This week we read the haftorah for פרשת האזינו. It's not common to have this haftorah. The way we read the Torah, נצבים is always read before ראש השנה (it's the parasha of teshuva) and וזאת הברכה is always read on שמחת תורה, so there are only two parshiot for the 11 days from after ראש השנה, skipping יום כפור, until before סוכות. Usually there's only one שבת in there, שבת שובה, which gets its own haftorah. Only when ראש השנה is on Monday or Tuesday is there an extra שבת for האזינו to get its own haftorah. The haftorah is שמואל ב פרק כב, שירת דוד. It is a שירה, like האזינו, and it shares some language with האזינו, which may explain the connection. But thematically it could not be more different. שירת דוד is a celebration of David's victories with ה׳'s help (or really ה׳'s victories with David watching). It's a standard שירה in תנ״ך: "they tried to kill us, G-d saved us, let's sing". It would go well as the haftorah for אז ישיר, and in fact it is the haftorah for the seventh day of פסח, when we read שירת הים. But האזינו is different. It's a prophecy of rebuke, like ירמיהו or the first part of ישעיהו. Moshe even introduces it saying (דברים לא:ב) "I'm getting too old for this". (Thanks to Tani Cohn for that insight). So why is it the haftorah now? I think it is not so much the haftorah for האזינו as the haftorah introducing סוכות. <hr/> What is סוכות all about? <blockquote lang=he><p><b>מא</b> וחגתם אתו חג לה׳ שבעת ימים בשנה; חקת עולם לדרתיכם בחדש השביעי תחגו אתו׃ <b>מב</b> בסכת תשבו שבעת ימים; כל האזרח בישראל ישבו בסכת׃ <b>מג</b> למען ידעו דרתיכם כי בסכות הושבתי את בני ישראל בהוציאי אותם מארץ מצרים; אני ה׳ אלהיכם׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא פרק כג</footer></blockquote> The Tur goes into great detail discussing the reason for the mitzvah: <blockquote lang=he><p>דתניא (ויקרא כג) כי בסוכות הושבתי את בני ישראל ענני כבוד היו דברי ר׳ אליעזר ר״ע אומר סוכות ממש עשו להם</p> <footer class=source>סוכה יא,ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>תלה הכתוב מצות סוכה ביציאת מצרים...לפי שהוא דבר שראינו בעינינו ובאזנינו שמענו ואין אדם יכול להכחישנו והיא המורה על אמיתת מציאות הבורא יתעלה...כאשר עשה עמנו בהוציאו אותנו מארץ מצרים באותות ובמופתים והסוכות שאומר הכתוב שהושיבנו בהם הם ענני כבודו שהקיפן בהם לבל יכה בהם שרב ושמש ודוגמא לזה צונו לעשות סוכות כדי שנזכור נפלאותיו ונוראותיו </p> <footer class=source>טור אורח חיים הלכות סוכה סימן תרכה </footer></blockquote> This is very unusual. The Tur is is "paskening" an aggadah, which we generally never find it necessary to do. And he's bringing the reason for the mitzvah, rather than just stating the conclusion. The Bach explains: <blockquote lang=he><p>איכא למידק בדברי רבינו שאין זה מדרכו בחיבורו זה לבאר הכונה לשום מקרא שבתורה כי לא בא רק לפסוק הוראה או להורות מנהג ופה האריך לבאר ולדרוש המקרא דבסכת תשבו ויראה לי לומר בזה שסובר דכיון דכתיב למען ידעו וגו׳ לא קיים המצוה כתיקונה אם לא ידע כוונת מצות הסוכה כפי פשטה ולכן ביאר לפי הפשט דעיקר הכוונה בישיבת הסוכה שיזכור יציאת מצרים.</p> <footer class=source>ב״ח, שם</footer></blockquote> Just like on פסח, part of the mitzvah is experiential: we have to feel surrounded by the ענני הכבוד, to feel the presence of ה׳ directly protecting us. The Gra explains that this is why סוכות is is תשרי: <blockquote lang=he><p> סוכות בתשרי כוון שהוא נגד היקף ענני כבוד היה ראוי לעשות בניסן כי בניסן היה תחילת היקף עננים. אכל נראה לפי שכשעשו את העגל נסתלקו העננים ואז לא חזרו עד שהתחילו לעשות המשכן. ומשה ירד ביוה״כ. ובמחרת יו׳׳כ ויקהל משה וציוה על מלאכת המשכן וזה היה בי״א תשרי וכתיב והעם הביאו עוד נדבה בבקר בבקר, ב׳ ימיש הרי י״ג בתשרי. ובי״ד בתשרי נטלו כל חכם לב ממשה אח הזהב במנין ומשקל ובט״ו התחילו לעשות. <em>ואז חזרו ענני כבוד</em> ולכך אנו עושין סוכות בט״ו בתשרי. </p> <footer class=source> <a href="http://hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=14230&st=&pgnum=10&hilite=">פירוש הגר׳׳א, שיר השירים א:ד</a></footer></blockquote> Rav Hutner (פחד יצחק סוכות ט:ו) extends this idea to our observance of סוכות: it is the experience of the return of ה׳'s protection, the sense of the שכינה, after