After Avshalom has his brother murdered, he runs: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>לד</b> ויברח אבשלום; ויישא הנער הצופה את עיניו וירא והנה עם רב הולכים מדרך אחריו מצד ההר׃ <b>לה</b> ויאמר יונדב אל המלך הנה בני המלך באו; כדבר עבדך כן היה׃ <b>לו</b> ויהי ככלותו לדבר והנה בני המלך באו וישאו קולם ויבכו; וגם המלך וכל עבדיו בכו בכי גדול מאוד׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק יג</footer></blockquote> Avshalom must have planned his escape; he knew that he couldn't just murder his brohter and get away with it. And here we have Yonadav reassuring David that the rumors were false, (שמואל ב יג:לב)‎ אל יאמר אדני את כל הנערים בני המלך המיתו כי אמנון לבדו מת. <a href="/Father+of+Peace/">Last shiur</a> we said that Yondav knew what happened because he was (שמואל ב יג:ג)‎ איש חכם מאד, and (תמיד לב:א)‎ איזהו חכם הרואה את הנולד. But here we have the possibility that Yonadav was a plant, that <em>Avshalom</em> was the רואה את הנולד. Yonadav puts enough doubt in David's mind as to Avshalom's motives, so David won't go chasing after him and he has a chance to escape. <blockquote lang=he><p><b>לז</b> ואבשלום ברח וילך אל תלמיי בן עמיהוד מלך גשור; ויתאבל על בנו כל הימים׃ <b>לח</b> ואבשלום ברח וילך גשור; ויהי שם שלוש שנים׃ <b>לט</b> ותכל דויד המלך לצאת אל אבשלום; כי ניחם על אמנון כי מת׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק יג</footer></blockquote> Why does Avshalom run to the king of Geshur? It's his grampa: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ב</b> וילדו (ויולדו) לדוד בנים בחברון; ויהי בכורו אמנון לאחינעם היזרעאלת׃ <b>ג</b> ומשנהו כלאב לאביגל (לאביגיל) אשת נבל הכרמלי; והשלשי אבשלום בן מעכה בת תלמי מלך גשור׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק ג</footer></blockquote> <a href="/The+Mystery+of+Absalom%27s+Mother">We've talked</a> about the fact that David married מעכה בת תלמי מלך גשור, and how that might have been a political marriage, to cement an alliance, or an אשת יפת תואר captured in battle. The fact that Avshalom runs there for sanctuary is evidence of the latter, as is the fact that the only other time Geshur is mentioned, David is committing genocide: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ז</b> ויהי מספר הימים אשר ישב דוד בשדה פלשתים ימים וארבעה חדשים׃ <b>ח</b> ויעל דוד ואנשיו ויפשטו אל <em>הגשורי</em> והגרזי (והגזרי) והעמלקי; כי הנה ישבות הארץ אשר מעולם בואך שורה ועד ארץ מצרים׃ <b>ט</b> והכה דוד את הארץ ולא יחיה איש ואשה; ולקח צאן ובקר וחמרים וגמלים ובגדים וישב ויבא אל אכיש׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמואל א פרק כז</footer></blockquote> Now this Geshur is בואך שורה, in the wilderness between Israel and Egypt, but the land of Geshur most often mentioned in תנ״ך is in the north: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ד</b> וגבול עוג מלך הבשן מיתר הרפאים היושב בעשתרות ובאדרעי׃ <b>ה</b> ומשל בהר חרמון ובסלכה ובכל הבשן עד גבול הגשורי והמעכתי; וחצי הגלעד גבול סיחון מלך חשבון׃</p> <footer class=source>יהושוע פרק יב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויהושע זקן בא בימים; ויאמר ה׳ אליו אתה זקנתה באת בימים והארץ נשארה הרבה מאד לרשתה׃ <b>ב</b> זאת הארץ הנשארת; כל גלילות הפלשתים וכל הגשורי׃ ...<b>יא</b> והגלעד וגבול הגשורי והמעכתי וכל הר חרמון וכל הבשן עד סלכה׃ ...