This week's parsha starts with Korach taking: {:he} >ויקח קרח בן יצהר בן קהת בן לוי; ודתן ואבירם בני אליאב ואון בן פלת בני ראובן׃ --במדבר טז:א Everyone is bothered by this. לקח is a transitive verb; it needs an object. What did he take? The answer in this shiur was inspired by Zohar Atkins's [_Take them (with words)_](https://etzhasadeh.substack.com/p/take-them-with-words). לקח in Hebrew, like "take" in English, is polysemous. Taking things and taking people are different. {:he} ><b>יא</b> ויאמר אלהם ישראל אביהם אם כן אפוא זאת עשו קחו מזמרת הארץ בכליכם והורידו לאיש מנחה; מעט צרי ומעט דבש נכאת ולט בטנים ושקדים׃ <b>יב</b> וכסף משנה קחו בידכם; ואת הכסף המושב בפי אמתחתיכם תשיבו בידכם אולי משגה הוא׃ <b>יג</b> ואת אחיכם קחו; וקומו שובו אל האיש׃ <b>יד</b> וא־ל שד־י יתן לכם רחמים לפני האיש ושלח לכם את אחיכם אחר ואת בנימין; ואני כאשר שכלתי שכלתי׃ <b>טו</b> ויקחו האנשים את המנחה הזאת ומשנה כסף לקחו בידם ואת בנימן; ויקמו וירדו מצרים ויעמדו לפני יוסף׃ --בראשית פרק מג The Aramaic translation uses two different verbs: {:he} >*וּנְסִיבוּ* גֻבְרַיָּא יָת תִּקְרֻבְתָּא הָדָא וְעַל חַד תְּרֵין כַּסְפָּא *נְסִיבוּ* בִידֵיהוֹן *וּדְבָרוּ* יָת בִּנְיָמִן וְקָמוּ וּנְחָתוּ לְמִצְרַיִם וְקָמוּ קֳדָם יוֹסֵף. --תרגום אונקלוס, בראשית מג:טו {:he} ><em>ואת בנימין</em>: מתרגמינן וּדְבָרוּ ית בנימין, לפי שאין לקיחת הכסף ולקיחת האדם שוה בלשון ארמי; בדבר הנקח ביד מתרגמינן וּנְסִיב, ודבר הנקח בהנהגת דברים, מתרגמינן וּדְבָר. --רש״י, בראשית מג:טו When I go on a road trip I *tell* my kids to get in the car and I *pick up* the suitcases and throw them in the trunk, even though I am *taking* all of them with me. (Though animals--and sometimes kids--are ambiguous and we see both verbs used.) We see this distinction throughout the Torah: {:he} > ויקח חמאה וחלב ובן הבקר אשר עשה ויתן לפניהם; והוא עמד עליהם תחת העץ ויאכלו׃ --בראשית יח:ח {:he} >וּנְסִיב שְׁמַן וַחֲלָב וּבַר תּוֹרֵי דִּי עֲבַד וִיהַב קֳדָמֵיהוֹן וְהוּא מְשַׁמֵּשׁ עִלָּוֵיהוֹן תְּחוֹת אִילָנָא וַאֲכָלוּ. --תרגום אונקלוס, בראשית יח:ח {:he} >ויקח אברם את שרי אשתו ואת לוט בן אחיו ואת כל רכושם אשר רכשו ואת הנפש אשר עשו בחרן; ויצאו ללכת ארצה כנען ויבאו ארצה כנען׃ --בראשית יב:ה {:he} >וּדְבַר אַבְרָם יָת שָׂרַי אִתְּתֵיהּ וְיָת לוֹט בַּר אֲחוּהִי וְיָת כָּל קִנְיָנְהוֹן דִּי קְנוֹ וְיָת נַפְשָׁתָא דְּשַׁעְבִּידוּ לְאוֹרַיְתָא בְחָרָן וּנְפָקוּ לְמֵיזַל לְאַרְעָא דִכְנַעַן וַאֲתוֹ לְאַרְעָא דִכְנָעַן. --תרגום אונקלוס, בראשית יב:ה I remember talking to Leia about this distinction, and about the ethical message, that we don't treat people like things. Other human beings have agency and moral worth and we don't *use* them, we talk to them. We see this in ה׳'s commands about the כהנים and לווים. {:he} >קח את אהרן ואת בניו אתו ואת הבגדים ואת שמן המשחה; ואת  פר החטאת ואת שני האילים ואת סל המצות׃ --ויקרא ח:ב {:he} ><em>קח את אהרן</em>: קחנו בדברים ומשכהו. --רש״י, ויקרא ח:ב Onkelos makes this point by not translating קח literally: {:he} >*קָרֵב* יָת אַהֲרֹן וְיָת בְּנוֹהִי עִמֵּיהּ וְיָת לְבוּשַׁיָּא וְיָת מִשְׁחָא דִרְבוּתָא וְיָת תּוֹרָא דְחַטָּאתָא וְיָת תְּרֵין דִּכְרִין וְיָת סַלָּא דְפַטִּירַיָּא. --תרגום אונקלוס, ויקרא ח:ב {:he} >קח את הלוים מתוך בני ישראל; וטהרת אתם׃ --במדבר ח:ו {:he} >*קָרֵב* יָת לֵוָאֵי מִגּוֹ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וּתְדַּכֵּי יָתְהוֹן. --תרגום אונקלוס, במדבר ח:ו {:he} ><em>קח את הלוים</em>: קחם בדברים--אשריכם שתזכו להיות שמשים למקום. --רש״י, במדבר ח:ו We need to view others as Thou, not It, in Buber's terms. >[Martin] Buber suggests two main ways of experiencing the world: > I-It Relationship: Viewing the other as an object or a means to an end... > I-Thou Relationship: Recognizing the other as a whole and unique being, not an object... -- Google's response to "Explain Martin Buber's I and Thou concept." If it's an important lesson, why doesn't the Hebrew of the Torah reflect it? I didn't, and still don't, have an answer. But it does allow for a fine poetic ambiguity here in our parsha. When Korach takes, what kind of taking was it? Onkelos has an opinion: {:he} >*וְאִתְפְּלֵג* קֹרַח