So I've started to skip that paragraph. This is not a new problem; there are a number of possible approaches. One is the usual way we deal with evidence that contradicts our beliefs: just close our eyes and ignore it. <blockquote lang=en><p>Do I contradict myself?<br/> Very well then I contradict myself,<br/> (I am large, I contain multitudes.)</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.english.illinois.edu/maps/poets/s_z/whitman/song.htm">Walt Whitman, <cite>Song of Myself</cite></a></footer></blockquote> ##Rambam is Wrong We could say that the Rambam is wrong about the halachah; the 13 Principles of Faith are not the last word in our understanding of the philosophical underpinings of Torah. See <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Limits-Orthodox-Theology-Reappraised-Civilization/dp/1906764239">Marc Shapiro's <cite>The Limits of Orthodox Theology</cite></a>. Maybe there is nothing wrong with asking an angel for a blessing. ##Jacob is Wrong We could argue that Jacob made a mistake here; the avot were human, after all. I would develop that in light of the midrash cited by Ramban: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>וישלח יעקב</em>, ר״ה פתח (משלי כו) ”מחזיק באזני כלב עובר מתעבר על ריב לא לו“...אמר לו הקדוש ברוך הוא לדרכו היה מהלך ואתה משלח אצלו ואומר לו כה אמר עבדך יעקב.</p> <footer class=source>בראשית רבה (וילנא) פרשת וישלח פרשה עה סימן ג </footer></blockquote> Jacob is being too subservient to Esav, and his needing a blessing from שרו של עשו is a part of that. ##It Was All a Dream The Rambam himself may have an answer from his understanding of the whole event. He understands "angels" as "incorporeal intelligences": <blockquote lang=en><p>The angels are likewise incorporeal: they are intelligences without matter, but they are nevertheless created beings, and God created them...</p> <footer class=source>Guide for the Perplexed, 1:49, Friedlander translation</footer></blockquote> It used to be impossible to understand what "incorporeal intelligences" are, but we are fortunate enough to deal with them on a daily basis ("Siri, what’s the weather today?", "To speak to customer service, say 'representative'"), so it's not such an alien idea. Since they are incorporeal, they cannot be seen. So any physical description must be a prophetic vision: <blockquote lang=en><p>The same [as Abraham's encounter with the three "men"], I hold, is the case when it is said in reference to Jacob, "And a man wrestled with him" (Gen. xxxii. 25); this took place in a prophetic vision, since it is expressly stated in the end (ver. 31) that it was an angel. ...[T]he account of the vision of Jacob begins, "And the angels of God met him" (Gen. xxxii. 2); then follows a detailed description how it came to pass that they met him; namely, Jacob sent messengers, and after having prepared and done certain things, "he was left alone," etc., "and a man wrestled with him" (ibid. ver. 24). By this term "man" [one of] the angels of God is meant, mentioned in the phrase, "And angels of God met him"; the wrestling and speaking was entirely a prophetic vision.</p> <footer class=source>Guide for the Perplexed, 2:42, Friedlander translation</footer></blockquote> The Ramban objects strenuously: <blockquote lang=he><p>ובספר מורה הנבוכים (ב מב) נאמר כי הפרשה כלל ופרט...וכן אמר (שם) בענין ”ויאבק איש עמו“ (להלן לב כה) שהכל מראה הנבואה. ולא ידעתי למה היה צולע על ירכו בהקיץ, ולמה אמר (להלן לב לא) כי ראיתי אלקים פנים אל פנים ותנצל נפשי, כי הנביאים לא יפחדו שימותו מפני מראות הנבואה. וכבר ראה מראה גדולה ונכבדת מזאת, כי גם את השם הנכבד ראה פעמים רבות במראה הנבואה (עיין להלן כח יג, לא ג).</p> ... <p>ובאמת כי כל מקום שהוזכר בכתוב ראיית מלאך או דבור מלאך הוא במראה או בחלום, כי ההרגשים לא ישיגו המלאכים. </p> ... <p>אבל במקום אשר יזכיר המלאכים בשם ”אנשים“ כענין הפרשה הזאת ופרשת לוט, וכן ויאבק איש עמו (להלן לב כה), וכן וימצאהו איש (שם לז טו), על דעת רבותינו (תנחומא וישב ב) הוא כבוד נברא במלאכים, יקרא אצל היודעים ”מלבוש“, יושג לעיני בשר בזכי הנפשות כחסידים ובני הנביאים. ולא אוכל לפרש. </p> <footer class=source>רמב״ן, בראשית יח:א </footer></blockquote> The Rambam would answer that prophetic visions can have physical impacts; Jacob's limp does not need to mean an actual wrestling match. <blockquote lang=en><p>This debate reflects a fairly famous discussion and I merely wish to correct one error. Some formulate the debate as follows: “Ramban thinks these encounters really happened; Rambam contends they did not.” Such a formulation fails to accurately portray Rambam’s position. For Rambam, G-d communicated messages crucial for Jewish history to our patriarchs through the avenue of prophetic visions which include conversations with angels. Such events are not fantasy or make–believe; they are real and influential. They may not have happened in terms of physical encounters but they did, in a profound sense, take place.