<b>יג</b> ולא הורישו בני ישראל את הגשורי ואת המעכתי; וישב גשור ומעכת בקרב ישראל עד היום הזה׃ </p> <footer class=source>יהושוע פרק יג</footer></blockquote> I would assume that it's the same nation, with two branches north and south. And David is not friendly with either of them. Avshalom initialy goes to his grandfather, but eventually spends three years in Geshur itself. The Malbim says that was because he was being extra careful: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ואבשלום ברח וכו׳ ואבשלום ברח</em>: פי׳ מהרי״א תחלה ברח אל תלמי זקנו, והיה הולך עמו בכל אשר התהלך תלמי, אבל על ידי שדוד התאבל על בנו כל הימים האלה שהם השלש שנים, ירא אבשלום פן ישלח אחריו וישיגהו בדרכו, ולכן ברח וילך גשור, נסגר בעיר חומה דלתים ובריח.</p> <footer class=source>מלבי״ם, שמואל ב יג:לז</footer></blockquote> But I would read it as the other way around. Initially he is hiding with the king, but moves out into the entire land. He is an important person, and he is plotting how to return to Israel to become king himself. I don't think he necessarily wants to *kill* his father at this point, but he is about 30, and his father is about 60 and obsessed with his בית המקדש. He would be happy to return, be named Crown Prince (Shlomo is only 5 years old; he can't be taken seriously) and assume the duties of monarchy while his father retires to his blueprints. And David is describes as ותכל דויד המלך לצאת אל אבשלום. What does that mean? כלה often means "decide": <blockquote lang=he><p>ויטל שאול את החנית עליו להכתו; וידע יהונתן כי <em>כלה</em> היא מעם אביו להמית את דוד׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל א כ:לב</footer></blockquote> And לצאת often means "to go out to war": <blockquote lang=he><p>ויקם דוד ואנשיו כשש מאות איש ויצאו מקעלה ויתהלכו באשר יתהלכו; ולשאול הגד כי נמלט דוד מקעילה ויחדל <em>לצאת</em>׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל א כג:יג</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>וכל ישראל ויהודה אהב את דוד; כי הוא <em>יוצא</em> ובא לפניהם׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל א יח:טז</footer></blockquote> So David decided to go to war against Avshalom? But the problem is that ותכל is feminine. So Rashi says we're missing a word: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ותכל דוד</em>: הרי זה מקרא קצר, ותכל נפש דוד; וכן תרגם יונתן: וחמידת נפשא דדוד, כמו (תהלים פד:ג): נִכְסְפָה וְגַם כָּלְתָה [נַפְשִׁי לְחַצְרוֹת ה׳], לשון תאוה.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שמואל ב יג:לט</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ותכל דוד</em>: תחסר מלת נפש, ולזה אמר בלשון נקבה, שעל הנפש ידבר, כאלו אמר ותכל נפש דוד.</p> <footer class=source>מצודת ציון, שמואל ב יג:לט</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ותכל דוד</em>: כלתה נפש דוד לצאת בעבור אבשלום, והוא ענין תאוה וחשק אל הדבר, כמו (תהלים קיט:פא): כָּלְתָה לִתְשׁוּעָתְךָ נַפְשִׁי.</p> <footer class=source>מצודת דוד, שמואל ב יג:לט</footer></blockquote> David longed to go back to Avshalom. He misses his son, and forgives him כי ניחם על אמנון כי מת. Malbam has a clever understanding: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ותכל דוד</em>: פי׳ האפודי, ששלש שנים הראשונים שהתאבל דוד על בנו רצה דוד תמיד לצאת אל אבשלום, רצה לומר לצאת למלחמה ולקחתו מגשור ולהנקם ממנו, ועתה <em>מעכה אשתו או תמר</em>, כלתה את דוד (מלשון כלא), ותכל פועל יוצא, (היא כלאה ומנעה את דוד) מלצאת אל אבשלום להשיבו ולהמיתו, יען ראתה כי נחם על אמנון, מצאה חיל למנוע את דוד מלרדפו עוד.