In this week's parasha, Yaakov is on the run from his brother. He stops for the night in Luz: {:he} ><b>י</b> ויצא יעקב מבאר שבע; וילך חרנה׃ <b>יא</b> וַיִּפְגַּע בַּמָּקוֹם וילן שם כי בא השמש ויקח מאבני המקום וישם מראשתיו; וישכב במקום ההוא׃ --בראשית פרק כח The מפרשי פשט are very bothered by the פַּתַח in בַּמָּקוֹם. It is a definite article, "in *the* place". Why call it *the* place? Rashbam says it wasn't a specific place. Don't worry about it. {:he} ><em>ויפגע במקום</em>: אירע לו דרכו במקום אחד חוץ מעיר לוז. --רשב״ם, בראשית כח:יא But that's not very satisfying. Sforno says it was the designated place for travelers ("*the* rest area by the Luz exit"): {:he} ><em>ויפגע במקום</em>: קרה לו שהגיע אל מקום שלא כיון אליו. וענין הַמָּקוֹם הוא מקום ללון לאורחים, שהיה מתוקן אז בכל עיר ועיר ברחוב העיר על הרוב, ועל כל זה אמרו המלאכים ללוט כי ברחוב נלין וכן בענין פלגש בגבעה רק ברחוב אל תלן. --ספורנו, בראשית כח:יא Ibn Ezra, however, has a deeper understanding: {:he} >וטעם פתחות בי״ת בַּמָּקוֹם. דברי משה והטעם במקום הידוע היום...והוא היה בבית אל. --אבן עזרא, בראשית כח:יא *The* place means the designated place, known to בני ישראל as they left Egypt, for which there was a tradition from the time of Yaakov: {:he} ><b>יט</b> ויקרא את שם המקום ההוא בית אל; ואולם לוז שם העיר לראשנה׃ <b>כ</b> וידר יעקב נדר לאמר; אם יהיה אלקים עמדי ושמרני בדרך הזה אשר אנכי הולך ונתן לי לחם לאכל ובגד ללבש׃ <b>כא</b> ושבתי בשלום אל בית אבי; והיה ה׳ לי לאלקים׃ <b>כב</b> והאבן הזאת אשר שמתי מצבה יהיה בית אלקים; וכל אשר תתן לי עשר אעשרנו לך׃ --בראשית פרק כח It had even been the site of one of Avraham's altars: {:he} >ויעתק משם ההרה מקדם לבית אל ויט אהלה; בית אל מים והעי מקדם ויבן שם מזבח לה׳ ויקרא בשם ה׳׃ --בראשית יב:ח Calling בית אל,‎ "המקום", "*the* place", is significant. The Torah never mentions Jerusalem. It was entirely reasonable that the future בית המקדש would be in בית אל. Rav Medan suggests that שילה, where Yehoshua builds the משכן, was in fact in בית אל (we discussed this in <//פרשת ויחי תשע״ט>). *The* place in the Torah refers to the place where the שכינה is best felt; where heaven meets earth: {:he} >מזבח אדמה תעשה לי וזבחת עליו את עלתיך ואת שלמיך את צאנך ואת בקרך; בכל הַמָּקוֹם אשר אזכיר את שמי אבוא אליך וברכתיך׃ --שמות כ:כא {:he} >כי אם אל הַמָּקוֹם אשר יבחר ה׳ אלקיכם מכל שבטיכם לשום את שמו שם לשכנו תדרשו ובאת שמה׃ --דברים יב:ה I would call this a פשט קרוב לדרש; it is an "unadorned" reading of the text, *as a text*, but it expresses the essence of the midrash cited by Rashi: {:he} >אני אומר שנעקר הר המוריה ובא לכאן, וזו היא קפיצת הארץ האמורה בשחיטת חלין, שבא בית המקדש לקראתו עד בית אל, וזהו ויפגע במקום. --רש״י, בראשית כח:יז {:he} >כי מטא לחרן אמר אפשר עברתי על מקום שהתפללו אבותי ואני לא התפללתי כד יהיב דעתיה למיהדר קפצה ליה ארעא מיד ”ויפגע במקום“. --חולין צא,ב <hr/> But the language remains a problem. פגע refers to encountering (people, things): {:he} >ויעקב הלך לדרכו; ויפגעו בו מלאכי אלקים׃ --בראשית לב:ב It shouldn't refer to places (unless Yaakov