Kavanot: Horsefeathers

We've talked about the structure of ספר משלי before; it is composed of three "books", each of which start with the introduction of  משלי שלמה, and two "appendices" , דברי  אגור בן יקה and דברי  למואל. The first book, פרקים א-ט, has a relatively straightforward theme: the importance of חכמה, ethical wisdom (which we translated as phronesis). That book used the metaphor of חכמה as a woman calling to a young man, and the אשה זרה also trying to seduce him, acknowledging that other societies have ethical wisdom as well but we need to learn our virtues from the Torah.

But the second book, פרקים י-כד, is harder to figure out. There doesn't seem to be any consistency between the verses or any central theme or metaphor. It consists of three long paragraphs starting with בן חכם, then two long paragraphs that start describing the כסיל, then a paragraph about the דל and four short paragraphs that seem like appendices. We learned the first paragraph, פרקים י-יב, as individual proverbs, but I wanted to find some kind of unifying theme. I failed.

Broadly speaking, there are six kinds of proverbs in this section: verses that deal with חכמה (or synonyms like בינה), verses that deal with צדק (or synonyms), verses that emphasize the value of not expressing feelings (I call those צניעות), verses that deal with honesty and diligence (אמת and חריצות), verses that speak of the virtuous אשה, and verses that sound like common sayings. I tried color coding things to look for patterns:

There doesn't seem to be much structure there. It is clear that the majority of the psukim (46 of 91) are about the צדיק. That's very different from book one, which is all about חכמה. The difference is that חכמה is rational; it comes from human intellect and as such, Jews don't have any greater claim to it than any other intellectual culture.

And to understand the implications of חכמה-based ethics, it's worth looking at the other source of Western ethics: Greece.

>Let us again return to the good we are seeking, and ask what it can be. It seems different in different actions and arts; it is different in medicine, in strategy, and in the other arts likewise. What then is the good of each? Surely that for whose sake everything else is done...

Now such a thing happiness [εὐδαιμονία], above all else, is held to be; for this we choose always for self and never for the sake of something else, but honour, pleasure, reason, and every virtue we choose indeed for themselves (for if nothing resulted from them we should still choose each of them), but we choose them also for the sake of happiness, judging that by means of them we shall be happy. Happiness, on the other hand, no one chooses for the sake of these, nor, in general, for anything other than itself.

Aristole starts with the perfectly reasonable assumption that everyone wants what they want. Some of the things they want are merely tools to get other things, but there must be some ultimate "wanted thing". That ultimate goal he calls εὐδαιμονία (eudemonia, from the Greek words for "good spirit"), which is translated above as "happiness" but is better translated as "fulfillment".  A wise person is someone who knows what their eudemonia is, and can avoid being distracted by less important things. An ethical person, for Aristotle, is one whose eudemonia comes from virtue, ἀρετή (arete). And virtues are determined by the society they live in. Shlomo's argument in book one is that your virtues as a Jew must come from the Torah.

Aristotle takes it as a given that people like being virtuous:

>Their [people who act with virtue] life is also in itself pleasant. For pleasure is a state of
soul, and to each man that which he is said to be a lover of is pleasant;
e.g. not only is a horse pleasant to the lover of horses, and a spectacle
to the lover of sights, but also in the same way just acts are pleasant
to the lover of justice and in general virtuous acts to the lover
of virtue...Their life, therefore, has no
further need of pleasure as a sort of adventitious charm, but has
its pleasure in itself...[V]irtuous actions must be in themselves pleasant.

And that sums up Aristotle's ethics: be a good person and you will live a fulfilled (happy) life. It is fundamentally selfish, but that's not inherently a bad thing. It can lead to being good to others. As Rav Shkop says, we can expand our definition of "self" to include the whole world, and so we live dedicated to the happiness of the world. That is the ethics of חכמה.

Again, this is not immoral by any sense of the word. The rich and powerful should still want a just world in which the poor and powerless are treated justly, because fortunes change and we never know what position we will find ourselves.

