאמר לו הגוי: ”למדני תורה על רגל אחד“, אמר לו: ”דעלך ביש, לחברך לא תעביד“. וכשתחקור על העניין הזה, תמצא תלמוד תורה שוקל כנגד הכל, כי בתלמוד תורה יזכה האדם לכל זה, כמו שביארנו בתחילת דברינו, *שהתלמוד מביא לידי מעשה*. --פירוש הרמב"ם, משנה פאה א:א and the ונפש בגדים חמס also refers to the negative "fruits" of our interpersonal relationships. {:he} >וכנגדן ארבעה דברים שהן נפרעין מן האדם בעולם הזה והקרן קיימת לו לעולם הבא. ואילו הן עבודה זרה וגילוי עריות ושפיכות דמים. ולשון הרע כנגד כולן. --ירושלמי פאה א:א This concept, of an asset that isn't really owned but from which we can live off the interest, has a legal term: usufruct, "using the fruits". We don't own other people and ethically cannot use them as a means to an end, then all our relationships with others is usufruct, שאדם אוכל פירותיהן בעולם הזה. And all of those connect back to the definition of a human being. {:he} >וייצר ה׳ אלקים את האדם עפר מן האדמה ויפח באפיו נשמת חיים; ויהי האדם לנפש חיה׃ --בראשית ב:ז {:he} >וּבְרָא יְיָ אֱלֹקִים יָת אָדָם עַפְרָא מִן אַדְמְתָא וּנְפַח בְּאַפּוֹהִי נִשְׁמְתָא דְחַיֵּי; וַהֲוַת בְּאָדָם לְרוּחַ מְמַלְלָא׃ --תרגום אונקלוס,בראשית ב:ז Human beings *communicate*. That communication is the basis of all other ethical judgments. {:he} >אמר רבי שמעון בן גמליאל לטבי עבדיה פוק זבין לי צדו טבא מן שוקא, נפק זבן ליה לשן, אמר ליה פוק זבין לי צדו בישא מן שוקא, נפק זבן ליה לשן. אמר ליה מהו דין דכד אנא אמר לך צדו טבא את זבן לי לשן, וכד אנא אמר לך צדו בישא את זבן לי לשן. אמר ליה מינה טבתא ומינה בישתא, כד הוה טב לית טבה מניה, וכד ביש לית ביש מניה. --ויקרא רבה לג:א So מפרי פי איש יאכל טוב: if you want to אכל טוב, be careful of פרי פי איש. ---- And so Shlomo continues with: {:he} > נצר פיו שמר נפשו: פֹּשֵׂק שפתיו מחתה לו׃ --משלי יג:ג This is an allusion to תהילים: {:he} >נצר לשונך מרע; ושפתיך מדבר מרמה׃ --תהילים לד:יד and we ask ה׳ for the strength to guard our mouths: {:he} >אלקי נצור לשוני מרע ושפתי מדבר מרמה. --תחינה אחרי עמידה The GRA notes that Shlomo here is not contrasting רע with מרמה, he is contrasting נצירה, shutting ones mouth, with פשק, opening it wide. It's not so much *what* you say, it's the idea that you need to limit your talking. זריזות means "Engage your brain before putting your mouth in gear". {:he} >כיון שהנפש בוגדים יאכל החמס אשר בפיהן, לכן הנוצר פיו שומר נפשו. ועוד שהפיו הוא השמירה לכל הנפש, ולכן אמרו המקובלים כאשר האדם בכעס ילך ממנו הנפש הטוב... > אבל מי שמרחיב שפתיו אע״פ שיש לו נפש טוב ועושה מצות הרבה וכמה גדרים, פיו יהיה לו מחתה לכל. --פירוש הגר״א, משלי יג:ג ---- And so we return to the חריץ, the one who is diligent in how they relate to others. They take others seriously. {:he} > מתאוה וָאַיִן נפשו עצל; ונפש חרצים תְּדֻשָּֽׁן׃ --משלי יג:ד {:he} ><em>מתאוה ואין נפשו עצל</em>: העצל הוא ההיפוך מן החרוץ שעושה מלאכה בזריזות וחריצות, והנה העצל שאינו רוצה לעמול במלאכה בל תאמר שאין לו תאוה...רק שידיו ורגליו ואבריו בלתי שומעים לנפשו למלאת רצונה...ורצה לומר העצל נפשו מתאוה, ואין. אבל החרוצים הגם שמיגעים גופם במלאכה, נפשם תדושן, כי יש להם כל תאותם. > והנמשל העצל מלעסוק בחכמה נפשו הרוחנית מתאוה ואין והיא תמות מיתת עולם על שידיו בלתי משרתים לנפשו הרוחנית. והחרוץ הגם שמיגע גופו, נפשו הרוחנית תדושן מדשן בית ה' ונחל עדניו תשתה. --מלבי״ם, משלי יג:ד {:he} >ואמר רבי יצחק, אם יאמר לך אדם: יגעתי ולא מצאתי—אל תאמן. לא יגעתי ומצאתי—אל תאמן. יגעתי ומצאתי—תאמן. הני מילי בדברי תורה, אבל במשא ומתן—סייעתא הוא מן שמיא. --מגילה ו,ב תדשן, from the root דשן (abundance, fertilizer), is variously translated as "richly supplied" (Koren), "abundantly gratified" (JPS 1917), "feast on rich fare" (JPS 1985). It's the opposite of the עצל who is מתאוה ואין. It means being full, in the sense of having one's desires fullfilled. ה׳ is offering you a guarantee: being diligent (as we said last time, taking our words seriously; זריזות in our interpersonal relationships) will lead to fulfillment, Aristotle's eudaimonia.  --detail from SMBC, [_Flourishing_](https://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/flourishing) ---- But all that depends on how we speak to others. {:he} > דבר שקר ישנא צדיק: ורשע יבאיש ויחפיר׃ --משלי יג:ה זריזות isn't about how we fulfill our מצוות בין אדם למקום; it's about our בין אדם לחבירו. Our fulfillment fundamentally comes from how we speak to others; תורה and גמילות חסדים on the one hand and לשון הרע and שקר and מרמה (which we translated not as lying but as not taking speech seriously) on the other. A society based on לשון הרע can never progress. >A “Gossip Trap” is when...to organize your society you are forced to discuss mostly people. It is [_Mean Girls_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mean_Girls) (and mean boys), but forever. And yes, gossip can act as a leveling mechanism and social power has a bunch of positives—it’s the stuff of life, really. But it’s a terrible way to organize society. So perhaps we leveled ourselves into the ground for 90,000 years. Being in the Gossip Trap means reputational management imposes such a steep slope you can’t climb out of it, and essentially prevents the development of anything interesting, like art or culture or new ideas or new developments or anything at all. Everyone just lives like crabs in a bucket, pulling each other down. All cognitive resources go to reputation management in the group, leaving nothing left in the tank for invention or creativity or art or engineering. It's much easier to be a צדיק with strangers than with the members of our own family, so we have to work that much harder to care about our family. And so, בן חכם מוסר אב. The child of a wise person is a lesson to them.
