This week we go back to the beginning, and I want to look at Rashi's approach to creation. We do not have a real "introduction" to Rashi's commentary, but he does tell us his goals in writing it: {:he} > ואני לא באתי אלא לפשוטו של מקרא ולאגדה המישבת דברי המקרא דבר דבור על אפניו, ובמשמעו. --רש״י, בראשית ג:ח Rashi is going to tell us the פשט, the meaning of the text unadorned by תורה שבעל פה, and a selection of אגדה that מישבת דברי המקרא...על אפניו, that establishes the bases for understanding the text correctly (and, {:la}/inter alia/, some dictionary definitions: משמעו). But מעשה בראשית, the story of creation, doesn't get a פשט interpretation. {:he} >בראשית ברא אלקים; את השמים ואת הארץ׃ --בראשית א:א {:he} ><em>בראשית ברא</em>: אין המקרא הזה אומר אלא דרשני...ולא בא המקרא להורות סדר הבריאה לומר שאלו קדמו. --רש״י, בראשית א:א And aggadot that Rashi brings are consistent. They tell us that, while the story of creation looks smooth and divinely perfect, we need to look at the world as though nothing went right. > “If Hashem wanted life to be smooth, He could make it that way,” Shifra Miriam [Erlich] emphasizes in her workshops. “But He wants it to be challenging so there’s opportunity for growth...” In fact, she continues, the fact that things go wrong has been built into the very essence of the world. She quotes an idea from Rabbi Avraham Chaim Carmell, who cites the Maharal and Rav Dessler: “On each of the six days of creation, something went ‘wrong,’ yet the Midrash says that at the end of creation, Hashem marveled at His work and said, “/V’hinei tov meod/...,” despite, or maybe because of, the imperfections. --C.S. Teitelbaum, [_From Sour to Strong_](https://mishpacha.com/from-sour-to-strong/) It starts from the very Name that G-d uses to create: {:he} ><em>ברא אלקים</em>: ולא נאמר בָּרָא ה', שבתחלה עלה במחשבה לבראתו במדת הדין, ראה שאין העולם מתקים, הקדים מדת רחמים ושתפה למדת הדין, והיינו דכתיב (בראשית ב:ד) בְּיוֹם עֲשׂוֹת ה' אֱלֹקִים אֶרֶץ וְשָׁמָיִם. --רש״י, בראשית א:א And every day, Rashi sees in the text the דרש that ה׳ changed His mind. עלה במחשבה didn't actually happen. Sunday: {:he} ><em>וירא אלקים את האור כי טוב ויבדל</em>: אף בזה אנו צריכין לדברי אגדה, ראהו שאינו כדאי להשתמש בו רשעים, והבדילו לצדיקים לעתיד לבא. --רש״י, בראשית א:ד Monday (we talked about this in <//פרשת בראשית תשפ״א>): {:he} ><em>[ויאמר אלקים ] יהי רקיע</em>:...קרשו בשני מגערת הקב"ה באמרו יהי רקיע, וזהו שכתב (איוב כו:יא) עַמּוּדֵי שָׁמַיִם יְרוֹפָפוּ [ וְיִתְמְהוּ מִגַּעֲרָתוֹ]...כאדם שמשתומם ועומד מגערת המאים עליו. --רש״י, בראשית א:ו Tuesday: {:he} ><b>יא</b> ויאמר אלקים תדשא הארץ דשא עשב מזריע זרע עץ פרי עשה פרי למינו אשר זרעו בו על הארץ; ויהי כן׃ <b>יב</b> ותוצא הארץ דשא עשב מזריע זרע למינהו ועץ עשה פרי אשר זרעו בו למינהו; וירא אלקים כי טוב׃ --בראשית פרק א {:he} ><em>עץ פרי</em>: שיהא טעם העץ כטעם הפרי. והיא לא עשתה כן, אלא (א:יב) וַתּוֹצֵא הָאָרֶץ...עֵץ עֹשֶׂה פְּרִי ולא העץ פרי. --רש״י, בראשית א:יא Wednesday: {:he} ><em>[ויעש אלקים את שני] המארת הגדולים</em>: שוים נבראו, ונתמעטה הלבנה על שקטרגה ואמרה אי אפשר לשני מלכים שישתמשו בכתר אחד. --רש״י, בראשית א:טז Thursday: {:he} ><em>[ויברא אלקים את] התנינם [הגדלים]</em>:...