It's not the sort of thing you can undo. >A Chasidic tale vividly illustrates the danger of improper speech: A man went about the community telling malicious lies about the rabbi. Later, he realized the wrong he had done, and began to feel remorse. He went to the rabbi and begged his forgiveness, saying he would do anything he could to make amends. The rabbi told the man, "Take a feather pillow, cut it open, and scatter the feathers to the winds." The man thought this was a strange request, but it was a simple enough task, and he did it gladly. When he returned to tell the rabbi that he had done it, the rabbi said, "Now, go and gather the feathers. The רוכל teaches that, while you can't take back the words you said, you can do תשובה in the sense of becoming a better person in the future. That was the חידוש that רבי ינאי didn't know. {:he} >רבי ינאי הוה יתיב ופשיט בטרקליניה...שנתרחקו מעל גבול בעלי הלשון...א"ל לית את צריך כו', כי הוא סובר שפסוק (משלי טו:ד) מַרְפֵּא לָשׁוֹן עֵץ חַיִּים מדבר דווקא במי שכבר סיפר אבל אתה וכל דכוותך אינן צריכין שימור... > ועל זה א"ר ינאי כל ימי לא הייתי יודע היכן מקרא זה פשוט כו'. והיינו פסוק שומר פיו ולשונו כי היה סבור שסיפר אין לו תקנה וא"כ היה קשה לו מה הוסיף שלמה על דברי אביו, עד שבא רוכל זה והודיע שפסוק מִי הָאִישׁ הֶחָפֵץ חַיִּים מדבר במי שכבר סיפר... --כלי יקר, ויקרא יד:ד And then the כלי יקר (who was a pulpit rabbi, known for his fiery sermons) adds: {:he} >ויצאתי מגדרי להאריך קצת בדבר שאינו מענין פשוטו של פרשה, יען כי ראיתי דור זה פרוץ מאד מאד בחטא הלשון וצרעת נושנת היא כי...בבית שני חזרו לסורם, ועוד היום בגלות החל הזה חטא הלשון הולך וגדל עד עלות חמת ה' לאין מרפה, לכן ראיתי לדבר קצת בהתעוררות זה לאמר אולי ישמעו העורים שבמחנה העברים ויתנו אל לבם לתקן פרצה זו. וזה דרשתי בק"ק לובלין בפר' זכור שס"ב לפ"ק בהתאסף ראשי עם וחכמי כל הקהילות ונוסף עליהם דברים כהנה וכהנה. --כלי יקר, ויקרא יד:ד Shlomo's לסור ממקשי מות is David's סור מרע ועשה טוב; בקש שלום ורדפהו. That is the סם חיים. ---- Shlomo continues: {:he} >שכל טוב יתן חן; ודרך בגדים איתן׃ --משלי יג:טו Malbim defines שכל as "intuition" {:he} ><em>שכל טוב יתן חן</em>: יש שכל ושכל טוב, השכל הוא הכח שיש לאדם המשכיל לחדור בכל דבר בידיעה פתאומית ולשפוט על דברים שהם נעלמים מכח החכמה והבינה, וגם על דברים שאין לחוש מבוא בהם כמו ידיעת ה' והרוחנים וכדומה מדרושים שאחר הטבע, ושכל טוב הוא מי שמשיג ברוה"ק, שהוא למעלה מן השכל האנושי שילך לפעמים בארח עקלתון, אבל אם ילוה אליו עזר ממרומים ישכיל באמתיות וידע הכל ברוח ה' עליו, ושכל הזה בא לרוב בדרך חנינה למי שמצא חן בעיני ה' ועז"א (משלי ג:ד) וּמְצָא חֵן וְשֵׂכֶל טוֹב בְּעֵינֵי אֱלֹקִים וְאָדָם. --מלבי"ם, משלי יג:טו Moral intuition ("heart" as opposed to "mind") is an important force; purely intellectual ethics too easily end up in a "repugnant conclusion". Your mind can convince you that some immoral act is in fact the right way to act. The little internal voice of your conscience keeps your mind honest. But intuition can't be the answer; it is immediate and unthinking, and it is formed not by conscious thought but by the human instinct to belong. What we observe is by definition normal and hence moral. It is a reflection of our nature as a social primate. You can't blindly go with your gut. I would translate איתן, “strong”, as stubborn. Those who refuse to change are בגדים, betraying both ה׳ and their best interests. >Stubborn and ardent clinging to one's opinion is the best proof of stupidity. --[Michel de Montaigne](https://www.azquotes.com/author/10284-Michel_de_Montaigne) So Shlomo continues: {:he} >כל ערום יעשה בדעת; וכסיל יפרש אולת׃ --משלי יג:טז Which is similar to the previous pasuk: {:he} >אדם ערום כסה דעת; ולב כסילים יקרא אולת׃ --משלי יב:כג >Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt. --Attributed (wrongly) to [Abraham Lincoln](https://www.npr.org/2017/04/04/522581148/hemingway-didnt-say-that-and-neither-did-twain-or-kafka) But this is different. That was about speaking; this is about acting. Someone who acts deliberately, with forethought and paying attention to their conscience, is ערום. But acting rashly just lets everyone else know that you are a fool. ---- And then we have what sounds like a common proverb: {:he} >מלאך רשע יפל ברע; וציר אמונים מרפא׃ --משלי יג:יז מלאך, messenger, is a common word, but ציר, ambassador, only occurs in a few places in תנ״ך. {:he} ><b>א</b> הוי ארץ צלצל כנפים אשר מעבר לנהרי כוש׃ <b>ב</b> השלח בים צירים ובכלי גמא על פני מים לכו מלאכים קלים אל גוי ממשך ומורט אל עם נורא מן הוא והלאה גוי קו קו ומבוסה אשר בזאו נהרים ארצו׃ <b>ג</b> כל ישבי תבל ושכני ארץ כנשא נס הרים תראו וכתקע שופר תשמעו׃ --ישעיהו פרק יח {:he} ><b>ג</b> וישבי גבעון שמעו את אשר עשה יהושע ליריחו ולעי׃ <b>ד</b> ויעשו גם המה בערמה וילכו *ויצטירו*; ויקחו שקים בלים לחמוריהם ונאדות יין בלים ומבקעים ומצררים׃ <b>ה</b> ונעלות בלות ומטלאות ברגליהם ושלמות בלות עליהם; וכל לחם צידם יבש היה נקדים׃ <b>ו</b> וילכו אל יהושע אל המחנה הגלגל; ויאמרו אליו ואל איש ישראל מארץ רחוקה באנו ועתה כרתו לנו ברית׃ --יהושוע פרק ט There is a difference between a messenger and an ambassador. We have to be *honest* ambassadors. >The "chosenness" of the Jewish people is often misunderstood―it does not mean that the Jewish people have a monopoly on G-d; any human being can serve Him. The special mission of the Jew is to serve as G-d’s representatives in this world and to give Him a "good reputation." The nations of the world instinctively look to the Jew for justice, truth, and a deeper comprehension of G-d’s master plan. Naturally, they expect him to adhere to a higher moral code than the rest of mankind. > In essence, Jews are G-d’s ambassadors in this world. When a non-Jew commits a sin in public, he alone bears the consequences.
