Kavanot:

Thoughts on Tanach and the Davening

This was thrown together in the one day I had free between the end of yom tov and the beginning of Shabbat. I hope it makes sense.

>Each of my kids: "I'm bored!"
>
Me: "Good!"
--conversation in my house, too many times to count

Zohar Atkins notes that Sukkot, of all the holidays, doesn't involve *doing* anything. Pesach has its matzah and its seder; Shavuot is connected to the harvest and the mitzvot of לקט שכחה ופאה, [as we've discussed](/PrST+PnHs+TSPb/); Rosh Hashana has shofar and Yom Kippur its ענוי. But the mitzvot of Sukkot are to sit: בסכת תשבו שבעת ימים and holding some vegetables.

>The Jewish holiday of /Sukkot/ is one in which we are commanded just to be. We’ve worked hard on ourselves over the days of Awe and it’s time to rest. “Come and dwell in the Sukkah, no need to do much more.”
>
On Sukkot we are commanded to be joyful. But what is often overlooked is what it takes to get there. Paradoxically, Sukkot can be understood as a commandment to be bored, commandment to feel like there’s nothing to do.
--Zohar Atkins, [_The Joys of Being Bored_](https://etzhasadeh.substack.com/p/the-joys-of-being-bored)

And שמיני עצרת is even more boring: the definition of the day is only to be an עצרת: just stop. We have added the celebration of שמחת תורה, but in the Torah, there is nothing. The culmination of the cycle of the year's holidays is just a moment to stop.

And our parsha introduces the other "stopping point" in the Jewish calendar:

{:he}

The reason is worded slightly differently in the עשרת הדברות:

{:he}

שבת was more than stopping creation; it was the וינח ביום השביעי, the creation of מנוחה, that was the reason for ויברך אלקים את יום השביעי ויקדש אתו.

{:he}

What does מנוחה mean? We could look at "rest" as kind of negative good; a chance to get out of the bad things that happen when we don't rest. I've [quoted Benjamin Hoffman](/PrST+nH+TSPa/) before:

>Growing up Jewish, I thought that the traditional rules around the Sabbath were silly...Now I think that something like the traditional Jewish Sabbath is an important cultural adaptation to preserve leisure, that would otherwise be destroyed in an urbanized, technological civilization.
>
...On my first solo two-night camping trip, I forgot to bring a backup battery to charge my laptop or phone...Very quickly, I started being able to *think* about aspects of my situation that had been too overwhelming, too *in motion*, to get leverage on the day before. Because I wasn’t *dealing with them*. I wasn’t *keeping up* with anything. I was just present, where I was. I wished I’d done this years ago.
>
And then I realized: if I had keeping a Sabbath, it wouldn’t have taken years to take a step back from social momentum. I’d have gotten a chance within seven days of noticing that there was a problem. And seven days later, another chance, and so on.
>
...[W]hat is work? It is the activity of producing or maintaining the artifacts necessary for the ongoing production of sustenance. It is the activity of keeping up with reality.
>
...In Jewish law, it is permissible to break the Sabbath in an emergency situation, when lives are at stake. If something like the Orthodox Sabbath seems impossibly hard, or if you try to keep it but end up breaking it every week...*you are in a permanent state of emergency*. This is not okay. You are not doing okay.

That's certainly true, and gives שבת value. And the comments there note the similarity to Sukkot:

>Zvi Mowshowitz:...Makes me think that 'go camping or do some other extended thing in nature once a year each summer' might be a good ritual/holiday, in addition to the weekly version.
>
Benquo: Sukkot!

But מנוחה means something more.

{:he}

So מנוחה is the creation that keeps the world going. That's great for ה׳; but what does that mean for our שבת? We can stop creating התחדשות; the ל״ט מלאכות are all about technology. But how does מנוחה allow us to create without התחדשות?

My thought came from an essay by neuroscientist Erik Hoel, who presented a hypothesis for why we sleep and dream.

>Overfitting, a statistical concept, is when a neural network learns overly specifically, and therefore stops being generalizable. It learns too well. For instance, artificial neural networks have a training data set: the data that they learn from. All training sets are finite, and often the data comes from the same source and is highly correlated in some non-obvious way. Because of this, artificial neural networks are in constant danger of becoming overfitted. When a network becomes overfitted, it will be good at dealing with the training data set but will fail at data sets it hasn’t seen before. All learning is basically a tradeoff between specificity and generality in this manner.
>
...[D]reams are like the exercise of consciousness. Our cognitive and perceptual modules are use it or lose it, just like muscle mass. The dimensions are always shrinking, worn down by our overtraining on our boring and repetitive days. The imperative of life to minimize metabolic costs almost guarantees this...our phenomenological universes are always contracting.
--Erik Hoel, [_Exit the supersensorium_](https://erikhoel.substack.com/p/exit-the-supersensorium)

The מנוחה of שבת in the week, and the עצרת of שמיני עצרת in the year are exactly that for our identity, our sense of self. ששת ימים תעבד ועשית כל מלאכתך is important; it's the expression of our role in the created world. It is who we are supposed to be. But it's too easy for us to get overfitted into the things we do. מנוחה lets us see that we are more than the roles we fit into. It is the continuous creation of our selves without the pressure of התחדשות.

We move from the boring of doing the same thing over and over to the boring of doing nothing, and that allows us to grow.

>Ecclesiastes and its rabbinic interpretation form an emotional pair. It is by being bored (and thinking there is nothing new under the sun), that we are able to find that there is indeed newness in our midst. If we stopped ourselves from being bored we’d be worse off.
--Zohar Atkins, [_The Joys of Being Bored_](https://etzhasadeh.substack.com/p/the-joys-of-being-bored)

מנוחה and עצרת remove the limits remove the limits that the quotidian world places on us.