tripped and face-planted into the dirt). And *כי* בא השמש doesn't fit: "he encountered the place *because* the sun set"? So Rashi brings another דרש: {:he} >ורבותינו פרשו לשון תפלה, כמו (ירמיהו ז:טז) [וְאַתָּה אַל תִּתְפַּלֵּל בְּעַד הָעָם הַזֶּה וְאַל תִּשָּׂא בַעֲדָם רִנָּה וּתְפִלָּה] וְאַל תִּפְגַּע בִּי, ולמדנו שתקן תפלת ערבית. --רש״י, בראשית כח:יא {:he} >ופי' בַּמָּקוֹם שמו של הקב"ה ונקרא כן לפי שהוא מקומו של עולם. --מזרחי, שם {:he} ><em>ויפגע במקום</em>: רב הונא בשם רבי אמי אמר: מפני מה מכנין שמו של הקדוש ברוך הוא וקוראין אותו מקום, שהוא מקומו של עולם ואין עולמו מקומו, מן מה דכתיב (שמות לג:כא): הִנֵּה מָקוֹם אִתִּי, הוי הקדוש ברוך הוא מקומו של עולם ואין עולמו מקומו. --בראשית רבה סח:ט In Mishnaic Hebrew, המקום is a common euphemism for ה׳; we use it today in phrases like המקום ינחם אתכם בתוך שאר אבלי ציון וירושלים. The Midrash is claiming that this is the usage here. ויפגע במקום means Yaakov encounters המקום, G-d, at this moment, because the sun has set, and his designated time for תפילה is evening. תפילה is an encounter with the divine. There is one more hint to this usage in תנ״ך: {:he} >כי אם החרש תחרישי בעת הזאת רוח והצלה יעמוד ליהודים ממקום אחר ואת ובית אביך תאבדו; ומי יודע אם לעת כזאת הגעת למלכות׃ --אסתר ד:יד Though Ibn Ezra really doesn't like it: {:he} >לא מצאנו במקרא שנקרא השם מקום. ואל תשים לבך לדרש ”ממקום אחר“, כי איננו כלל על השם. ומלת אחר לעד. --אבן עזרא, בראשית כח:יא <hr/> But in our pasuk, Ibn Ezra's פשט effectively means "He prayed at the place (where one encounters G-d) for the sun had set", and Rashi's דרש means "He prayed to G-d (who is called “The Place”), for the sun had set. They are not very different; “The Place” is a metonym for הקב״ה himself. But Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky is struck by the use of the term המקום as a euphemism for G-d's name. It's *not* a "name of G-d"; you are allowed to erase it or say it in otherwise inappropriate circumstances. {:he} >ראה פת ואמר ”כמה נאה פת זו! ברוך המקום שבראה!“, יצא. ראה תאנה ואמר ”כמה נאה תאנה זו! ברוך המקום שבראה!“ יצא; דברי ר' מאיר. ר' יוסי אומר: כל המשנה ממטבע שטבעו חכמים בברכות לא יצא ידי חובתו. --ברכות מ,ב {:he} >נראה לי דהתנא רוצה להסביר לנו איך יתכן שיבדה אדם מלבו ברכה שלא תיקנו חכמים, ולפיכך הסביר לנו דהיינו שראה פת או תאנה יפים ומרוב התפעלות יצאו מפיו דברים אלו: כמה נאה פת זו ברוך המקום שבראה, ובזה חידש ר״מ שיצא, והיינו אע״פ שהוא לא כיון כלל לצאת ידי ברכה, מ״מ כיון שסוף סוף בירך על הפת או על התאנה יצא. ולפ״ז לא מיירי הכא באחד שרצה לברך ברכות הנהנין, אלא דיבר בלשון המדוברת בשוק, ושם לא מזכירים בפירוש שם ומלכות, אלא רק ברמז אומרים. --אמת ליעקב, בראשית כח:יא He then makes a radical suggestion: {:he} >ואפשר שכן כינו את השם מפני שחששו להוציא שם שמים ואמרו ”מקום“, וא״כ בשפה המדוברת נעשה שם זה כלומר רק רמז אני מזכיר במקום השם. > הערה 4: בשיחה עם תלמידיו ביאר רבינו שלשון ”המקום“ ביאורו כמו ”בִּמְקוֹם“, במקום לומר שם ה', רק אח״כ אמרו פשטים שונים--שהוא מקומו של עולם ואין העולם מקומו וכדומה, אבל הפשט הוא כנ״ל. --אמת ליעקב, בראשית