After David gives his kingdom and his plans for the בית המקדש to Shlomo, he passes on. Why would he be so intrigued by the rustling trees that he would take the chance to go look? Rabbi Shlomo Ezagui ([_King David and the Angel of Death_](https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/king-david-and-the-angel-of-death/)) makes an interesting connection. There is one episode in ספר שמואל where David hears rustling tree tops: at the very beginning of his reign, in his war of independence against the Philistines: {:he} ><b>כב</b> ויספו עוד פלשתים לעלות; וינטשו בעמק רפאים׃ <b>כג</b> וישאל דוד בה׳ ויאמר לא תעלה; הסב אל אחריהם ובאת להם ממול בכאים׃ <b>כד</b> ויהי כשמעך את קול צעדה בראשי הבכאים אז תחרץ; כי אז יצא ה׳ לפניך להכות במחנה פלשתים׃ <b>כה</b> ויעש דוד כן כאשר צוהו ה׳; ויך את פלשתים מגבע עד באך גזר׃ --שמואל ב פרק ה The aggadah looks at the dialectic in David's life, between David the warrior and David the scholar. When he loses focus on what is truly important and goes back for a moment to his "glory days" as the David of (שמואל א יח:ז)‎ הִכָּה שָׁאוּל בַּאֲלָפָו, וְדָוִד בְּרִבְבֹתָיו, at that moment his life is over. So the Bavli says that David died on Shabbat. The Yerushalmi has a different opinion: {:he} >אמר רבי יוסי בירבי בון: דוד מת בעצרת. --ירושלמי ביצה ב:ד The context of that is proving that חג שבועות has תשלומין, that one can offer the קרבנות of יום טוב during the week after, if they weren't brought on יום טוב itself. The text, describing the coronation of Shlomo, says, (דברי הימים א כט:כא): וַיִּזְבְּחוּ לַה׳  זְבָחִים וַיַּעֲלוּ עֹלוֹת לַה׳ לְמׇחֳרַת הַיּוֹם הַהוּא. Why למחרת?‎ אמר רבי יוסי בירבי בון: דוד מת בעצרת, והיו כל ישראל אוננין והקריבו למחר. The Yerushalmi doesn't prove that David died on שבועות;‎ רבי יוסי בירבי בון simply cites a tradition. But that doesn't inherently contradict the Bavli: {:he} >ומת בעצרת שחל להיות בשבת. --רות רבה ג:ב Which can never happen in our current calendar, but is possible if ראש חודש is determined by בית דין. Nonetheless, Tosfot points out that the Yerushalmi *cannot* hold that David died on Shabbat: {:he} ><em>אף עצרת יש לו תשלומין</em>: בירושלמי: אמר רבי יוסי בר בון דוד מת בעצרת והיו כל ישראל אוננין והקריבו למחר...וקשה לה"ר אלחנן: תיפוק ליה בלאו הכי לא הקריבו בראשון, כיון שהיה שבת כדמשמע...דבשבת נפטר דוד. ושמא התם לית ליה הכי אלא פליג אהא. --תוספות, חגיגה יז,א So we have an aggadic מחלוקת between the Bavli and the Yerushalmi. We need to take aggadot seriously, but what does this mean? I think the question is how do we remember King David: do we associate him with Shavuot or with Shabbat? What would that mean? Shavuot in the Torah is not זמן מתן תורתינו but חג הקציר: {:he} >וחג שבעת תעשה לך בכורי קציר חטים; וחג האסיף תקופת השנה׃ --שמות לד:לב <blockquote lang=he><p><b>טז</b> עד ממחרת השבת השביעת תספרו חמשים יום; והקרבתם מנחה חדשה לה׳׃ ... <b>כא</b> וקראתם בעצם היום הזה מקרא קדש יהיה לכם כל מלאכת עבדה לא תעשו; חקת עולם בכל מושבתיכם לדרתיכם׃ <b>כב</b> ובקצרכם את קציר ארצכם לא תכלה פאת שדך בקצרך ולקט קצירך לא תלקט; לעני ולגר תעזב אתם אני ה׳ אלקיכם׃</p> <footer class=source>ויקרא פרק כג</footer></blockquote> The Chasam Sofer explains why Shavuot does not have a חול המועד: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ובקוצרכם</em>: מכאן למדו חז״ל (חגיגה יז,א) תשלומין לשבועות: איזהו חג שאתה קורא וקוצר? הוי אומר זהו תשלומין של שבועות...נראה לי ליען ליום הקדוש יום הביכורים, יום מתן תורה, גרוע מכל יו״ט לימי תשלומין שלו; הם חול גמור ואינם חול המועד כמו פסח וסוכות. ולמה יגרע? ע״כ אמר לא מיגרע גרע שהרי בקוצרכם תניחו לקט ופיאה, והרי הוא קדוש כמועדים וכימי קרבן, וראוי ימים הללו להיות ימי תשלומין ליום הקדוש הלזה.