</p> <footer class=source>מלבי״ם, שמואל ב יג:לט</footer></blockquote> I think (as I always do) that the ambiguity is intentional. David loves Avshalom *and* wants to kill him. it's a feeling that should be familiar to any parent. But he is held back (מלשון כלא) and so we ahve a three year standoff. <hr/> So Yoav, David's nephew and chief of staff, has a plan: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויידע יואב בן צרויה; כי לב המלך על אבשלום׃ <b>ב</b> וישלח יואב תקועה וייקח משם אישה חכמה; ויאמר אליה התאבלי נא ולבשי נא בגדי אבל ואל תסוכי שמן והיית כאישה זה ימים רבים מתאבלת על מת׃ <b>ג</b> ובאת אל המלך ודיברת אליו כדבר הזה; וישם יואב את הדברים בפיה׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק יד</footer></blockquote> What is Yoav thinking? <blockquote lang=he><p><em>וידע יואב בן צריה כי לב המלך על אבשלום</em>: בפשטות יש לבאר שידע שבלבו לא מחל דוד לאבשלום על המעשה ועדיין כועס עליו ולא מוכן להשלים עמו, ואע״פ שבפסוק הקודם נאמר ”ותכל דוד המלך לצאת אל אבשלום“, ופירשו רש״י והרד״ק עפ״י דברי התרגום שנפש דוד יצאה בתאוותה ובגעגועיה אל אבשלום, כי התנחם כבר ממיתת אמנון, צריך לומר שהיו כאן ”רגשות מעורבים“, שמצד היותו אבי אבשלום ריחם עליו ונפשו יצאה אליו, אמנם מצד היותו המלך, ידע שאסור לו לעוות המשפט ולמחול לרוצח אחיו, ולכן נאמר בדוקא ”כי לב <em>המלך</em> על אבשלום“...ופירוש זה מתקבל היטב בפרט לפי מה שהבאנו את דברי הכלי יקר, שמה שנאמר ”ותכל נפש דוד לצאת אל אבשלום“, היה כדי שלא ייטמע בין הגויים וילמד ממעשיהם, אבל את אבשלום עצמו שנא דוד על הרגו את אמנון בכורו.</p> <footer class=source>משבצות זהב, שמואל ב יד:א</footer></blockquote> Yoav has always been fiercely loyal to David but often acts against David's own interests (we have seen him kill Avner in פרק ג). Yoav will eventually side with Adoniyahu as successor to David as opposed to Shlomo, but again, that was not a rebellion *againt* David; that was Yoav's idea of fighting David for his own good. חז״ל saw something similar in Yoav's approach to Avshalom: <blockquote lang=he><p>והשמעה באה עד יואב כי יואב נטה אחרי אדניה ואחרי אבשלום לא נטה; וינס יואב אל אהל ה׳ ויחזק בקרנות המזבח׃</p> <footer class=source>מלכים א ב:כח</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>מאי ”לא נטה“? אמר רב יהודה: שביקש לנטות ולא נטה. ומאי טעמא לא נטה? אמר רבי אלעזר: עדיין ליחלוחית [רש״י: גבורתו] של דוד קיימת.</p> <footer class=source>סנהדרין מט,א</footer></blockquote> So Yoav invites this wise woman of Tekoa to talk to David, and we have what I think is the longest conversation in תנ״ך: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ד</b> ותאמר האישה התקועית אל המלך ותיפול על אפיה ארצה ותשתחו; ותאמר הושיעה המלך׃</p> <p><b>ה</b> ויאמר לה המלך מה לך; ותאמר אבל אישה אלמנה אני וימת אישי׃ <b>ו</b> ולשפחתך שני בנים ויינצו שניהם בשדה ואין מציל ביניהם; ויכו האחד את האחד וימת אותו׃ <b>ז</b> והנה קמה כל המשפחה על שפחתך ויאמרו תני את מכה אחיו ונמיתהו בנפש אחיו אשר הרג ונשמידה גם את היורש; וכיבו את גחלתי אשר נשארה לבלתי שים לאישי שם ושארית על פני האדמה׃ </p> <p><b>ח</b> ויאמר המלך אל האישה לכי לביתך; ואני אצווה עלייך׃ <b>ט</b> ותאמר האישה התקועית אל המלך עליי אדוני המלך