The last section of ספר ויקרא is an appendix about various donations to the מקדש. {:he} ><b>א</b> וידבר ה׳ אל משה לאמר׃ <b>ב</b> דבר אל בני ישראל ואמרת אלהם איש כי יפלא נדר בערכך נפשת לה׳׃ <b>ג</b> והיה ערכך הזכר מבן עשרים שנה ועד בן ששים שנה; והיה ערכך חמשים שקל כסף בשקל הקדש׃...<b>ח</b> ואם מך הוא מערכך והעמידו לפני הכהן והעריך אתו הכהן; על פי אשר תשיג יד הנדר יעריכנו הכהן׃ --ויקרא פרק כז The various ערכך (the final ך is part of the word) or /erchin/ (or /arachin/) are a kind of נדר, so they is subject to the laws of נדרים that come up later in פרשת מטות: {:he} >איש כי ידר נדר לה׳ או השבע שבעה לאסר אסר על נפשו לא יחל דברו; ככל היצא מפיו יעשה׃ --במדבר ל:ג But the gemara uses the terms separately, to refer to two different models of "donating" people to the מקדש: {:he} >הכל מעריכין ונערכין, נודרים ונדרים, כהנים ולוים וישראלים, נשים ועבדים. --משנה ערכין א:א {:he} >הערך הוא שיאמר ערכי עלי או ערך פלוני על...וכבר ידעת שהתורה פסקה...אלו השיעורים אין מוסיפין עליהן ואין משגיחין בענין הנערך אלא לשניו בלבד. > והנדר הוא שיאמר דמי עלי או דמי פלוני עלי הרי זה נוטל מה ששוה אותו הנידר כאילו הוא עבד נמכר בשוק. --רמב"ם, משנה ערכין א:א {:he} ><b>א</b> הערכים הם נדר מכלל נדרי הקדש. שנאמר אִישׁ כִּי יַפְלִא נֶדֶר בְּעֶרְכְּךָ נְפָשֹׁת לַה׳. לפיכך חיבין עליהן משום לֹא יַחֵל דְּבָרוֹ ו(דברים כג:כב) לֹא תְאַחֵר לְשַׁלְּמוֹ ומשום כְּכׇל הַיֹּצֵא מִפִּיו יַעֲשֶׂה. > <b>ב</b> מצות עשה לדון בדיני ערכין כאשר מפרש בתורה. ואחד האומר ערכי עלי. או האומר ערך זה עלי. או ערך פלוני עלי. נותן הערך לפי שני הנערך והוא הדבר הקצוב שבתורה לא פחות ולא יתר... > <b>ח</b> אחד המעריך את היפה הבריא ואחד המעריך את הכעור החולה. אפלו היה הנערך מכה שחין או סומא או גדם ויש בו כל מום נותן לפי שניו כמו שכתוב בתורה. > <b>ט</b> הדמים אינן כערכין. כיצד? האומר דמי עלי או דמי זה עלי או דמי פלוני עלי...נותן מה שהוא שוה דינר או אלף כאלו הוא עבד הנמכר בשוק. > <b>י</b> והערכים כלן והדמים הכל סתמן לבדק הבית ויפלו הכל ללשכה שהיתה במקדש מוכנת לקדשי בדק הבית. --משנה תורה, הלכות ערכים וחרמין א׳ It's all very strange. Why the distinction? Why put ערכין at the end of ספר ויקרא, and not with the rest of נדרים? And why ערכין at all? >Of these two vehicles of /nedarim/, the institution of /damim/ seems much easier to understand...To be an attractive property for acquisition requires certain gifts, and the source of all gifts is Hashem. > Imagine a person simply overwhelmed with gratitude to Hashem for all the divine gifts bestowed upon him. In a moment of sheer gratitude, he decides to take the monetary sum total of those gifts and, so to speak, “buy” them back from Hashem: “/Dami alai/--here, Hashem, please, I beg of You to consider this gift to the Beis Hamikdash as a token of my appreciation for the endless kindness and gifts You so mercifully bestow on me”. > In this light, the institution of such /nedarim/ is one we can well understand. But what are we to make of /erchin/? What