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=21620&st=&pgnum=116">חתם סופר, תורת משה, פרשת אמור</a></footer></blockquote> Every יום טוב has a mitzvah for חול המועד:‎ חמץ or סוכה. The mitzvah for “חול המועד” of שבועות is לקט ופיאה, the gifts to the poor. And so there is no איסור מלאכה as there would be on a real חול המועד. Shavuot is a יום טוב of בין אדם לחבירו. Shabbat is different. Shabbat is בין אדם למקום. {:he} ><b>טז</b> ושמרו בני ישראל את השבת לעשות את השבת לדרתם ברית עולם׃ <b>יז</b> *ביני ובין בני ישראל אות הוא לעלם*; כי ששת ימים עשה ה׳ את השמים ואת הארץ וביום השביעי שבת וינפש׃ --שמות פרק לא And it is interesting that both are mentioned as the day that the Torah was given: {:he} >תנו רבנן: בששי בחדש ניתנו עשרת הדברות לישראל. רבי יוסי אומר: בשבעה בו...ודכולי עלמא, בשבת ניתנה תורה לישראל. --שבת פו,ב But they are different. On שבת we celebrate our relationship with הקב״ה through the Torah. The celebration of מתן תורה of Shavuot is specifically with others: {:he} >אמר רבי אלעזר: הכל מודים בעצרת דבעינן נמי לכם [רש״י: שישמח בו במאכל ומשתה]. מאי טעמא? יום שניתנה בו תורה הוא. --פסחים סח,ב {:he} >וכשהוא אוכל ושותה חייב להאכיל לגר ליתום ולאלמנה עם שאר העניים האמיללים. אבל מי שנועל דלתות חצרו ואוכל ושותה הוא ובניו ואשתו ואינו מאכיל ומשקה לעניים ולמרי נפש אין זו שמחת מצוה אלא שמחת כרסו. --משנה תורה, הלכות שביתת יום טוב ו:יח So the two talmuds present us with a choice of eulogies. Looking back on the life of David, do we see him (and his relationship with Torah) as שבת or שבועות: do we remember his relationship with הקב״ה or with כנסת ישראל? The answer, of course, is: yes. ---- We can't talk about facing death, the concept that the universe will continue to exist without us, without talking about Heidegger. An important part of his philosophy was the idea of {:de}/Sein-zum-Tode/, "Being-toward-Death", that we spend out lives getting closer to not being alive, and we need {:de}/vorlaufende Entschlossenheit/ translated as (George Pattison, [_Heidegger on Death: A Critical Theological Essay_](https://www.routledge.com/Heidegger-on-Death-A-Critical-Theological-Essay/Pattison/p/book/9781409466956)) a "resolute[ly] running ahead toward death", being aware of it and facing that fact squarely on. In fact, we can only look at what a life means when we can look back on it after it ends and we can look at it as a whole. Heidegger has his own answer, but the question isn't new. ספר קהלת is all about dealing with this, and how to avoid nihilism (nothing matters) in the face of death. ספר תהילים sometimes deals with this: {:he} >אנוש כחציר ימיו; כציץ השדה כן יציץ׃ --תהילים קג:טו And the answer is that ה׳ is eternal , and our connection to ה׳ gives our finite lives meaning: {:he} >וחסד ה׳ מעולם ועד עולם על יראיו; וצדקתו לבני בנים׃ --תהילים קג:יז Let's look at that perek. It starts with a call to the נפש: {:he} >לדוד; ברכי נפשי את ה׳; וכל קרבי את שם קדשו׃ --תהילים קג:א There are two perakim that start with ברכי נפשי את ה׳, “O my soul, praise G-d”. The one we are more familiar with is תהילים פרק קד, which we recite on Rosh Chodesh: {:he} >ברכי נפשי את ה׳; ה׳ אלקי גדלת מאד; הוד והדר לבשת׃ --תהילים קד:א That perek is a celebration of creation, and of Man's role in the world as a creator as well: {:he .lines} ><b>כג</b> יצא אדם לפעלו; ולעבדתו עדי ערב׃ <b>כד</b> מה רבו מעשיך ה׳ כלם בחכמה עשית; מלאה הארץ קנינך׃ --תהילים פרק קד We looked at that perek in <//High