</p> <p>Though I prefer citations from the great cannon of Western literature, I will make an exception in the case of the most popular author in recent memory. J. K. Rowlings [sic] understood this point quite well. When Harry Potter asks Dumbledore if their conversation is real or in his head, Dumbledore responds: “Of course it is happening in your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real.”</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://blog.webyeshiva.org/ramban-on-the-torah-angels-visions-and-reality/">Rabbi Avi Weinstein, <cite>Ramban on the Torah: Angels, Visions and Reality</cite></a></footer></blockquote> This doesn't quite answer the question, since presumably Jacob still has free will in his actions during the prophecy, so why does he ask for a blessing? ##Command Performance Another approach is that we don't ask angels for blessings, we <em>demand</em> them. We can ask human beings for a bracha because humans have agency. The concept of תפילה, asking ה׳ for things, is theologically difficult, and we've dealt with that <a href="/%D7%A4%D7%A8%D7%A9%D7%AA+%D7%A2%D7%A7%D7%91+%D7%AA%D7%A9%D7%A2%D7%B4%D7%94">before</a>. But once we allow that, a person can pray for themself as well as for others, and we can ask others to pray on our behalf. Our receipt of G-d's providence is a reward for <em>them</em>. <blockquote lang=he><p>אמר רבי אלעזר אמר ר׳ חנינא לעולם אל תהי ברכת הדיוט קלה בעיניך.</p> <footer class=source>מגילה טו,א</footer></blockquote> But if angels do not have agency, how can we ask them to "pray" on our behalf? We can give orders to beings without free will; I can tell my dog, "sit!" and Alexa,"Tell me a joke!". ברכוני לשלום is no different; if we accept that angels can listen, we can manipulate them by telling them what to do. The problem is that this, "manipulating incorporeal, spiritual, intelligences" is pretty much the definition of כישוף, sorcery. See דרשות הר״ן יב and <a href="/Grade+A+Medium/">our discussion of the witch of En-Dor</a>. That's a capital crime, so I don't like that answer. <hr/> Rabbi Shulman cited his brother that this case, Jacob and his איש, is different. He wasn't asking an angel for a blessing in the sense of being an intermediary to invoke G-d's providence; he was asking for information about the past: <blockquote lang=he><p>רבי חמא בר חנינא אמר שרו של עשו היה, הוא דהוה אמר ליה כי על כן ראיתי פניך כראות פני אלקים.</p> <footer class=source>בראשית רבה עז:ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ברכתני</em>: הודה לי על הברכות שברכני אבי, שעשו מערער עליהם.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית לב:כז </footer></blockquote> Note that ברכתני is in the past tense, "I will not not let you go until you have blessed me", not "until you bless me". It's a hint to the past. I like this answer but I want to go deeper. This איש, which the text identifies as כראת פני אלקים, is clearly meant to be an angel, and it makes sense to see it in the context of the story as שרו של עשו. But midrashically, it is also identified as the יצר הרע: <blockquote lang=he><p>הוא שטן הוא יצר הרע הוא מלאך המות.</p> <footer class=source>בבא בתרא טז,א</footer></blockquote> (The idea that the יצר הרע, the psychological drive for the needs of the self--the id, in Freud's terms--is the "guardian angel" of Edom is a fascinating idea that needs more development). <blockquote lang=he><p>והראה כאן ליעקב שקודם שילחם עם עשו עליו להלחם עם היצר הרע שלו, וגם ביצר הרע הכולל של האומה, שהוא שרו של עשו.