our תשובה of the יומים נוראים. <hr/> This message--seeing ה׳'s protection in our everyday lives--is exactly what the haftorah is about. <blockquote lang=he><p>וידבר דוד לה׳ את דברי השירה הזאת ביום הציל ה׳ אתו <br/> מכף כל איביו ומכף שאול׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב כב:א</footer></blockquote> This is David's theme song, the one he sang after every victory. He sees ה׳'s hand whenever he is saved. Note for those in the Tanach class: David does not count Saul as one of כל איביו. <blockquote lang=he><p> <b>ב</b> ויאמר; ה׳ סלעי ומצדתי <br/> ומפלטי לי׃ <b>ג</b> אלקי צורי אחסה בו; מגני וקרן ישעי <br/> משגבי ומנוסי משעי מחמס תשעני׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק כב</footer></blockquote> There's a lot of parallelism here. We could read this "sharply" (as James Kugel puts it) and try to understand the specific nuance of every synonym here (and we will in the Tanach class) but now just note that the repetition gives us the sense of constancy. ה׳ is סלעי over and over again. One interesting phrase is קרן ישעי. Generally קרן is a metaphor for strength, but the מהר״י קרא takes it a little more literally and makes it a different metaphor: <blockquote lang=he><p>מנהג העולם כשישא גוי אל גוי חרב המתגבר על עם אחר תוקע קרן ישע להשמיע שנתגבר על אויבו.</p> <footer class=source>מהר״י קרא, שמואל ב כב:ג</footer></blockquote> I see it as the bugle of the cavalry riding in to save the day. <blockquote lang=en><p>And as if in answer there came from far away another note. Horns, horns, horns. In dark Mindolluin's sides they dimly echoed. Great horns of the North wildly blowing. Rohan had come at last</p> <footer class=source>The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King</footer></blockquote> I don't have time to look at every pasuk in detail (you should at least pay attention when we read it), but I would note one pasuk that makes the connection to סוכות explicit: <blockquote lang=he><p>וַיָּשֶׁת חֹשֶׁךְ סְבִיבֹתָיו סֻכּוֹת; חַשְׁרַת מַיִם עָבֵי שְׁחָקִים׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב כב:יב</footer></blockquote> and the corresponding pasuk in תהילים is more explicit: <blockquote lang=he><p> יָשֶׁת חֹשֶׁךְ סִתְרוֹ סְבִיבוֹתָיו סֻכָּתוֹ; חֶשְׁכַת מַיִם עָבֵי שְׁחָקִים׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים יח:יב</footer></blockquote> ה׳'s סוכה is His עָבֵי שְׁחָקִים, the clouds that both protect and obscure His hand in the world. <hr/> Let's move on to the last pasuk, familiar to us from bentching: <blockquote lang=he><p>מגדיל (מִגְדּוֹל) יְשׁוּעוֹת מַלְכּוֹ; וְעֹשֶׂה חֶסֶד לִמְשִׁיחוֹ לְדָוִד וּלְזַרְעוֹ עַד עוֹלָם׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב כב:נא</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>מַגְדִּל יְשׁוּעוֹת מַלְכּוֹ; וְעֹשֶׂה חֶסֶד לִמְשִׁיחוֹ לְדָוִד וּלְזַרְעוֹ עַד עוֹלָם׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק יח:נא</footer></blockquote> We say מַגְדִּל on weekdays and מִגְדּוֹל on Shabbat (and other holidays). It's not clear why we do this. Baruch Epstein gives a well-known reason: <blockquote lang=he><p> המנהג אצלנו לומר בנוסח ברכת המזון את לשון הפסוק ”מגדיל ישועות מלכו“ (אשר בספר שמואל ב׳ ובתהלים), ואומרים בחול ”מגדיל“, ובשבת ”מגדול“, וכן מצוין בסדורים: ”בשבת מגדול“.</p> ... <p>ובנוסח ברכת המזון הובא הנוסח מתהלים — ”מגדיל“ מפני שעיקר מקומה של פרשה זו הוא בתהלים בין יתר קובץ תהלות דוד. ואחד הסופרים המעתיקים את הסדור בכתיבת יד (קודם שנתגלה הדפום) או הבעלים של הסדור רשם לו בגליון כזה: ”<em>בשב</em>׳ מגדול“.</p> ... <p> ושוב חשב אחד המעתיקים הבאים, כי המלה ”בשב׳ מגדול“ פתרונה בשבת כלומר, שבשבת אומרים ”מגדול“, ולא חשב הרבה, וכתב בסדורו הנעתק על ידו מפורש ”בשבת מגדול“, ומאותה ההעתקה בא להעתקה שניה, ומשניה לשלישית וכן להלאה ומכת״י לדפוס, ומדפוס לדפוס כיום הזה!</p> <p>ומכל זה מבואר, שאין כל הבדל בין הלשונות, ואפשר לומר ”מגדיל“ כפי הכתיב בתהלים וכן ”מגדול“ כפי הקרי בשמואל ב׳, וכזה כן זה בין בחול בין בשבת. ובנוסח ברכת המזון ברמב״ם בא הנוסח בסתמא ”מגדול“.