The strongest expression of this is John Rawls's theory of justice.

We therefore need to imagine ourselves in a situation before any particular society exists; Rawls calls this situation the Original Position...

When we are thinking about justice, Rawls suggests that we imagine that we do not know many of the facts--both about ourselves and the society we currently live in--that typically influence our thinking in biased ways. That's certainly moral, ethical and just. But without some absolute standard of right and wrong, those virtues are unmoored and can end up immoral, unethical and unjust. Ethics needs G-d.

So Shlomo tells us in book one that חכמה starts with יראת ה׳.

But that's not enough. Ethics from יראה is still selfish.

So Shlomo introduces the צדיק: the one who acts ethically because they are the עושה דבריו מאהבה. It's a variation on the Euthyphro dilemma: do we act morally because it is good, or because G-d commanded it? As religious Jews, we assume that if we always 
act to fulfill רצון ה׳, then we will always to the right thing. 
But that violates וְאָהַבְתָּ לְרֵעֲךָ כָּמוֹךָ. It means treating others as a means, not an end, not as independent beings with moral worth but as tools for עבודת ה׳.

גמילות חסדים should be done in the spirit of *denying* רצון ה׳.

Rav Wolbe talks about the dangers of /frumkeit/.

From the perspective of our relationships בין אדם לחברו, the צדיק, the one who acts from אהבת ה׳, is selfish as well.

So we have a dialectic. I think the synthesis comes from third aspect of ספר משלי that opens and closes our paragraph:

Shlomo is 
contrasting חריצות (diligence) with רמיה (or מרמה, deceit). This is clearly related to the contrast between אמת and שקר which also figures prominently in our paragraph. We talked about (in <//Honesty is the Best Policy>) that human beings can't know אמת, so it's more about sincerity than honesty. But חריצות isn't the opposite of deceiving.

So I think that Shlomo is not using מרמה to mean "lying" or "deceit", because that still implies that the liar cares about the truth; he's just saying the opposite. מרמה here is orthogonal to truth and falsehood. It's like Elie Wiesel's famous quote:

>The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference...The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference.

There is a very specific English word for this, the reckless disregard for the truth. Unfortunately, I can't bring myself to say or even write it. Its initials are B-S and when I asked Grok for an appropriate synonym, it couldn't come up with a good one. The title of this shiur, "Horsefeathers" is a nicely archaic euphemism, and the best common word it could come up with is "claptrap". They are all jocular terms, because it represents the attitude of not taking anything seriously. It is the opposite of זריזות (which is the way Rashi translated חרוצים).

Ramchal says זריזות applies to how we do מצוות:

But I think Shlomo's message is different.

This paragraph is about taking things seriously. A חכם takes thinking seriously. A צדיק takes רצון ה׳ seriously. And a חריץ takes other people seriously. And that is what it takes to be a good person.

There are 16 psukim that I've classified as "common proverbs". Those deserve closer analysis, but I'm not sure what to do with them.  Things like (משלי יב:כה)‎ דאגה בלב איש ישחנה; ודבר טוב ישמחנה are indubitably true but they don't fit in my scheme of ethical and moral lessons.

There are three psukim that I think tie the whole section together.

Shlomo likes his אשה metaphors, and here we have the אשת חן and אשת חיל as positive models, and the אשה יפה וסרת טעם as the negative. Note the grammar: אשת חן and אשת חיל are "a woman *of* grace" and "a woman *of* valor"; those are part of her identity. אשה יפה is "a beautiful woman"; יפה is an adjective, something superficial.

That may be true for literal women (and literal men), but this is ספר משלי. This is a metaphor (we talked about this in <//Lipstick on a Pig>).

The metaphee is the human נפש, in this context the sense of self. You have to take *yourself* seriously for any moral development to be possible.

And ironically, this apparently most selfish idea allows us to be truly selfless.
