This shiur comes largely from Dr. Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg's <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Murmuring-Deep-Reflections-Biblical-Unconscious-ebook/dp/B002361NHS/"><cite>The Murmuring Deep</cite></a>, in her chapter on Noach, <cite>Despondent Intoxication</cite>. The story of נח starts in last week's parasha, with his birth: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כח</b> ויחי למך שתים ושמנים שנה ומאת שנה; ויולד בן׃ <b>כט</b> ויקרא את שמו נח לאמר; זה ינחמנו ממעשנו ומעצבון ידינו מן האדמה אשר אררה ה׳׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק ה</footer></blockquote> What does this mean? What is מעצבון ידינו? We would assume that עצבון is from עצב, "sad". But then what is "the sadness of our hands"? Onkelos translates it as ליאות, "exhaustion": <blockquote lang=he><p> וקרא ית שמיה נח למימר דין ינחמננא מעובדנא ומ<em>ליאות</em> ידנא מן ארעא דלטה ה׳. </p> <footer class=source>תרגום אונקלוס, בראשית ה:כט</footer></blockquote> And Artscroll as "toil": <blockquote lang=en><p>And he called his son Noah, saying, “This one will bring us rest from our work and from <em>the toil</em> of our hands, from the ground which Hashem had cursed”.</p> <footer class=source>Artscroll Chumash, <i lang=la>loc. cit.</i></footer></blockquote> It's a reference to the original curse of Adam: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יז</b> ולאדם אמר כי שמעת לקול אשתך ותאכל מן העץ אשר צויתיך לאמר לא תאכל ממנו ארורה האדמה בעבורך ב<em>עצבון</em> תאכלנה כל ימי חייך׃ <b>יח</b> וקוץ ודרדר תצמיח לך; ואכלת את עשב השדה׃ <b>יט</b> בזעת אפיך תאכל לחם עד שובך אל האדמה כי ממנה לקחת; כי עפר אתה ואל עפר תשוב׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק ג</footer></blockquote> Lamech's statement at Noach's birth was a prayer that the curse of Adam would finally end, since Adam had died: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>זה ינחמנו</em>: וכי נביא היה למך? אר״ש בן יהוצדק: מסורת היה לאדם כשנאמר לו ארורה האדמה בעבורך אמר לפניו רבש״ע עד מתי א״ל עד שיולד אדם מהול ממעי אמו. וכיון שנולד אמר זה ינחמנו.</p> <footer class=source>ילקוט שמעוני תורה פרשת בראשית רמז מב </footer></blockquote> Others have a more rational interpretation: <blockquote lang=he><p>...נח בהשתלשלות הדורות האלה הוא הראשון שנולד אחרי שמת אדם הראשון. ולכן כשנולד נח אמר למך אביו כיון שבני זה נולד ראשונה אחרי מות אדם ושובו אל האדמה, יתחייב שעמו תבא המנוחה אל הארץ ושהוא לנו משמיע שלום מבשר טוב שינחמנו השם ממעשינו ומעצבון ידינו מן האדמה אשר אררה ה׳ בחטא אדם. </p> <footer class=source>אברבנאל בראשית פרק ה </footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>שזה היה ראשון לנולדים אחר מיתת אדם ולכך קראו נח שאמר יהי רצון שיתקן זה עיותו של זה <em>ולשון תפלה הוא</em>.</p> <footer class=source>רשב״ם, בראשית ה:כט </footer></blockquote> <hr/> There's another understanding of Lamech's prayer, that it was related to the development of agriculture. Once humanity had the ability to control the produce of the field, they would no longer have to worry about קוץ ודרדר תצמיח לך: <blockquote lang=he><p> <em>זה ינחמנו ממעשינו</em>: שלא היו חורשים כי אם באצבעותיהם.</p> <footer class=source>מדרש אגדה (בובר) בראשית פרשת בראשית פרק ה סימן כט</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יח</b> ויולד לחנוך את עירד ועירד ילד את מחויאל; ומחייאל ילד את מתושאל ומתושאל ילד את למך׃ <b>יט</b> ויקח לו למך שתי נשים; שם האחת עדה ושם השנית צלה׃ <b>כ</b> ותלד עדה את יבל; הוא היה אבי ישב אהל ומקנה׃ <b>כא</b> ושם אחיו יובל; הוא היה אבי כל תפש כנור ועוגב׃ <b>כב</b> וצלה גם הוא ילדה את תובל קין לטש כל חרש נחשת וברזל; ואחות תובל קין נעמה׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק ד</footer></blockquote> Rashi cites both explanations: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>זה ינחמנו</em>:ינח ממנו את עצבון ידינו, עד שלא בא נח לא היה להם כלי מחרישה והוא הכין להם, והיתה הארץ מוציאה קוצים ודרדרים כשזורעים חטים, מקללתו של אדם הראשון, ובימי נח נחה, וזהו ינחמנו, ינח ממנו.