In this week's parsha, Avraham again presents Sarah as his sister. Avimelech, the king of the Philistines, asks him why. {:he} >ויאמר אברהם כי אמרתי רק אין יראת אלקים במקום הזה; והרגוני על דבר אשתי׃ --בראשית כ:יא What is this יראת אלקים that Avraham felt *didn't* exist? It is a term that has a specific meaning in the Torah: {:he} ><b>יז</b> ויאסף אתם אל משמר שלשת ימים׃ <b>יח</b> ויאמר אלהם יוסף ביום השלישי זאת עשו וחיו; *את האלקים אני ירא*׃ --בראשית פרק מב {:he} ><b>טז</b> ויאמר בילדכן את העבריות וראיתן על האבנים; אם בן הוא והמתן אתו ואם בת הוא וחיה׃ <b>יז</b> *ותיראן המילדת את האלקים* ולא עשו כאשר דבר אליהן מלך מצרים; ותחיין את הילדים׃ --שמות פרק א {:he} >ואתה תחזה מכל העם אנשי חיל *יראי אלקים* אנשי אמת שנאי בצע; ושמת עלהם שרי אלפים שרי מאות שרי חמשים ושרי עשרת׃ --שמות יח:כא {:he} ><b>יז</b> זכור את אשר עשה לך עמלק בדרך בצאתכם ממצרים׃ <b>יח</b> אשר קרך בדרך ויזנב בך כל הנחשלים אחריך ואתה עיף ויגע; *ולא ירא אלקים*׃ --דברים פרק כה In most of these cases, יראת אלקים is something that is expected even of non-Jews, and it is not a statement about religious sensibility, but about acting with justice and caring about the other. It goes with what we talked about [last week](prev); Avraham's theology of G-d as אֵ־ל עֶלְיוֹן גּוֹמֵל חֲסָדִים טוֹבִים וְקוֹנֵה הַכֹּל: G-d is Good so we should be good. And that helps explain a comment of Rashi on the first pasuk of the parsha: {:he} > וירא אליו ה׳ באלני ממרא; והוא ישב פתח האהל כחם היום׃ --בראשית יח:א Rashi is bothered: why tell us Avraham's location? He says it's connected to the end of last week's parsha, when Avraham gets the מצווה of ברית מילה. {:he} ><em>באלוני ממרא</em>: הוא שנתן לו עצה על המילה, לפיכך נגלה עליו בחלקו. --רש״י, בראשית יח:א What kind of advice would Mamre, a Canaanite, have to offer Avraham? This argument posits that infants, lacking capacity for consent, possess a presumptive right to an intact body, with any elective modification deferred until maturity when personal agency can be exercised. --Grokipedia, [_Circumcision controversies_](https://grokipedia.com/page/Circumcision_controversies) ה׳ had given him a command that violated his sense of גמילות חסדים. He would obey--one does not ignore a command from the Almighty--but he was concerned that it would destroy his life's work, all that evangelism about "ethical monotheism" would be undone. Mamre encouraged him to do the מילה; creating a "covenantal community", to use Rav Soloveitchik's term, *is* an act of גמילות חסדים. ---- But that only highlights the *real* problem in the parsha: the immorality of the עקידה. {:he} ><b>יא</b> ויקרא אליו מלאך ה׳ מן השמים ויאמר אברהם אברהם; ויאמר הנני׃ <b>יב</b> ויאמר אל תשלח ידך אל הנער ואל תעש לו מאומה; כי עתה ידעתי כי *ירא אלקים* אתה ולא חשכת את בנך את יחידך ממני׃ --בראשית פרק כב As Rabbi Leibtag <a href="http://tanach.org/breishit/vayera2.txt">points out</a>, the concept of יראת אלקים here seems incongruous. We've been translating it as a sort of natural morality, and, as Alex Ozar <a href="http://www.torahmusings.com/2013/06/rabbi-david-hartmans-theological-legacy/">puts it</a>, “If there is anything man knows, it is that it is rather unseemly to murder one’s son in cold blood”. How can this be called יראת אלקים? How can ה׳ say that "I see that you are ירא אלקים *and* you are willing to give up your son"?