העוון ועל בית אבי; והמלך וכיסאו נקי׃ </p> <p><b>י</b> ויאמר המלך; המדבר אלייך והבאתו אליי ולא יוסיף עוד לגעת בך׃ <b>יא</b> ותאמר יזכור נא המלך את ה׳ אלוקיך מהרבת גואל הדם לשחת ולא ישמידו את בני; ויאמר חי ה׳ אם ייפול משערת בנך ארצה׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק יד</footer></blockquote> She defends her son by saying that the rest of the family, the גואלי הדם, are only after the money: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ונשמידה גם היורש</em>: הלא זאת לא אמרה המשפחה כי רצו רק לבער הדם...כי באשר לא נשארו רק שני בנים יורשים נחלת אביהם ונהרג האחד, יקום האח הנשאר תחתיו לנחלה, ומטעם זה רוצים להרגו שאז יירשו הם את נחלתו בשהם אחי אבי המת.</p> <footer class=source>מלבי"ם, שמואל ב יד:ז</footer></blockquote> And David reassures her. Radak says he will protect her family: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>אצוה עליך</em>. אצוה בני המשפחה עליך שלא יגעו בבנך</p> <footer class=source>רד״ק, שמואל ב יד:ח</footer></blockquote> But it seems more likely that he is only promising to look into it: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>אצוה עליך</em>: אצוה את מי מאנשי, לדרוש ולחקור בדבר, אם האמת אתך.</p> <footer class=source>מצודת דוד, שמואל ב יד:ח</footer></blockquote> And then she continues to press her case, and begs David to take a formal oath to protect her son: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>עלי אדוני המלך העון וגו׳</em>: כאלו תאמר, יאמין לי שהאמת אתי, ומיד תזכהו, ואם יודע לאחר זה שלא כן הוא, אזי יהיה העון עלי על שהטעיתי את המלך.</p> <footer class=source>מצודת דוד, שמואל ב יד:ט</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>יזכר נא המלך</em>: רצתה לומר שיוציא שבועה מפיו שלא יומת בנה.</p> <footer class=source>רד״ק, שמואל ב יד:יא</footer></blockquote> And then, she reveals the truth: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יב</b> ותאמר האישה תדבר נא שפחתך אל אדוני המלך דבר; ויאמר דברי׃ </p> <p><b>יג</b> ותאמר האישה ולמה חשבת כזאת על עם אלוקים; ומידבר המלך הדבר הזה כאשם לבלתי השיב המלך את נידחו׃ <b>יד</b> כי מות נמות וכמים הניגרים ארצה אשר לא ייאספו; ולא יישא אלוקים נפש וחשב מחשבות לבלתי יידח ממנו נידח׃ <b>טו</b> ועתה אשר באתי לדבר אל המלך אדוני את הדבר הזה כי ייראוני העם; ותאמר שפחתך אדברה נא אל המלך אוליי יעשה המלך את דבר אמתו׃ <b>טז</b> כי ישמע המלך להציל את אמתו מכף האיש להשמיד אותי ואת בני יחד מנחלת אלוקים׃ <b>יז</b> ותאמר שפחתך יהיה נא דבר אדוני המלך למנוחה; כי כמלאך האלוקים כן אדוני המלך לשמוע הטוב והרע וה׳ אלוקיך יהי עימך׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק יד</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ולמה חשבת כזאת על עם אלקים</em>: אמרה לו איך עלה במחשבתך שהספור והנידון שהצעתי לפניך הוא אמתי, ושעם אלהים יעשו עול כזה מה שהוא נגד הטבע והיושר.</p> <p><em>ומדבר המלך הדבר הזה</em>: מלת מדבר הוא מבנין מתפעל כמו מתדבר כמו שפירש רש״י על (במדבר ז:פט) וַיִּשְׁמַע אֶת הַקּוֹל מִדַּבֵּר אֵלָיו; רצה לומר אבל הדבר הזה שהחליט המלך בזה הוא מתדבר אל עצמו, שבזה הוא</p> <p><em>כאשם לבלתי השיב המלך את נדחו</em>, כי המלך עם בנו הוא הנידון, ופסק דינו בעצמו שמה שאינו משיב את נדחו היא כאשמה מלפניו.</p> <footer class=source>מלבי״ם, שמואל ב יד:יב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ולא ישא אלקים נפש</em>: פי׳ אלקים לא יכפר עון נפש שהרג, ויקבל ענשו בדין שמים.