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=48315&st=&pgnum=253">ברוך אפשטין, מקור ברוך כו:ג</a></footer></blockquote> We like this answer; it lets us feel superior to those ignorant primitives who came before us who couldn't even read the notes correctly. However, as Rabbi Raymond Apple <a href="http://www.oztorah.com/2013/03/magdil-migdol-liturgical-responses-to-textual-variants/">points out</a>, this cannot be right. To understand why, we need to review some history. This comes from <a href="http://strangeside.com/bible-origin-of-chapters-and-verses/">an article</a> by Dovid Hoffman, a columnist for the Yated Ne'eman. <blockquote lang=en> <p>The division of the book of Samuel into two parts was introduced by Cardinal Stephen Langton in the early 13th century [the Septuagint has Samuel and Kings in one, 4-part book called Kingdoms 1, Kingdoms 2, Kingdoms 3, etc.].</p> <p> The first Jew to utilize this system in a manuscript was probably Rav Shlomo ben Yishmael who did so in about 1330, explaining that that this was a great bonus during the theological disputations of the times.</p> <blockquote lang=en><p>These are the chapters, known as kapitels, invented by the non-Jews for the twenty-four books, and the names of the twenty-four books in their tongue, which we copied from them so that a person should be able to give them a quick reply to their questions that they ask us every day regarding our belief and the holy Torah, when they cite proofs from Torah verses, the Nevi’im, or other seforim, and say to us – see and read in that book regarding that verse of that chapter, and we do not know what the chapters are in order to provide a swift answer. Therefore, I copied them.</p></blockquote> <p>[But it did not gain widespread use until Daniel Bomberg invented the מקראות גדולות in 1518. He was a Christian printer who figured Jews loved books, so he could make lots of money selling books to them (he also invented the modern Shas, with the pagination we use today).] His editor, <i lang=he>Chacham</i> Yaakov ben Chaim of Tunisia explained in his introduction that he was forced to utilize [an older, Jewish] Concordance [that adopted the Christian system] to write his textual notes where he compares verses to one another, since without its clear chapter and verse system, it would be impossible for readers to know which verses he was referring to.</p> <footer class=source>from Hoffman's article</footer></blockquote> Why is this relevant? The Rishon David Abudraham wrote one of the first commentaries on the siddur. On ברכת המזון he writes: <blockquote lang=he><p> וקבלתי מרבתי כי בשבת לומר מגדול ישועות בוי״ו ובחול מגדל ביו״ד ונ״ל הטעם מפני שהשבת הוא מלך גדול כנגד החול.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=26840&st=&pgnum=173">ספר אבודרהם, סדר ברכת המזון ופירושה</a></footer></blockquote> The Abudraham wrote his book in 1339, so it is unlikely (to say the least) that siddur writers were labelling פסוקים as שמואל ב׳, if no one called it שמואל ב׳. So why the difference in readings? It's not clear what Abudraham means by השבת הוא מלך גדול, but it may be (based on the Abarbanel) that מַגְדִּל is a present-tense verb, with the sense that ה׳ is <em>making</em> His salvation great: ישועה is an ongoing process. שבת is מעין עולם הבא; we see the ישועה as an already-completed מִגְדּוֹל. And when we thank ה׳ for His salvation (especially on סוכות, which really is the holiday of Thanksgiving), we notice that David describes himself with three terms: <blockquote lang=he><p>והתבונן בפסוק הזה שאמר מלכו ומשיחו ודוד, ענינו אצלי שדוד המלך עליו השלום ראה עצמו בשלש מדרגות, האתת בהיותו מלך על ישראל, והשנית קודם זה בהיותו משוח על יד שמואל למלך קודם שנמלך בפעל עם הימים אשר היה נרדף משאול ער יום מותו, והמדרגה השלישית היא קודם המשיחה בהיותו לבד דור בן ישי רועה צאן, ואמר שבכל שלשת הזמנים האלה עשה הא־ל יתברך עמו להפליא.</p> <footer class=source>אברבנאל, שמואל ב:כב</footer></blockquote> So, as we approach סוכות we have an obligation to relive the ענני הכבוד and feel ה׳'s immediate protection of all of us, from מלכו down to the פּאָשעט דוד, and hope for the completed מִגְדּוֹל יְשׁוּעוֹת, במהרה בימינו.