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית ה:כט </footer></blockquote> <hr/> But עצבון is used even earlier in ספר בראשית, for the curse of Chava: <blockquote lang=he><p>אל האשה אמר הרבה ארבה <em>עצבונך</em> והרנך בעצב תלדי בנים; ואל אישך תשוקתך והוא ימשל בך׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית ג:טז</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>עצבונך</em>: זה צער גידול בנים.</p> <p><em>והרנך</em>: זה צער העבור.</p> <p><em>בעצב תלדי בנים</em>: זה צער הלידה.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם</footer></blockquote> How does עצבון refer to the "pain of raising children"? The Torah Temimah says עצב doesn't only mean "sad", it also means "formed": <blockquote lang=he><p>נראה דמפרש ”ועצבונך“ מלשון הכתוב (איוב י:ח) ידיך עצבוני ויעשוני, ובלשון חזל (שבת קמז,א) מעצבין את הקטן, דהפירוש משיירין אותו. </p> <footer class=source>תורה תמימה בראשית ג:טז הערה יח</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ו</b> כִּי תְבַקֵּשׁ לַעֲו‍ֹנִי; וּלְחַטָּאתִי תִדְרוֹשׁ׃<br/> <b>ז</b> עַל דַּעְתְּךָ כִּי לֹא אֶרְשָׁע; וְאֵין מִיָּדְךָ מַצִּיל׃<br/> <b>ח</b> יָדֶיךָ עִצְּבוּנִי וַיַּעֲשׂוּנִי; יַחַד סָבִיב וַתְּבַלְּעֵנִי׃<br/> <b>ט</b> זְכָר נָא כִּי כַחֹמֶר עֲשִׂיתָנִי; וְאֶל עָפָר תְּשִׁיבֵנִי׃</p> <footer class=source>איוב פרק י</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>...ואין מעצבין את הקטן...</p> <footer class=source>משנה שבת כב:ו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>מעצבין</em>: הוא השבת חליות השדרה ועריכתן, וזהו כמו בונה.</p> <footer class=source>פירוש הרמב״ם, שם</footer></blockquote> And idols are called עצבים, "formed things": <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ד</b> <em>עצביהם</em> כסף וזהב; מעשה ידי אדם׃<br/> <b>ה</b> פה להם ולא ידברו; עינים להם ולא יראו׃<br/> <b>ו</b> אזנים להם ולא ישמעו; אף להם ולא יריחון׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק קטו</footer></blockquote> <hr/> Dr. Zornberg says that the two meanings of עצב are really the same. She notes that both curses of עצבון, of צער גידול בנים and of קוץ ודרדר תצמיח לך, are curses that despite all their toil, the results are completely out of their hands: <blockquote lang=en><p>Now Eve is initiated into a world in which this creative will meets inevitable frustration: parents raise children a projections of their own desires, only to discover that children develop desires of their own. Here, the planting may come to bear very little resemblance to the yield.</p> <p>In both love and work, then, <i lang=he>itzavon</i> is the strange fruit of intentionality, of "sowing seed" toward an imagined future...For Adam, a similar discontinuity will haunt his relations with the earth. The gap, the arbitrary response of the earth to his desire, expresses a radical irrationality in human experience. Creative aspiration acquires an ironic edge.</p> <footer class=source>Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg, <cite>The Murmuring Deep</cite>, pp. 40-41</footer></blockquote> עצבון is the עצב, the misery, of toil: when all your effort, all your hard work, comes to nothing. Lamech's prayer was that Noach would be the start of a new relationship with the earth, predictable and consistent, a life without עצבון. He unfortunately missed the point of the curse. First of all, he focused only on Adam's curse, not Chava's (typical man!). And even then, he thought the relief would either be through technology: כל חרש נחשת וברזל, or through time: if the curse was on Adam, then once Adam is gone, things will get better. We, humanity, do not need to improve our behavior. The irony is that Noach does in fact bring נחמה. Just not the kind that Lamech wanted: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ה</b> וירא ה׳ כי רבה רעת האדם בארץ וכל יצר מחשבת לבו רק רע כל היום׃ <b>ו</b> <em>וינחם ה׳</em> כי עשה את האדם בארץ; ויתעצב אל לבו׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק ו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ת״ח: נח כד אתייליד קרון ליה על שמא דנחמה ולהוי שמא גרים; אבל קודשא בריך הוא לאו הכי.