בַּר יִצְהָר בַּר קְהָת בַּר לֵוִי וְדָתָן וַאֲבִירָם בְּנֵי אֱלִיאָב וְאוֹן בַּר פֶּלֶת בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵן. --תרגום אונקלוס, במדבר טז:א He wasn't creating a relationship; he was taking in order to create division and disagreement. He was using his purported allies to break down relationships. The midrash sees it differently: {:he} ><em>ויקח</em>: אין ”ויקח“ אלא משיכת הדברים רכים ,שנמשכו כל גדולי ישראל והסנהדראות אחריו. במשה הוא אומר (במדבר א:יז): וַיִּקַּח משֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן אֵת הָאֲנָשִׁים הָאֵלֶּה. וכן (ויקרא ח:ב):קַח אֶת אַהֲרֹן וְאֶת בָּנָיו אִתּוֹ. וכן הוא אומר (הושע יד:ג): קְחוּ עִמָּכֶם דְּבָרִים. וכן (בראשית יב:טו): וַתֻּקַּח הָאִשָּׁה בֵּית פַּרְעֹה. הוי: וַיִּקַּח קֹרַח, שבדברים רכים משך לבם. --במדבר רבה יח:ב And Rashi brings both opinions: {:he} ><em>ויקח קרח</em>: לקח את עצמו לצד אחד להיות נחלק מתוך העדה לעורר על הכהנה, וזהו שתרגם אנקלוס "ואתפלג"—נחלק משאר העדה להחזיק במחלקת... > ד"א: ויקח קרח, משך ראשי סנהדראות שבהם בדברים. --רש״י, במדבר טז:א Of course, it's not a contradiction. Korach is using the tools of וּדְבָר, superficially an I-Thou relationship, for his own purposes. It looks like וּדְבָר but it's really וּנְסִיב. ---- The midrash says that Korach felt Moshe's קח את הלוים was also manipulative and self-aggrandizing. >*Projection* is the process of displacing one’s feelings onto a different person, animal, or object. The term is most commonly used to describe defensive projection—attributing one’s own unacceptable urges to another. --[_Projection_](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/projection) {:he} >כשאמר הקדוש ברוך הוא למשה (במדבר ח: ו-ז): קַח אֶת הַלְוִיִּם מִתּוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְטִהַרְתָּ אֹתָם, וְכֹה תַעֲשֶׂה לָהֶם לְטַהֲרָם וגו', וְהֶעֱבִירוּ תַעַר עַל כָּל בְּשָׂרָם, מיד עשה כן לקרח, התחיל לחזר על ישראל, לא היו מכירין אותו, אמרו לו מי עשה לך כך, אמר להם משה עשה בי, ולא עוד אלא נטלני בידי ורגלי והיו מניפין אותי ואומר לי הרי אתה טהור, והביא את אהרן אחיו וקשטו ככלה והושיבו באהל מועד, מיד התחילו שונאי משה להתגרות בו את ישראל, ואמרו משה מלך, ואהרן אחיו כהן גדול, ובניו סגני כהנה, תרומה לכהן, מעשר לכהן, עשרים וארבע מתנות לכהן, מיד (במדבר טז:ג): וַיִּקָּהֲלוּ עַל משֶׁה. --במדבר רבה יח:ד >Korach, poetically, also takes, though the text never specifies exactly what he takes. But clearly Moses’s taking of the Levites is challenged by Korach’s own taking, perhaps a taking of himself, a pure individualism. > Korach is a Levite who rejects Moses’s bid. He sees Aaron’s garments, rich, adorned, elevated, and compares them to his own stripped-down aesthetic. His envy grows. The Midrash says Korach was wealthy (Sanhedrin 110a)...Maybe Korach could live with simplicity if everyone were equally simple. But Aaron’s sartorial grandeur triggers him... > Bamidbar Rabbah (18) links Korach’s rebellion directly to God’s command to “take the Levites.” > When Moshe shaved Korach as part of the Levite purification ritual, Korach felt humiliated. He tells others that Moshe had him lifted up and waved like an offering. He then sees Aaron adorned like a bride and is overcome with resentment. “Moses is king,” they say, “Aaron is high priest, and the rest of us are left with the burdens.” > The Torah says “Vayikach Korach”—Korach took. Just as Moshe “took” the Levites with persuasion and purpose, Korach “takes” for himself, but it’s a different kind of taking: grasping, not giving...He took others down with him. --Zohar Atkins, [_Take them (with words)_](https://etzhasadeh.substack.com/p/take-them-with-words) Korach doesn't realize that קח has two meanings; he assumes that Moshe is as Machiavellian as he is. That is his mistake and his fatal flaw. >To take someone in this sacred sense is not to own them. It’s to create the conditions for responsible self-offering. The taker doesn’t dominate; he draws out. And the one taken is not diminished, but dignified, by choosing to be chosen. > This is what spiritual leadership demands.