</p> <footer class=source>מלבי״ם, בראשית לב:כה</footer></blockquote> And this struggle was seen as a struggle with <em>himself</em>. <blockquote lang=he><p>אמר לו: איני משלחך עד שתאמר לי מה שמך. וקרא [המאלך] את שמו [של יעקב] ישראל, כשמו שנקרא שמו [של המלאך] ישראל </p> <footer class=source>פרקי דרבי אליעזר פרק לו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>רבי שמואל בר נחמני אמר כעובד כוכבים נדמה לו...רב שמואל בר אחא קמיה דרב פפא משמיה דרבא בר עולא אמר כת״ח נדמה לו.</p> <footer class=source>חולין צא,א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>שהיצר הרע הוא בב' אופנים, כגוי שמראה לו שאיסור הוא, בכל זאת מפתהו לעשות האיסור, וכגוי שאין מעצור לפניו, והשני כתלמיד חכם, שמטעהו שזאת מצוה</p> <footer class=source>שם משמואל, דברים ראה תע״ר</footer></blockquote> And the Rambam himself identifies the יצר הרע as an "angel": <blockquote lang=en><p>[I]t is to the good and the evil inclinations that they refer in their well-known words, “Every person is accompanied by two angels, one being on his right side, one on his left.” In the Babylonian Gemara (Shabbath 119b), they say distinctly of the two angels that one is good and one bad.</p> <footer class=source>Guide for the Perplexed, 3:22, Friedlander translation</footer></blockquote> And so when he "asks for a blessing", he's really talking to himself. There's no prohibition of praying to angels here. This wrestling match is with his "evil twin" in multiple senses of the word. He has to overcome it before he faces the real Esav, and when he wins, he asks about the blessings that he had "stolen" twenty years before. The response is that his name is not יעקב but ישראל. How do we put that together? <hr/> So the struggle with the איש is a struggle with the יצר הרע (in English we say "struggle with ones conscience" but that's backwards: our conscience, our יצר טוב, should be on "our" side!). What is he struggling about? The following is my idea: What is Jacob doing at the Yabok River? When we look at the map, it's clear that if Jacob wants to return to his father in Chevron, he should take the western route, not the eastern one. I think Jacob is intentionally taking the road to Seir, to confront Esav. He needs to deal with the brachot that he stole 20 years before. Jacob is supposed to be the paragon of אמת, but so far he's been the trickster archtype. He claims (רש״י, בראשית לב:ה)‎ עם לבן הרשע גרתי ותרי״ג מצות שמרתי ולא למדתי ממעשיו הרעים but he has to demonstrate that. Rashi sees a reflection of the stolen ברכות in all of Jacob's interaction with Esav: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויהי לי שור וחמור צאן ועבד ושפחה; ואשלחה להגיד לאדני למצא חן בעיניך׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית לב: ו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ויהי לי שור וחמור</em>: אבא אמר לי (כז כח) מטל השמים ומשמני הארץ, זו אינה לא מן השמים ולא מן הארץ.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם</footer></blockquote> His message to Esav is that he (Jacob) never got the benefit of the brachot he stole; <em>Esav</em> was the one who was truly blessed. <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ט</b> ויאמר עשו יש לי רב; אחי יהי לך אשר לך׃ <b>י</b> ויאמר יעקב אל נא אם נא מצאתי חן בעיניך ולקחת מנחתי מידי; כי על כן ראיתי פניך כראת פני אלהים ותרצני׃ <b>יא</b> קח נא את ברכתי אשר הבאת לך כי חנני אלקים וכי יש לי כל; ויפצר בו ויקח׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק לג</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p> <em>יהי לך אשר לך</em>: כאן הודה לו על הברכות.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית לג:ט</footer></blockquote> But the fact that Esav says יהי לך אשר לך about the brachot implies that the brachot are the subtext behind what Jacob was offering him. This is also implied when Jacob calls his gift ברכתי, a rare term in תנ״ך for a gift. So the irony is that the only way Jacob can keep the brachot is to give them away. He has to go from being יעקב, the trickster, to ישראל/ישורון, the straightforward one. And that's why the יצר הרע is wrestling with him: it's to stop him from crossing the Yabok. The יצר הרע says, "don't go south, to Esav. Just head west, avoid the trouble. The brachot are yours (ours) by right; there's no reason to negotiate with Esav over them." And when he overcomes that, he earns the right to lose the name יעקב, and then go on to Chevron to take his place as one of the Avot.