</p> <footer class=source>מלבי״ם, שמואל ב יד:יג</footer></blockquote> And David pries the further truth out of her: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יח</b> ויען המלך ויאמר אל האישה אל נא תכחדי ממני דבר אשר אנוכי שואל אותך; ותאמר האישה ידבר נא אדוני המלך׃ <b>יט</b> ויאמר המלך היד יואב איתך בכל זאת; ותען האישה ותאמר חי נפשך אדוני המלך אם איש להימין ולהשמיל מכול אשר דיבר אדוני המלך כי עבדך יואב הוא ציווני והוא שם בפי שפחתך את כל הדברים האלה׃ <b>כ</b> לבעבור סבב את פני הדבר עשה עבדך יואב את הדבר הזה; ואדוני חכם כחכמת מלאך האלוקים לדעת את כל אשר בארץ׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק יד</footer></blockquote> Again, this is a very long conversation: 15 back-and-forths by my count. It must be important. Why? None of the classical מפורשים address this, so I'm going to speculate wildly. Part of this is her lecture about the nature of justice: לא יישא אלוקים נפש. Our job is to do our best, and that means following the laws, even if it means that our justice is not perfect. We can rely on ה׳ for the final justice. <blockquote lang=he><p>מדבר שקר תרחק; ונקי וצדיק אל תהרג כי לא אצדיק רשע׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות כג:ז</footer></blockquote> The other side is this emphasis on her origin. She is from Tekoa. So what? There are two Tekoas in Israel; one is in Gush Etzion (just south of Bethlehem) and the other is in the Galil, in the territory of Asher. חז״ל identified this תקוע with the northern one, which makes sense; I imagine that David would have heard of a scandal of one brother killing another in his own tribe. Why would the text emphasize that she is from Tekoa? חז״ל say that is why Yoav picked her: <blockquote lang=he><p>תקועה, אלפא לשמן.</p> <footer class=source>משנה מנחות ח:ג</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>”וישלח יואב תקועה ויקח משם אשה חכמה“. מאי שנא תקועה? אמר רבי יוחנן: מתוך שרגילין בשמן זית חכמה מצויה בהן. תנו רבנן (דברים לג:כד) וְטֹבֵל בַּשֶּׁמֶן רַגְלוֹ זה חלקו של אשר שמושך שמן כמעין.</p> <footer class=source>מנחות פה,ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>חכמה מצוייה בהם</em>: שמן זית מפקח את הלב.</p> <footer class=source>כתב יד רש״י, שם</footer></blockquote> How does olive oil make you wise? I would go with something more metaphoric: the "wisdom" of Tekoa is the ability to bring peace: <blockquote lang=en><p>The phrase "to pour oil on troubled waters" means "to try to settle a disagreement or dispute with words intended to placate or pacify those involved".</p> <p>It alludes to the calming effect of oil on the agitated surface of water, which the Roman statesman and scholar Pliny the Elder mentioned in his vast encyclopaedia of the natural and human worlds, <i lang=la>Naturalis Historia</i>...</p> <p>...: The earliest recorded observations of adding oil to water seem to date back to the 18th century BC in Babylon.</p> <footer class=source>Pascal Tréguer, <a href="https://wordhistories.net/2017/10/06/oil-on-troubled-waters/"><cite>The Ancient Origin of "To Pour Oil on Troubled Waters"</cite></a></footer></blockquote> And calling her a תקועית could be read as “one who is תוקע, who blows the <i lang=he>tekia</i>”: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> וידבר ה׳ אל משה לאמר׃ <b>ב</b> עשה לך שתי חצוצרת כסף מקשה תעשה אתם; והיו לך למקרא העדה ולמסע את המחנות׃ <b>ג</b> ותקעו בהן ונועדו אליך כל העדה אל פתח אהל מועד׃ ...