כח:יא Similarly, {:he} >הערה 5: לפי זה ביאר רבינו את נוסח ההגדה ”ברוך המקום ברוך הוא וכו'“, והיינו שכל ההגדה נאמרה בדרך סיפור [ולא תלמוד תורה--ד. וו.], ואז לא הותר להזכיר שם ה'--דרק בדרך לימוד הותר לעשות כן, ולכן כשרצה בעל ההגדה לברך את שם ה' הזכיר שם ”המקום“. --אמת ליעקב, בראשית כח:יא המקום is exactly like our "השם"; it is placeholder word (literally!) without any meaning of its own. And Rav Kamenetsky says that this is sense of the midrashic use of the word here: {:he} >ולפ״ז נפתח לנו פתח להבין את לשון הפסוק הכא: ”ויפגע במקום“, והיינו כפי שפירש״י שיעקב באמת הא לא היה מוכן לזה, אלא שנתן דעתו לחזור להר המוריה ולא הרגיש שקפצה לו הדרך והוא נמצא כבר בהר המוריה--שהרי למחרתו אמר ”אכן יש ה' במקום הזה ואנכי לא ידעתי“, ולפיכך היה הוא רק כמבקש בעלמא [ואפשר דלפיכך נשארה תפלת ערבית רשות], ולכן השתמש רק בשם המקום, שהוא רק כמבקש רחמים בעת צרה. ולפיכך גם נשאר שם זה בבקור חולים ובנחום אבלים, ודו״ק היטב. --אמת ליעקב, בראשית כח:יא ויפגע במקום is an expression of תפילה that is מבקש רחמים בעת צרה, when we aren't really in a position to speak to ה׳ “correctly”, בשם ומלכות. That is Yaakov's תפילה,‎ תפלת ערבית. >/Tefillat maariv/, the evening prayer, symbolizes...when our insecurity rises to the fore. > The /maariv/ prayer includes /Hashkivenu/, which focuses on the frightening experience of entrusting one's soul to G-d--akin to death--and then revival. In effect, during /maariv/, we pray to G-d for survival. Is is therefore appropriate that Jacob introduced /maariv/ at the place (במקום). He prayed for survival...We, the decendants of Jacob who were and continue to be exposed to numerous attempts to destroy us, follow in his footsteps and continue to recite the /maariv/ prayer, asking G-d for our survival. --Rav Yosef Dov Halevi Soloveitchik, in Rabbi Avishai David, ed., [_Darosh Darash Yosef_](https://oupress.org/product/darosh-darash-yosef/), p. 84 Rabbi Shulman has talked about what it means when we say that תפלת ערבית רשות. He says that there is a halachic requirement to pray when we are in distress (this is the famous argument between Rambam and Ramban, whether there is a requirement to pray when we are *not* in distress). /Maariv/ represents that prayer. But the truth is that we always need something; if we think we do not need to pray, then we are fooling ourselves. תפלת ערבית is רשות, but it is not optional. Yaakov's encounter with ה׳,‎ ויפגע במקום, as night begins and he goes out into גלות, is an expression of that. This is a prayer when he feels distant from הקב״ה‎ (ואנכי לא ידעתי), and so he is not addressing Him directly, but only with a euphemism. But the truth is that this is a פגיעה, an encounter that brings us into virtual contact with ה׳:‎ אכן יש ה' במקום. The realization that we are far from ה׳ is what brings us closer. <figure lang="en"><blockquote lang="en"> <p>Thus, in a fascinating way, there is a circular movement in the act of prayer: one recites the liturgy in order to remind oneself of one’s existential situation.
