We have talked about קנאה as a bad character trait, but it is not explicitly forbidden, the way חמדה is. I have defined קנאה as mimetic desire (based on René Girard). As human beings, social primates, we want what other people want. That can lead to conflict but it can also drive our self-improvement. {:he} >קנאת סופרים תרבה חכמה. --בבא בתרא כא,ב But חמדה is a sin, one of the עשרת הדברות: {:he} >לא תחמד בית רעך; > לא תחמד אשת רעך ועבדו ואמתו ושורו וחמרו וכל אשר לרעך׃ --שמות כ:יג That is because חמדה is when I not only want what you have, but I also pressure you into giving it to me: {:he} >כל החומד עבדו או אמתו או ביתו וכליו של חבירו או דבר שאפשר לו שיקנהו ממנו והכביר עליו ברעים והפציר בו עד שלקחו ממנו אף על פי שנתן לו דמים רבים הרי זה עובר בלא תעשה שנאמר לא תחמוד. --משנה תורה, הלכות גזילה ואבידה א:ט Shlomo is telling us that we need to meet our needs through legitimate means, עבד אדמתו ישבע לחם. I need to work my own field. But that's not the way we have understood ערמה in משלי; elsewhere in תנ״ך it means cleverness in a negative way (נחש היה ערום) but in this sefer we have translated it as sophistication, (משלי א:ד)‎ לתת לפתאים ערמה. After training, participants reported less anxiety, negative affect, and depression with the latter benefit persisting at 3 months. Every declarative statement we make has limitations and conditions. A statement of absolute Truth must encompass the entire universe, past, present and future, and all possible aspects of reality. In the aggadah, ה׳'s will is Ethical Truth, which we cannot know (we don't know all the rules and all the consequences of our actions), so ה׳ gives us, as an act of חסד, the right to make decisions, בעניני הדת רק כפי הסכמת חכמי התורה, למטה בארץ. G-d's Knowing *is* reality. We, limited human beings, with our primitive monkey brains, have models for reality in our minds and "real" reality is something separate and much larger than that. Sometimes there is some correspondence between our internal models and reality. But that isn't "knowlege" in the same sense. The only thing we really know is that we exist; that's Descartes's famous aphorim: {:la} >Cogito, ergo sum. --[René Descartes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cogito,_ergo_sum) Because in that case, the knower is the knowledge is the thing known, the {:la}/intellectus/, the {:la}/intelligens/, and the {:la}/intelligibile/. For anything else, we have to be skeptics. >According to Academic Scepticism [{:la}/sic/]...there is a single fixed standard that must be met in order to have knowledge (we must have an infallibly correct impression of the thing judged). That leads to some very boring conversation. But what about all the other things we know to be true? Philosophers have a hard time defining what it means to know something. The classic definition is have a "justified true belief". I assume external, absolute, reality exists (because if not, we have nothing to talk about). I believe something is true (meaning it corresponds to reality) and my reasons for believing it are valid. But that doesn't necessarily work. > - Jones owns a very precise, reliable clock - Jones comes downstairs in the morning to check the time from his trusty clock - It shows the time to be 10 o'clock - Jones forms the belief “It’s 10 in the morning” [Justified: his clock has always been reliable and precise in the past] - However, last night at 10pm, the clock stopped and hadn’t moved since - By chance, it is 10 in the morning! Presumably, I know what I believe in my own mind, and Shlomo is telling me that my public statements should reflect that. And then ה׳, Who knows the Truth as we discussed above, lies directly to Avraham. So what do we do with מִדְּבַר שֶׁקֶר תִּרְחָק? Rambam says it is a limited מצווה about testimony in court: there, only say what you believe to be true. לשנות בדבר השלום doesn't apply. {:he} >היו שלשה נושין מנה באחד וכפר בהן לא יהיה אחד תובע ושנים מעידים וכשיוציאו ממנו יחלקו. ועל דברים אלו וכיוצא בהן הזהיר הכתוב ואמר מִדְּבַר שֶׁקֶר תִּרְחָק. --משנה תורה, הלכות טוען ונטען טז:י So where do we go with ספר משלי?‎ יפיח אמונה יגיד צדק is about ethics, not law. Honesty *is* the best policy. הכתב והקבלה also makes it an statement about law; don't lie in court even to support a claim you know is true. {:he} ><em>מדבר שקר תרחק</em>: שינה הכתוב לומר האזהרה בלשון זה ולא אמר לא תדבר שקר, לפי שאין עברה יותר תדירה ומצויה כמו דבר שקר, וכדאיתא בפרק חלק (סנהדרין צז,א) מריש הוה אמינא ליכא קושטא בעלמא, ופירש"י אין אדם שידבר אמת תמיד, לכן בא הכתוב בלשון זה כדי לעשות הרחקה יתרה...ורבותינו (שבועות לא,א) כללו בזה כל מיני שקר אף שיש לו ממון ברור אצל חברו, כגון היה נושה מנה וטענו מאתים לא יאמר אכפור הכל בב"ד ואודה לו במנה ביני לבינו כדי שלא אתחייב לו שבועה. --הכתב והקבלה, שמות כג:ז But others emphasize that lying, שקר, inherently hurts others. We have mental models of how the world works and we adapt our models based on what others tell us. If you lie to me, our mental models will not coincide and that will lead to conflict, with each other or with reality. {:he} ><em>מדבר שקר תרחק</em>:...וכל יראי ה' יתנו לב להתרחק שיוכל לבא לידי רעה. ואם יאמר לא חשבתי שיבא הדבר לרעה דבר המסור ללב לכך נאמר ”ויראת מאלקיך“. אבל שקר שאינו בא לידי רעה לא הזהירה תורה עליו, דדבר למד מענינו שברשע רע לבריות הכתוב מדבר, דכתיב: מִדְּבַר שֶׁקֶר תִּרְחָק; וְנָקִי וְצַדִּיק אַל תַּהֲרֹג כִּי לֹא אַצְדִּיק רָשָׁע... > ואדם העושה אלו...עבירות מבלבל שלומו ושלום שכינה ומגלגל על עצמו בלבולים קשים. --ספר יראים רלה The goal is not אמת {:la}/per se/. שקר is wrong because it decreases שלום. In the aggadah above, ה׳ threw down אמת and kept שלום, because that is the priority. Not just distanced from ה׳, but distanced from everyone, from society. Dishonesty, even if not directly harmful, weakens the bonds of society. So the contrast with מרמה בלב is וליעצי שלום שמחה. Shlomo says לשון חכמים מרפא; ‎ אמת should make things better.