<b>ז</b> ובהקהיל את הקהל תתקעו ולא תריעו׃ ...<b>ט</b> וכי תבאו מלחמה בארצכם על הצר הצרר אתכם והרעתם בחצצרת; ונזכרתם לפני ה׳ אלהיכם ונושעתם מאיביכם׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר פרק י</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ויתקע יואב בשופר ויעמדו כל העם ולא ירדפו עוד אחרי ישראל; ולא יספו עוד להלחם׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב ב:כח</footer></blockquote> The <i lang=he>teruah</i> is an alarm, a call to war. A <i lang=he>tekia</i> is the "all-clear", a call to bring people together. That is the role of this אישה חכמה. This lecture is an important stage in this part of ספר שמואל, which might be called <cite>The Education of King David</cite>. It's part of his transition from a focus on his own role, even it is all לשם שמים , but it led to the sin of בת שבע and אוריה. His תשובה is about coming to a point where it is not about him, but about כנסת ישראל as a whole. His job is נועדו אליך כל העדה. He needs to become a תקועית himself. We started the story of Amnon with יונדב, איש חכם מאד whose "wisdom" just made everything worse. We end it with אשה חכמה...האשה התקעית who tries to bring everything together. <hr/> There's another אישה חכמה in תנ״ך, a few chapters from now: <blockquote lang="he"><p><b>טו</b> וַיָּבֹאוּ וַיָּצֻרוּ עָלָיו בְּאָבֵלָה בֵּית הַמַּעֲכָה וַיִּשְׁפְּכוּ סֹלְלָה אֶל הָעִיר וַתַּעֲמֹד בַּחֵל; וְכָל הָעָם אֲשֶׁר אֶת יוֹאָב מַשְׁחִיתִם לְהַפִּיל הַחוֹמָה׃ <b>טז</b> וַתִּקְרָא אִשָּׁה חֲכָמָה מִן הָעִיר; שִׁמְעוּ שִׁמְעוּ אִמְרוּ נָא אֶל יוֹאָב קְרַב עַד הֵנָּה וַאֲדַבְּרָה אֵלֶיךָ׃ …<b>יט</b> אָנֹכִי שְׁלֻמֵי אֱמוּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל; אַתָּה מְבַקֵּשׁ לְהָמִית עִיר וְאֵם בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל לָמָּה תְבַלַּע נַחֲלַת ה׳׃</p> <footer class="source">שמואל ב פרק כ</footer></blockquote> This help define the role of the אישה חכמה. Both of them bring peace, and do it by appealing to the emotions rather than the intellect. It is part of the meaning of חכמה. <blockquote lang=he><p>כה אמר ה׳ צבא־ות התבוננו וקראו למקוננות ותבואינה; ואל החכמות שלחו ותבואנה׃</p> <footer class=source>ירמיהו ט:טז</footer></blockquote> As I understand it, חכמה is wholistic and intuitive, where בינה is analytic. חכמה is "right-brained" where בינה is "left-brained". In terms of the kabbalistic ספירות,‎ ה׳'s חכמה is part of the מדת הרחמים, the undifferentiated Divine Intellect. בינה is part of the מדת הדין, that makes the distinctions that we see in creation: <blockquote lang=he><p>חכמה:...החכמה נמשלה לזרע, יכולת ליצור משהו חדש אך הוא לא מסוגל להוציאו לבד אל הפועל.</p> <p>בינה: הבינה היא השלב השלישי ברצון האלוקי...משמעות הבינה היא לקחת את הרעיון הכללי ולפתח אותו לפרטים ולבדוק כיצד הוא ניתן למימוש במציאות...הבינה נמשלה לרחם המקבלת את הזרע, החכמה, ומעניקה לו את יכולת המימוש בעולם.