I want to start with the first pasuk of our parasha: <blockquote lang=he><p>וידבר משה אל ראשי המטות לבני ישראל לאמר; זה הדבר אשר צוה ה׳׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר ל:ב</footer></blockquote> What does ראשי המטות mean? A מטה is a staff, so ראשי המטות literally means (as <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/1892984032">Rabbi Matis Weinberg points out</a>) "chiefs of staff", which Rabbi Weinberg calls "weirdly literal". This will turn out to be significant later. Throughout ספר במדבר, the tribes are called מטות, rather than the word we usually use, שבטים. What is the difference between a שבט and a מטה? Both are literally sticks (a שבט is a rod or scepter), and are metonyms for leadership and thus for the tribe as a whole. The commentators differ on the significance of the two words. <blockquote lang=he><p> לכן כה אמר א־דני ה׳ צ־באות אל תירא עמי ישב ציון מאשור; בשבט יככה ומטהו ישא עליך בדרך מצרים׃</p> <footer class=source>ישעיהו י:כד</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>”שבט, מטה“. המטה עב, והשבט רך, הכאת השבט אינו מסוכן.</p> <footer class=source>מלבי״ם, שם</footer></blockquote> The Lubavitch Rebbe expanded this idea: <blockquote lang=he><p> מבואר בכ״מ (בענין שני השמות שבהם נקראו ישראל—”שבטים“ ו”מטות“)—ההבדל בין ”שבט“ ו”מטה“ בפשטות, ש”שבט“ הוא ענף רך שיש בו עדיין לחלוחית מיניקת האילן (ועאכו״כ כשעדיין מחובר לאילן), משא״כ ”מטה“ הוא ש(לאחר שנכרת מן האילן) כבר נתיבשה לחות יניקתו—אבל דוקא משו״ז הרי השבט נעשה קשה וחזק—מטה.</p> <p> ובדרגות העבודה של האדם: ”שבט“ מרמז על בני ישראל כשהם במצב של ”חיבור למקורם“, שבכללות הוא בזמן שביהמ״ק עומד על מכונו ובנ״י יושבים על אדמתם...אז נרגש בישראל החיבור למקורם; משא״כ ”מטה“ מורה על מצבם של בנ״י בגלות, שלא ניכר אז בגלוי חיבורם למקורם...</p> <footer class=source>הרב מנחם מנדל שניאורסון, <a href="http://www.hebrewbooks.org/pagefeed/hebrewbooks_org_15847_279.pdf">לקוטי שיחות, כרך לג, מטות</a></footer></blockquote> But it's hard to reconcile with the way the words are used in תנ״ך: <blockquote lang=he><p>וכי יכה איש את עבדו או את אמתו בשבט ומת תחת ידו נקם ינקם׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות כא:כ</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ח</b> יהודה אתה יודוך אחיך ידך בערף איביך; ישתחוו לך בני אביך׃ ... <b>י</b> לא יסור שבט מיהודה ומחקק מבין רגליו עד כי יבא שילה ולו יקהת עמים׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק מט</footer></blockquote> Rav Hirsch (as cited in <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/1583304312">Clark's Etymological Dictionary of Biblical Hebrew</a>) connects שבט to שפט; it is a symbol of judgment and power. And מטה is derived from מוט, tottering, as in (תהילים קכא:ג)‎ אַל יִתֵּן לַמּוֹט רַגְלֶךָ; אַל יָנוּם שֹׁמְרֶךָ׃. It's the exact opposite interpretation from the Lubavitch Rebbe's. <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/1892984032">Rabbi Matis Wienberg</a> explains the difference in the symbolism as relating to the literal meanings of the words, but he starts by pointing out the problem with this week's parasha. After spending the entire book of Bamidbar creating the united camp of Israel from the disparate tribes, then telling the stories of how the divisions between them led to the failures of the 40 years in the desert, the Torah seems to go out of its wy to encourage tribal divisions. The command about נדרים we have seen was specifically given to ראשי המטות. The nation would enter the land separated by tribes: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>טז</b> וידבר ה׳ אל משה לאמר׃ <b>יז</b> אלה שמות האנשים אשר ינחלו לכם את הארץ; אלעזר הכהן ויהושע בן נון׃ <b>יח</b> ונשיא אחד נשיא אחד ממטה תקחו לנחל את הארץ׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר פרק לד</footer></blockquote> The tribes were effectively commanded to not intermarry, to keep the tribes separate: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ז</b> ולא תסב נחלה לבני ישראל ממטה אל מטה; כי איש בנחלת מטה אבתיו ידבקו בני ישראל׃ <b>ח</b> וכל בת ירשת נחלה ממטות בני ישראל לאחד ממשפחת מטה אביה תהיה לאשה; למען יירשו בני ישראל איש נחלת אבתיו׃ <b>ט</b> ולא תסב נחלה ממטה למטה אחר; כי איש בנחלתו ידבקו מטות בני ישראל׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר פרק לו</footer></blockquote> And this was seen as a tragedy, to the extent that when this rule was rescinded, it was a day of great celebration: <blockquote lang=he><p>א״ר שמעון ב״ג לא היו ימים טובים לישראל כחמשה עשר באב וכיוה״כ...ט״ו באב מאי היא אמר רב יהודה אמר שמואל יום שהותרו שבטים לבוא זה בזה מאי דרוש (במדבר לו) זה הדבר אשר צוה ה׳ לבנות צלפחד וגו׳ דבר זה לא יהא נוהג אלא בדור זה...