בדברי אגדה הוא לויתן ובן זוגו שבראם זכר ונקבה והרג את הנקבה ומלחה לצדיקים לעתיד לבא, שאם יפרו וירבו לא יתקים העולם בפניהם. --רש״י, בראשית א:כא And on Friday, the Torah itself gives us the "midrash" of what went wrong (we talked about this in <//שבת בראשית תשע״ז>). {:he} >ותרא האשה כי טוב העץ למאכל וכי תאוה הוא לעינים ונחמד העץ להשכיל ותקח מפריו ותאכל; ותתן גם לאישה עמה ויאכל׃ --בראשית ג:ו ---- This week I want to talk about Thursday; ה׳ midrashically created לויתן ובן זוגו...והרג את הנקבה. What is a לויתן that warrants its own ויברא, and that the world cannot survive with it but yet needs to be part of creation? I will not be talking about the role of לויתן in the final feast of the צדיקים לעתיד לבא; see the גור אריה on בראשית א:כא and בבא בתרא עד,ב. The נביאים use לויתן or תנין as a metaphor for the foreign powers that ה׳ will destroy in the future. {:he} > ביום ההוא יפקד ה׳ בחרבו הקשה והגדולה והחזקה על לויתן נחש ברח ועל לויתן נחש עקלתון; והרג את התנין אשר בים׃ --ישעיהו כז:א {:he} >דבר ואמרת כה אמר אדנ־י ה׳ הנני עליך פרעה מלך מצרים התנים הגדול הרבץ בתוך יאריו; אשר אמר לי יארי ואני עשיתני׃ --יחזקאל כט:ג But a metaphor only makes sense if the audience understands what the literal meaning represents. תהילים and איוב talk about the leviathan of מעשה בראשית. {:he .lines} ><b>יב</b> ואלקים מלכי מקדם; פעל ישועות בקרב הארץ׃ <b>יג</b> אתה פוררת בעזך ים; שברת ראשי תנינים על המים׃ <b>יד</b> אתה רצצת ראשי לויתן; תתננו מאכל לעם לציים׃ --תהילים פרק עד The image here is of ה׳, as part of creation, fighting the sea and the sea monsters. But ה׳ leaves some תנינים alive but under His control: {:he .lines} ><b>כד</b> מה רבו מעשיך ה׳ כלם בחכמה עשית; מלאה הארץ קנינך׃ <b>כה</b> זה הים גדול ורחב ידים; שם רמש ואין מספר; חיות קטנות עם גדלות׃ <b>כו</b> שם אניות יהלכון; לויתן זה יצרת לשחק בו׃ <b>כז</b> כלם אליך ישברון לתת אכלם בעתו׃ --תהילים פרק קד {:he .lines} ><b>כה</b> תמשך לויתן בחכה; ובחבל תשקיע לשנו׃ <b>כו</b> התשים אגמן באפו; ובחוח תקב לחיו׃ --איוב פרק מ So ה׳ both destroys and controls לויתן. That is לויתן ובן זוגו. We are going to take aggadot seriously if not literally, and I think the key to the symbolism is תהילים פרק עד that equates with ה׳'s battle with לויתן to the battle with the ים itself. כלי יקר tells us that we look at the תכלת of ציצית and think of the ים and appreciate ה׳'s מדת הדין, imposing structure and order on the universe. {:he} >לפי שמן הים אין ללמוד כי אם לעבוד את ה' מיראה...כמ"ש (ירמיהו ה:כב) הַאוֹתִי לֹא תִירָאוּ נְאֻם ה׳ אִם מִפָּנַי לֹא תָחִילוּ אֲשֶׁר שַׂמְתִּי חוֹל גְּבוּל לַיָּם [חָק עוֹלָם וְלֹא יַעַבְרֶנְהוּ וַיִּתְגָּעֲשׁוּ וְלֹא יוּכָלוּ וְהָמוּ גַלָּיו וְלֹא יַעַבְרֻנְהוּ] ש"מ שמן הים אין ללמוד כי אם היראה... --כלי יקר, במדבר טו:לח מים in בראשית is a symbol of formlessness, the primordial תהו ובהו (Maharal talks about this a lot, ואכמ״ל). And so the ים and the great תנינים are symbols of chaos, of disorder. It's worth noting that a world full of תנינים was part of the creation שבתחלה עלה במחשבה לבראתו במדת הדין; chaos can come from strict deterministic laws. >Chaos theory, in mechanics and mathematics, the study of apparently random or unpredictable behaviour in systems governed by deterministic laws. A more accurate term, deterministic chaos, suggests a paradox because it connects two notions that are familiar and commonly regarded as incompatible. The first is that of randomness or unpredictability...The second notion is that of deterministic motion, as that of a pendulum or a planet...exemplifying the success of science in rendering