</p> <footer class=source>ויקישיבה, <a href="https://www.yeshiva.org.il/wiki/index.php?title=%D7%A2%D7%A9%D7%A8_%D7%94%D7%A1%D7%A4%D7%99%D7%A8%D7%95%D7%AA">עשר הספירות</a></footer></blockquote> And this אישה חכמה teaches David חכמה, bringing peace and being part of the whole. He needs this to achieve true מלכות. <hr/> And we're going to get even more kabbalistic to connect this to ספר תהילים. We haven't spent much time talking about the various forms of תהילים: <blockquote lang=he><p>אמר ריב״ל בעשרה מאמרות של שבח נאמר ספר תהלים בניצוח בנגון במשכיל במזמור בשיר באשרי בתהלה בתפלה בהודאה בהללויה גדול מכולן.</p> <footer class=source>פסחים קיז,ב</footer></blockquote> But I want to start looking at that now, and especially how the the Zohar looks at them. The תיקוני זהר notes a parallel of ten forms of praise and the ten ספירות, the classification of ה׳'s מידות in this world. Each מאמר של שבח represents a way of appreciating a different aspect of how we experience the Divine. Again, I don't think David had such a rigid structure in mind, but I think the kabbalists looked at the vocabulary that David used, and the themes of each chapter, and applied it to their analytic structure. In the terms we used above, David's understanding of theology was חכמה, wholistic and intuitive. Lurianic Kabbalah is בינה, analytic and reductionist. And in that structure, the מאמר של שבח that corresponds to חכמה is שיר. As Rav Hutner points out that there are two broad categories of how we relate to the world outside ourselves: we are part of a larger whole, or we are unique and separate. In terms of our relationship with הקב״ה, these are called אהבת ה׳ and יראת שמים. In terms of our experience of ה׳'s relationship with us, these are called מדת הרחמים and מדת הדין, immanence and trancendance. In terms of our understanding of G-d's wisdom, these are חכמה and בינה. In the words of the Zohar, the תְּלָתִין דַּרְגִּין that go from בְּרַתָּא‎ (מלכות; see <a href="/פרשת+חיי+שרה+תשע״ז/">Ramban to בראשית כד:א</a>,‎ ואכמ״ל) to אַבָּא‎ (חכמה; see <a href="http://chabadpedia.co.il/index.php/%D7%90%D7%91%D7%90_%D7%A2%D7%99%D7%9C%D7%90%D7%94">Chabadpedia</a> and זהר ויקרא כו,א and <a href="https://he.wikisource.org/wiki/%D7%A4%D7%A8%D7%93%D7%A1_%D7%A8%D7%9E%D7%95%D7%A0%D7%99%D7%9D_%D7%9B%D7%92_%D7%97">Pardes Rimonim 23;8</a>). There are 14 תהילים that are "שיר המעלות", and one that is "שיר <strong>ל</strong>מעלות": as it were, the song [of חכמה], of the thirty steps. It is, in the reading of the <a href="https://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%A6%D7%91%D7%99_%D7%90%D7%9C%D7%99%D7%9E%D7%9C%D7%9A_%D7%A9%D7%A4%D7%99%D7%A8%D7%90">בני יששכר</a>, the song of wisdom of what it means to be a king. It is paean to humility. <blockquote lang=he><p> שיר למעלות;<br/> אשא עיניי אל ההרים מאין יבוא עזרי׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים קכא:א</footer></blockquote> There are several ways of reading "מאין יבוא עזרי". Artscroll reads it as a question: "from where will my help come?" Hirsch reads the entire line as a question: "Shall I lift my eyes to hills to see from where my help will come?", but in his commentary allows that אין my mean "not", effectively "I lift my eyes to the hills, from where my help does *not* come". He cites יחזקאל: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ה</b> ואיש כי יהיה צדיק; ועשה משפט וצדקה׃ <b>ו</b> אל ההרים לא אכל ועיניו לא נשא אל גלולי בית ישראל; ואת אשת רעהו לא טמא ואל אשה נדה לא יקרב׃</p> <footer class=source>יחזקאל פרק יח</footer></blockquote> But the בני יששכר reads it as "my help comes from אין, from *nothing*": <blockquote lang=he><p> <em>שיר למעלות אשא עיני אל ההרים מאין יבא עזרי</em>: יש לפרש כשאשא עיני אל ההרים והנה תראה תבור וכרמל הרים גבנונים על שהיה בהם גבהות משא״כ סיני ההר חמד אלקים על שהיה נמוך וכאילו בטל לגבי הרים הגבוהים. וז״ש אשא עיני אל ההרים (ואתבונן ע׳׳י ההרים כי) מאין יבא מזרי (כשאני ”אין“ ואפס אז יבא עזרי).