Technology>. Our perek, תהילים קג, is about the relationship of G-d to human beings. {:he .lines} ><b>ו</b> עשה צדקות ה׳; ומשפטים לכל עשוקים׃ <b>ז</b> יודיע דרכיו למשה; לבני ישראל עלילותיו׃ <b>ח</b> רחום וחנון ה׳; ארך אפים ורב חסד׃ --תהילים פרק קג In a sense, these two perakim reflect the two descriptions of creation in ספר בראשית. Rav Soloveitchik, in [_The Lonely Man of Faith_](https://www.amazon.com/Lonely-Man-Faith-Joseph-Soloveitchik/dp/0385514085), calls the two "Adam the first" and "Adam the second". "Adam the first" is the אדם of פרק א: {:he} ><b>כז</b> ויברא אלקים את האדם בצלמו בצלם אלקים ברא אתו; זכר ונקבה ברא אתם׃ <b>כח</b> ויברך אתם אלקים ויאמר להם אלקים פרו ורבו ומלאו את הארץ וכבשה; ורדו בדגת הים ובעוף השמים ובכל חיה הרמשת על הארץ׃ --בראשית פרק א His role is to conquer. He is what Rav Soloveitchik calls "majestic man". "Adam the second" is the אדם of פרק ב: {:he} ><b>ז</b> וייצר ה׳ אלקים את האדם עפר מן האדמה ויפח באפיו נשמת חיים; ויהי האדם לנפש חיה׃...<b>טו</b> ויקח ה׳ אלקים את האדם; וינחהו בגן עדן לעבדה ולשמרה׃ --בראשית פרק ב His role is to serve, and to do that with others. Rav Soloveitchik calls him "covenantal man". Part of the difference is how the two view community. > Adam the first is challenged by a hostile environment and hence summoned to perform many tasks which he alone cannot master. Consequently, he is impelled to take joint action... > If pressed for an interpretation of the pronouncement [(בראשית ב:יח) לא טוב היות האדם לבדו], he would paraphrase it, "It is not good for man to work...alone"... --Rabbi Joseph B. And if that נפש ends, it's just part of the natural world. Death for Adam the second is different. >The existential insecurity of Adam the second stems, to a great extent, also from his role as a temporal being...He knows of an endless past which rolled on without him. He is aware also of an endless future which will rush on with no less force long after he will cease to exist...He begins to exist at a certain point--the significance of which he cannot grasp--and his existence will end at another equally arbitrary point... > Majestic man is not confronted with this time dilemma. The time with which he works and which he knows is quantified, spatialized, and measured...Past and future are not two experiential realities. They just represent two horizontal directions... > In the covenantal community man of faith finds deliverance from his isolation in the "now", for the latter contains both the "before" and the "after". An individual seeks the meaning of life by scaling the heights of a remote mountain or withdrawing to the vastness of an isolated desert. The psalmist, however, shares a surprising insight: a more authentic journey may very well start closer to home. One may search for God, not by turning outwards to the distant and faraway, but rather inwards to the immediate and near. “All that is within me will bless G-d’s Name”. > Rav Kook wrote: >> “Within our soul, all worlds are revealed. The perek then describes ה׳'s חסד. {:he} ><b>ו</b> עשה צדקות ה׳; ומשפטים לכל עשוקים׃<br/> <b>ז</b> יודיע דרכיו למשה; לבני ישראל עלילותיו׃<br/> <b>ח</b> רחום וחנון ה׳; ארך אפים ורב חסד׃<br/> <b>ט</b> לא לנצח יריב; ולא לעולם יטור׃<br/> <b>י</b> לא כחטאינו עשה לנו; ולא כעונתינו גמל עלינו׃ --תהילים פרק קג The story of Adam the second is the story of sin and punishment, the חטא עץ הדעת. How can an imperfect human being exist in the face of infinite divine perfection? The answer is, in this perek, ה׳'s forgiveness. רחום וחנון ה׳; ארך אפים ורב חסד.