on earth would prompt a person to say the words /erchi alai/? There is nothing personal about this gift at all! If he wants to donate fifty /shekel/ to the Beis Hamikdash, let him pull out his checkbook and do so! Why do we need this special institution of /erchin/ vows? --Rabbi Moshe Eisemann, [_Depths of Majesty_](https://www.rabbieisemann.com/product/depth-of-majesty/), p. 254 Rabbi Eisemann connects this to a well-known aggadah: {:he .lines} ><b>ב</b> ה׳ אדנינו מה אדיר שמך בכל הארץ; אשר תנה הודך על השמים׃... <b>ד</b> כי אראה שמיך מעשה אצבעתיך ירח וכוכבים אשר כוננתה׃ <b>ה</b> מה אנוש כי תזכרנו; ובן אדם כי תפקדנו׃ <b>ו</b> ותחסרהו מעט מאלקים; וכבוד והדר תעטרהו׃... <b>י</b> ה׳ אדנינו; מה אדיר שמך בכל הארץ׃ --תהילים פרק ח {:he} > ואמר רבי יהושע בן לוי: בשעה שעלה משה למרום אמרו מלאכי השרת לפני הקדוש ברוך הוא: רבונו של עולם, מה לילוד אשה בינינו? אמר להן: לקבל תורה בא. אמרו לפניו: חמדה גנוזה שגנוזה לך...קודם שנברא העולם, אתה מבקש ליתנה לבשר ודם? (תהילים ח:ה) מָה אֱנוֹשׁ כִּי תִזְכְּרֶנּוּ וּבֶן אָדָם כִּי תִפְקְדֶנּוּ? (תהלים ח:ב) ה׳ אֲדֹנֵינוּ מָה אַדִּיר שִׁמְךָ בְּכׇל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר תְּנָה הוֹדְךָ עַל הַשָּׁמָיִם! > אמר לו הקדוש ברוך הוא למשה: החזיר להן תשובה. > אמר לפניו: רבונו של עולם, מתיירא אני שמא ישרפוני בהבל שבפיהם. אמר לו: אחוז בכסא כבודי וחזור להן תשובה... > אמר לפניו: רבונו של עולם, תורה שאתה נותן לי מה כתיב בה? (שמות כ:יג) לֹא תִּרְצָח, לֹא תִּנְאָף, לֹא תִּגְנֹב. קנאה יש ביניכם? יצר הרע יש ביניכם? > מיד הודו לו להקדוש ברוך הוא, שנאמר: (תהילים ח:י) ה׳ אֲדֹנֵינוּ מָה אַדִּיר שִׁמְךָ [בְּכׇל הָאָרֶץ], ואילו ”תנה הודך על השמים“ לא כתיב. מיד כל אחד ואחד נעשה לו אוהב... --שבת פח,ב-פט,א >A straightforward difficulty arises in reviewing this episode. These arguments do not seem to be so deep as to require Moshe Rabbeinu to take hold of the /kisei hakavod/! Surely any one of us could produce the very same arguments; why, then, did Hashem instruct Moshe Rabbeinu to hold on to the /kisei hakavod/ in order to make them? > I believe the answer is that the real response to the angels was not the actual arguments offered by Moshe Rabbeinu. It was the fact that he was able to grab hold of the /kisei hakavod/! That was what Hashem wanted to demonstrate to the angels— that His ultimate /ratzon/ was to have a creation that could at one and the same time stand with his feet planted on earth, yet be able to take hold of the /kisei hakavod/! --Rabbi Moshe Eisemann, [_Depths of Majesty_](https://www.rabbieisemann.com/product/depth-of-majesty/), p. 259 What does it mean, to hold on to the כסא הכבוד? The image of ה׳ sitting on a throne comes up many times in תנ״ך; the most explicit is from יחזקאל: {:he .lines} ><b>א</b> ויהי בשלשים שנה ברביעי בחמשה לחדש ואני בתוך הגולה על נהר כבר; נפתחו השמים ואראה מראות אלקים׃... <b>כו</b> וממעל לרקיע אשר על ראשם כמראה אבן ספיר דמות כסא; ועל דמות הכסא דמות