ע״כ אמר בכאן שיר <em>ל</em>מעלות שהוא המלכות הניקנית בלמ״ד מעלות. והנה המלך מתנשא על העם, ודוד היה...מתעדן עצמו כתולעת ואמר אשא עיני וכו׳ וכנ״ל ואראה כי מבחינת ”אין“ יבא עזרי.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://beta.hebrewbooks.org/4680">אגרא דפרקא רכז</a></footer></blockquote> The conclusion remains the same: our salvation comes not from our own power, but from ה׳: <blockquote lang=he><p> עזרי מעם ה׳ עשה שמים וארץ׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק קכא:ב</footer></blockquote> Hirsch empasizes that עֹשֵׂה is in the present tense: <blockquote lang=en><p>It is the Lord, Who did not simply create heaven and earth at one time, but Who still shapes them even today.</p> <footer class=source>Hirsch Psalms CXXI:2</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ג</b> אל יתן למוט רגלך; אל ינום שמרך׃<br/> <b>ד</b> הנה לא ינום ולא יישן שומר ישראל׃<br/> <b>ה</b> ה׳ שמרך; ה׳ צלך על יד ימינך׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק קכא</footer></blockquote> The reason we need to rely on ה׳ is that any mortal ally is fallible. We need a שומר who will never sleep. <blockquote lang=he><p><em>הנה לא ינום</em>: שלא ינום מחמת לאות וחולשה, ויותר מזה כי <em>לא יישן</em> כלל כי לא נמצא אצלו טבע השינה כלל, שבן אדם אף מי שלא ינום מחמת עיפות הלא מוכרח הוא לישן ולהעמיד אז שומר אחר תחתיו.</p> <footer class=source>מלבי״ם, תהילים קכא:ד</footer></blockquote> Hirsch has a unique perspective on ה׳ צלך. We don't just need protection from the bad that may befall us; we need to protected from our good fortune as well. That is the symbolism of the sun and moon here. <blockquote lang=en><p>[I]f, when the sun of prosperity stands at your right hand, He is also your shade so that the glitter of good fortune will not dazzle you and make you arrogant, then the sun of the day of joy will not harm you. And during the nights of misfortune, your awareness of the Lord and your trust in Him will gently dispel the gloom of sorrow for you, even as the moon brightens the darkness of night.</p> <footer class=source>Hirsch Psalms CXXI:5-6</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ו</b> יומם השמש לא יככה; וירח בלילה׃<br/> <b>ז</b> ה׳ ישמרך מכל רע; ישמר את נפשך׃<br/> <b>ח</b> ה׳ ישמר צאתך ובואך מעתה ועד עולם׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק קכא</footer></blockquote> And as we said above, צאתך ובואך has a special meaning for the king: <blockquote lang=he><p>וכל ישראל ויהודה אהב את דוד; כי הוא יוצא ובא לפניהם׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל א יח:טז</footer></blockquote> This perek, I would argue, is the underlying message of the wise woman of Tekoa. Even as king, David does not have absolute power. (שמואל ב יד:יד)‎ כי מות נמות וכמים הניגרים ארצה אשר לא ייאספו; ולא יישא אלוקים נפש וחשב מחשבות. It is this humility that will allow David to survive the coming storm in his kingdom.