predictable that which is initially complex. --Britannica, [_chaos theory_](https://www.britannica.com/science/chaos-theory) Strict דין leads to תהו ובהו just as a lack of דין does. Human beings can only flourish in a world that is carefully balanced between law and chaos. ---- It's interesting that many cultures have, as part of their creation myths, a common theme. [Hermann Gunkel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermann_Gunkel), a German Lutheran, compared the Hebrew Bible to other near eastern religions and noted that the pagan mythologies all had a creation myth that started with a great battle between the sky god and the sea god (usually a serpent or dragon), that ended with the defeat of the dragon and the creation of the world. He called that the {:de}/Chaoskampf/, the "Chaos Battle", because the sea represents the chaos of the unformed world that has to be subdued by the sky god, representing order. And that seems to be what בראשית is describing: {:he} ><b>א</b> בראשית ברא אלקים את השמים ואת הארץ׃ <b>ב</b> והארץ היתה תהו ובהו וחשך על פני תהום; ורוח אלקים מרחפת על פני המים׃ --בראשית פרק א This doesn't mean that the Torah is derived from paganism; just the opposite is true. Pagan mythology is a degenerate version of the truth that humanity once knew. {:he} ><b>א</b> בימי אנוש טעו בני האדם טעות גדולה, ונבערה עצת חכמי אותו הדור; ואנוש עצמו, מן הטועים. וזו הייתה טעותם: אמרו הואיל והאל ברא כוכבים אלו וגלגלים אלו להנהיג את העולם, ונתנם במרום, וחלק להם כבוד, והם שמשים המשמשים לפניו--ראויים הם לשבחם ולפארם, ולחלוק להם כבוד... > <b>ב</b>...והתחילו על דרך זו לעשות צורות בהיכלות ותחת האילנות ובראשי ההרים ועל הגבעות, ומתקבצים ומשתחווים להם; ואומרין לכל העם שזו הצורה מטיבה ומריעה, וראוי לעובדה וליראה ממנה...וכיון שארכו הימים, נשתקע השם הנכבד והנורא מפי כל היקום ומדעתם, ולא הכירוהו: ונמצאו כל עם הארץ והנשים והקטנים, אינן יודעין אלא הצורה של עץ ואבן וההיכל של בניין, שנתחנכו מקטנותן להשתחוות להן ולעובדן, ולהישבע בשמן... --משנה תורה, הלכות עבודה זרה פרק א {:he} >וכן כשבאה האשורולוגיה לעולם ונקפה את הלבבות בדמיונים שמצאה...בין תורתנו הקדושה לדברים שבכתבי היתדות, בדעות, במוסר ובמעשים...וכי אין זה דבר מפורסם שהיה בין הראשונים יודעי דעת אלקים, נביאים וגדולי הרוח, מתושלח, חנוך, שם ועבר וכיו״ב, וכי אפשר הוא שלא פעלו כלום על בני דורם? אף על פי שלא הוכרה פעולתם כפעולתו הגדולה של איתן האזרחי אברהם אבינו ע״ה, איך אפשר שלא יהיה שום רושם כלל בדורותם מהשפעותיהם, והלא הם מוכרחים להיות דומים לענייני תורה!... > דברים כאלה וכיוצא באלה ראויים הם לעלות על לב כל מבין דבר בהשקפה הראשונה, ולא היה מקום כלל למציאות הכפירה השרלטנית שתתפשט בעולם, ושתתחזק על ידי המאורעות הללו. --[הראי״ה קוק, אדר היקר, עמ׳ מב](http://etzion.gush.net/vbm/archive/8-chaimi/08mhalacha.php) >Monotheism is not a higher stage of some process of growth following on a lower stage of polytheism. Monotheism is itself primary and basic; it has been the dominant mode of worship from as far back as human memory goes. All the other modes of religious faith came after it, and not before. G-d's answer to a suggestion might have been: I'm not yet ready for Judgment Day and retirement. Precipitating that final battle would destroy the balance between good and evil, freedom and order, creation and destruction, life and death...Conflict and tension is life, Job is shown; total victory over chaos would be followed by a terrible silence.