כמראה אדם עליו מלמעלה׃... <b>כח</b> כמראה הקשת אשר יהיה בענן ביום הגשם כן מראה הנגה סביב הוא מראה דמות כבוד ה׳; ואראה ואפל על פני ואשמע קול מדבר׃ --יחזקאל פרק א Moshe and the elders saw a similar image before מעמד הר סיני: {:he} ><b>ט</b> ויעל משה ואהרן נדב ואביהוא ושבעים מזקני ישראל׃<br/> <b>י</b> ויראו את אלקי ישראל; ותחת רגליו כמעשה לבנת הספיר וכעצם השמים לטהר׃ --שמות פרק כד We obviously need to read these as metaphors.  --The Order of the Stick, [_Two Villages_](http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1262.html) Rambam dedicates the first section of מורה נבוכים to making understanding of these word pictures. {:he} >לפיכך הכוונה ב"כסא" כאן ובכל מקום דומה לו--תפארתו וגדולתו... --מורה נבוכים א:ט {:he} >יש לו [למילה ”רגל“] גם משמעות של סיבתיות (בראשית ל:ל): וַיְבָרֶךְ ה' אֹתְךָ לְרַגְלִי--בסיבתי, כלומר בגללי...הרי אותו דבר־מה הוא סיבה לדבר. --מורה נבוכים א:כח {:he} ><em>כמעשה לבנת הספיר</em>:...והוא עצמו מה שראה יחזקאל ”כמראה אבן ספיר דמות כסא“, רק שיחזקאל ראה כמראה אבן והם ראו כמעשה לבנת, שיש הבדל בין אבן ובין לְבֵנָה, שהאבן מתהוה בטבע לא על ידי מעשה בני אדם, והלבנה עשויה על ידי בני אדם...בעת שראו הזקנים את המרכבה, אז היתה ההנהגה...לפי מעשה הדור וצדקתם, לכן ראו לבנת הספיר שהלבנה נעשה ע"י בני אדם. > וראה את הכסא כמראה אבן ספיר שהוא מוכן לקבל כל המראות...וחזה השפע היורדת מהאלקות...בשבעה גווני הקשת כמה שכתוב ”כמראה הקשת אשר יהיה בענן ביום הגשם וגו'“, ונקרא אבן ספיר על שם...שמושך הכח מהספירות שלמעלה. --מלבי"ם, שמות כד:י The image is of לבנת הספיר, the man-made sapphire brick that refracts the divine light into all the colors of the spectrum. The כסא הכבוד represents how we experience the Divine in this world, in all the myriad ways we call חסד or גבורה or תפארת, etc. They are called ספירות from this image of the ספיר prism that refracts ה׳'s אחדות into those ways it is manifest. The לבנת הספיר is under the רגלים of ה׳, with the משמעות של סיבתיות, something caused by ה׳ indirectly. Part of that manifestation is created by human beings, by *us*, when we act with חסד or גבורה etc. Our actions can be the manifestation of the שכינה in the world. That is what the pasuk means when it says ותחסרהו מעט מאלקים; וכבוד והדר תעטרה, and that is what it means to be human. We all are created בצלם אלקים and we all are crowned with that כבוד והדר. >Now comes the /parsha/ of /erchin/. /Erchin/ tells us that although we are aware of the option of /damim/, whereby we can give our perceived physical value, we opt for a different system. We pointedly use the /eirech/, a metric that expresses the value of the humanity of the person. > Our health, size, and skills make no difference. I can be the greatest of the great or the poorest of the poor— it makes no difference. What I am thanking Hashem for is the gift of humanity, the gift of being a creation who has within him the potential to grasp hold of the /kisei hakavod/!