</p> <footer class=source>זוהר כרך א (בראשית) פרשת בראשית [דף נח עמוד ב] </footer></blockquote> And we realize that the עצבון that was the curse of Adam and Chava was a מידה כנגד מידה: the original עצבון was G-d's. He created humanity, only to have them fail to live up to their potential. And now, ה׳ is ויתעצב again: all that work in creating humanity and allowing a second chance after the sin of עץ הדעת, all fails. צער גידול בנים applies to ה׳ as well. <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ויתעצב אל לבו</em>: נתאבל על אבדן מעשה ידיו, כמו (ש״ב יט:ג) נעצב המלך על בנו.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית ו:ו</footer></blockquote> <hr/> And in our parasha, Noach is the איש צדיק but he fails as well. He saves himself and his family but doesn't even try to redeem the rest of the world. But after the flood, ה׳ renegotiates the terms of His relationship with humanity to end the עצבון. There's a subtle difference in the two lists of "begats", in פרשת בראשית and פרשת נח: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ו</b> ויחי שת חמש שנים ומאת שנה; ויולד את אנוש׃ <b>ז</b> ויחי שת אחרי הולידו את אנוש שבע שנים ושמנה מאות שנה; ויולד בנים ובנות׃ <b>ח</b> ויהיו כל ימי שת שתים עשרה שנה ותשע מאות שנה; וימת׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק ה</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>י</b> אלה תולדת שם שם בן מאת שנה ויולד את ארפכשד; שנתים אחר המבול׃ <b>יא</b> ויחי שם אחרי הולידו את ארפכשד חמש מאות שנה; ויולד בנים ובנות׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק יא</footer></blockquote> Every life in the first list, before the flood, ends with וימת, "and he died". <blockquote lang=he><p>נראה לי שישנה כוונה מיוחדת בפסוקים אלו, והיינו לאחר שמנה בן כמה הוליד את בנו הממשיך את הדור הבא, ושהוליד בנים ובנות, אחר כך הוסיף פסוק שלישי—דהיינו כל ימי חייו כמה הם…דאף על פי כן מתו סוף סוף מפני עונש מיתה של עץ הדעת. </p> <footer class=source>אמת ליעקב, בראשית ה:ה</footer></blockquote> In the antediluvian world, after the curse of Adam, life--no matter how long--was dominated by the inevitability of death: <blockquote lang=he><p>והנה ששון ושמחה הרג בקר ושחט צאן אכל בשר ושתות יין; אכול ושתו כי מחר נמות׃</p> <footer class=source>ישעיהו כב:יג</footer></blockquote> If existence is random, defined by עצבון, then the only thing to look forward to is וימת. Even Noach was subject to the same existential crisis: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כח</b> ויחי נח אחר המבול שלש מאות שנה וחמשים שנה׃ <b>כט</b> ויהיו כל ימי נח תשע מאות שנה וחמשים שנה; וימת׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק ט</footer></blockquote> But the later generations did not end their lives with וימת. What changed? <hr/> What changed is that ה׳ gave them purpose, something to live up to: <blockquote lang=he><p>הוא היה אומר, חביב אדם שנברא בצלם; חיבה יתרה נודעת לו שנברא בצלם, שנאמר (בראשית ט:ו) כי בצלם אלקים עשה את האדם .</p> <footer class=source>ממשנה אבות ג,יז</footer></blockquote> ה׳ created אדם in the image of G-d, but didn't tell them until after the flood: <blockquote lang=he><p>יברא אלקים את האדם בצלמו בצלם אלקים ברא אתו; זכר ונקבה ברא אתם׃ <b>כח</b> ויברך אתם אלקים ויאמר להם אלקים פרו ורבו ומלאו את הארץ וכבשה; ורדו בדגת הים ובעוף השמים ובכל חיה הרמשת על הארץ׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויברך אלקים את נח ואת בניו; ויאמר להם פרו ורבו ומלאו את הארץ׃ ... <b>ו</b> שפך דם האדם באדם דמו ישפך; כי בצלם אלקים עשה את האדם׃ <b>ז</b> ואתם פרו ורבו; שרצו בארץ ורבו בה׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק ט</footer></blockquote> And it is that חיבה יתרה that made the difference. This is the relationship that ה׳ continues to have with us. Life is a multiple-choice test, but ה׳ has given us the answer sheet in advance: <blockquote lang=he><p>העדתי בכם היום את השמים ואת הארץ החיים והמות נתתי לפניך הברכה והקללה; ובחרת בחיים למען תחיה אתה וזרעך׃ </p> <footer class=source>דברים ל:יט</footer></blockquote> This applies to the עצבון of <em>our</em> צער גידול בנים as well. We think our kids should know the right thing to do; we shouldn't have to say it in so many words. But we have to. We can't assume our kids know what we expect; saying it explicitly makes it possible for them to have something to strive for, and knowing that we are watching is an expression of חיבה יתרה.