</p> <footer class=source>תענית ל,ב</footer></blockquote> And even the army in this parasha is divided by tribes: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ג</b> וידבר משה אל העם לאמר החלצו מאתכם אנשים לצבא; ויהיו על מדין לתת נקמת ה׳ במדין׃ <b>ד</b> אלף למטה אלף למטה לכל מטות ישראל תשלחו לצבא׃ <b>ה</b> וימסרו מאלפי ישראל אלף למטה שנים עשר אלף חלוצי צבא׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר פרק לא</footer></blockquote> And in the end, some of the tribes seem to split off: <blockquote lang=he><p> <b>ב</b> ויבאו בני גד ובני ראובן; ויאמרו אל משה ואל אלעזר הכהן ואל נשיאי העדה לאמר׃ </p> <p><b>ה</b> ויאמרו אם מצאנו חן בעיניך יתן את הארץ הזאת לעבדיך לאחזה; אל תעברנו את הירדן׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר פרק לב</footer></blockquote> And it almost leads to civil war: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ט</b> וישבו וילכו בני ראובן ובני גד וחצי שבט המנשה מאת בני ישראל משלה אשר בארץ כנען ללכת אל ארץ הגלעד אל ארץ אחזתם אשר נאחזו בה על פי ה׳ ביד משה׃ <b>י</b> ויבאו אל גלילות הירדן אשר בארץ כנען; ויבנו בני ראובן ובני גד וחצי שבט המנשה שם מזבח על הירדן מזבח גדול למראה׃ <b>יא</b> וישמעו בני ישראל לאמר; הנה בנו בני ראובן ובני גד וחצי שבט המנשה את המזבח אל מול ארץ כנען אל גלילות הירדן אל עבר בני ישראל׃ <b>יב</b> וישמעו בני ישראל; ויקהלו כל עדת בני ישראל שלה לעלות עליהם לצבא׃ </p> <footer class=source>יהושוע פרק כב</footer></blockquote> Rabbi Weinberg focuses on the meaning of שבט and מטה. A שבט as we said, is an instrument of judgment, a club for punishment. A מטה is a staff, a tool for support: <blockquote lang=en><p>The guard still hesitated. "Your staff," he said to Gandalf. "Forgive me, but that too must be left at the doors."</p> <p>"Foolishness!" said Gandalf. "Prudence is one thing, but discourtesy is another. I am old. If I may not lean on my stick as I go, then I will sit out here, until it pleases Théoden to hobble out himself to speak with me."</p> <footer class=source>J. R. R. Tolkein, <cite>The Lord of the Rings</cite>, <cite>The Two Towers</cite>, chapter VI</footer></blockquote> (Of course, in <cite>The Lord of the Rings</cite>, Gandalf's staff turns out to be more of an offensive club) ספר במדבר allows, even encourages, a tribal identity, but only as long as it exists to support one another, not to attack. Rabbi Weinberg goes further, noting the difference in the English meanings of the words and thinking that it applies to the Hebrew symbolism as well: <blockquote lang=en><p>There is an important distinction in the connotations of the words. A <i lang=he>shevet</i>, or club, is essentially a weapon, a cudgel. When used in the sense of a society (even in the commercial sense—"Frequent Flyers Club"), it has the connotation of exclusivity, of cliquish restriction, and is wielded to to maintain the superiority of the clubbable (yes, that is a real word). But <i lang=he>mateh</i>, or staff, is essentially a support—"the staff of life". When used in the sense of a group, it has the connotation of sustenance and mutual aid.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/1892984032">Rabbi Matis Weinberg, <cite>Frameworks: Au Désert/Numbers</cite></a>, p. 276</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>I don’t want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://quoteinvestigator.com/2011/04/18/groucho-resigns/">Groucho Marx</a></footer></blockquote> Rav Hirsch adds that a מטה also implies a "branch", something still connected to the root: <blockquote lang=he><p>שבטים אלו קרויים ”מטות“ (=ענפים....), על שם הגזע האחד המשותף לכולם...</p> <footer class=source>רשר״ה, במדבר א:א, cited by <a href="ravfried.freevar.com/Bamidbar/09-MATOS-MASEI5766.doc">Rabbi Moshe Fried</a>; it's not in the English translation by Isaac Levy</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>We have already explained, on Ch. 1, how מטה looks on the tribe as "a branch" of the great nation as a whole, within which the one common national mission is to be brought to fruition through its own special characteristics</p> <footer class=source>Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsh, Numbers 30:1</footer></blockquote> So the split into מטות, while dangerous, is still critically necessary for forming a nation out of בני ישראל: <blockquote lang=en><p>It seems to me that the Torah here is emphasizing the important, but often overlooked, difference between unity and conformity. Each of the tribes, and certainly each of the leaders of those tribes, bring something different to the table of society. The Talmud teaches us that just as the physical features of human beings differ one from another so too do their opinions, thought processes and worldviews differ.</p> <footer class=source>Rabbi Berel Wein, <a href="http://www.rabbiwein.com/blog/post-1906.html">Matot 2016</a></footer></blockquote> Our differences make our unity possible.
